Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator rhythm CV clocked to Elektron Analog Four w/ Boomstar 4075

"Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator rhythm CV clocked to Elektron Analog Four and Boomstar 4075.

Stick around for 1:06 when the Boomstar kicks in.

Still enjoying the pocket operators, so much so I ordered the overpriced cases. It's a bit hilarious getting things re-synced after stopping the show. Part of the fun, I guess."

Some bits via the seller: "I think this synth was purchased in 1985 and put into a safety deposit box and left there. It's as close to mint as imaginable. All I can find on it is two fine scuffs/scratches on the back side about as long as the top edge of your pinky finger nail. Home use only in a non-smoking home. It's exceptionally clean, inside and out. Even the bottom side is perfect. When I opened it up to restore the aftertouch, internally it looked as though it never had been played. This was my 3rd personal JX-8P. Normally there is wear and tear on the felt strip the keys hit and the rubber bushings, but they all looked factory new. Everything is 100% functional, all keys, buttons, faders, switches, midi etc. The display is clear and bright. The photos should speak well of the condition. I doubt if I'll ever see another one this perfect...

This JX-8P's aftertouch was repaired this last weekend and is now perfect, strong and responsive...

Also included is a genuine Roland memory cartridge for storing an additional 32 patches in addition to the 96 internal ones. The cartridge is like-new also. On it are some instrument patches, sound effects and room to store your own additional patches."

PERCUSSA Announces New Mode in MIDIBridge: IMPROVISOR

An update via Percussa: "After releasing the MIDIBridge 3 update a while ago, along with the firmware update that introduced topology mode (see blog posts … ) I’ve been working on a new version of IMPROVISOR, the generative composition software for the AudioCubes. If you don’t know what this software does, check out the video below:

What is IMPROVISOR?

In short, using IMPROVISOR you can play live generative music by programming patterns into the software and then linking those to AudioCubes, and by then placing AudioCubes next to each other.

Depending on the orientation and location of AudioCubes, the resulting sequences will be different since each cube plays back a different pattern, and when cubes are placed next to each other patterns add up and subtract :-)

It’s great fun to play with and much easier to use than all the other generative / algorithmic composition software out there which has a lot of focus on academic concepts and is not very interactive, IMHO.

From Max/MSP patch to C++ application

IMPROVISOR started as a Max/MSP patch, and after the feedback from AudioCube users I’ve decided to turn it into a C++ application, and make it part of MIDIBridge, the main software application you are already familiar with when using AudioCubes.

This way the speed and performance of IMPROVISOR will be drastically improved, and it will instantly work with up to 16 cubes, and you’ll be able to take advantage of the features already built into MIDIBridge, such as MIDI clock syncing.

IMPROVISOR MODE
IMPROVISOR will show up in MIDIBridge as a new mode (see the lower left corner in the screenshot below). When two cubes are in this mode, they will work together. The cube that is following will add the pattern played back by the leading cube to its own pattern and a root note, and will send the resulting notes out through its MIDI port (selected on the right hand side in MIDIBridge).
This way, you can have up to 16 patterns playing simultaneously and in sync, each pattern potentially influencing the other patterns. By setting different pattern lengths for different cubes you’ll be able to create really interesting results, as you can see in the video below:

Of course you’ll be able to reuse patterns between cubes and you’ll be able to load and save them along with the other settings in MIDIBridge. IMPROVISOR will also have some global controls allowing you to set the tempo, as well as tap it, and start/stop/reset the sequencer as you wish.

Finally, you will notice there is an AUDIO button at the top in MIDIBridge now. I’ve added audio out, and this button calls up a dialog box letting you set the audio driver type (ASIO, DirectSound, CoreAudio, etc), buffer size, sample rate, resolution, etc. I’m planning to build SYNTHOR, the upcoming modular synth, into MIDIBridge as well, and this is where you will configure your sound interface to use the sound generation capabilities of new modes such as SYNTHOR. Check out a SYNTHOR video below:

When will it be available for download?

This new update of MIDIBridge 3 with IMPROVISOR mode is not available for download yet, but I’m working on it as we speak and will make it available for download over the next weeks. Look for a seperate announcement on one of the next newsletters :-)

That’s it for now :-) I hope you are excited about all this like me, and I can’t wait to finish IMPROVISOR mode and push out the next MIDIBridge update!"

The Audiothingies Midibro - Compact DIY MIDI Event Processor

via Audiothingies
via @FlavioB

"Built upon the acclaimed and now discontinued MIDIpal by Mutable Instruments, the Midibro is a smart and small MIDI processor available as a DIY kit.
Insert it between a MIDI keyboard (or sequencer) and a MIDI sound module to unleash powerful compositional tools and effects.

The most versatile MIDI event processor

Compositional tools

Arpeggiator: Arpeggiate your chords. 4 modes (up, down, up&down, random), 15 rhythmic patterns, adjustable tempo, rhythmical division, gate and groove, syncable to MIDI clock.
Step sequencer: Record step-by-step a sequence of up to 128 notes (with ties, rests, slides and accents), and play it back with transposition. As simple and elegant as the classic SH-101 sequencer!
Randomizer: Randomize note values, velocity, and send random CC at each key press.
Keyboard-controlled drums sequencer. Control a drum module from a keyboard by triggering and combining patterns — one for each key of a 49 keys keyboard. Create mesmerizing Euclidean drum patterns.
Chord memory: Enjoy the classic *chord memory* feature of early 80s synths.
Delay. Up to 32 echo notes added after each note, transposition and velocity adjustment for creating feedback arpeggio effects, syncable to MIDI clock.
Scale processor. Never miss a note in a solo… The scale mapper replaces each note you play by its nearest neighbour in one of the 25 preset scales. It can also transpose and add voicing/random harmonies.
MIDI message generation

Clock: Make your MIDI setup groove! MIDI clock source with adjustable tempo and adjustable groove/shuffle/humanization patterns, from super-tight to funky.
CC-LFO: Generate up to 4 tempo-synced LFOs and cyclic automation movements for any MIDI Control Change (CC) message.
CC knob: Use the Midibro as a knob to send any CC or NRPN message.

MOTU Releases The Bob Moog Foundation Encore Soundbank

via The Bob Moog Foundation:

"Cambridge, MA - May 19, 2015...

MOTU and the Bob Moog Foundation announce the release of the Bob Moog Foundation Encore Soundbank, a new and exciting collection of instrument and percussion sounds produced in commemoration of Bob Moog's 81st Birthday, coming up on May 23rd. In a charitable effort to raise funds for the foundation, over twenty legendary synthesists and renowned sound designers donated original samples to assist with the creation of the sound library, which offers over 2 GB of material. Now available for purchase from the MOTU website (www.motu.com/moog-encore), the library is fully compatible with any host software on Mac or Windows that supports virtual instruments, including popular DAW software such as Ableton Live, Avid Pro Tools, Cockos Reaper, and MOTU Digital Performer. All proceeds from the sale of the Encore Soundbank will benefit the Bob Moog Foundation.

The library ships in the form of a UVI soundbank that can be loaded into the cross-platform, universally compatible UVI Workstation virtual instrument player, available for free download from uvi.net. The library can also be loaded into MOTU's MachFive 3 sampler for side-by-side integration with other MachFive-compatible soundbanks. Most of the 200+ Encore Soundbank presets are scripted to include vintage Moog-style filter and envelope controls.

MOTU is proud to support the legacy of synthesizer pioneer Bob Moog and the Bob Moog Foundation's educational and historic preservation work through the funding generated by the sales of the Encore Soundbank. The following artists generously contributed to this project: Vince Clark, Al Kooper, Jordan Rudess, Suzanne Ciani, Larry Fast, Tangerine Dream (Edgar Froese / Thorsten Quaeschning), Goldfrapp (Will Gregory), Kevin Antunes, Adam Holzman, Erik Norlander, Peter Gorges, Amin Bhatia, CJ Vanston, Drew Neumann, Kevin Lamb, Dave Spiers, Jack Hotop, Jerry Kovarsky, Kent Spong, Klaus Peter Rausch, Taiho Yamada, Michael Koehler, Chris Cox, 'Magic' Dave Roberts, Marty Cutler, Marc Doty and I Monster (Dean Honer / Jerrod Gosling).

The soundbank is released in special remembrance of Edgar Froese, who enthusiastically donated sounds for the project, but passed away suddenly on January 20, 2015. His contribution to the Encore Soundbank was one of his last musical endeavors. We are deeply grateful for his generous contribution to this project. He is greatly missed.

Sounds included in the library were created using classic instruments including various Moog modulars and Minimoogs, Buchla modular, EMS Synthi A and VCS3, Yamaha CS-80, Alesis Andromeda, Sequential Circuits Prophets, Hammond B3 organ, classic Korg synths, rare Russian Polivoks, multiple theremins and effects pedals, a rare and exotic Ondioline, and an extremely rare Moog Apollo, plus much more.*

'Bob Moog's legacy touches each and every one of us every day,' said Jim Cooper, Director of Marketing at MOTU. 'Here at MOTU, we were inspired by the milestone of his 81st birthday, to pay tribute to his lasting effect on music. What better way than with kids, and supporting the work of the Bob Moog Foundation to educate and inspire them through his life's work.'

Michelle Moog-Koussa, Executive Director of the Bob Moog Foundation, notes, 'The Foundation is tremendously grateful to MOTU and the contributing artists who have made the Encore Soundbank an extraordinary resource for musicians across genres. The funding generated from this product will allow us to expand our educational project, Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, and to inspire even more children through the intersection of science, music, and technology.'

The Bob Moog Foundation Encore Soundbank is now available for purchase from the MOTU web site for $99 (www.motu.com/moog-encore). All proceeds will be donated to the Bob Moog Foundation.

MOTU and the Bob Moog Foundation would like to extend special thanks and recognition to Erik Norlander, Arnaud Sicard, and the team at uvi.net for their invaluable assistance in producing this project, as well as to producer Nate Donmoyer who created the audio samples for the product."

Introducing telePort 0.9.2

Published on May 19, 2015 juvul

"telePort is a live performance oriented music program available as a free prototype at http://www.juvul.com

telePort Control is available as an Universal App on the App Store:
https://itunes.apple.com/app/id851922...

telePort lets you integrate hardware and software instruments, as one advanced combined, programmable and morphable instrument.
It brings a modular approach to (augmented) sequencing and mixing, while at the same time making it easy to switch between completely different songs/tracks, or change the modules independently as the music is playing.
The goal is to create a very flexible music system, where you can have a whole set, not just a song, at your fingertips and improvise or play structured parts based on rules you define freely.

All of this is basically possible in the prototype (version 0.9.2), but the ultimate goal is to bring telePort and MIDIum together using the same framework.
To create a unified audio-visual environment with an easy-to-use interface, yet still allow power-users close to infinite depth through advanced scripting.

"Hive was made to be fast and simple. The streamlined single screen UI lets you dive into sound creation immediately. A fluid workflow invites you to tweak away until your sound is just right (or wrong in just the right way). Hive was engineered to be light on CPU, and won’t slow you down while you work. But being “fast and simple” doesn’t mean we’ve sacrificed sound quality or creative control - Hive is packed with features, controls and enough flexibility to deliver stunning sounds.

Whatever your style - from dance to ambient, progressive rock to R&B - Hive is the right tool for the job: a lightweight synth that delivers a heavyweight sound!

Features preview:

ADDAC803 VC Quadraphonic Spatializer

ADDAC803 VC Quadraphonic Spatializer Part 2

"This is our Quadraphonic output module.

Using the VBAP (Vector-Based Amplitude Panning) principle it allows to position a mono signal over a quadraphonic speaker array for sound spatialization. The VBAP algorithm can be controlled by Cartesian or Polar methods.

Sound path is fully analogue featuring 4 high quality VCA's.
Featuring both 1/4 inch and 3.5mm jacks for adapter free connections.

Four 16 bit CV outputs mirror the signal sent to the VCA's control, when connected to 4 external VCA's these can be used for Polar Mixing of 4 diferent sound sources.

The 2 Filter CV outputs react according to the distance from the center point. The + output increases as the sound gets further away from the center of the room allowing to sync a Low Pass Filter to the input sound so that as it moves away from the center the High Frequencies get attenuated further increasing the spatialization experience. Another good practice would be to sync a reverb dry/wet signal as well so that the sounds gets more difused as it moves away from the center into the horizon.
Both the filter and the reverb should be plugged between the sound source and the 803, in order for the incoming sound to be processed before being routed to the 4 outputs.

The X and Y CV outputs mirror the cartesian sound position between 0 and +5v."

Hack a Brute - Converting a MiniBrute to a MinBrute SE with Sequencer & More Mods

The original MiniBrute comes with an Arpeggiator section on the bottom right, while the SE comes with a Sequencer. The creator of the MiniBrute Yves Usson has a "Hack a Brute" section on his website with a number of Mods for the Minibrute. Some are more complicated than others.  The Hack to switch the OS on the MiniBrute to the SE however only requires a simple OS update via sysex and a new graphic for the Sequencer section.  You can easily swap the OS back as well.

"This is possibly the greatest synthesizer ever made (no hyperbole)! You can create the most huge and complex sounds on this synth imaginable, and the level of control with all the knobs is more than you could ever make use of. It's a shame that Nord stopped making this series in favor of their organ and electric piano PCM players... and the fact that this synthesizer has not gone down in value one penny since it's release over a decade ago says it all! You will not find a better specimen of this legendary synth. It is expanded so no matter how DSP hungry the patch you create or download to play is, you will always have access to AT LEAST 8 voices, and for the less DSP starving patches, you are likely to have 16-24 voices! The sound is incredible (listen to Autechre's Oversteps album and Move of Ten EP, which were made entirely with this synth alone!)!. It has served me well, and taught me more than I ever thought I might learn about synthesis. And if you feel intimidated, you needn't. It is great for beginners also, with the vibrant online communities that support this synth, you could download other peoples patches, and never run out of beautiful and wild sounds to use without ever touching the editor yourself! However, I do think this synthesizer will give the most to those who put the most into it, and there is not better synth ever made for teaching you everything you want to know about synthesis, and there are also great online guides specifically for this synth you can follow that will allow you to grow as an electronic musician."
