"This is my first jam with Mark Owens' amazing /innovative Goom synthesizer (quinapalus.com) ported by Thorsten Klose (midibox.org) to an stm32f4 discovery board. This thing is super simple, super inspiring and super fun to play. As the ST board has a built in DAC and usb ports there is no soldering required...simply download drivers from ST, install the MIDIbox mios32 bootloader, then upload the project.hex (found in the midibox thread) to the board...done! Use synthy's ctrlr panel (ctrlr.org) to use this synth as a VST or standalone on a PC or mac; the best way to store patches so far. Beats the pants off of any atmega / arduino synth..."

via the seller: "I bought this at a studio sale in NYC in the late 90's and used it exclusively in my home studio until the mid-2000s both studios were non-smoking and clean. I recently had it completely tuned, cleaned, electronics checked, calibrated, bushings replaced, etc. There are some minor cosmetic issues which I tried to capture in the photos. Notably a split/crack in the wood case on the right side of the keyboard, some discoloration/staining on the keys on that side of the keyboard as well and 2 non-original knobs for 1 oscillator ('modulation mix' and 'glide'). Also, at some point someone tried to do some sort of mod, you'll notice the switch on upper left corner of the control panel, I have no idea what this was and had the non-original internals removed (the switch on the front panel is still there but could easily be removed as well). The action on the keyboard is great and all knobs and switches function perfectly with no scratching or noise. The Serial Number is 6253 which I believe makes this instrument from the mid-70s. There is also a small piece of yellow construction paper scotch taped underneath the circuit box which says "Nov. 1974" in old typewriter font."

Curious how the AT is on it now. The AT on old Roland's sometimes required so much force you felt like you were going to snap the keys off.

Roland System 1M Ver. 1.20 Update Additional Waveforms

Published on May 22, 2015 zibbybone

"One of the things that sold me on buying the Sys1M was the 1.20 update for the Sys1 keyboard synth with its additional waveforms. I was a bit disappointed when I received the Sys1M and learned the 1.20 update for the Sys1 keyboard was not compatible with the module. Fortunately, Roland released the update only 2 weeks after the module became available. Version 1.20 also expands the patch memory from 8 patches to 64 (8 banks of 8 patch slots). So here are more goodies you get to enjoy with the System 1M!"

A.S. rs150 Sequential Switch waveform selector

Published on May 22, 2015 bigcitymusic

"The rs150 Sequential Switch is very useful for creatively directing multiple sources to a single output. In this patch multiple waveforms from a single multi-waveform output oscillator are input into the rs150. A signal present in the ‘CLOCK IN’ input will sequentially step through the rs150 inputs. The rs150 enables each note of the sequence to select a unique waveform from the multi-waveform output oscillator which is processed differently."

Under the racked Minimoog, under the cat.

"This is a very rare Hohner S4 string synthesizer. I have found no information about this item anywhere. Is it a prototype? I don't know. I do know its a cool paraphonic divide-down synthesizer with "cello" and "strings" sections. Two release modes, fast decay and slow decay. Three octave select buttons. Here is the sound. I am guessing it was manufactured in the mid-to-late 1970s. It operates like it should. Cosmetically, it looks fair for an instrument that has obviously been gigged. The tear in the tole on one of the close-ups has been glued. I will ship carefully, in two boxes, as it has a heavy, boat anchor style power supply with a volume pedal. Here's the only audio sample I have of it. Sorry, its half-way in. https://soundcloud.com/isopod/isobot-1wip"

Korg Wavestation SR Synthesizer Demo Songs

Published on May 22, 2015 Sound Programming

"Factory demo songs from the Korg Wavestation SR rackmount synthesizer recorded direct with no effects.

The Wavestation SR was the last and most advanced synthesizer in Korg's Wavestation series. It had the expanded 4MB ROM (484 waveforms) found in the Wavestation EX and A/D and contained more patches, patch memories, wave sequences, and sequence step memory than the previous models.

The Wavestation SR lacks a vector joystick and needs an external controller to take full advantage of its abilities. It pairs nicely with a Yamaha vector synthesizer, such as the SY22, SY35, or TG33 and can be controlled with the MIDI joystick data transmitted by those devices.

2. WaveShift (1:35)
3. Dire Rain (3:40)

DIY Workshops at METRIX CREATE:SPACE Seattle

METRIX CREATE:SPACE in Seattle, WA, is a maker space for people interested in all forms of DIY. They have all the resources and tools you need including 3D printers. They also have a number of workshops scheduled throughout the year. Their latest is a Light Sensitive Theremin Edition workshop:

"Hey! We've got an exciting series of workshops put together by resident engineer and awesome instructor Morgan Redfield. It's the Light Sensitive Theremin Edition: in three parts!

First up of the series is Intro to Schematic Design. Morgan will guide you through making electronics schematics, which is the first step in both properly documenting and moving from the breadboard to custom made circuit boards. You'll learn how to do this on Upverter, a cloud-engineering platform for hardware design. This is a great chance to ask specific questions about using this platform and discuss how to plan and go about designing your schematic.

Next up is Intro to PCB Design-- you will learn to turn the light sensitive theremin schematic into a circuit board! You will be guided through layout, finding parts and exporting a file that is ready for manufacturing. Fear this step no more, as you will learn to avoid common mistakes and ask an experienced engineer some specific advice that might help your future board-designing self.

The last in the series is Intro to Surface Mount Soldering. Have you become an expert with through-hole soldering and are ready to move further? Surface mount soldering is a powerful skill, you enter the world of tiny components which are used in most devices today. You will learn hands on how to populate and solder an SMD circuit board and go home confident that you have a working board.

You can read up more or sign up for these workshops on our Calendar or Buy & Learn page. You can always email, call, or stop in with questions!"

New Grove Audio WS-104 FM Operator aka the FM Ogre & GMS-1340 Polywav™ In the Works

via Grove Audio (no pics):

"FM Operator, WAV Player, VCO In Prototype

There is progress on the FM Ogre, officially the WS-104 FM Operator. The EU version prototype is up and running. Boards are in progress for the MU version which has some sub--assemblies. Hopefully, a demo and pictures of the panels will be up soon.

The GMS-1340 Polywav™ Player WAV sample player module prototype is coming together. This module will play back up to 14 16 bit 44.1 KHz stereo WAV files simultaneously, each with independent volume level under trigger or MIDI control. The first version for MU will use a 2MU panel. 16 1/4 inch jacks will allow gate triggers to start predefined sample playback. Two sets of CV and trigger inputs will allow voltage controlled initiation of sample playback from the current selected sample library. This will allow a group of samples representing a scale such as the Mellotron three violin sample set to be played from a CV source.

There is a MIDI DIN input that will accept note and control commands from a controller device to play sample sets. A separate sample set can be assigned to each of 16 MIDI channels. MIDI bank select commands can change the assigned sample bank for each channel.

A front panel OLED display and encoder will allow setting sample sets, MIDI channels, trigger assignments and other parameters. The SDHC card reader, accessible through the front panel will accept a card with up to 32GB of WAV samples. The user will then be able to select from a pool of 2048 samples to combine these into sample sets. Samples need to be recorded as 16 bit 44.1 KHz stereo WAV recordings. The sample length is not limited.

The GMS-321b Voltage Controlled Oscillator module is coming along. I have located a source for one of the last remaining NOS parts needed to build up the module. This is a recreation of the Moog 921b VCO and will be available as a 1MU module."

"Sparkle is a tool for advanced spectral hybridizations made of several algorithms that operate on frequency domain. By means of envelope preservation and phase-sync processing it can creates high-quality sound transformations.

The basic idea is to transfer the temporal structure of a sound (source) onto another sound (target) of which the spectral properties are preserved.
Simply put, you can take a voice and make it sing a Beethoven’s symphony!"

Roland System 1M Audio External Audio Input Demo

Published on May 22, 2015 zibbybone

Audio starts after :14.

"This was WAY more complicated than what I wanted it to be. I was thinking it'd be cool to run a drum machine through the Sys1M's filter and FX. The Sys1M does not have an envelope follower, so it has to be triggered. I run 16th note trigger pulses from the 606 to the 101's external sync. The 101's CV&Gate are run into the Sys1M to trigger the unit and send CV to the filter cutoff. Added a little Jupe 4 through Strymon BigSky and some SH-2 bass."

The above is common with many synths that have an audio input. Some synths like the ARP Odyssey have a VCA gain that does not require an envelop trigger so you can turn it up, turn the internal oscillators down and then feed something through it.
