An Interview with Gur Milstein of Tiptop Audio on Art + Music + Technology

Art + Music + Technology has a podcast interview up with Gur Milstein of Tiptop Audio. The following is the intro followed by a link to the mp3 if you want to grab it for the road. Be sure to check out the ret of Art + Music + Technology for more.

"I've always been a huge fan of Tiptop Audio's products: from their rock-solid Z3000 oscillator, to the center-of-my-universe Station 252 case, to the simple elegance of the Stackable cables, I've always found their products to be reliable, artful and best-of-class. I've also always wondered about the person behind this stuff, because it was clearly an interesting person.

Wow, what an understatement. Gur Milstein was super enthusiastic about being on the podcast, and we got a chance to run through his history as well as his design process. And, as part of the process, I came to further respect him - and be charmed by his friendliness. This interview is one of my favorites, because I started off not really knowing the person, and ending up developing a friendship with a person I really respect.

If you want to check out Gur's work, please jump over to tiptopaudio.com and check it out!

Enjoy!

via the seller: "So the time has come to let go of this awesome beast. I recently had it professionally serviced at Moog's headquarters in Asheville back in April 2014 when I last went to Moogfest. I drove there and hand delivered it to the factory personally :) Nick Montoya was the service technician who is also a developer for their new synths... he's awesome!

This thing plays and sounds perfect! All of the knobs and switches are originals and there. Aftertouch, touch ribbon, mod wheel... everything is perfect. Cosmetically its good, not museum quality by any means but really looks pretty great. One of the wood sides has a crack that actually happened when it was shipped back to me from the servicing. The badge on the face is actually a Micromoog badge not a Multimoog badge (see pictures) if your a super particular collector nerd like myself. There is a small (NOT BY ME) cigarette burn on the face that is pictured. The graphic/decal/underlay under the knobs is peeling up on the edges some but is in good shape. It never bothered me much, but I'm sure it could be re-glued if desired but it doesn't effect its playability."

Waldorf MicroWave XT Rack Mount Wavetable Synthesizer SN 830726305 with Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"In a 5U 19" Rack Mounting case, the Waldorf MicroWave XT is a wavetable synthesiser with 10 note polyphony and 8 part multi-timberal capabilities.

It has 256 user programmable sound programs arranged in 2 banks which can be combined in 128 Multi programs with up to 8 parts (split, layer or multi-channel) in each.

Each voice comprises 2 wavetable oscillators, ring modulator and noise generator, feeding into a mixer, two filters an amplifier and finally an effects unit. There are 2 LFOs and 4 Envelopes, an arpegiator and a modulation matrix that allows just about any parameter to be modulated by any source.

There are 96 wavetables made up from up to 64 waves per wavetable. It is possible to create your own wavetables using the built-in waves or upload your own waves via computer and a suitable editing program (not supplied).

There are 40 dedicated rotary controllers for all the most frequently used parameters and the rest can be accessed through a series of push buttons to allow editing of 4 parameters at a time through the large LCD display. This gives the best compromise between ease of use and the power of the modulation matrix.

The back panel sports 4 assignable audio outputs, PSU in, MIDI in Out and Through sockets and an audio in to allow external signals to be processed by the Microwave's sound shaping circuits.

Has V2.09 of the operating system installed.

Comes in the original box with PSU and manual."

Zvork Oberon Synthesizer for Propellerhead's Reason

Published on Jun 26, 2015 Zvork

"A presentation of some 20+ patches from the 300 of the Oberon Synthesizer factory sound bank. Oberon is a Rack Extension software synthesizer for Propellerhead Software's Reason DAW.
https://shop.propellerheads.se/produc..."

"The Oberon synthesizer has two oscillator sections and two filters. Each oscillator can be fed to one of the two filters or to both, in serial or parallel mode. These filters enable you to alter the timbre of your sound but are not the only mean to do so. Each oscillator can generate a number of different waves, from simple sawtooth and square to more complex metallic or robotic sounds. Each of these waves is in reality a wave sequence that can be played at different speeds.

Key Features
All the above could seem very classic if it wasn't for these following features.

Multi-point loop-able envelopes

Each of Oberon's four envelopes are defined by a user editable curve, with up to 16 points. These envelopes are furthermore loop-able, between the start and sustain point, with a tempo synchronization option.

Editable waves

There are two editable waves, or wave sequences, that the user can customize. For each of these wave sequences, two editable curves let you draw the shape of the start and end waveforms of the sequence.

Editable Filter response curves

n Oberon, the filters don't have predefined modes such as low pass, high pass or comb. Instead you define the filter response yourself, again with an editable curve. Each filter response can morph between two curves for even more dramatic and changing effects.

X-Morph between oscillators

This special feature lets you smoothly morph between two sound sources, potentially of different pitches and timbre. Morph between a pitch downed version of the same oscillator or between oscillator 1 and oscillator 2 for original transitions. The morphing effect can also be masked for certain portions of the spectrum if, for instance, you want to apply the character of one sound source solely to the high frequencies.

Unison and Octave virtual voices

To fatten your sounds, each oscillator can be virtually duplicated up to 8 times with a pitch detune. After that, if this isn't enough, another virtual copy of the resulting sound can be added to your final sound mix at an octave higher. As the term “virtual copy” coins, all this is extremely efficient on your CPU.

Timbre bend

If you are in need of metallic inharmonic sounds, this is the functionality you need. With it you can quickly bend your sound to mimic highly rigid strings, bells or quirky buzzes, in a predictable way.

Separate voice audio and gate outputs

On the back panel you will find 8 separate outputs for both stereo audio and CV gate. Individual voices can be distributed among these outputs.

Patches

Oberon comes with over 300 patches in all categories."

Future Retro Zillion Sequencer SN Z0153 with Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"The Zillion is a single track algorithmic MIDI sequencer based on the principles of the Triadex Muse. The Muse used counters and a shift register to generate more than a million musical melodies.

The Zillion expands on these ideas to add more features and functionality, providing a zillion possibilities for you to discover.

There are 16 operating modes. These include Playback, Tempo, Swing, Direction, Loop, Transpose, Scale, Scale Program, Melody, Rhythm, Velocity, Theme, Shift Register, MIDI OUT, MIDI IN, and Sync.

PLAYBACK
The Playback mode allows you to Stop, Start, Restart, Pause, and Manually Step through a sequence.

TEMPO
The Tempo mode allows you to set the rate the sequence will play back at. The tempo can range from 25-250 BPM. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one tempo to another, or can also be changed gradually.

SWING
Swing adds a human feel by delaying the start of every other note by a set percentage. The swing range is from 50-75%. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one swing value to another, or can also be changed gradually.

DIRECTION
Four consectutive directions can be entered to determine if the internal counters will increment or decrement, causing a pattern to play forwards or backwards each time a loop point is reached.

LOOP
A loop point will cause the internal counters ro reset, limiting the number of steps a pattern will play before repeating. The loop point can range from 1-16 beats, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, or 64 bars, or can also be set to free-running. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one point point to another, or can also be changed gradually..

TRANSPOSE
Sequences can be transposed by up to 36 semitones within the Transpose mode. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one transpose value to another, or can also be changed gradually..

SCALE
There are 99 Scales that determine what notes the sequencer can generate. Scales 1-16 are presets, while scales 17-99 are user definable. Four hot keys allow you to set and instantly jump from one scale to another, or can also be gradually changed.

SCALE PROGRAM
User scales can be programmed with the Zillion's front panel controls, or using any MIDI controller keyboard. Each scale holds eight pitch values. You can also think of these scales as simple 8-step sequences that can then be "remixed" by the sequencer algorithms. A global tranpose feature is also included in this mode, where any MIDI controller keyboard can be used to tranpose sequences.

MELODY
In the Melody mode you can select up to four sources to determine the melody being generated. These sources include counters, shift register outputs, or can also be set simply on or off.

RHYTHM
In the Rhythm mode you can select up to two sources to determine the rhythm being generated. These sources include counters, shift register outputs, or can also be set simply on or off. Rhythms generated will include note-off, note-on (50% duration), note-on (100% duration), or 32nd notes. In addition there is a Rhythm Density value ranging from 0-255. This parameter determines how complex or full the rhythm will be. There are also 3 possible GateTypes to further determine what types of rhythms are generated.
