Published on Jul 15, 2015 Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizers
Update: Re-Published on Jul 16, 2015

"An epic shift in the definition of what a modular can be. The Pittsburgh Modular Patch Box redefines modular synthesis around the venerable stomp box. A monster performance device for guitarists and synthesists alike. A patchable, modular system designed to handle anything.

A playground for unrestricted creativity, the Patch Box is a fully patchable, customizable effects pedal. The open architecture allows the patch box to create unique effects unattainable with standard, fixed signal path guitar pedals."

RA Sessions: Octave One - A Better Tomorrow / The Forgotten

Published on Jul 15, 2015 Resident Advisor

Spot the synths.

"One of techno's best live acts bring the heat.

This might not seem significant on the face of it, but Octave One are the only act we've had on Sessions who wanted us to use their first take. (In fact, we had to gently persuade them to record a second.) You see, Lenny and Lawrence Burden believe that live performance is about singular moments. They've spent the last 15 years establishing a reputation as one of techno's preeminent live acts, and in the club you don't get second chances. This attitude is reflected in their setup: the Burdens are lifelong devotees of hardware. They develop their technique on synths, controllers and effects as a musician would with an instrument. They perform using a nest of gear that wouldn't look out of place at NASA, and insist on travelling with it all no matter which continent they're booked on.

The Octave One shows also have the advantage of being able to draw from 25 years of timeless techno. The Burdens were part of Detroit's "second wave," and have been releasing music on labels like Tresor, Transmat and their own 430 West since 1990. They're best know for "Black Water," a poignant classic that eventually sold over a million copies following its release in 2000. There have also been four Octave One albums, the latest of which, Burn It Down, was released last month through 430 West. With all of this in mind, we were honoured to welcome Lenny and Lawrence to our London HQ, where they performed slamming versions of two tracks from their new record, "A Better Tomorrow" and "The Forgotten."

Tiptop Audio Introduces the CYMBL909 Eurorack Drum Module

via Tiptop Audio

"Introducing the CYMBL909, part of our series of drum modules that brings those classic percussion sounds into the modular synth world, further expanding the Tiptop modular drum machine.

CYMBL909 is a dual voice module containing the TR-909’s original Crash and Ride circuits adapted for use in Eurorack modular synthesizer format and was tested to sound like a fresh machine coming out of the assembly line back in the 80s. On top of the original, we have added some great new features that expand the sound palette of what can be produced with these two voice circuits.

The original circuits use a combination of low-fi 6 bit sound samples that pass through a series of analog elements that provide envelope and filtering to the source sound. The CYMBL909 module adds manual and voltage control of the sample’s analog tuning section creating tones which range from heavy industrial at the low end, to the original crash/ride sound at the mid range, and bright hats like sounds at the top end. Modulating the Tune with an Envelope, CV sequencer or LFO makes interesting sound bending effects, which can be applied either in or out of sync with the triggering of the sounds.

Just like the other drums in this series, the CYMBL909 high-powered output gain stage allows you to further enhance the sound through distortion and clipping. We have designed a dual pulse-shaper circuit on each gate input so you can trigger your CYMBL909 with Trigger/Gate signals from step sequencers, clock dividers, or any other pulse/clock sources."

Guy J - Lamur - Tony's Live Hardware Remix

Published on Jul 15, 2015 Tony Horgan

"My recreation of the Guy J classic, played live on a Korg Volca Keys, Volca Bass, Roland Aira TR-8 and Cyclone Analogic TT-303 Bass Bot. Recorded on a Tascam DP24. Check out the original mix and super-funky Henry Saiz remix if you like this :-) https://pro.beatport.com/release/lamu... Tech details follow for those who are interested.... The TR-8 is the MIDI master, which starts all the other gear. The bassline is played on the TT-303 Bass Bot in "Track" mode, using 4 patterns. The chords are played by the Korg Volca Bass, which is set to a tempo of 16bpm (1/8th of the song's tempo of 128bpm). This is not synced with a cable, just started manually. The Volca Bass is sent through the Gate on the TR8 to give it a rhythmic pulsing sound. The main melody is played on the Volca Keys, made up of two patterns recorded in 1/4 tempo in Flux mode to get more notes in. To get the melody into the Volca Keys, it was programmed on a Bass Bot and then sent to the Volca Keys via MIDI, with the Volca Keys set to Record mode. All effects are from the Tascam DP24 (compression, EQ and delay)."

Joey Blush has been on the modular scene for a while now working on everything from sound design to industrial/ebm to techno. His last 12" just came out on aufnahme + wiedergabe moving towards an even more dance-oriented sound but still never leaving behind his ability for immense atmosphere and dark melodies.

KORG PROPHECY | HD DEMO | Favorite Patches / Walkthrough Part 2

Published on Jul 14, 2015 Synthesizer Style

"KORG PROPHECY Synth Demo, Part 2 of a 2 Part video series on my favorite patches, and a 'walkthrough' of programming changes. Be sure to watch for a deeper video series on programming soon to follow.

The KORG PROPHECY was among the first "Virtual Analog" synthesizers from the mid to late 90s, and is one of my favorite synths due to it's truly extensive architecture. It remains one of the more complex and unique sounding "Physical Modeling" Synthesizers ever made.

Feel free to 'Like' this video if you found it useful. That is the only tangible recompense I look forward to for my efforts.
Thanks."

QUASIMIDI Technox | 16 Part Multitimbral Synthesizer with Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Lots of pretty solid basses, rave leads, hooverish sounds, acid squeals, spacey pads and some great drum kits including full sets of TR-808, 909 and 606 hits. There are 512 presets, which for a 1995 synth wasn't bad!

Technox is oriented towards dance musicians. A sequencer is also included which can address up to 16 MIDI parts. Each part has its own level, pan and effects send, and much more. The presets tend to cover early-90s techno but a touch of editing can go a long way into many other genres. There's a lot of good stuff for darker and ambient genres!

The Technox's greatest asset, ultimately, is its 16-part multitimbrality. Channel 10 is fixed to addressing drums, but the other 15 channels can go where you want. There's a ton of good sounds in the Technox, and it is very useable in many electronic music genres."
