Reverse Engineered Yamaha OPL3 FM Synthesizer in an FPGA playing Descent & Doom

"The OPL3 was a popular FM synthesis chip used in most PCs in the 90s. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_...

OPL3 FPGA code written entirely in SystemVerilog RTL. Music is played back via a port of imfplay from DOS to the ARM Cortex CPU on the Zynq FPGA (running bare metal C++). Music is stored in DRO format captured by running the original games in DOSBox (its essentially register dumps of the OPL3 every 1ms). This particular song is from Doom level 1.

P.S. This also serves as a motion study exercise, I conclude that having parts in the tray parallel to the circuit board and the picking and placing hand is most optimal. Closing the lid after every place prevents accidental spillage of parts, most importantly picking the part inside of the container that is also rotated same as its orientation on the circuit board is advantageous. Handling the parts in their containers is also desired to minimize the spillage and extra travel moves.

Sad news in via Juergen W. Last Monday, July 20, Dieter Moebius passed away from cancer. Above is a small playlist featuring his recent work with Michael Rother (ex-Kraftwerk guitarist), followed by some of his earlier work with Brian Eno, and finally his earliest days with Kluster. He was a true pioneer of electronic music and remained active in the electronic music scene throughout his lifetime. You'll find countless videos on his work and influence on YouTube. He formed Kluster in 1969 with Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Tangerine Dream's Conrad Schnitzler. He collaborated with Brian Eno and Conny Plank, and continued his career with ex-Kraftwerk guitarist Michael Rother.

"Dieter Moebius (16 January 1944 – 20 July 2015) was a German/Swiss experimental/ krautrock/ ambient/ electronic musician.

Moebius studied art in Brussels and Berlin and met there Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Conrad Schnitzler (Tangerine Dream). They founded a band Kluster in 1969. After the departure of Schnitzler, they changed their name to Cluster. Later Moebius and Roedelius founded the band Harmonia with Michael Rother (Neu!), which also collaborated with Brian Eno.

Dieter Moebius was involved into numerous projects with such musicians as Conny Plank, Mani Neumeier (Guru Guru).

Moebius toured with Michael Rother as Rother & Moebius in 2007.[1] Additionally, on 27 November 2007, a Harmonia reunion concert was held in Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin, where the band performed together live for the first time since 1976.[2][3] He died on 20 July 2015 of cancer.[4][5]"

My Monotribe (Liwiusztribe) has MIDI In and Out (synthesizer part works on Channel 1, drum part works on Channel 10), MIDI supports velocity, pitch bend, modulation, EG, cutoff, resonance, LFO (rate, int, shape, target, mode, wave), drum modification: BD decay, SD decay, SD noise control (3 levels: no noise, short, long) HH noise volume control (3 levels: no noise, short, long). It has ON/OFF switch for OSC, to freak with external audio without any synth parts. My friend added some anti-clicking thing to it also... And, of course, new white overlay.

"When I learned the Moog Little Phatties (is that even the proper plural form??) were being discontinued, I ran out and bought a limited edition white Moog Little Phatty. Then not long after, the Sub 37 hit the market, and I realized that was REALLY what I wanted (I wasn't so much interested in the Sub-Phatty because of the 2 octave keyboard). As I wanted to do SOMEthing with the Little Phatty before I sold it, I recorded this song in Propellerhead Reason. All synth sounds and one synth kick drum are from the Little Phatty. All the other percussion is from assorted Propellerhead Reason drums synths.

MIDI was only used for the drums parts...all the synth clips were played in real time (no timing correction) and arranged in Reason."
