Fugue Machine Demo Jam Session

iTunes: Fugue Machine | multi-playhead sequencer - Alexandernaut

"I just got Fugue Machine by Aexander Naut so this in my first impression. I dropped some quarter notes in the mix, synced it all up with Patterning and hit play. Wow instant satisfaction. I can see the potential in this cool new app.

For more info visit http://ipadloops.com/fugue-machine-ba...

It's pretty cool. The main MIDI pattern plays along with 3 more versions (playheads) of that pattern. They can play forwards, backwards, forwards and backwards, and with different rhythmic notation and durations. OH you can also change the pitch and octave of an over all playhead.

FUGUE MACHINE is like “Bach In A Box”. It is a musical tool inspired by composition techniques used in Baroque music and Serialism — e.g. Bach’s canons and fugues, and Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique. The idea was to design a tool to manipulate a melody’s speed, direction, and pitch, as well as play multiple variations of the melody simultaneously.

FUGUE MACHINE is the world’s first multi-playhead piano roll. Create a musical sequence and play it back with up to four playheads at once — each at various speeds, directions, and pitches. You see the playheads dance over the music sequence, and hear the complex patterns that emerge."

MODSTAR Sensei Analog 4: 'Simple Simple Funky Bassline'

Published on Oct 8, 2015 StudioElectronics

"A not so Quick Go at the 1st Sensei Analog System Featuring Nearly Everything Screwed In

The 5089 Filter's resonance is jacked into the Sci Fi—so no 5089 audio is to be heard in any of these "Quck Go" dems. Scandalous.

Nothing systematic here folks; we just didn't want #SA1 to leave the shop without a hug and kiss—c'mon it's the brothers Regis (an oblique reference to 'Raging Bull')!

Pre final tuning/calibration, and no we weren't tuned to concert.

Detailed individual module demos to follow.

A bit of sweetening tends to be placed mainly on the right channel; in this 'Low Light El Segundo Shop Demo' there is a touch of wet on the left; the right side is also blessed by a tasteful L3 treatment.

iPad mic audio gets its piece of the action near the 9:30 mark and builds until the conclusion for ambience / s&g sake.

Minimal normalization applied to the left.

Enjoy,

Moog Mother 32 - Quick Test by Genshi Media Group

Moog Mother 32 - My Very First Quick Test Published on Oct 8, 2015 Genshi Media Group

"This is just a quick, getting to know you, first test of the Moog Mother-32. I came up with this patching and sequence literally 10 minutes after unboxing. This was done in one take, no multi-tracking, and every sound you hear is coming from the Mother-32 in real time, including the percussion. With all of the patch points, along with the noise source, you can get very interesting percussion elements going at the same time as both your Saw and Pulse wave voices... not bad for a "one oscillator" synth! (a touch of reverb was added from Valhalla VintageVerb.) Now I'm just waiting for my 3-Tier Rack to be delivered so I can add my other two Mother-32s... which means more and better videos coming real soon!"

Stand-Alone Oberheim Mini Sequencer with Mods

"A working Oberheim Mini Sequencer. Each knob in the Control Voltage Preset area has two parts, upper knob and lower knob, the uppers are for Seq 1 and the lowers for for Seq 2. On the original design, Seq 1 and Seq 2 have their own independent outputs, both working. This particular unit has been modified so that both sequences are also CV output through the 'OUT' on the front panel, and you can switch between both using the '1/1' switch just above the 'OUT'. Please see photo. This mod works great, and is fun.

There is an additional mod called 'RESET' on the front panel, which I have never tried.

I used this with a minimoog, and it works great. I tried using it with an ARP AXXE, and the ARP CLOCK seems to have been disable in order to make one of the mods work.

But aside from the ARP CLOCK not working and the RESET mod untested, the rest works great.

Like I said, I used this to drive my minimoog - and you can also use the EXT CLOCK to sync with the TRIG OUT of a TR-909. So you can have a TR-909 driving the Oberheim Mini Sequencer driving a Minimoog. It's a blast!"

"What a fantastic machine. It was even tuned and enhanced by Jered Flickinger himself so that it can achieve a smoother attack. Best acid box I've ever worked with, but it does so much more than just acid. Works with all your vintage gear as well. I've never seen a 7-pole filter, but this one has it, and a 3-pole as well. Comes with original manual and original Jameco power supply, plus some patches and patch templates to help get you started. I never thought I'd part with it, which explains the Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin stickers, but it doesn't fit into my new show."

Macbeth Studio Systems M5

"This is the original M5 with the black & orange colour scheme, as used for the ARP2600.

Note that whilst it ‘looks’ like an ARP2600, the M5's 'sound' is more Moog and Oberheim. (The original ARP2600 stole the Moog filter design of course, hence epoxy sealed units, lawsuit, etc...)

IMO it is sonically much more powerful and versatile than the 2600, based on the dual filter design alone, as outlined below.

It has both a Moog 'based' (and classic) transistor ladder 24dB/Oct filter for VCF1, PLUS an Oberheim 'based' State Variable 12dB/Oct filter for VCF2.

As well as dual VCF's, I often used the CV controlled Stereo Pan Amp + Spring Reverb for Stereo FX of one or other, or even a VCF MIX, such that I had 4 audio ‘stems’ per patch for mixing.

A glimpse of the huge flexibility on offer here and that's only on the output... There are more modulation & audio paths possible than I care to mention... 1000's basically!

It has a total of 70 sliders which makes it easier to see the settings at distance for many of the functions, as well as allowing for easier ‘patch mixing’ as one might do or have done on a classic analogue mixing desk. It could be a great educational tool in that regard, or else any synth fan could simply get lost in the possibilities and enjoy the sonic adventures... There is no manual for this synth, so it is assumed you are not a beginner to analogue synthesis & CV control...

As well as using as 2 separate mono synths, the M5 has ‘per Oscillator CV’, allowing you to play 3 note polyphonic chords with the right CV/Gate set-up and opens up another whole area that analogue monosynths can’t access... In Mono mode you can of course easily detune to play ‘fixed’ chords shapes from one note in any case and is great fun to experiment with this alone.

As pictures shows this is a huge synth. As well as the sliders it has 23 rotary/switchable pots and over 100 ¼ jack sockets- not 3.5mm mini-jacks as on the 2600.

I planned to buy as a synth 'for life' but a new venture now requires serious funds. I have had 9 years of sonic fun on this amazing synth and now it can be yours..."

"Trap Music" vs. Ratcheting?

Trap Drum Basics: Super Neat Beat Cheat Sheet

Published on Oct 8, 2015 Propellerhead

I just saw the tutorial video above come in from Propellerhead's YouTube channel. It's a tutorial on how to create "Trap" beats. At 3:04 the video states that "Trap Music" came out nearly 30 years after the 808 in 2012. The style is based on the technique applied to drum sequencing but if you think about it, it arrived much earlier with ratcheting in sequencers as used by Klaus Schulze in Tangerine Dream. On a related note, Suit & Tie Guy claims to have created the reference in roughly 2003 or 2004 at 24:08 in the video below (previously posted). The technique was integrated into Numerology and was called Gate Divide. A second tutorial video on Ratcheting from Roger Arrick of Synthesizers.com is further below. I don't have time to dig in and compare the math between "Trap Music" vs "Ratcheing" as I need to catch up on the morning's posts, but the technique at first glance does appear to be similar if not the same. As for when a specific style of music came about is more a distinction between when a technique is applied vs. when it becomes common, labelled or claimed. It's all just words & technique in the end.

FUGUE MACHINE | Multi-Playhead Sequencer for iPad

"FUGUE MACHINE for iPad, the world's first multi-playhead music sequencer."

FUGUE MACHINE | Multi-Playhead Sequencer for iPad (Bach Melody)

iTunes: Fugue Machine | multi-playhead sequencer - Alexandernaut

"BACH IN A BOX.

FUGUE MACHINE is a tool inspired by composition techniques used in Baroque music and Serialism — e.g. Bach’s canons and fugues, and Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique. The idea was to design a tool to manipulate a melody’s speed, direction, and pitch, as well as play multiple variations of the melody simultaneously.

As it turned out, the best implementation for this was to reimagine one of the most fundamental building blocks of all music sequencers: the piano roll.

THE PIANO ROLL, REIMAGINED.

FUGUE MACHINE is the world’s first multi-playhead piano roll. Create a musical sequence and play it back with up to four playheads at once — each at various speeds, directions, and pitches. You see the playheads dance over the music sequence, and hear the complex patterns that emerge.

It’s mesmerizing."

Dave Smith Instruments Poly Evolver Keyboard: Ethereal Pad

Published on Oct 8, 2015 Sacred Synthesis

"This improvisation is so minimalistic that it should be considered only a sound demonstration, which was my intention. Another all-Evolver improvisation - a simple dreamy piece using parallel fifths and an occasional meandering melody.

The Poly Evolver Keyboard excels at producing this sort of breathy ethereal pad, but finding just the right digital wave shape among the 96 choices is time-consuming. Each one reacts differently to even subtle changes in the filter setting and keyboard range, so that much experimentation is required. This particular sound is wonderful to a point, but then - open wide the filter or play in the upper end of the keyboard and the digital aliasing goes berserk, making it musically un-useable. You can hear the aliasing at certain points in this piece.

Sound design is a painstaking process, but it does have its rewards.

Instrumentation:
DSI Poly Evolver Keyboard (2)
DSI Poly Evolver Rack
DSI Evolver Desktop
