RIP Dennis Colin, Co-Designer of the ARP 2600 & the Aries Modular

Some sad news in via Grant of Music Technologies Group. It has come to his attention that Dennis Colin of ARP and Aires fame has passed away. There is a GoFundMe page set up to help his daughter with the funeral and travel costs. Click through for details.

Dennis Colin not only designed the ARP 2600 with Alan R. Pearlman, he also built the Aries Modular (see this post and this post for reference), and he later ran Colin Electronics.

The image to the left is from an article in Guitar World from this year, back on February 9. The following is a short excerpt:

"The short story goes like this: Dennis spent several years at the ARP company, creating the 2600 and other strange instruments. Eventually the company changed hands and he moved on to other work away from music.

Years after retiring, Dennis now lives alone in a small house somewhere in New England. He recently lost his wife and has been having a rough time. A chance meeting between his daughter and my guitar-building buddy, Ben "C.B. Gitty" Baker, led to my eventual visit to his house. I stood on his doorstep feeling like Ralphie about to meet Santa Claus.

A frail man at 71, Dennis has sharp mind of a teenager. Although he left ARP Synthesizers many years ago, he never left music and he enthusiastically showed me his secret lab upstairs in the house. There were oscilloscopes, strange strobe lights, a homemade 500-watt amp (!) and model airplanes scattered about. The dude lights his cigarettes from a Tesla coil! When he talked about music, he referenced everything from da Vinci to string theory.

Forget Ralphie...I was in the inner-sanctum of the musical Willie Wonka!"

A great man behind some great synths. He will be remembered. Be sure to see the GoFundMe page.

Update: Memorial Service to Be Held at the MIT Chapel on Friday, December 18th at 1PM.

"By far one of the toughest sounding bass synthesizers, with 2 VCOs and 1 massive sounding sub oscillator.
5 different wave forms, auto-bend, LFO with sine, square and sample hold.
Resonant filter, self-oscillation lowpass filter, mod by e.g, external audio in and some much more!
It has CV gate in and output.
The synth is in full working order and sounds amazing."

The watsON? NOISE Festival 2013 - Curated by Golan Levin and Spike Wolff
'Ancient life was all silence.... with the invention of the machine, Noise was born.' -- Luigi Russolo, 'L'Arte dei rumori'
Noise continually surrounds us, from white static to violent intensity. We are absorbed into, embraced by, and assaulted with sound. Vibrating through our bodies, we capitulate as it engulfs us and permeates our psyche. In the still of its quiet absence and the thrill of its deafening roar, the force of sound is a constant. wats:ON? 2013 explores the realm of noise through a variety of analog, digital, and apparatus enhanced sound-music performances. Noise asks you to surrender to the possibility of the rush of the sublime.

Funny, I don't think I ever thought the intro is reminiscent of Dr. Who until now. Was it on purpose or just coincidence?

And the original with the mighty Yamaha GX1 (the Dr. Who riff is less obvious with everything else going on but it's there):

RedSound Darkstar Demos & Review by Ostraka (John Keston)

Great demos.  Check out the full review on Audio Cookbook.  According to the review the DarkStar was the "Internet's most reviled synth".  I don't recall this, but then I didn't spend too much time in the forums after launching MATRIXSYNTH.  I have an XP2 myself and love it, although the interface does take a little getting used to.  It appears John Keston is pro Darkstar as well:

"For me the DarkStar fulfills a spectrum of features that I’ve been looking for in a desktop poly. It has a low profile so I can use it along side a collection of other devices while performing. It has eight voice polyphony allowing me to produce dense harmonies. It has a bloody joystick to control the filter and resonance! The joystick can also be configured to control ring modulation and oscillator mix. Many knobs make sculpting the sound in realtime possible. The LFOs have ramp, triangle, square, sine, pulse, sample & hold, and “random” waveforms. What random does is pretty remarkable. Similar to slew on the Novation Bass Station II, it interpolates or slides between random values instead of jumping to them like sample & hold does. This is especially nice for panning and one of the things that distinguishes the DarkStar from other VAs of the time."

DSI Poly Evolver Keyboard: Improvisation LVI

Published on Nov 22, 2015 Sacred Synthesis

"A gentle piece performed entirely on Evolvers, with a soft digital pad on one instrument and a violin-like analog patch on the other. One Poly Evolver Keyboard has eight voices and the other only four. The two together make a perfect compliment, with the four-voice instrument being reserved for melody, yet with the ability to add a few harmonies. With this arrangement - and especially with the bass being provided with the feet on the pedalboard - there is no sense of musical limitation. Anything but! It's all a matter of thinking correctly as you sit to play.

"Showing off a prototype of our new Airtenuator floating passive attenuator module. Here used to control envelope depth from a Steffensen Envelarp on Dinsync.info SARA VCF filter cutoff."

4. RYO VC Sequencer Beats & Bass

"In this clip we're using VC Sequencer and its Trig Xpander in VC mode to generate pitch voltages for the bassline and triggers for the synth drums. The VC Sequencer is controlled by a stepped random waveform from FC Modulation Druid, this is in turn tempo-synced to the master clock lfo (Doepfer A-147) via an RCD. This is also used to provide extra gates and triggers mixed into and modulating the rhythm for more movement and swing. The jittery trigger action is due to a combined effect of the dirty output of the Modulation Druid as well as an opamp on the VC Sequencer not being up to spec to handle dirtiness very well, this has since been remedied with a better opamp for the job that solves the jitter in the VC Sequencers sent out to customers."

5. RYO VC Sequencer VC Mode

6. Roll Your Own general wiggling.

"One RYO (Roll Your Own) VC Sequencer controlling pitch on Livewire oscillators (AFG) and Frequensteiner filter. Notice how the pitch doesn't drop when the second oscillator is patched in via passive multing via stack cable 17 seconds in. A second RYO VC Sequencer controls decay legnth on a Maths envelope.

The second timbre (every 4 steps) is triggered with passive mixed trigs from the gate/trigger expander of the RYO VC Sequencer, set in trigger mode. It is a Livewire Dalek modulator making the sound and Doepfer Wasp filter slowly modulated by Vulcan modulator. Envelope is also Maths.

Both timbres use RYO Optodists as VCAs and distortion with LED limiters on. Clock is a Doepfer VC LFO."
