AKAI AX-60 Analog Synthesizer

"Akai AX-60 Analog Synthesizer. The Synth is in good condition considering the 30+ years of age. All Knobs and sliders are operating as they should, no missing slider caps or knobs. Powerful "Dark" sounding synth with an extraordinary aggressive Filter. This is a VCO (Voltage Control Oscillator) Synth not a DCO (Digitally controlled) Some minor scratches here and there, especially on the underside. One side cheek has some marks (see pictures)

The Synth has a dedicated connector to the Akai S612 Sampler which can be used as a second oscillator of sorts. The connector cable can also be customized to route any other sound source through the filters of the AX-60. Very cool feature."

1986 AKAI AX 60 ANALOG VCO POLYPHONIC SYNTHESIZER by Distance Research

Published on Dec 3, 2012 distanceresearch

"Ok, not quite a Juno, or a Polysix. However it's a very unique analog machine, capable of FM sounding distortion and almost digital crispness- yet it is a VCO synth. What I can say is that a Juno cannot make these sounds. I like it for classic 80's leads and pads, and some edgy electro sounds. You can get some great sounds from this machine and if you love synths it's worth the money just for a few of the features. One thing to consider is that many of the synths it is compared to are better, but recognizable, the AX 60 is sort of sleeper, much like Danelectro guitars were in the 90's. A cool and good alternative for sure. A few of the sounds I enjoy on this machine including some arpeggios."

1960'S RAJ MUSICALS SARAANG 4 OSCILLATOR ANALOG TANPURA by Distrance Research

Published on Dec 18, 2012 distanceresearch

"Pretty rare instrument. From what I gather Raj Musicals is kind of the Yamaha/Casio of Indian instruments in modern times. In the 60's maybe 70's they produced the Saraang Deluxe analog tanpura. It runs on C batteries or power cord, has a built in speaker and 1/8" output. Produces some pretty pleasing drone sounds from its 6 note sequence. Pretty fun little analog machine, capable of pleasing detuning and tone manipulating."

Update via Loscha in the comments: "These are actually from the 90s, although they surely do look 60s.

I contacted Radel Saraang for information about these devices, and they no longer had the schematic, but, confirmed manufacturing time frame."

1967 ACE TONE RHYTHM ACE FR 3 ANALOG DRUM MACHINE by Distance Research

Published on Dec 19, 2012 distanceresearch

"1967 to I think 1974 Ace Tone analog drum machine. Ace Tone was pre Roland and made some pretty cool sounding drum machines. This unit has several presets that can be mixed and matched to create some usable patterns. Definitely has that vintage sound reminiscent of that early TG sound or Jarre- Oxygene, Mixed with some effects and cool, I suspect there is ways of aftermarket midi/dun sync-ability."

MDRONE Fun 1

http://www.evatontechnologies.com

"Experimenting with the Evaton SDIY MDRONE. I was trying for something fairly musical, as opposed to noisy, which this thing does rather well. I ran the MDRONE through a Pittsburgh filter in bandpass mode, through a VCA triggered by a steady clock to generate a pulsing rhythm. I tweaked the inboard filter during the take and wiggled a bit for some variation. In addition to the MDRONE, I triggered a rudimentary kick (low square wave) and a Piston Honda piped through a formant filter to flesh out the beat. The MDRONE and Piston Honda got some delay added."

Ninstrument Introduces the Rhythm TR-727 Eurorack Module

via Ninstrument

"Do you remember some of the cool unusual drum machines from the 80’s? The TR-727 was one of the unusual ones as it featured primarily Latin percussion sounds like Bongo’s and Maracas. Jan Ostman has made a recreation of those sounds and built them into a chip. More info here.

I designed a 10HP eurorack module that accepts his chips and tried to bring back a little aesthetic flair from the design of those early drum machines. We currently have a Indiegogo campaign that will be ending shortly. If you would like to receive one of these and support us to keep going down the vintage drum path please pledge here: http://igg.me/at/drumulator

I will be making a video demo shortly for this, so expect an update soon."

Arturia advances iSEM synth app to work with Apple’s all-new Audio Unit Extensions

iTunes: iSEM Synthesizer - Arturia

As mentioned in this post, iSEM now supports the Audio Unit Extentions. Here's the official press release:

"GRENOBLE, FRANCE: music software and hardware developer Arturia is proud to advance its award- winning iSEM — an authentic-sounding software recreation of the trailblazing Seventies-vintage Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module® (SEM) for Apple’s iPad — as one of the first fully-compatible apps for Apple’s all-new Audio Unit Extensions technology, as of November 19...

Apple’s Audio Unit Extensions is an all-new technology in its latest iOS 9 (mobile) and OS X El Capitan (Mac) operating systems that aims to bring the Audio Units (AU) system-level full plug-in architecture model that was previously only available to third-party developers like Arturia in OS X to both OS X and iOS! And Arturia is one of the first third-party developers to enthusiastically embrace its innovative musical advancement with the release of the latest iSEM update. This represents a much more user- friendly experience than the traditional way of interlinking apps using Inter-App Audio or Audiobus, which was the case with previous versions of this award-winning app.

According to iSEM development partner Rolf Wöhrmann, “The main difference is that you can now run iSEM from within an app like GarageBand for iPad in much the same way as you would work with standard Arturia plug-ins when running them in desktop- or laptop-based host applications — integrating the great synth sounds of iSEM into your GarageBand projects without leaving the GarageBand app, in other words. By using Audio Unit Extensions-compatible apps like iSEM, GarageBand users can extend its sonic capabilities above and beyond those of the built-in instruments into the wonderful world of Arturia. Indeed, it appears that we are one of the first — if not the first — to support this. That said, iSEM users can now easily record and multitrack their iSEM- based creations within GarageBand, adding drums, voice, guitar, and other sounds to make more complete musical arrangements, if they so wish. It’s also perfectly possible to have multiple instances of iSEM running in GarageBand — at least three or four when using latest-generation iPads, which was impossible with the previous ‘standalone’ version of iSEM.”

Truly trailblazing technology, then... in much the same way that the original Oberheim Synthesizer Expander Module® (SEM) was back in its day. How about a little history? Hatched by legendary synth designer Tom Oberheim back in 1974, the dual-oscillator SEM was originally conceived as a way of beefing up weaker-sounding compatible analogue monosynths of the time. It soon became a sought-after sound in its own right, so its Californian creator came up with a series of successive SEM-based instruments, first pairing up two SEMs with a 37-note keyboard and a simple analogue step sequencer to form the Two Voice, Oberheim’s first self-contained compact, duophonic synthesizer in 1975. Polyphonic programmability came courtesy of Oberheim’s breakthrough Polyphonic Synthesizer Programmer which — when hardwired into the fair-sized Four Voice (featuring four SEMs and a 49-note keyboard) in 1976 and enormous Eight Voice (eight SEMs set across two tiers) in 1977 — enabled the control voltages of many parameters for up to eight SEMs to be memorised for the first time. Though these instruments were undeniably groundbreaking, quickly finding favour with the likes of popular prog-rockers Rush and electronic music trailblazers Tangerine Dream, polyphony could only be achieved with multiple SEMs so each voice/module still had to be programmed independently, which was quite a daunting task — even by somewhat shaky Seventies standards!

Fast forward to today and the truly twenty-first century musical landscape has changed considerably. So has music technology itself. Indeed, most musicians take polyphony and programmability for granted — though not necessarily that still-sought-after Oberheim sound. Ingeniously, iSEM quite literally taps into all this and more as a cutting-edge iPad app, putting more musicality at anyone’s fingertips than its analogue namesake designer dared dream possible back in Oberheim’s Seventies salad days — all the more so since Arturia has had the foresight to adopt Apple’s Audio Unit Extensions technology so soon after its introduction, and all at a fraction of the cost of Oberheim’s original heavyweight hardware!

iPad 2 (or higher) owners can purchase and directly download the latest version of iSEM from the App Store for €9.99 EURO/$9.99 USD/£7.99 GBP here: [iTunes link]"

Synth Collection December 2015

Published on Dec 4, 2015 Pi Synth

"A walkthrough of the demos provided on the Synth Collection evaluation SD card. Virtually no edits, so lots of delays. Grab a drink before you watch. I break out of each demo with control-C otherwise the video would be half an hour long.

All demos are running on a Pi Model B+ overclocked to 1GHz to match the performance of Raspberry Pi Zero. The worst-case load is during 'Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth' at the end of the sawtooth solo, where CPU usage (measured by top -H) peaked at around 58%.

Sound was captured directly out of the IQaudIO DAC+ into a Behringer UCA202, so it's a stereo image and representative quality of how this thing really sounds, and a bit of the iPod mic signal was left in there (which picked up the MiniRig, driven by the IQaudIO headphone out) - the sound of typing is so exciting, don't you think?!

So think about this for a second - a micro SD card, 8G, is £1.99 and a Raspberry Pi Zero is £4. For a hardware investment of 5.99 plus an old USB hub you have hanging around the place, you get 8 glorious synthesizers. The value proposition is pretty remarkable. And you don't even need a MIDI keyboard, you can author complete tracks within the sequencer and preview them, and drag them to the gig. Perfect if you intend doing a cover of Baba O'Riley or Won't Get Fooled Again at short notice!"
