Synthmania quick tip #13 - The Moog Source ''Blue Monday'' patch

Published on Dec 16, 2015

"My 'quick tips' series is back, with a mega-classic synth bass patch, New Order's 'Blue Monday'. I spent a good couple of hours tonight listening to the record and attempting to recreate the patch. I think I got fairly close. For most of the two hours I thought it was a couple of pulses, it turns out it was - I think - simply two saws. With an octave of interval between them. Enjoy.."

RNA vactrol crossfade fun!

Published on Dec 16, 2015 littlem4tt

"Just messing around with a vactrol crossfader on the breadboard and then controlling it from the silent way lfo.

The bass sound is a system x oscillator and the other input channel is an fm sound which is a sys x osc modulated by the sine wave output from the yusynth osc.

The output from the crossfader is then fed into 1 channel of the stereo hearne morley HM2040 filter (12db)."

Note the auction lists the Z1 as a workstation, however it does not have any workstation features.

"This is a great analog modeling synth with 12-voice polyphony, thirteen waveforms, four LFOs, two resonant filters, two effects units and more. The ability to create unique sounds is endless. The factory patches could use some help, but overall the sound is very nice! It has a fully polyphonic arpeggiator that blows all others away. It has five preset arpeggio patterns and fifteen user patterns. Unfortunately there is no on-board sequencer. There is incredible real-time control available with knobs to control the two resonant filters, and a touch controlled 'XY' pad for tweaking patches in real-time."

BRIGHT SPARKS: New Synth Documentary Ignites Funding for Bob Moog Foundation

Follow-up to the Something's Coming teaser.

"Help Bright Sparks Synth Documentary Ignite Funding for Bob Moog Foundation Projects

'An engrossing and fascinating documentary that pays tribute to the modest but amazing innovators who changed the face of electronic music' - Vince Clarke

Last week Bright Sparks, a film project which documents the stories of a number of iconic electronic music pioneers and companies, was released in conjunction with the I Monster album of the same name.

Featuring eight of the most influential companies, Moog, Buchla, ARP, Chamberlin, Mellotron, EMS, EDP, and Freeman, the feature length documentary includes interviews with many of the legendary personnel involved in the development of the instruments including Peter Zinovieff (EMS), Ken Freeman (Freeman), Herb Deutsch (Moog), Alan Robert Pearlman (ARP), John Bradley (Mellotron).

The film is available via download only.

The creators of Bright Sparks, recognizing Bob Moog's seminal contribution to modern synthesis, are generously supporting the Bob Moog Foundation with 100 downloads of their movie as a means of raising funding for our educational project, Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, and our Archive Preservation Initiative.

Make a $25 (or more) donation to the Bob Moog Foundation by December 31, 2015 and receive a download code for Bright Sparks as a thank you for your support!

Exploring the human stories of success and adversity behind these early companies and instruments, the film captures the passion of these engineers who were driven to design something in much the same way as any artist or musician is driven to create.

You can see a trailer to the movie here. [embed above]

Join Bright Sparks in supporting our important work and get rare insights into the world of synthesizer and keyboard innovators that won't get anywhere else. Donate $25 or more here. We will send you a download code with simple instructions when you make your donation.

Many thanks to Dave Spiers, Chris McLeod, and I Monster, the team behind the Bright Sparks project, for your wonderful support of our projects and for your excellent documentation of electronic music history.

'Electronic music has been around for long enough to deserve its own historians and archaeologists. Dave Spiers is right at the top of the list: this loving and exhaustive study sets a new standard in instrument research, unravelling the tangled webs that lead to innovations' - Brian Eno"

TIPTOP AUDIO RECORDS VARIOUS ARTISTS 002

Double vinyl and digital issue

Tiptop Audio Records, Tiptop Audio’s label, consolidates a path that connects its instruments with the best electronic music composers of the moment. All projects that fit within the label are the result of direct experimentation of modules. The connection between the components creates sounds that are unique and unrepeatable.

The second issue of Tiptop Audio Records attests to the label’s attitude towards developing a nuanced sound set to become a standard for production.

The line-up for Tiptop Records includes MATT LANGE, ANGLE, JOAO CESER, MARKUS FIX, BLACK SHAPE, DRUMCELL & LUIS FLORES, HUBOT, FLORIAN MEINDL, JOHN TEJADA, SCANNER, M.O.T., RIEMANN; the names of a scene now described as ‘Modular Techno’, which consists of a fast growing group of artists interested in expanding their compositional techniques through modular synthesizer systems.

The vinyl format is a testimony to the label’s dedication to produce music in a physical form. The result is a four side, double LP packaged in original artwork (including a special poster) by Italian artist Matteo Giampaglia, with handmade lettering by Caterina Scardillo.

It is an invitation to a territory of oscillations, and a trip of 10 (+ 2 extra digital) tracks that reconsiders the concept of sound design applied to electronic club music."

A Little Play With ADM15 Spectre...

Published on Dec 16, 2015 Audio Damage, Inc.

"Just having a bit of fun with Spectre. It is in the lower-left-hand corner of the Euro case. In the first half of the video, I'm manually triggering it. In the second, I just mult the snare trigger. It is in Infinite Mode in this demonstration, and I switch back and forth between bin shift and pitch shift.

Kick and snare are 2 x ADM12 Neuron + ADM07 Mad Hatter, driven by ADM06 Sequencer 1. The delay I occasionally play with (directly to the right of Spectre, with the same panel config) is an alpha version of a clocked delay we are working on. Synth stuff is from WMD/SSF set."

Roland Boutique JP-08 Demo - Discovery One - By PolyEvolver

"Hi Folks, I made this track to demo the new Roland Boutique Jupiter JP-08 Synthesizer. All but the 1 Acoustic Guitar track (NI Strummed Acoustic), The Piano ( Roland FA06) and Drums (LPX Drummer), are sounds straight from eh JP-08 or That I made on it, nothing more. I felt this track required the extras like guitar and piano but what you get here is a diverse range of sounds and feel for the instrument. There's 14 tracks of Jupiter in there so plenty to pick out, enjoy."

Ostinator Phrase Looper for iPad Demo

Published on Dec 16, 2015 AskAudio Mag

iTunes:
Ostinator-looper,sampler - Living Memory Software
Thor Polysonic Synthesizer - Propellerhead Software AB

"Designed in the style of a familiar pedal box for effortless, uncomplicated, no fuss operation, Ostinator is a single track stereo phrase looper focused on hands free control during live performance. Use it to create anything from long loops to short decaying echoes. Crossfading options enable creation of seamless drones and overdubbing offers undoable "sound on sound" layering. All performance controls are available on a single screen but Ostinator’s main strength is painless remote control while it runs in the background.

FEATURES

- AudioBus and Inter-App Audio compatible.
- Supports AudioCopy, AudioShare and “Open In…”
- Audio file import & export via iTunes.
- Hands free operation using a MIDI controller.
- MIDI assignable to every performance parameter.
- Optional, adjustable crossfading for seamless loops.
- Adjustable fade out time when playback stops.
- Adjustable loop feedback for infinite looping or echoes.
- Re-trigger mode, loops can be restarted.
- Prerecorded loops can be loaded with MIDI program change.
- Up to 12 minutes of stereo recording time.
- Get up and running quickly with onscreen help.
- Built-in PDF Manual.

A NOTE FOR PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS

Loops can be loaded, triggered and recorded remotely using MIDI controls (i.e. from footpedals or a sequencer). Tempo based looping is possible by sending the appropriate trigger messages but Ostinator is focused on simple manual control for live performers and as such does not provide any slicing, timestretch or pitch changing functions.

Ostinator is tested as thoroughly as possible and we hope there are no bugs left! If you do find one please report it to us rather than writing a negative review because of it. Email support@livingmemorysoftware.com with a simple description. We hate bugs too and we're always ready to stamp them out quickly!
