Yamaha Introduces VOCALOID4 Library CYBER SONGMAN

【CYBER SONGMAN】Official Demo Fighter

Update: video added above, sent my way via Elias.

"Yamaha Corporation announced that is has begun to market 'VOCALOID4 Library CYBER SONGMAN', a new PC-based software that can create natural singing voices in authentic English pronunciation. This new software can be downloaded, beginning today, from the official VOCALOID Shop.

VOCALOID is a technology developed by Yamaha in 2003 to create artificial singing voices just by inputting words and melodies. By installing a Voice Bank, filled with sound bite parts of human voices, and the VOCALOID Editor to input the words, melodies, and singing styles desired, you can instruct the virtual singer of your choice to perform anytime and anywhere.

VOCALOID is continuing to evolve, and is presently available for creating cyber singing voices in Japanese, English, Spanish, Chinese, and Korean. Voice Bank software is available from Yamaha and other sources within and outside of Japan. Yamaha announced VOCALOID 4, the latest version, in November 2014. This version offers richer, more natural and expressive singing voices than ever before.

A very wide range of songs created with VOCALOID is available from video Internet sites such as YouTube. Especially in Japan, VOCALOID has grown and developed to become a part of the musical culture.

CYBER SONGMAN, which Yamaha is announcing today, is a new Voice Bank developed especially for users in the English-speaking world. CYBER SONGMAN offers a new level of enjoyment in creating songs using virtual singers performing in the English language. This new Voice Bank is based on recorded sound parts taken from the singing of a native speaker from the United States, and the pronunciation is clear and crisp American English that fits in well with almost any musical genre. If users also use the Growl function, it is possible to create the high levels of expressiveness needed, for example, in blues and rock songs.

CYBER SONGMAN was developed for wide global use, and it is offered for sale as a product that can be downloaded even from outside Japan. The price is JPY10,000 (before tax), and sales began today on the dedicated VOCALOID Official Shop. Besides, for VOCALOID beginners, we offer two starter kits on the VOCALOID shop. One consists of CYBER SONGMAN and VOCALOID4 Editor, the other consists of CYBER SONGMAN and VOCALOID4 Editor for Cubase. The both products are offered at discounted price.

*We are also considering offering the new Voice Bank for download on other websites operated by Yamaha.
*This product cannot be used on a stand-alone basis and must be used with VOCALOID4 Editor or VOCALOID4 Editor for Cubase andthe Cubase Series. https://net.vocaloid.com/en/products/editor"

Rossum Electro-Music Ships CONTROL FORGE Programmable Universal CV Generator

"Eurorack Module is a Supremely Flexible Modulation Source for Elaborate One-Shot Contours, Evolving Cyclical Patterns, and Sequences that Live and Breathe

(Scotts Valley, CA, October 31, 2016) -- Rossum Electro-Music today announced that their Control Forge Programmable Universal CV Generator Eurorack module is now shipping to Rossum Electro-Music dealers worldwide.

Originally previewed earlier this year, Control Forge’s core functionality is drawn from the E-mu Morpheus’s insanely powerful (but hard to program on a two-line display) Function Generators. But now expanded into a supremely flexible modulation source encompassing elaborate one-shot contours, evolving cyclical patterns and sequences of arbitrary length and complexity.

• At its most basic, Control Forge is an 8-segment function generator with variable time and target voltage level for each segment.

• Each segment’s level can be defined either absolutely or relative to the ending level of the previous segment and can optionally be quantized to the nearest 1/12 volt.

• Each segment’s level may have a user defined range of randomness of either linear or gaussian distribution.

• The time scale may be modulated under CV control or manually via the encoder during runtime.

• There are 67 different transition shapes between segments (indicated graphically on the display during selection), from linear and exponential shapes to various flavors of random, chaotic, and many more that don’t lend themselves to one-word descriptions, including the ability to pass CVs directly through to the output for individual segments.

• Also included are “DC” shapes that allow the module to be used as a sequencer with all of the module’s available programmability. When combined with Control Forge’s Preset Sequencer, sequences can be hundreds of steps long and modified in real time manually or by CVs.

• Each segment may optionally have a conditional jump that results in a jump to another selected segment (or to a completely different preset) if a particular condition is met. E.g., a CV being above or below the selected conditional value, the presence or lack of a gate or logic high at their respective inputs, rising or falling edges at the inputs, etc. So, in addition to one-shot shapes, extremely elaborate cyclical patterns can be programmed that evolve based on the various conditional inputs.

• Control Forge’s AutoChain functionality allows the creation of two very specific kinds of multi-preset patterns: A multi-preset retriggerable pattern (like a long syncable LFO), and a multi-preset “envelope-like” pattern with retriggerablity, an optional sustain section, and a “release" section that’s jumped to on gate fall.

• Two independent triggers can be programmed to fire in response to a variety of events and can be used to affect either Control Forge itself or external modules.

• 500 presets can be saved and recalled.

• A preset sequencer allows stepping through up to 200 user-defined series of presets under trigger, clock or manual control. This allows contours and sequences of almost unlimited length and complexity.

• All presets and sequences can be transferred to any number of Rossum Electro-Music Satellite modules, which can then operate as stand-alone modulation sources, completely independent of the Control Forge.

Control Forge is now available from Rossum Electro-Music dealers worldwide. Its price in the USA is $499.00.

More Control Forge information can be found at the Rossum Electro-Music web site: http://www.rossum-electro.com/products/control_forge/"

"After 25 years, I'm finally doing what I said I would never do... sell my beloved MIDI Mini. I am the original owner. This has been my secret weapon since 1996 and used on practically everything I've ever done, starting with a Peter Gabriel dance remix in 1997. These are not made anymore. The only reason I'm selling is that I have my sights set on some additional MOOG gear in 2017 and need to build up my kiddy fund.

This is a 100% Analog Mini Moog Clone in a rack. To my ears, it sounds identical in every way to the Model D. Years ago I was thinking of replacing it with the Moog Voyager. I compared them in my studio and this MIDI Mini won hands down... I sent the Voyager back. This unit has that massive sound that only 100% analog Moogs have.

Because this is a rack unit, it's perfect for touring and doesn't use any desk space in a studio.

CONDITION:

Excellent working condition. Only some aesthetic scratches on top and bottom from pulling in and out of racks over the years. (See photos)"

It was completely refurbished and recapped by Electronic innovations in the Detroit area. It comes with the original manual and I do believe it has the original sounds loaded. It also has a Calzone hard case in okay condition. If you know anything about the Memorymoog you know this a monster keyboard."

Yamaha CS-60 Synthesizer Noodling Part II - Knife Jogger Azures (Super Duper Audio Quality)

Published on Oct 31, 2016 raycastile

Part 1 here.

"Hello again! Here is another video of me improvising on my Yamaha CS-60 vintage analog synthesizer. Unlike the last one, which had risible audio recorded on an iPhone, this video has crisp, clear, beautiful audio recorded on a computer using Logic Pro X. This is the first time I've ever recorded anything using Logic Pro. I think it turned out pretty good, considering I had no idea what I was doing.

Obviously, this improvisation was inspired by Vangelis' "Blade Runner Blues." It's not a cover of that piece, just something in a similar vein. I wanted to demonstrate how a CS-60 can produce sounds usually associated with its big brother, the CS-80. It really has less to do with the synth and more to do with the way you play it.

There are no overdubs. The background tracks are looped patterns sequenced with the Alesis MMT8 (that gray box hovering to the left of my head), and arpeggiated rhythms coming from the Novation MoroderNova and Roland XP-30. The MMT8 is playing some electric piano noodling on the Yamaha Reface CP, a noodly doodly bass line on the Ensoniq ESQ-1, a vibe/string pad on the Korg M1, and a string pad on the Roland D-50. I'm playing the leads live on the CS-60.

The CS is going back to the tech soon, so I won't be able to play it for awhile. You can hear that the aftertouch is a little wonky, plus there are other issues. I edited out the most egregious hiccups. I'm looking forward to playing a fully-functional, problem-free synth! Though I suppose CS synths are never really problem free.

I hope this video satisfies people who wanted to hear a higher quality recording of the CS-60. You have almost a half hour of spacey blues noodling. So pig out!"

"Large format modular and Eurorack modular with a looping sequence from the Roland System 8.

The System 8 is sending cv and gate info to a Mutable Instruments Rings and Clouds to generate the very last 8th triplet bell sequence sound. That is doubled with the S8 patch in the modular and sent through a Modcan Dual Delay. The timing for the sequence comes from the Suit & Tie Guy Time Divider to the trigger input of the keyboard.

Everything else is clocked from a midi to dinsync signal into the Pamela's Workout divider. The 4MS Quad Clock Divider, Moon Modular Octal Clock Divider, Intellijel Plog and a Dotcom Q962 Sequential Switch are used to generate other timings.

The main bass line sequence is a Q960 in 5 step pattern, row switched through a Q962. The sounds are the Mos Lab 901 suite through a 904 filter and STG digital attenuators.

The secondary upper sequence is a pair of STG Soundlabs Voltage Mini Stores which again are row switched in a five step pattern through a Malekko switch module. The sound source is The Harvestman Piston Honda mk1 into a Music Thing Spring reverb and TipTop Z-DSP with Clocked Delays chip. AR timing is from an Intellijel Quadra+Expander to an MST Dual VCA.

Both of these sequence patterns are transposed with a dotcom Q119 sequencer. Timing for the change is from a Q173 Gate Maths.

Kick sound is a Sputnik VCS through an Oakley VC State Variable Filter and timing from a Moon Modular 562 Trigger Sequencer. Noise swashes are Sputnik WCRS through an Synthetic Sound Labs Segwencer IV into an STG mixer and on through a Jurgen Haible Tau Pipe Phaser. Additional filtering was through a dotcom Q150 and Q107.

The last sequence is from an Intellijel Metropolis to an Ian Fritz and SSL Double Deka Ultrasonic VCO. The VCO is sent through a MOTM 440 LPF and a SSL Steiner Filter (high pass) on through a dotcom EG and Behringer DD400 digital delay. It is then sent to a Strymon Blue Sky reverb in plate shimmer mode. The MOTM 440 filter is frequency modulated by a bank B output of the DDVCO through an Encore pitch shifter.

Recorded in Cubase in one pass. Video edited in Final Cut Pro. Text title made in Motion."

Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh Interview on NPR on the New Minimoog Model D

NPR posted an interview with Mark Mothersbaugh on the synths that changed pop music. Click through and hit the red play button on the top left. The Minimoog Model D gets the focus. This one in via Ali.

via NPR: "Long ago, electronic music was created on massive consoles the size of refrigerators. But in 1970, the Minimoog Model D was unleashed, and its impact was nothing short of revolutionary. It was the driving force behind new sounds that emerged in years to come — jazz-rock from Herbie Hancock, electrifying pop from Michael Jackson and futuristic music from Devo, the rock and synth pop group perhaps best known for 'Whip It.'

This year, Moog Music is reissuing the Minimoog, hand-building them almost exactly as they were over four decades ago. Mark Mothersbaugh, a composer, producer and Devo founding member, joined NPR's Rachel Martin to explain the Minimoog's significance — and his pure love for the instrument. (One of Mothersbaugh's own Minimoogs from the mid-'70s joined the interview as well; hear the full conversation at the audio link.)

The revelatory thing about the Minimoog, Mothersbaugh says, was its portability: You could fold it up and travel with it. 'In the old days, synths were like people standing around in lab coats touching knobs and dials,' he says. 'And this allowed you to move out of that environment into nightclubs.'"

Roland MC-505 Groovebox with Aira Skin For Sale

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

You might remember this one from this post.

"Here is a unique opportunity to acquire a one of a kind Roland MC-505 Groovebox.

Completely stripped down, cleaned and rebuilt, this 505 has had two replacement pots which came direct from Roland, the last ones in stock we were led to believe. The other pots have been rebuilt.
A new reproduction slider has also been fitted as the originals are now unobtainable, this has been carefully trimmed to match since the picture was taken. And finally a replacement Tact Switch.

As you can see from the pictures, the power supply has been fully re-capped using Nichicon capacitors where possible.

Also visible from the pictures you can see that the screen is unmarked with no lines etc, which can be common on these.

This 505 has a custom skin made by StyleFlip, which was designed by ourselves to give the 505 the look of a modern Aira, which really brings it up to date. This is made of a special material which makes for easy removal and re-application. If you find that you are not 100% happy with the fitment you can simply peel off carefully and re-apply to your liking.

"1979 ARP OMNI-2 Vintage Analog String Synthesizer Mostly Working Solina Moog

Looks beatup with scratches and fading. But, most features work. A previous owner even installed two working power outlets on the back. Replacement slider caps have been added to more closely match how it looked when new.

What doesn't work (or doesn't work well):
- Decay and Sustain in ADSR section. These are always at 100% regardless of there the slider is positioned.
- String Fast/Slow Release (top panel, right) seems to be at near 100% (long) if the slider is set a few millimeters to the right. There is no range.
- Single trigger illuminates but doesn't seem to do anything.

This thing is built with steel and is rugged. It weighs 42 lbs."

"*MIDI to CV-Gate Interface MCV-628 by Papareil Synth Labs. The interface lets you control notes and one selectable control (either Filter Cutoff, PWM1 or PWM2). The button is an auto learn button to learn the midi channel of the incomming midi messages. The switch is to choose if either the notes will be triggered by the keyboard or the incoming midi. The knob has 4 positions and decide which parameter will be affected by modulation message (cc1): 1-cutoff, 2-PWM1, 3-PWM2, 4-OFF. The LED is a multi purpose led which blinks 3 times at power on, after the complete init of the cpu/software. It means "All is ok". In normal working condition, the Gate led lights when a note is played or if a recognised SysEx message is received. […] When the interface is in Autolearn mode, the Gate led stay on, until a MIDI message has been received."

"Missing some fader caps but they're all still functioning. Keys all work great. The battery cover is missing as well. The speaker still functions but it's really small and doesn't really do justice when you play bass lines Through headphones or a line out this thing sounds huge despite how dinky it looks. The cutoff filter has a huge sweep on it as well. Great little vintage analog monosynth for the price. Even has knobs on the side to add a guitar strap! "Had this custom made by Studio Electronics a few years back. It's 4-voices with the Oberheim and Moog style VCFs. It's been in the 4-space ATA touring case you see pictured since purchasing it. I am the original owner and used this for studio work. I finally decided to make way for new gear so you can have it for much cheaper and sooner than if you bought it straight from SE.

The synth is in perfect working condition and just a few scratches on the rear panel from fumbling with the midi cable when plugging it in.

I had the case specially made to be just the right depth to hold a couple of cables. It's pretty much the smallest and lightest case you can mount the synth in."

Moog Musonics Sonic V

This one in via Soviet Space Child spotted on Switched On.

Note the panel graphic coloring is different compared to others.

"This Sonic V is fully functional and in decent condition, with a few scratches, and a couple missing slider, switch, and knob caps. The Sonic V was never put into full production; as such, it is designed internally like a prototype with some limits to it's integrity, and is available for Local Pickup only.

The Sonic V is a rare predecessor model to the Sonic Six, designed during Musonics' ownership of Moog. In regards to the synth architecture, the Sonic V remains very similar to the Sonic VI, but has a diode filter rather than the Moog ladder filter. It has two audio VCOs with a 3 octave range, selectable waveforms, and manual pulse width contrl over the Square wave. The LFO is really made up of 2 LFOs mixed together with selectable waveforms and individual rate control for each, as well as a Master rate control for both, crossfading mixer, and a unique Transient feature for each that has a ramp down effect on the rate. The modulation section can also be used to trigger the Envelope. Other features include Ring Modulation, White Noise source, AD & ADS envelope generator, and built in speaker. The Sonic V is a very unique design from Moog's history and really excels at effect sounds."

"For sale Akai AX-60 analog polyphonic synthesizer with Hybrid travel case + original owners manual. Excellent condition.

Bought new in 1986 in Rochester NY. This is the synth that the popular 1986 song 'Watching Trees' was recorded with. Its a very solid, well built, heavy synth (48 lbs in the case). Synth in perfect condition. The arpeggiator trigger input was improved by Bruce Forat (inventor of the Linn Drums) to accept any and all CV signal voltages you send to it! This synth will tempo lock to any control voltage signal you send to it. Also has midi for tempo, but the arpeggiator CV input is the true old school trigger that has a different feel that really tempo locks nice to drum beats, more organic and analog.

Synth kit includes:
-Akai AX-60 polyphonic analog synthesizer
-Heavy duty Hybrid Hard Shell carry case with good foam and locking hasps still in excellent condition .
-Original owners manual (signed by Trent Reznor)"

New KORG Volca Wave Wavetable Synthesizer & Volca VC-1 Vocal Processing Synthesizer?

These don't quite match the teaser for Nov 1.

Real or not?

Thoughts?

Update: some commentary regarding the Volca Wave:

Note the Volca Wave wavetable synth appears to have a vector joystick more akin to the SCI Prophet VS (Vector Synthesizer), Yamaha SY-22/TG-33, and Korg Wavestations. There is a difference between classic wavetable synthesis and vector synthesis. Wavetable synths typically have a number of single cycle waveforms in a wavetable oscillator that you can modulate through, while vector synths allow you to use a joystick to crossfade through four different waveform oscillators. The KORG Wavestation added the ability to sequence through waveforms, while the Prophet VS and Yamaha incarnations only allowed you to  crossfade between the individual oscillators, each with a single waveform loaded vs. a wavetable of multiple waveforms like on PPG and Waldorf wavetable synths.  An interesting side note is I believe the John Bowen Solaris is the only synth that blends both Vector and Wavetable synthesis. You get four oscillators with wavetables (including other waveform types), and the Vector joystick to crossfade between oscillators - meaning you can transition both within individual oscillators and between multiple oscillators.

If the Volca Wave is real, it will be interesting to see what synthesis they employ.

On a side note, some people have labeled synths like the Korg DW-8000 as employing wavetable synthesis. In this case, yes there is technically a wavetable holding the different waveforms available for each oscillator, but the behavior is more like your standard PCM or rompler based synth (or Vector synthesis minus the ability to crossfade between oscillators).  You simply select a static waveform for each oscillator.   Think of the DW-8000 as having sixteen distinct waveforms available per oscillator, while on the Waldorf Wave line of synths you instead have wavetables consisting of 256 waveforms each per oscillator. Depending on the synth, you can then set the start wave and the end wave and then use a modulation source like an envelope or LFO to sweep through them.

Halloween Drone : Red Sound Dark Star

Published on Oct 29, 2016 100 Things I Do

"An amazingly cheap and fun desktop synth. Fantastic drone machine that can play up to 8 notes or 5 dual oscillator tones at the same time.

The Dark Star has had a hard time in the synth world, with a mix of RCA jacks for outputs, an almost obtuse 'go your own way' interface for sound design and some rather basic presets it emerged and faded from the EDM / DJ scene in the early 2000's.

I hope to do a series of videos using this synth in the coming weeks. It really has some awesome sound potential and you can spend hours just tweaking away into very interesting sonic adventures. I tend to use it very much like the VCS3 and you can get some very similar / modular textures from it without too much effort. For the Average price of around $200usd at the moment your synth world might just need one

A stereo delay and some slight saturation effects and the Free TAL Chorus-LX were used in this clip.

I hope you enjoy the drone!"

The only additional modules that were used was an Expert Sleepers FH-1 for cv/gate control and some multiples. It was entirely recorded/mixed in Cubasis on the iPad, using the tape delay and non-linear reverb from Expansion Pack #1. The original recording is one of my favourites, so I've been itching for an excuse to do it again.

The video was recorded using a Lumix GX7 and an iPhone 5. Locations were Clacton and Walton in the east of England on a cold, late September day."

Trying the BassLine 303 synth for the first time here. I like it. So much nicer to deal with than Rebirth. Good MIDI implementation and simple operation and a real joy to automate with Genome and then push it around against it's will.

Using Audiobus AUFX:Dub and Space to provide effects on iPad. Dub is on Animoog and Space is on the Korg iM1 stabs.

I took some inspiration with the drone and the lead from Junkie XL and the Mad Max Fury Road score."
