Evaton Technologies Synth DIY class @ West Liberty University

Russ Hoffman, of Evaton Technologies, recently gave a Synth DIY workshop at West Liberty University. Students learned how oscillators and filters work, while constructing a reduced version of the Evaton Technologies SDIY MDRONE kit. (The kits were reduced to a single oscillator, to accommodate the constraints of building the kits in the allotted time.)

The workshop was held in conjunction with Professor of Music, Dr. Matthew Harder's Electronic Music Ensemble, at West Liberty University.

The students will be performing with their new drone synths in an electronic music ensemble concert at the university in April.

You'll find photos here.

Endangered Audio Research AD4096 + Funkbox TR-606 Drum Machine

Published on Jan 30, 2016 Bimini Road

"This is a demo of the now legendary, long-out-of-circulation Endangered Audio Research AD4096 Analog Delay, with the Funk Box TR-606 running through it. Very few videos show what the AD4096's Infinity Mode is useful for, which is crazy to me, because I feel like that's the best, most unique part of this pedal. Infinity Mode can be tuned to creep on the edge of self-oscillation in a really organic way. New signal pushes old signal out - and in that way it's almost like a looper, or even a tape bleed emulator.

Although a guitar pedal, mixing artists contact us all the time to tell us how they use the AD4096 on drum busses - especially for dub music! I think the AD4096 is killer on drums. You can get a really loose spring-reverb-like tone from short delays.

The Momentary Expand switch shorts the Depth pot and sends it into self-oscillation - the faster the clock speed (the Time knob turned to the right - "backwards" of how most pedals work), the faster it will run wildly into speaker-blasting range. However, with Infinity Mode engaged, you don't get the ever-louder-and-louder signal - it's "limited" because the new incoming signal pushes out the old. Also, if the Depth is turned all the way down, it becomes a momentary off switch.

The Delay line is a more traditional dark, fat analog delay sound, whereas the Echo line has a elevated, rarefied glittery tone. It's almost like an LPF and an HPF line. It also arrives just barely later than the Delay line. It overdrives beautifully, and thanks to its FET transistors, it has an almost tube-like breakup. The combination of these characteristics, along with the totally unique Infinity Mode, makes this the most tonally flexible and musically useful analog delay pedal ever made.

We get almost daily emails about these pedals at Endangered Audio Research. This unit is going to be donated to Oberlin College's TIMARA program when I'm done making demo videos for it, so don't bother trying to buy it from me. We are going to add more delay time with an aftermarket mod that will be available to the public, but first, I'm making a bunch of videos with different sound sources to show what the original sounds like.

EAR is also making a new, updated version of this later this year with expanded functionality, but gotta love the original unit - named one of the best 30 guitar effects in the world by Premier Guitar Magazine.

I don't deal in unprocessed, "clean" demos, because I don't believe it shows you more about the effect you're using. Nothing exists in a vacuum, especially music.

NAMM 2016 | Moog Island Of Electronicus

via Moog Music

"The Moog booth at the 2016 Winter NAMM show celebrated the first major Moog 'Happening', The Island Of Electronicus.

Conceived and organized in the early 70's by Moog marketing guru, David Van Koevering (pictured above), The Island of Electronicus was presented as a mind-expanding series of immersive electronic events held on an island off the coast of Florida. Inspired by Van Koevering's event, the Moog Island of Electronicus encouraged visitors to 'come together in an immense creative explosion of thought & feeling.'

Special thanks to Carlos and the crew at The Echo Park Cactus Store for adorning our island with a sublime collection of entrancing desert plants, and to illustrator Kyle Platts for his ingenious Mother-32 inspired drawings.

For those of you who could not make it out to this year's NAMM show, please enjoy these photos from the event."

Hordijk Runglered Filters

Published on Jan 30, 2016 Todd Barton

"What I love about the Hordijk Rungler is its ability to focus on a set of constrained semi-chaotic patterns that bring life and breath to the patch. In this patch the Rungler is going to the -24db Filter for the percussive layer and also going to the Twinpeaks Filter for the S&H timbral shifts and drone. This is a self-generating patch I’m only, first fading in the percussive layer, then fading in the Twinpeaks layer. Love how the accent/rhythm patterns change so organically. Audulus 2 Minute Tip - 15: Introduction to Flipflop Memory

Published on Jan 30, 2016 Bimini Road

Get Audulus for: iOS | Mac | Windows/Linux

"This video is a primer on Flipflop Memory - flipflops are the smallest unit of memory possible - it's either a one or a zero. Each time a flipflop is pinged by the Midi button, it reverses its state (it flipflops!).

With this setup, you can change 8 different parameters on or off with just one button and one knob.

The fundamentals laid out here are necessary for understanding how to make the *very* complex sequencers and pseudo-computers that are possible within Audulus.

The 2 Minute Tip series breaks apart topics on Audulus into bite-sized chunks. I don't talk during the tutorials (though there are a few notes that pop up), and this is so that international viewers who don't understand English well don't feel left out. Familiarize yourself with the node menu and my navigation won't be so mystifying. In the future, we'll develop a finger press indicator so you can see where I'm tapping.

Yamaha Electone E75 rare synth (voice cards of CS-80 and GX-1)

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated. Electone E 75 Bass and string sounds

Published on Feb 3, 2013 electone75

"Some bass and string sounds from the Yamaha Electone E 75. If you recognize some melody from GroBschnitt Solar Music you might be right.....
My iPhone does not manage the bass sounds correctly... The sound comes from the E 75, TM5 cabinet and also through a keyboardamplifier with an EHX Small Stone pedal."

via this auction

"This synth looks like an organ but in fact shares most of the voice cards of the Yamaha GX-1 and CS-80, which currently go for ($300,000+ and $25,000+ respectively). I have to sell this due to moving.

The Yamaha E70 is the more well known model, but the E75 adds the well-known string sounds from the CS-80. This is the only one E75 I've ever seen for sale in Australia.

The other amazing thing about this synth is the presets on all voice cards are controlled by simple resistors. To make each voice fully programmable just replace resistors with potentiometers. Here's the guide to do it.

The synth works perfectly except there is a stuck note on the foot pedals (deep bass). This can be turned off and it still played (including with bass). The stuck note is a common problem and will be a damaged diode or resistor on the bass foot pedal CV controller.

Cosmetically it's in excellent condition, with 3 blemishes shown in the pics which should be straight-forward to fix. The listing includes the foot pedals, they're just not attached at the moment (they're in the last pic)..."

Korg MiniPops Junior vintage analogue drum machine SN 740348 with Original Box

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"For sale is a wonderful vintage Korg MiniPops Junior analogue drum machine in nearly mint condition – it works perfectly, sounds absolutely awesome, and even comes in its original box! It has a punchy, warm transistor tonality with a massive hefty kick drum. There are ten onboard preset patterns, some of which are very usable indeed (the Rock, Mambo and Latin are my particular favourites); the kit pieces played in the patterns comprise Kick, Snare, Hats, and high and low percussion (kind of agogo-style).

It has a standard quarter-inch jack output so is ready to plug straight into your rig, and you could either use the patterns as-is or sample them and chop them up in your DAW (which is a great way to isolate the component kit pieces and have fun with them).

The physical condition of the machine is amazing given its age: very, very little wear is visible. The veneer is unchipped, the front fascia is bright and smooth without scratches, and the start-stop lever is intact (often these got snapped off); please take a look at the photos to see how well preserved this is for an old piece of kit. The sound too is spot on: no crackles or issues, the patterns are punchy and tight, bass extension is wonderful... it sounds great :-) I've never seen a piece of vintage kit in quite as good shape as this – definitely collector's grade."
