Roland MC-8 vs Arturia Microbrute vs Korg Monotribe

via this auction

"Vintage Roland MC-8 Micro-Composer, interface unit, and a reproduction data cable (sorry, no hard copy of the manual is included, but you can download a copy here). 8-channel digital sequencer for analog (CV / Gate) synthesizers, circa 1977. This particular MC-8 is the only one I've seen with a blue cover. Also, it's serial #600000 (both units match). I don't know how these units were numbered (my other MC-8 is serial #680904), but in theory it's possible that this could be the first one off the line. You can learn more about the MC-8 by visiting my blog.

In any event, this unit is currently in good working order, though as always with vintage electronics, you should not expect it to work perfectly up to factory spec indefinitely without ever having to troubleshoot problems. This is a delicate old computer, and frankly it's amazing that it still works at all. When I originally got it, it was missing the proprietary data cable, without which it won't work. Previously I've used it with the factory data cable that came with my other MC-8, but for this auction, I had a new data cable made for it, which cost me around $300 in parts/labor. The new cable (see last pic) actually uses better quality cabling than the original, and it was made well and fully tested. It's the same length as the original factory cable. The only thing is that you might want to find some sort of tubing to cover it with.

I used this very MC-8 to sequence an Arturia Microbrute (multitracked using the MC-8's own FSK sync signal) and a Korg Monotribe (drums, synced via programmed clock pulses generated by the MC-8) for this little demo track" [embed above]

Roland RS-505 Paraphonic Strings SN 972274

"The RS-505 is a synthesizer which has 3 sections, bass, synth and strings. This piece of beauty has rich, analog sounds which are very warm.

The Synth section has 4 waveforms, which can be chosen by the white buttons located in the center section of the unit. The Synth section has its own filter cutoff, resonance, VCA, envelope and LFO.

The Bass section has three waveforms and this also comes with its own VCA attack and release sliders. The string has two presets and this part contains the features from the previous RS-202.

The sounds from the three sections can be blended to create interesting tones. This unit also comes with Chorus and Ensemble effects which can instantly warm and thicken the sounds up. The RS 505 is known to be Rolands one of the finest string synthesizer of its era, so a must have for your studio!!!"

An Introduction to The Mellotron (1965)

Published on Apr 13, 2014 British Pathé

"The personalities Eric Robinson and David Nixon introduce us to the musical instrument the Mellotron, London.

Various shots of large country garden. L/S of swimming pool. L/S of garden with white doves on the grass. M/S of large country cottage. The narrator introduces us to the personality Eric Robinson who explains to us from his living room armchair the new instrument we are about to see which can make all the sounds of an orchestra, but can be played by one person - The Mellotron.

The camera pans as Eric walks to introduce us to his son-in-law the magician David Nixon. M/S of David Nixon seated at the Mellotron that looks very much like a piano or organ. Eric and David talk about the complexities of the machine. Then David gives a demonstration and lets rip with two fingers only to produce an awesome sound!. C/U of Nixon's hands as he twists a few knobs to add a trombone sound, and starts to play again.

M/S of Eric asking David what other rhythms the machine can play. David replies by launching into a French accordion with a Viennese waltz. C/U from inside the machinery of the Mellotron. We see the various components at work as David plays.

Finally, Eric introduces us to Geoff Unwin an expert pianist to show what the machine can really do. M/S of Geoff playing great piece of music, the Mellotron produces a variety of amazing sixties musical sounds. M/S of Geoff finishing the piece. He turns to the camera and smiles.

Note: this is one of the best! A rare Colour Pic almost completely in natural sound, and what funky natural sound it is! - SL."

I use the Korg Gadget app on my iPad for the strings, and a bleepy break i drop in later..
It's all synced by the SyncKontrol app on my old iPhone 4s - which then outputs a clock to the Volcas and keeps in sync with the iPad via Ableton Link..
It's all live on the hardware, the computer's purpose is to record the audio..

An enjoyable experience to make music in this way and not the usual staring at Ableton Live :)"

I use the Korg Gadget app on my iPad for a beat, and a patch on the Kiev the uses the old Korg M1 Universe sound.. that's gotta be one of my favorite sounds ever..
I also try to play a lead sound on the app.. it all started to remind me of Miami Vice/GTA 5/Hotline Miami music so i tried to find a sound that fitted.. it's still abit of a cheezy fun track more than anything... but i think a style i can work more on in the future :)

Everything is synced by the SyncKontrol app on my old iPhone 4s - which then outputs a clock to the Volcas and keeps in sync with the iPad via Ableton Link..

Synthesizers.com Random Sequencer Patch

Published on Feb 23, 2016 wogsalg mit

http://synthesizers.com

"Example of using a Q960 to sequence 12 predetermined pitches in random order, very slowly. Synth is going through a ping-pong delay set to 7 seconds with long delay trails, and a bit of plate reverb. i actually recorded another version that crawls along at about half this speed and i like it much better as a musical piece, but it didn't suit the purpose of this video as well.

Note that i'm only using the first 6 steps of the Q960. That's because i needed the gate outputs to trigger the envelope, and i can only combine 6 of them into a Q961 Interface and control the gate time. But i am using two rows of the Q960, switching between them with a Q128 Switch, and controlling the switch with the sample-and-hold random output; it randomly chooses A or B of the switch, and i can weight it toward A and B by using an offset in a Q125 Signal Processor (A, the middle row of the sequencer has more dissonant notes than B, the bottom row, and i step in to adjust this balance a couple of times). There's also a bum note in there at one point, but i get pretty lucky tuning it back to pitch on-the-fly."

Akai AX80 Polyphonic Synth Keyboard in Amazing Condition

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Good deal on this one considering what it is and the condition if accurate. 8 voice polyphonic analogue synth with it's own unique character.

"This unit is in perfect functional and excellent cosmetic condition looking nearly new. Every key, switch, knob, and wheel work, with no defects. There are a few small nicks on the end caps which I tried to capture in the photos, but they are so small as to be barely noticeable.

This keyboard is quite possibly in the best condition you will ever see, here or elsewhere.

If you are a musician, you may be very familiar with this keyboard, but just in case, here are just some of the features:

61 key velocity touch sensitive, 8-voice polyphonic voltage-controlled analog synth. Has 64 editable memory locations for sounds ("patches") in two banks of 32, plus a factory preset bank of another 32 patches. MIDI in, out, and thru. Front panel display is made with blue fluorescent displays, detaining all the voice settings, including oscillators, waveforms, modulation, sync, envelope generators, filters, and frequency. Playing controls include volume, tuning, voice control, pitch bend wheel, modulation wheel, key transpose, and note hold (sustain)."

Siel DK600 Vintage Analog Synthesizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This synth is fully functional, and with regard to appearance - I would give it a 9.5 score out of 10.0. The previous owner took exceptional care of this instrument, and the only noticeable wear is a small, round paint chip on the back panel.

The Siel DK-600 was made in Italy in the mid 1980’s. It is a classic and even a “sleeper classic” in my opinion. A google search will turn up all of the details including the detailed description from vintagesynth dot com which states… ”The DK-600 is Siel's unique Italian take on the mid-eighties programmable polysynth with MIDI implementation (badged as the Opera-6 in the UK). Just like the Juno-106 and Poly-61 of the time, the Siel was a 6-voice synthesizer with straight forward programming, simple effects and digitally controlled analog oscillators (DCO's). However, the Siel, having dual oscillators per voice sounds thicker than the Juno or Matrix because it's got 12 oscillators! And because they're DCO's, you know they'll always remain stable and in-tune even though they are analog in nature. The DK600 has many other nice features such as complete MIDI implementation. There are 3 LFO's for extreme modulation. Both the filter and amplifier have standard ADSR envelope sections. And like similar synths, all the sliders and buttons are intuitively placed on the front panel for hands-on real-time programming."

Stripped White KORG EMX-1

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

It appears to be painted white rather than stripped. Some custom knobs as well. Such an odd look for it.  Like something on an industrial factory floor.  The proportions look all out of whack.

It does need some work. From the description:

"Only the Left output has sound. The 1/4 jacks for R, 3, and 4 need replaced. That being said I used the device by just going mono into my mixer. Still sounded good enough for shows since I didn't use panning.

Other than the jacks needing replaced this device appears to function perfectly. It has a custom paint job. You can buy a cover to fix this. I have programmed the synth without finding any other issues. Like I said, pan will not work til the jacks are fixed. This device CAN be used mono. The EMX produces really nice beats and has an amazing synth engine that can do 5 parts. This item is being sold AS-IS, for parts or fix, no refunds. If I had more time I would replace the jacks myself and price higher. Please ask questions before buying. No International shipping. Contiguous USA only.

Korg Minilogue 4 voice analog poly synth unboxing quick jam, demo first impressions synthesizer

Published on Jan 21, 2016 Expanding Sound

"Think of this like you're at the music store, trying out the piece. We took it home, took it out of the box, whipped up a basic beat on ableton with their drum rack, and made a quick, two melody jam with it. Just to try out some of the sounds. The drum part was supplied by ableton, the synth was just straight from the unit. If you like how it sounds, go try it out in the store! My impressions were i loved how light and small it is, and it has a big sound. would have prefered two outputs since there is a built in delay, through the headphone jack I didnt notice much panning, but like I said, this was done after owning the unit for 5 minutes, basically just showcasing how fast you can make music and some cool sounds with it. Hope you enjoy!"

TEMPI PWM Patch

TEMPI PWM Patch from Peter Speer on Vimeo.

"Using the Make Noise TEMPI's Run/Stop behavior as a hack for integrating pulse width modulation into a module which otherwise does not include it.

The patch is described in detail in the video, but the tl;dr versions is: two channels run at the same tempo division, with one controlling the Run/Stop behavior of the other (via the Mod input). Adjusting the phase of the modulator effectively modulates the pulse width of the second channel.
