FieldScaper 1.4 Released | Glitched Ambient Demo with FieldScaper In Looper Mode

Published on Mar 21, 2016 Igor Vasiliev

"More about how to create this effect - http://motion-soundscape.blogspot.com... [also captured below] FieldScaper - Sound warp field recorder and scape constructor for iPad and iPhone."

iTunes: FieldScaper - Sound warp field recorder and scape constructor - iMusicAlbum or Bundled

What's New in Version 1.4
● New user interface of the Looper mode specially designed for real-time controls.
● Four different modes of processing audio from external sources (include IAA and AB).
● Assignable buttons for quick select presets in the Looper mode.
● Assignable buttons for quick select samples for oscillators.
● New square waveform added for LFOs.
● Option for random modulation of all waveforms in LFO.
● The main effect value can be inverted for different parameters.
● New controls for High and Low cutoff filters on the input.
● Stop recording time when input signal below threshold.
● Several new sound mangling presets.
● Updated description of the application.
● Description in single PDF available on application site.
● Fixed bug in editing MP3 files.
● Several minor bugs have been fixed.

"How to make something like this demo.

In the "Overdub" mode the input signal will start recording to loop when the signal above threshold and stop when below, but playback of this loop not stops and already recorded signal not erased. So as you can continuously update the loop content. It can be very creatively when you use presets that changing the pitch, direction and addressing (see Oscillator - Address section) when playback.

To achieve the result like in this demo you need switch to the "Looper" mode (button "Looper" on the main screen) and select the processing mode "Overdub". Then assign one of preset buttons to factory default preset "Dark and foreboding places" and set this preset active. Move the fader "Effect" to about the half right.

In the input settings panel (button "Input" or "Audio input control") set the "Stop recording threshold" to about -15 db and "Stop recording time" to about 0.100 sec. It is desirable to reduce the tail with low volume level when the input signal drops and record stops and to avoid the large silence gap in the loop.

Also it is recommended to increase "Input amplify" up to about +10 db so that the level of input signal will be at least from -15 db and more even with a small limiting. Many presets give the best result when the input signal is loud enough.

When the input source is synth or other musical instrument or app set the input channel filter at least from "40 Hz" to "12 kHz" ("16 kHz") when record from microphone the best use "60 Hz" filter to avoid unnecessary peaks that can affect to the signal threshold detector and gate.

After that tap the button "Start" (in the "Looper" mode) to start processing your input signal.

Move the fader "Effect" to get other sound. You can change any other parameters of this preset to achieve another effect and then create your own preset. Start from "Filter - Frequency / Resonance" and its LFO and also try to change "Oscillator - Clock / Clock offset".

"This is a working unit and all knobs and keys operate. The control panels still have the original factory protective plastic covering. The unit has normal cosmetic wear and scratches on the cabinet sides, but can be refinished easily. The metal rear flap for the control panel tilt has a brushed/cleaned area. This was necessary to remove the social security number of the original owner, (remember back in the day you marked your valuables with your SS#). The oscillators sound good, but the bus bar and some knob controls will need cleaning. Some keys will also need to be adjusted. I'm not the expert on Moog restoration, but I believe a person familiar with the brand won't have any problems bringing this unit back to 100 percent.

Included with this auction is a Sound Chart by Tom Rhea to get you started..."

Moog Music Pays Tribute to Keith Emerson

Moog Music sent the following out to subscribers of their newsletter. I thought I'd share it with those that aren't subscribed, as well as capturing it in the archives. Keith was legendary.

"Thank you, Keith Emerson

'In general, everything we've ever done has always been in collaboration with musicians... there's constant experimentation. Keith Emerson was the first guy that really, in a professional way, took a large modular system on stage and made it work.' - Bob Moog

The sudden loss of Keith Emerson, a beloved member of the Moog Family, has profoundly impacted us. We were shocked and saddened to lose our hero, friend and collaborator so soon.
Keith discovered the Moog synthesizer with his band The Nice in 1969. Shortly thereafter, he reached out to Bob Moog and acquired one of the first Moog modular synthesizers, which was built for the Museum Of Modern Art's "Jazz In The Garden" public performance. From then on, the names Emerson and Moog were entwined forever. Keith became the most-visible proponent of the synthesizer revolution, using the Moog loyally onstage for almost every show of his career. Emerson became the brightest name in the world of progressive rock music, his influence and creativity rivaled only by Jimi Hendrix. He was a masterful musician in many styles, but also a renowned showman who understood that elaborate theatrics would elevate the experience of the audience to a fever pitch. Part of his "show" was to faithfully include the monstrous wall of modules and cables that his Moog had become over the years, as it had developed an instantly recognizable sound that no other instrument could duplicate.

In 2015, nearly 45 years after the beginning, Moog and Emerson worked to create newly-built exact duplicates of Keith's legendary modular instrument. Matching his original Moog to painstaking details, the new EMMS (Emerson Moog Modular System) was the first artist signature-series Moog synthesizer. It was an honor to recognize the great contribution Keith Emerson has made to the long Moog history, and to his enormous influence felt still today on the world of synthesis.

Through his enduring friendship with Bob Moog, his pioneering use of the Moog Modular and his lifetime of creative collaborations with Moog Music, Keith's fingerprints are on the very DNA of electronic synthesized sound. We can say for certain, that our company would not be where it is today without Keith's prophetic contributions. Our hearts are broken knowing our journey together has come to a close.

Thank you, Keith. Your spirit will live on forever in those electric moments when technical brilliance and unconstrained expression collide."

The TMS Modular Synthesizer System

This one popped up on a Swiss auction site ricardo.ch.

Apparently this was a one off system built by a Mr. Thoma, one of the pioneers in the Swiss experimental-electronical scene around Zurich in the late 70s / early 80s. You can find his site here: www.sounddesign.ch. TMS stands for Thoma Music System. It is listed on his equipment page here. The TMS is a Serge Modular clone he built for himself, however he did build some on request. He also has a Serge Modular. You can see it in a video further below. Unfortunately there isn't a video for the TMS on his YouTube channel.

This is one of those fascinating bits of synth history that hasn't been featured on the site before now. You never know what will come up.

Distribuited by Wordandsound

The videoclip for the song "Doom Room" by the duo Black Shape comes from a collaboration between painter Matteo Giampaglia and graphic designer Piero Fragola. It is a work completely hand-drawn and animated digitally.

The dexterity and the dirty mark of the real drawing rise on the rhythms and the notes of the track.

The subject is a lysergic journey: the protagonist is a fictional character, whose traits are not defined (is he a human? or a little alien?). At the end of his travel he will find himself, ironically. His nightmares set, in the darkness of reason and civilization, a feature of neglect and global pollution. The deformed imagery of the drawings deals with those elements that apparently seem to be negative, such as the monsters, that instead have the positive function of cleaning the environment.

Hallucination and cuteness in a black and white frenzy.

Casio VZ10m - Some Factory Presets

Published on Mar 21, 2016 SynthDan1

"Here are some factory presets played on the Casio VZ-10m phase distortion synthesizer.

From Virtual Synth Explorer: 'The VZ-1 takes a hybrid approach to its sound generation. Where the CZ line used Phase Distortion Synthesis and the Yamaha DX line used Phase Modulation (incorrectly advertised as FM), the VZ-1 uses Phase Distortion for ring modulation and waveform generation but true Frequency Modulation Synthesis to generate harmonics. The end result is a unique and hauntingly space-age sounding synthesizer with many smooth "twangy" textures - but it can also be very harsh and noisy when complex phasing is employed. Thumping bass-lines and sweeping pads are its strongest points but it is also very capable of analog-ish brass and strings.'"

VOLTLIFE: Glitch experiment 1

Published on Mar 21, 2016 voltlife

"A quick patch exploring some intentionally glitchy effects with Tyme Sefari II.

A Verbos Harmonic Oscillator provides the background drone through Erbe Verb and Clouds. Three individual outs from the Harmonic Oscillator then go through a modulated crossfader into Optomix, which is struck by random gates, creating plucks at three different but harmonically related pitches.

These plucks then go into Tyme Sefari, which is set up as a short looping delay with feedback. The loop end is modulated by Maths, causing glitchy jumps through the buffer.

I also use two gates, derived from clock divisions of the random gate source, to create further variation. One reverses the buffer direction, and the other switches on a pitch shift via the A Sound of Thunder expander. With feedback, this creates a low-fi version of the classic shimmer effect."
