Realiti - Inside the Music of Grimes - Exhibit Coming to Moogfest

The Microsoft Powered Installation Realiti - Inside the Music of Grimes Coming to Moogfest

Uploaded on May 6, 2016 Microsoft

"At this year’s Moogfest, we will create an environment and experience that celebrates music as well as the community by offering fans a unique chance to remix the track ‘Realiti’ by festival headliner Grimes. A new way to experience music, the installation will invite visitors to manipulate their surroundings as they explore an ever-evolving world. Both the visuals and the music respond intuitively to audience movements and interactions."

And the official press release from Moogfest:

"Durham, NC (May 10, 2016) – Opening May 19, Realiti - Inside the Music of Grimes is an interactive installation, powered by Microsoft Kinect technology, that allows participants a chance to go inside the music of Canadian electronic musician and producer Claire Boucher (a.k.a. Grimes). The installation will run from May 19-22 at Moogfest, an annual music, art and technology festival inspired by the late inventor of the Moog synthesizer, Robert Moog.

Grimes is one of the artists headlining Moogfest, a destination for artists, musicians, futurist thinkers, inventors, designers, and entrepreneurs.

The immersive installation will feature the track Realiti from Grimes’ fourth album Art Angels. Microsoft’s Kinect motion sensing technology will allow festival goers and fans to manipulate the music as they physically interact with the environment. As the audience moves through the installation, they will be surrounded by unique sounds and visuals, blurring the line between creator and audience.

Amy Sorokas, Director of Brand Partnerships at Microsoft Brand Studios stated 'Moogfest is a destination for innovative creators to share new ideas, so it felt natural to bring Realiti - Inside the Music of Grimes to the festival. With this installation we're exploring the unexpected ways that technology can enhance the music experience and are hoping to inspire the community with their future endeavours.'

The installation’s system, which is a part of Microsoft’s ongoing R&D music program, serves as a tribute to pioneers in music technology and experimentation, featuring the music of forward-thinking artists. The first project to use the system was DELQA, an installation at the New Museum in New York City that invited the audience to participate in a collaborative experience by going inside the music of critically acclaimed artist and producer Matthew Dear.

Realiti - Inside the Music of Grimes will be the latest artist collaboration featured as part of the Music x Technology program. Curated by Microsoft, Music x Technology is an initiative that celebrates forward-thinking artists who are using Microsoft technology to transform the way we create and experience music. With monthly artist collaborations, the program seeks to empower artists with unique opportunities to create one-of-a-kind experiences for their fans.

To view the full schedule visit: https://moogfest.sched.org/

Tickets for Moogfest 2016 are available for $249 (Festival Pass) and $499 (VIP Pass) at www.moogfest.com.

A limited number of Single Day Passes will go on sale Friday, April 15 starting at 12pm EST
Passes for Thursday, Friday or Saturday are $129
Passes for Sunday are $69"

I so wish I could go this year. I'm absolutely loving Grimes latest album. She is all over the place.

Tangerine Dream Documentary Seeks Funding on Kickstarter

Some obligatory synth spotting with their vintage Moog modulars in the video above. Hopefully the documentary will spend some time on the gear that helped them shape their music.

via Kickstarter:

"They shaped the world of music like few others did. The first feature-length documentary about Tangerine Dream.

About this project

They used synthesizers in a time when it was just a small side issue. They incorporated sounds from outer space and heartbeats in their revolutionary and unconventional sound and enriched countless classic movies with their unique soundtrack: They are TANGERINE DREAM!

We want to explore the world of Tangerine Dream for the first time in a feature-length documentary. This band became famous as one of the pioneers of electronic and experimental music worldwide. They had the desire to achieve the ultimate sound.

Our goal is to uncover the band's musical evolution, their style and their philosophy behind their art. For this reason we will depict the musical heritage of this revolutionary band and its visionary founder Edgar Froese. Furthermore we will show previously unpublished footage from Edgar's private archive.

The impressive story of ,,Tangerine Dream‘‘ will be reconstructed through several interviews with Edgar Froese’s wife Biance Froese-Acquaye, band members, close friends, befriended artists and famous collaborators.

It’s a homage to the great musician Edgar Froese and the early era of electronic music. And last but not least, it's a piece we owe them!

WHY NOW?

We were currently working on a short documentary about the German band Tangerine Dream.

During the production of this movie, founding member, Edgar Froese sadly passed away. Because of his unexpected death our perspective on Tangerine Dream did change decisively. From that moment on we didn't just want to cherish the band's career, we also wanted to portray Froese’s lifework and keep the bands and its founders legacy. In order to meet our new goals properly, we have to change from a short to a feature-length-documentary."

JV-1080 Noodling - "Don Solaris"

Published on May 10, 2016 bitleyTM

"Playing with an EPS 16+ sequencer pattern controlling 8 midi tracks in a JV-1080 using the new and pretty nifty Don Solaris soundset - link below - as well as a simple drumkit from the Roland Dance expansion JV card simply changing 'patterns' by transposing the part (regular part, not a drum part but there are kits also among the instrument patches on that card). Patches tried out here are for instance SH101 Lead, JV80 D.Bass, 24 db Bass, TransistBass, AcidLine, Prophet VS, ESQ1 sweeps, etc. The EPS / ASR sequencer is very easy to use and kind of cool. 'Create instrument' on the EPS and set midi channel, repeat until all 8 slots are loaded. Can also play sampler presets together with midi if you create layers, for instance.

Don Solaris 1080 soundset (also 2080, XP30/50/60 etc)

For those of you new into this the 1080 and the EPS 16+ were two of the most popular synth instruments in the mid 90's... that's how old they are; they cost peanuts today but still deliver! Great bargains!"

Teenage Engineering OP-1: MY FIRST TAPE by RemixSample

Published on May 10, 2016 RemixSample RemixSample

"Quick unboxing of Teenage Engineering OP-1 and playthrough demo of my first tape.

Learning how to use the OP-1 is not something you master after a couple of days. I thought it sounded like garbage the first couple of hours because I didn't understand how to use the mixer and the effects, thankfully I stayed patient and I'm slowly coming around to loving the OP-1. I don't love that it's mono though. I could always fake stereo but that's not the same. Maybe a future update will address that? *praise odin*

It's also weird to go from a DAW where everything syncs and snaps in place and you never have to worry about keeping time and staying on beat. There are plenty of sequencing tools that you can use to make a proper 4x4 track though so future tapes will sound better I'm sure."

Gary Numan Receives the 2016 Moog Innovation Award

via Moog Music

"Moog Music is proud to announce that Gary Numan has has been selected to recieve the Moog Innovation Award at Moogfest 2016. Numan joins past honorees Devo, Brian Eno and Thomas Dolby.

One of the original pioneers of popular electronic music, Gary Numan’s enduring pursuit of new sounds has led to a career spanning over 35 years, with over 50 releases, 23 Top-40 singles and 13 Top-40 records. Numan's first three solo albums, Replicas (1979), The Pleasure Principle (1979) and Telekon (1980), make up his post-pop “Machine Trilogy”, and are the prototype for modern industrial music. Replacing guitars with heavily effected synthesizers, Numan’s early work is almost single handedly responsible for introducing post-punk electronica into the popular consciousness, while propelling synth music beyond Prog Rock to inspire the wave of 80s synth pop that soon followed.

His impact on the three generations of music since can’t be understated. Numan was massively influential on industrial rock icon Trent Reznor, the phased and metallic minimalism of Radiohead, and the dystopian production of hip hop genius, the GZA. Gary Numan is a manifestation of electronic culture’s progressive nature to explore the limits of traditional sound and develop new mechanisms for expression. We are honored to name him the recipient of the 2016 Moog Innovation Award.

Gary Numan will be joining us at Moogfest 2016 to receive his Innovation Award and perform a 3-night residency of the 'Machine Trilogy'. Tickets available here."

And via Gary Numan on @numanofficial: "I've just read that I'm being given the 2016 Moog Award for Innovation. I can't tell you how proud I am. I started this journey with a Moog."

How cool is that. Congrats to Gary Numan!

Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe (Lichens) Uses MIDI Sprout

Published on May 8, 2016 MIDI Sprout

"Excerpt of an interview and performance with Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe from his residency at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, California"

"DATA GARDEN RELEASES 60 MIDI Sprouts FOR SALE ON MAY 22nd AT NOON EST

The arts collective Data Garden is announcing another sale of their highly anticipated MIDI Sprout device that allows people to generate electronic music from their houseplants. Two years after their successful Kickstarter campaign, the collective is making 60 of these rare devices available for purchase to the general public on May 22nd at Noon EST.

'We’ve received a steady flow of interest from people who missed our Kickstarter and want to buy a MIDI Sprout,' says Joe Patitucci, artist and founder of Data Garden. 'While we are open to partnering with hardware manufacturers to make more, we currently have no plans to do so. With only 60 units available and more than 900 people on our waiting list, this is an important time to act in order to buy one as soon as the sale goes live.'

Interested people can go to www.MIDISprout.com to signup for email updates as the sale approaches. The collective will launch an internet pop-up shop at the end of the month during Moogfest in North Carolina, where they will be leading plant music meditation and composition workshops.

'This is a really exciting time for us,' muses Jon Shapiro, Data Garden performer and practitioner. 'I’ve met such wonderful people performing and doing installations with MIDI Sprout over the past two years. We would connect deeply on how this device can change people’s personal and artistic lives. I always felt a twinge of remorse when they would ask how to buy one and I didn’t have a concrete answer. Though the amount we can offer is disproportionate to the large demand, this is a wonderful step forward.'

The musical collaborations that Shapiro is referring to have included musicians like Laraaji, Greg Fox, Lichens, King Britt and Bryce Hackford. Meanwhile, Patitucci continues to exhibit his sound sculptures while leading group meditations and furthering his listening practice under guidance from Pauline Oliveros. Sam Cusumano, the engineering mind behind the MIDI Sprout is working on an upcoming collaboration with John Zorn.

About Data Garden
Data Garden creates experiences through music and technology. We seek to connect people and nature in new ways.

Begun as a record label releasing downloadable album codes printed on plantable seed paper, Data Garden has become a worldwide public art project building community and connection to living plants through art."

Update via Samuel Cusumano in the comments: "Get detailed information about the MIDI Sprout, code, schematics, board designs, and instruction at support.midisprout.com! I'm always happy to discuss the technology. Understand how your tools work!"
