New Details on the One Off Digital Hohner Bass 3

Remember the odd Hohner Bass 3 with Digi Bass control section posted here? Well, Kenny Balys of beatkamp won the auction for £279 or roughly $403. He still does not know the specific history of the synth, so if you know feel free to leave a comment below. He did, however, discover the following:

"The advert said:

'It is fully working with a nice and unique sound.'

This was far from an exageration.

I have a few answers now as to what is going on with this thing....

First off, in playing it the sound is exactly in line with 80s industrial type synth pop; that was a surprise.

The controls feature multiple patches that a "proper" Hohner Bass 3 do not have. (see Ebay photos)

So the answer to the question of what is up this thing is this:

- it is a custom 1 off
- the patch select board is very professionally done
- all the original Hohner 3 sound guts are gone
- there is now another board in there based on the Yamaha YM2203 FM chip!!! Its now an FM bass

Whoever did this made incredible patches, it sounds amazing. I will make plenty of use of this crazy synth.

I cannot tell if its an official Hohner prototype or the product of a Juergen Haible type of persona but it is very well done.

Will post back links later tonight on where you can grab photos (and they will be public domain.

This Bass 3 is no longer an analogue synth but as a "former analogue" I hope that its not too OT here on AH.

Should I be upset that I paid good money for a gutted out Bass 3? Probably but I am really quite pleased with this instrument as it sounds how I want with this amazing Hohner key response."

Nord Piano 3 Stage Piano Demo by Kraft Music

Published on May 11, 2016 Kraft Music

More piano than synth in this demo as expected, however it is a look at what else Clavia/Nord Keyboards is working on, and Kraft Music is an appreciated sponsor of the site. Some strings blended in throughout and then by themselves at 12:44. It is interesting how much went into the Nord Stage and how much control you actually have vs. standard preset electronic pianos.

Roland JP-8000 Organs + patching session

Published on May 11, 2016 synth-love

"My re-discovery of the Roland JP-8000 continues.

This time I create some organ patches. Yes, organs. A sound I despised in my youth now newly appreciated made on the most un-organ of synths - the JP-8000 famous for its massive supersaw leads and pads.

Organs aren't particularly hard to program but I still find them satisfying.

All sounds direct from JP-8000 to recorder. Ignore the Kaoss pad in the background, it is not in use."

Live Korg Volca Jam 38 : Korg Volca, PO-12, Arturia Microbrute and MicroKorg.

Published on May 11, 2016 Todd Smith

"All the boys are in the same room with a new friend , the Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator ‑ Rhythm (PO‑12) !! I took out the Volca Beats and replaced it with the PO-12 for this jam. I was busy learning the PO-12 so I left the Roland Boutique out of this jam.The Korg Volca Keys, Teenage Engineering PO-12 and Arturia Microbrute are all on sequencer duty. The Arturia Microbrute supplies the low end bass. The Korg Volca Keys handles the lead synth, while the Teenage Engineering PO-12 takes a test ride as drums, I switched between 3 patterns and practiced using chain mode live. The Microkorg and Korg Volca Bass are linked by midi and both are played live from the Microkorg. My main goal with this jam was to see how the Teenage Engineering PO-12 would fit into my setup. Ableton live was used as a multi tack recorder and added VST effects. Waves Supertap6 supplied the delay."

Call to Help the SynthFreq & MsMotif-6s

Published on Dec 18, 2015 TheSynthFreq

This one is in via Greg Cole with the approval of Crystal Morales aka MsMotif-6s. Many of you will be familiar with the SynthFreq and MsMotif-6s work over the years. If you are in a situation where you can help, please do.

"Many of you know Danielle Morales, also known as SynthFreq on Youtube. Danielle and her sister Crystal have been making fantastic synth videos and great tunes for years now, check out their work here if you haven't already 'Filtered Maze' by TSF.

They both have quite serious ongoing health problems and have been going through some very hard and frightening times lately with these and also accomodation issues and the potential need to sell off their beloved synths to try and keep their apartment. They are struggling to resolve this themselves as Danielle has had to be rushed to hospital a number of times recently.

I'm hoping people would be willing to donate a small amount to help out and make sure the synth freqs get to keep the gear which makes them so happy and a roof over their heads. Danielle also creates fantastic art, some of which is synth-related so alternatively you could help out by purchasing some of her work.

You can make a donation to her paypal address which is: Danielledell123@yahoo.com [or Crystal's here: crystalumbro@yahoo.com]

Any amount would be helpful, I'm sure. I'm hoping the community can get behind this and make sure these girls can keep their gear and keep making awesome synth videos. I'm sure we all understand what a difference creating music can make to our lives when times are tough.

On behalf of Danielle and Crystal, thankyou for your help."

Modular Minutes: Pentatonic Rubicon Octones by Tempi & Batumi

"Modular Minutes: Pentatonic Rubicon Octones by Tempi & Batumi

A poetic sequence with an Intellijel designs - Rubicon, a Pentatonic Qu-bit Electronix - Octone, a Make Noise - Tempi & XAOC Devices - Batumi

In this episode of Modular Minutes we are back with a unique combination of modules: The sound source is the Rubicon of which 4 different wavesforms are faded after one another with great amplification thanks to the exclusive de-emphasis circuitry of the Erica Synths Black Quad VCA. The timing of the waveform fades are controlled in a twisted way by the Make Noise Tempi, which modulates a slaved Batumi next to it. The tones are created by the Octone which is also clocked by the Make Noise Tempi. The higher notes are, the longer the reverb time and the Dry/Wet amount on the Black Hole DSP by Erica Synths, which sits at the end of the signal chain. Further modulation is added to the MMG to which the VCA's sum output is patched into. More details and nice features are in the comments section!"

"The model 102 is keyboard less version of the System 100 model 101 synthesizer. The model 102 creates very rich and easy to control analog sounds. These units can be added to make the sound fatter and richer. The model 102 is identical to the model 101, but the Portamento/ Glide function is replaced by Sample and Hold feature of the LFO, Ring Modulator, Noise Generator and A-440 tuning osc.

This unit is an excellent way to add more osc, synth effects to another synthesizer and off course it is the perfect match with a System 100 model 101!!!"

I had to get pretty creative to make the clap sound but I got there. It was a good learning experience. =)
