Elements and Rings

"Two improvisations on the Akai Timbre Wolf, a somewhat infamous piece of closeout gear which marries a oddly powerful sequencer to 4 distinctly limited voices of drifting polyphony. These performances reflect my attempt to create something of interest within the constraints of this instrument's raw capacities. Recorded live; no overdubs; some delay, reverb and EQ applied during the mastering process. Recorded Friday July 22 and Saturday July 23, 2016. Official high temperature in Dallas, TX both days: 100º F.

released July 24, 2016"

This one sent in via an anonymous reader who had the following to say:

"Thought you may be interested. First recording of any substance I've encountered that uses the Akai Timbre Wolf (blech!) exclusively. Very Terry Riley-esque."

Korg Monotribe and KR-55 demo by Jordan Passmore

Published on Jul 26, 2016 Jordan Passmore

"This demo is of the Korg Monotribe analog synthesizer and Korg KR-55 analog drum machine. The Montribe's sequencer is clocked via the trigger out on the KR-55 (you have to change the polarity on the sync-in with the tribe to pull rather than push voltage for each trigger). Both signals are mixed on a Roland M-16E mixer with no EQ but the Monotribe being effected slightly with analog delay (Boss DM-2w). The stereo signal was then recorded onto my computer via the Roland Super UA audio interface.

You may notice some noise with the Monotribe; that is an issue I am currently looking into."

Expanding on a previous idea with the Make Noise 0-Coast

Published on Jul 26, 2016 Genshi Media Group

"I just wanted to work out some things from a previous idea before I destroy this patch (I've got an upcoming ambient performance which will require a completely different, more mellow patching, than this current one.) Patch notes below:

• Make Noise Tempi into Sputnik Selector into Noise Engineering Basimilus Iteritas into the External/Balance IN of the Make Noise 0-Coast.

• 0-Coast using a rather complex patch, with the Slope in Cycle mode, into the Dynamics Input, and the Random Output into the Slope's Time Input (which is what creates the alternating fast/slow dynamics.)

• Mutable Instruments Braids into Warps, into Expert Sleepers Disting MK 3, then into Clouds via the Synthrotek 4 Channel Mixer (which also has the 0-Coast going into Clouds.)

• Mutable Instruments Rings going direct out into a cheap external mixer, then all recorded in stereo into Ableton Live with no additional effects, dubbing or other processing.

• 0-Coast, Braids and Rings sequenced with the Intellijel Designs Metropolis."

"For sale here is a Jomox Xbase 888 analog drum machine. These are getting rare and are discontinued from Jomox. Grab it now before these become legendary status and prices go up. This one is fully functional and in mint condition, includes original manual, power supply and even original box. It's an amazing sounding drum machine, deep deep bass, snappy snare and smooth hi hats. Lots of great programming capabilities. IMHO sounds better than the Xbase 999 and is a great way to get classic TR808 style sounds and programming but with much more range of sound and program flexibility."

LEM INSTA-STRINGS | STRING MACHINE 1975 | HD DEMO

Demo of the LEM (Galanti Group) Insta-Strings. Played with Korg SDD-3000 for delay effects and Electro-Harmonix Small Stone Phase Shifter.

The LEM Insta-Strings is a simple string machine from Italy. I did not search for it, I found it incidentally, I never heard of it before! It seems to be very rare. It has a cheesy string sound, but it surely has character - I love its sound. It has 4 free combinable presets: TUBA, TRUMPET and VIOLIN. Controls for ATTACK, DECAY, VOLUME and BALANCE. The latter is for the volume balance between left and right half of the keyboard (some kind of volume split). Tune knob."

Arturia Microbrute - SECRET FILTER?????? idk

Published on Jun 26, 2016 Alfie Eastwick

"so for the ppl who cba watching the whole video if you push the switch halfway between LP and BP then you get a weird filter that sounds a bit low passy but less resonant and more vowel-like, ie it absolutely sounds like a guy going owowowow anyway yeah have fun"

via someone in the comments on YouTube:

"You are just routing the sound to both the LP and BP circuits. But somehow it sounds as if the Cutoff at the BP is offset relatively to that on the LP: thus the comb-filter type of sound... perhaps the HP and the BP have their relative cutoffs at the same value. Nevertheless, this is a very neat thing, and shouldn't be too difficult to mod the Brute so that this function can be accessed without strain on the switch."

"Really amazing digital modular synth. Can be configured to emulate just about any synth, FM, additive, virtual analogue and many kinds of digital dap processes. It has sequencers and arpeggiators, and customisable delay and reverb effects. Very well supported at the electro-music.com forum, they have thousands of patches. It can be coaxed into sampling and do granular synthesis using some of the patches on there."

"For sale is a rare vintage Roland SVC-350 vocoder. It's fully functional and in excellent condition. A few minor scruffs but one of the nicer ones I've seen in a while. It has all the white slider caps, runs at 110v USA voltage and includes the rare footswitch. The SVC350 is similar to vocoder section in the VP330, but in a smaller rack form. Yet unlike the VP330, the SVC350 has graphic EQ section that allows you to shape the tone with more control than a VP330 does. This is a classic sounding vocoder, really awesome with vocals and synthesizers but especially cool when paired with drum machines, guitars and effects."

Electro Harmonix Mini Synthesizer for iPad

Published on Jul 25, 2016 pantsofdeath

Mini Synthesizer for iPhone - Electro-Harmonix
iPad version: Mini Synthesizer - Electro-Harmonix

"From synthmuseum.com: It also has a single VCO with only one waveform -pulse- and an octave divider (dividers almost always produce square waves, as is the case here). The pulse wave has a dedicated LFO for PWM, controlled by the Phasing switch and the Phase Rate slider. (PWM is electronically easy to do and many manufacturers pretend that their PWM circuit is really a phase shifter). This is run through a filter that can be made to be a real phase shifter! The envelope controls on this filter are deceptively simple: you set the frequency at key down and the frequency at key up and the amount of time it takes to change from one to the other as a key is pressed/released.

The filter has a resonance (Q) switch and a 2x switch that raises one (but not both) of the frequencies being emphasized by an octave or so. The result sounds like (and probably is, although I don't have a schematic) a real phase shifter. Finally, there is a VCA and an effects processor. The effects processor is an analog delay line, with the usual echo controls, and I believe it is only available on the later units. Early ones don't have either the delay line or the strip above the keyboard that works like a ribbon to produce performer-controlled glide.

Between the bizarre filter and the fact that it likes to play notes below middle C - way below - I think this makes an excellent bass machine for serious analog junkies, although the lack of ability to do a percussion envelope will probably rule it out for Techno use."
