Meeblip'n Trip'n #1

Be sure to enable CC on the bottom right of the player for notes!

"I finally got all the planets to align (i.e all the HW & software… Holy hell, what a PITA…) to record a little bit of foolin’ around on my Meeblip (https://meeblip.com/).

A few notes:

1. All real time performance* using only synthesized sounds (because samples are evil) controlled via knobs... The way synthesizers are supposed to be played. Keyboards are for typing! :)

2. I’ve got the MeeBlip connected to my iPad via simple “Y” mic/headphone cable. Thus the sound quality of the ‘bleep is probably not as good as it could be. I’m only using the square wave. I’ll prob. Do some more recordings of the saw, as well as the wavetables soon. But honestly, as far as the analog synth voices, the square is the most interesting to me. The Saw is OK with a little detuning, but I have a hard time getting it weird...

3) I’m running the entire performance (except for a few things that can not be midi mapped) with a Faderfox LD2. This is hand’s down an AMAZING controller. But neeneerneeneer you can’t have one as I bought the last two he had left. :) I know that in the future I’ll be spending A LOT of money on more of his controllers.

4) Sequencing the ‘bleep with MIDI Pattern Sequencer (http://msequencer.blogspot.com/). I’m barely touching the surface here. All I’m doing is muting/unmuting like 3-4 sequences in just one pattern. I’ve got it set up so I have other patterns that JUST sequence ALL the Meebleepin’ parameters… Things can get a little weird. Especially if you set pattern lengths to not be even. Great sequencer.. REALLY needs Link support & MIDI learn/control. Would be PERFECT then.

5) The drum/perc are coming from Elastic Drums (http://mominstruments.com/elasticdrums/). While I love ED, it’s REALLY flaky in AudioBus. Getting it to consistently send midi clock, not have playback glitches, lose midi controller mapping when in AudioBus (keeps resetting the “use one controller flag!!!). It’s just one basic pattern, and I mute/unmute, change levels or FX sends via Faderfox. Can’t map tempo change to midi, so that’s why you see me switch to it a few times.

6) I’m using two amazing, free iOS FX: Frobulator (http://frobulator.walkytalky.net/ pitch/stereo shifting delay’ish “thing”) and Muckraker (http://muckraker.walkytalky.net/ Insane distortion seizure machine). I’m controlling all their parameters real-time via Faderfox as well (including bypass, etc.).

7) All this iOS crap and system input (MeeBlip) is routed in AudioBus and mix control is via MiMixer (http://ttrgames.hu/mimix/) AB widget.

8) Yes, The video gets a little odd.. But it’s better than just watching a dude twiddle his knobs on YouTube I think. :)

9) I could have (and have) gone on for literally hours with this crazy little red box (as if this wasn’t long enough…). But I had to pick up kid from school, and the rain was coming in. :)

"This is a 6 voice DCO analog synthesizer. So the synth automatically tunes the oscillators when it is turned on. All of the functions and parameters work. It also has on-board effects, an arpegiator, and a sequencer.
I opened the synthesizer to check the internal memory battery, the voltage is still good and physically looks to be in good shape. It also has all the 100 original patches.
It has a 5 octave velocity sensitive keyboard, which is very responsive.
There is also midi in, out, and outputs for the individual voices.

The synth is in great shape for its age. It looks practically new.
The power adapter has some electrical tape around the base of the connector but it works."

Patch Notes #25 - The #3ModuleChallenge

Published on Oct 28, 2016 Voltage Control Lab

"Getting in on the Modular Podcast #3modulechallenge with this Patch Notes. Using 3 of my favorite Eurorack modules, Make Noise DPO, Mutable Instruments Clouds and Ornament & Crime.

Stick with me here, this one is complicated.

The modulation oscillator on the DPO is in LFO mode. The Saw out is routed to clock the TR1 input on Ornament & Crime, which is in Copier Maschine mode. Clouds right audio output is routed to the CV1 input on O&C, as the cv source for the analog shift register.

Channel A on O&C is routed to the DPO 1v/oct input on the main oscillator, and stackable'd to the Clouds position CV input as well. Channel B is routed to the fold section CV in. Channel C is routed to Clouds density CV in. Channel D into the Clouds 1v/oct input.

DPO modulation oscillator triangle wave output is routed to the Clouds right channel input. The sine wave out is patched to the angle section CV in. The expo FM input is set to 3 o'clock, linear FM to noon. The FM bus is set to 1:30.

The main oscillator sine out is stackable'd out to the shape section CV input, and fed back into the main oscillator expo FM input. The square wave output is patched to the Clouds texture CV input, and the Final output is patched the Clouds left input channel.

Clouds is in granular processing mode, and is routed out through the Malekko Mix4 for volume control and recorded clean into the Native Instruments Audio 10.

Yello Performing Live with No Cables?

video by Yello

Update: Note the following does not express the opinions of the site. Readers are free to send in what they want, and readers are free to leave their opinion in the comments.

The original post:

Remember the image to the left of Boris Blank of Yello with his synth setup from this previous post? What we couldn't quite see is the setup appears to be missing some very important cabling. That of course, is forgiven for promo shots, but take a look at the second image below captured from the live performance video above.

MATRIXSYNTH reader D' Naab 136 of Analogue Renaissance, caught it and sent it in. He had the following to say:

"I was a bit gutted yesterday that I was unable to attend the first 'live' performance of Yello yesterday in Berlin. Even more so when I saw the first attached picture. Wow, full modular setup + Oberheim two-voice + Modor + ... . However, found the lack of patchcables in (and going out of) some of the modulars a bit strange, but that picture was from during the buildup and thought most still had to be connected...

This morning I saw a movie from last night on their page. No change in patches and apparenly they can play the modorf without power,midi/usb and audio plugged into it.

Quite happy I did not spend the money on this charade."

The 3rd image below is from a video on German TV also in via D' Naab who mentions: "None of the modulars and synths or even the mixer have power."

Yamaha CS-60 synthesizer noodling

Published on Oct 27, 2016 raycastile

Very Vangelis!

Video description:
"Yay! I finally have a Yamaha CS-60 synthesizer. I went through a lot of grief to get this. It was not in good working order when I received it. Dan Manning of Gateway Music Gear LLC worked to restore it. He completed Part 1 of the restoration, then let me have it back for a few weeks. Now he has to take it back to his workshop to finish it. Before I lose it again for a month, I want to enjoy playing it a bit. There's some distortion and ghost notes, and the pitch ribbon sometimes goes crazy. All that should be fixed in Part 2 of the restoration. Dan is a good tech and I know he will bring this grand old synth fully back to life. But even with its issues, it sounds pretty good! It was not playable before Dan worked on it. (You don't want to buy a CS 50/60/80 without first identifying a good synth tech within reasonable driving distance of your house.)

This video is nothing extraordinary. I'm just fiddling around, playing with the different sounds. In the background, I have a MoroderNova (it's behind my head) playing an arpeggiated D major chord, and a Korg M1 (you can see the corner peeking into frame on the far right) playing a repeating D note using the Roland XP-30's arpeggiator. Then I have a D-50 holding a sustained D major chord.

Sorry for the poor audio quality. This was an impromptu video. I just propped my iPhone on the edge of a chair and started filming. It looks like the audio is out of sync with the video. Not sure how that happened. In the future, I'll shoot something that looks and sounds better. But at least I have a video record of this synth's existence before it leaves me again."
