"This unit has a memory expansion installed. It was installed prior to my ownership - but it has been a GREAT feature. Look in the photos where it says "Jupiter 8" at the upper right of the body - there is a small 3-position switch. In position one, you have a complete set of presets. Switch it to position two, and all of the presets are now loaded and saved from position two. Same with position 3. It works perfectly."

New Bubblesound DiOD Filter - Classic Steiner Parker Diode Filter

"The DiOD Filter is a faithful recreation of the classic Steiner Parker Diode Filter with modern inout and output buffers. This keeps the noise to a minimum while retaining everything that made this filter a classic. The DiOD is a unique sounding and versatile filter in a small 4HP package. From soft and smooth to brutal, noisy and chaotic, the DiOD's flexibility will make it at home in any size system.

This filter will track, but not as tight as the VCOb and it will self resonate; in fact at the upper reaches of the Resonance it's pretty hard to control.

Compact and quiet enough to chain several together for stereo filtering, adding more poles or creating a very resonant phaser.

The 2 CV inputs can be CV or Audio.

Specs
4HP
20MM deep
+50mA
-30mA
2 CV inputs
High Pass, Band Pass and Low Pass settings
Single Output."

The filter is soon to be available assembled from Control exclusively till the end of the year and kits from Control, Modular Addictand Thonk.

Roland Boutique Start - TB-03 (a short tutorial)

Published on Dec 5, 2016 RolandChannel

"This video is a short tutorial on the Roland Boutique TB-03 Bass Line Synthesizer.

0:17 Step Rec Mode
1:25 Original 303 Rec Mode
2:46 Connecting CV/GATE

The Roland Boutique TB-03 is a direct descendant of the famous TB-303 Bass Line Synth. The layout and controls are unchanged, so it works just like the original. It sounds like it too, thanks to Roland’s advanced ACB technology that recreates the hypnotic liquid grooves of the magic silver box.

But the new TB-03 goes even further, with several enhancements not found on the original model. The four-digit LED display makes programming easier and more accurate, while overdrive and delay effects let you unleash a twisted, tribal wall of sound to send the crowd into a frenzy.

Back in the studio, the TB-03 can send control information via MIDI or its USB port, the latter of which also functions as a audio interface."

Good video on the difference between vector synthesis and wave sequencing on the Korg Wavestation line of synths in general. Vector synthesis was introduced on the Sequential Circuits Prophet-VS. The tech was then applied to the Yamaha SY-22 and TG-33 after Yamaha acquired SCI. It then made it's way to Korg on the Wavestation which added wave sequencing to the mix.

"Emu Emulator II in really nice condition with HXC floppy emulator SD card installed containing Emu Systems, OMI & Burmer libraries among others. You can also sample and save to SD card as well as copy additional sounds / disk images to SD card. The power can be set to 240V or 115V

The sampler is in great shape for it's age and has memory expanded to maximum as well as having the power supply rebuilt and a general service including new LCD backlight. There is an area near the attack slider where the clear coat has worn off (pictured) there are no other notable marks or damage and a reproduction label will be included should the buyer wish to install it. I was happy with the condition of the label as it is. Please note that the HXC is clear and easy to read but hasn't shown up well in the photos."

NYZ DRNH Limited Cassette Release on Gamma Mine Featuring Hinton Instruments Modular

Dave Burraston aka NYZ/noyzelab has a new release out titled DRNH soon available on cassette and digital download. You'll find some info on the gear used exclusively for MATRIXSYNTH further below, but first, here is some info on the release via noyzelab:

"Launching Gamma Mine's explorations into electronic systems music is 'DRNH', a new release from award winning artist Dave Burraston. “DRNH” continues 2016's releases from the ever-prolific artist, who has released works on labels including .MEDS, Feral Tapes, Computer Club and ALKU, this year alone.

Under his NYZ alias, Burraston studies modulation-based synthesis techniques from his Noyzelab studio, NSW, Australia. As an extension to the activities captured on 'DRN4' (.MEDS, 2016), the systems utilised on “DRNH” have been broadened to include additive synthesis, ring modulation and non-linear waveshaping alongside Burraston's staple frequency modulation synthesis techniques. The following is a declassified listing of equipment used in this research:

Hinton Instruments Music Lab modular prototype
Yamaha SY99 & TG77 with cellular automata generated microtunings
MANIAC/Ulamizer-II cellular automata sequencing
Tiptop Z-DSP & Numberz with custom programs

The result is a collection of recordings which take the listener from sci-fi atmospheres (“NYZ-1_HI-SIN”) to whirring electronics (“NYZ_Z-DSP+NUMBERZ-DRN1”), playful FM studies (“FM80Pcellular”, “FM60Pcellular”) to meditative drones (“CSN2-excerpt1-mono”, “DRNH”). “DRNH” releases on 9th December 2016 on white C90 cassette and digital formats:

A1. NYZ-1_SHPR_mono (01:40)
A2. NYZ-1_HI-SIN (07:17)
A3. NYZ-1_FM20Pcellular (02:04)
A4. NYZ_Z-DSP+NUMBERZ-DRN1 (06:42)
A5. FM80Pcellular (05:08)
A6. CSN2 excerpt1-mono (14:29)
A7. FM60Pcellular (05:42)
B1. DRNH (44:44)"

MATRIXSYNTH - NYZ - DRNH synth info leak

--- NYZ:DRNH INFO LEAK MSG BEGINS ---

Matrixsynth asked NYZ for some extra info on this release, so this extra bonus snippet is provided exclusively!

=>

Thanks for asking for some more info on the NYZ - DRNH release, this tape has been great fun to put together. Finlay Shakespeare (Moog Sound Lab UK engineer/tech & also the guy who runs Future Sound Systems eurorack modular) has done a great mastering job on it for his new Gamma Mine label.

The equipment I listed up on Noyzelab is not everything that was used.. but covers a fair bit of ground. I can give you a few extra bits of info though :

NYZ_Z-DSP+NUMBERZ-DRN1 - Made using the Intellijel/Cylonix Cyclebox-II+Expander going into a Tiptop Z-DSP with some custom programs I've written. A big thanks to Richard D James for giving me my first blank Z-DSP cartridge.. "ere u go, get on with summat" or words to that effect :) In this case it was using various ring modulation schemes. For a great reference I highly recommend Graham Hinton's ModMix application pages which details a range of ringmod/wave shaping algorithms :

applications.htm

moreapplications.htm

CSN2 excerpt1-mono - This is from some Hinton Instruments Music Lab modular sessions in 2013, and the methodology is pretty much the same as discussed in 'NYZ DRN4 Declassified' on Matrixsynth. A type of FM/additive/RM switched synthesis controlled via a cellular automata network (MANIAC cellular automata sequencer). The CSN is referred to in my notes as "Complicated Switching Network" so using complex systems to re-route sounds, a bit like a telephone network, imagine a bunch of ants running around repatching a modular synth and thats probably something like what's happening.. I often set these up and run them for days, take a few recordings here and there, it was nice just to listen sometimes as well, not to take a recording. I end up doing that a lot with these realtime generative/algorithmic systems because (depending on the parameters) they can take a long time to unfold, and sometimes you might just want the bit that happens after a few days, just let the system run till then..

FM60Pcellular - This was all done on a TG77 sequenced by the MANIAC cellular automata sequencer, with the original programming done using the SY99. I like to program on the SY99, but these days the outputs are getting very scratchy, so I transfer stuff over MIDI to the TG77 and do the final setup/mix with that + its got 8 individual outputs so little bit extra mixing scope. The voicing on this is a simple mix of FM/AWM voices, the bassline sound is the AWM voice. There's a great resource on SY99/TG77 programming written by Herbert Janssen, which also includes a section on waveshaping :

"This listing is for an extremely rare CHAMBERLIN Rhythmate (model 25) tape loop drum machine. It is one of the first drum machines ever produced, made in 1949. This is a modular version that seems to have been made to hang on a piano or organ bench. Very little is known about it or if there are any others. It may have been a one-off. The internal workings are a marvel to behold with several feet of recorded drum loops winding around multiple pulleys. See video's...

It measures a tiny 8.5 inches tall, 4.5 inches wide and 6 inches deep!

ACCESSORIES - Includes the Reverse Hanger to mount on a organ bench. This item comes only as seen in photos, does not include any other accessories.
PHYSICAL CONDITION - Excellent. The paint on the reverse hanger scratched off in places and starting to oxidize. For it's age it's in great shape.
WORKING CONDITION - Very Good. We just got this little guy back from service from renowned tech Ken Rich (kenrichsounds.com)
In Ken's words "It's the most fascinating piece of gear I've ever had in my shop". This says a lot as Ken's shop has seen the utmost of coolest organs, electric pianos, synths and drum machines in the world. See the quick video below that Ken took of it's operation without the wood box covering its amazing internals."

Korg MS-20/Boss DR-55/DSI Prophet 6 - Tascamitch

Published on Dec 4, 2016 Jae Ryan

"I have a friends DR-55 analog drum machine for a week and wanted to record a quick jam with it before I let it go. It sounds great. The person I got it off had a very small but neat cassette based studio and made me kind of miss the fidelity and restrictions that always came with such a set-up, so I set out to try and recreate that vibe in a DAW based environment.

All the instruments are recorded to UAD's Studer tape plug-in with the Cassette preset. The MS-20's baseline is hitting a Strymon Timeline in stereo and I am manually riding the feedback knob with my free hand during the jam. The DR-55 is hitting the trigger in on the MS-20 patch bay. The prophet 6 is the swirly held pad sound that comes in the beginning and fades on the end. I manually automated it after the fact to make it even more dizzy. The DR-55 is going to a 224 reverb with most of the high end chopped off!"

"The BitBoard is a breadboard add-on module that allows users to build custom circuits and user interfaces for the BitRanger. It is solidly attached to the bitRanger and provides performance friendly stability. It either comes just on its own, or with with 2 pots, 2 buttons and 4 switches which can help you to start designing your own bitRanger interface."

"The synapsis is a 4×4 pushbutton matrix that offers performative control of the Bit Ranger.

There are 8 patch points connected to 4 rows (ABCD) and 4 columns (1234) of buttons. Pressing button A1 connects point A to point 1. A2 connects A to 2. B2 connects B to 2 and so on."

"The OMSynth (Open Modular Synthesizer) is an electronic musical instrument development interface that embodies the ethos and technical methodology of modular synthesis but is designed specifically for inventors. One way this is achieved is by encouraging invention to start at the breadboard level. From here circuits can be built up to robust, road ready instruments. By starting at the breadboard circuits are cheap and flexible and the inventor is free to quickly build and change designs without fighting against a high level form factor.

Moog Minitaur - Custom Wood enclosure & Midi keyboard

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"What we have here is Moog Minitaur built into a custom wood enclosure.

The idea is to get the vibe of the original Moog synths, but with some of the modern features that the Minitaur has.

Minitaur is in great condition and functions and sounds exactly as it should, it's got the rack ears attached to be mounted into the enclosure.

Keyboard is an Alesis Q25, it was the smallest Midi keyboard I was able to find (at the time) that had a dedicated midi hookup to use with an analog synth. There is a small crack/blemish on one of the keys. It appears to be cosmetic only and does not impede the functionality of the synth/controller. The keyboard is held in place with velcro, and can be swapped out for another model if preferred, although the enclosure is made to accommodate this particular model.

The enclosure was handmade, it's stained a dark brown "walnut" like coloring to it. I forget the exact wood it was made of, but it's well constructed, and sturdy. Bottom of the enclosure is not stained. The enclosure it designed to hold a 3 space rack unit, so the Moog Minitaur or Moog Slim Phatty are both compatible."

"The Jupiter 6 is an incredible analog synthesizer. The Jupiter series is known for their unique sound, which is unlike any other synthesizer!! This originality comes from the classic analog Roland filter, modulation capabilities and a fat cluster of 12 analog oscillators at 2 per voice. A very easy to use thing with amazing tweaking capabilities.

What makes this unit even more appealing is its MIDI, allowing you to sync this classic synth with your favourite DAW. The Europa Firmware by Synthcom Systems Inc. provides even more stable MIDI. The Europe Firmware also features an extensive arpeggiator, which will sync to MIDI clock."

"I had just been to a Christmas party so before putting the clothes back into the closet I thought I might as well use them in a music video. So I hope you can excuse that I am a little more dressed up than usual.

Anyway

'We don't need another hero' was a big hit for Tina Turner in the mid 1980s. It was also featured in one of the Mad Max movies. Here I play it on Technics SX-C600 and Elka X-1000 organs, Roland SH-2000 synthesizer and my old Yamaha saxophone. I had to play the sax solo an octave lower than the original because I am not so good at doing overtones or flageolett which would have been necessary for the original tonal range."
