Novation UltraNova Contest Update - We Have a Winner!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that we have a winner for the UltraNova contest! Apologies for the delay in the announcement. The contest ended on January 19th, just before we were all hit by the NAMM storm. I want to thank everyone who entered. Novation tells me this was one of their best contests yet, with over 1600 entries! Go MATRIXSYNTH! :) Novation promoted the contest on their social channels, while I promoted it here on MATRIXSYNTH. That said, I am extremely happy to announce that the winner of the contest is a reader of the site! The winner does wish to remain anonymous, which I totally understand and respect, being the anonymous mr. matrix myself. :)

I want to thank Novation for hosting the contest and giving a chance for my readers to win a free Novation UltraNova.  BTW, if you haven't already, be sure to check out my lengthy UltraNova review here. Novation offered to host the contest as a follow-up to the review.

Thank you Novation, and thank you to everyone who participated!

Polytik Synths Now On Kickstarter

Published on Jan 31, 2017 Polytik Synths

You might remember the previous posts on Polytik here and here. This is a project from Dirty Electronics/Mute Synth & Jack Featherstone. Below are some additional details captured for the archives, via the Kickstarter campaign here.

"Polytik is a collection of beautifully designed hand-held synth modules. Born out of a DIY ethos and the maker community, they have been crafted into something very different – a series of beautifully designed objects in their own right. We have used open-source hardware and software and encourage users to make new modules and hacks."

Playlist:

Polytik designers Jack Featherstone and John Richards in conversation
Polytik Synths x Jas Shaw

"The brainchild of John Richards and Jack Featherstone in collaboration with Artists & Engineers, these hybrid analogue/digital devices can produce a palette of sounds ranging from angular rhythmic sequences to abstract noise, pads and drones. The synths are designed to be tactile, to be held and touched when playing.

Polytik comprises four separate, colour-coded, battery powered modules. Every Polytik system needs a Core module and at least one sound module. The sound modules connect to the core with ribbon cables, these carry audio and control data to connect the system together giving you a single audio output for all modules. You can have up to three sound modules connected at one time.

The Starter Pack comprises a Core module and a Combi module, which we think is a really good way to start using Polytik.

Stupidity aside Morpheus is killer. A really impressive bit of kit that I honestly feel could offer something for everyone depending on what you're looking to do. There's so many potential applications with input sources a such a wide range of filters and their 3 controls. The on board sequencer can be vast and equally powerful.

Here's the noise video [posted here] I've mentioned at several points showing more filter modes shaping noise. As noise (white noise at least) by nature is broadband it shows off the filters well."

Ops Modular Synthesizer for iOS

iTunes: Ops - Jonathan Mackenzie

iTunes: Ops - Jonathan Mackenzie

"Ops is a modular synthesiser designed to make it easy to create and explore sound interactively with a touch screen. Ops does away with patch cords, instead using a system of connected blocks with a clear signal flow.

The blocks, called ops, are joined together into structures by dragging and dropping them on screen. Structures can easily be copied and varied to build-up rich, interesting results.

There are ops to perform a wide range of functions, including interaction, signal generation, effects processing, control, audio input, MIDI input, and pitch and rhythm manipulation."

SSF Entity Bass Drum Synth - Waveform Processing

Published on Jan 31, 2017 SteadyStateFate

"The Entity Bass Drum Synthesizer can be used as a waveform processor as well. This is accomplished by patching a waveform from a VCO into the TRIGGER input on the Entity BDS.

The controls will now alter the texture and harmonic content of the resultant sound. This demo shows some examples of how the controls affect the sound. Vowel-y filter and wave-folder style affects can be achieved in this manner.

Another entity is used to make the kick drum sound for effect - and the duck output from the kick is patched into the processor to duck the output volume."

Moog Music: Sonic Origins | Russell E.L. Butler

An inspiring video from Moog Music featuring Rusell E.L. Butler.
Side note: I'm truly humbled and honored to have Russell as a supporting member of the site, as well as Moog Music as a sponsor on the right.

"Today we debut 'Sonic Origins', a new video series that explores the origins of creativity and seeks to unearth the underlying elements of artistic identity. The series kicks off with Oakland-based producer Russell E.L. Butler.

Techno-rhythmic emancipator Russell E.L. Butler has a lot on their mind: while dealing with the loss of gear and more importantly some dear friends in the Oakland Ghost Ship fire, they are also releasing a new EP and celebrating their recent addition to Moogfest 2017. Here, Butler opens up about taking inspiration from their Bermudan roots, connecting with one's various identity consciousnesses, and, ultimately, music as self-liberation.

For the filming of the first Sonic Origins, Russell composed a hard hitting improvised modular session titled 'Sirens From a Distance' using four Mother-32s, a Make Noise 0-Coast and more.

Super nice pics via this auction

"If you are looking at this, wise viewer, you already know what awaits; one of the most incredible polyphonic analog synthesizers ever created since the dawn of man and music. It would, in fact, not be too bold to state that this Rhodes Chroma Polaris completely embodies the timeless, incredibly sought-after sound of the 80s and beyond. From lush pads to stabbing leads, ringing pulse-modulated keys and shimmering textures, the Chroma Polaris was the absolute cutting edge of analog synthesizer technology at the time of its release in 1984. Any musician, with the means at their disposal, would be considered naught but addlebrained fools, to neglect bringing every resource to bear in acquiring this incredible machine with all due haste.

"Submitted for your approval is the E-mu systems SP-12 Sampling Percussion unit. If you know me, you know I love these. I found this one bummy and busted. I took it to Forat and after many repairs. He:

Repaired boot problem.
Replaced broken output 4 jack.
Replaced incorrect fuse with a proper one.
Replaced battery.
Completely refurbished all pads and replaced broken or missing parts.
Completely refurbished all Function buttons.
Sliders are jumpy and very sticky, installed 8 brand new sliders.
A/D converter offset is totally wrong, ran diagnostics and calibrated offsets.
Tightened transformer.
Cleaned master volume, click and sample input pots.

This unit is a sparkling 30 year guaranteed worker. Cosmetically it has some issues. There is a black case instead of the normal grey, it looks like someone bought an sp1200 and then modded the sp12 panels over it. The screen has a cover on it, which is not the same as I being on other units. This unit works great though, sliders and buttons are immaculate, this is the turbo model with os 2.4 (See demo). It has 5 seconds sample time. The screen is brighter than ones I've had in the past, but I don't think it was replaced. This unit is a trooper, it looks like it was serviced at rogue music years ago and for being older than me it's still working just as well."

"This unit is in excellent cosmetic condition, I have raised the shadow level on all these images so you can see the quality of the black plastic and the panel fascia.

Here are the list of the very few marks on this 15 year old instrument: - some marks are to be expected, it is used.

The LCD, Ribbon and laminate panel are perfect.

The metal front and back chassis are near pefect, only a slight mark by the IEC power outlet (as to be expected where plugs are plugged in and out) and there is a small chip on the white paint of the E of the Alesis.

The plastic side cheaks are in excellent condition, these take a real beating (why Alesis used plastic and not wood I don't know, I guess cost-cutting!), naturally there are a few small marks but this is one of the best examples I have seen, and I have owned 3 units over the years!"

Published on Jan 30, 2017 Matt Greer

"A live synthesizer performance using an Elektron Monomachine, a Novation Circuit and the Bass Station 2.

So, this is the 4th track I've developed for my winter gigs. It is a modified version of a track I've done in the past. This time I've sped it up and lengthened the middle, techno session a bit.

Initially I wanted to write all brand new music for my performances but there just isn't time. Regardless, I've never played this one out so it's still getting a stage debut in a couple of weeks.

There are a couple spots where I get a tad sloppy with the BS2 so I'll have to refine that in the practice stage.

Exploring Black Holes 19122016 No.05 [2x SpaceHole] // Korg Monotribe & Zoom MS-70CDR

Published on Jan 30, 2017 Computing.Sound

šŸ›°šŸ•³šŸ”Š
Exploring the MS-70's SpaceHole algorithm.

This time two in series.

The manual states that it's based on the Eventide SPACE BlackHole algorithm, which according to Eventide's website originated their 4000 series Ultra-Harmonizers rack-mount units.
There's also a plugin from Eventide called Blackhole.

But here I stick to the Zoom pedal. Although the plugin might also get me in the future...

Korg monotribe ➡ Zoom MS-70CDR [2x SpaceHole] ➡ audio interface

I love the combination of the two units.
Both small.
Both relatively affordable.

And as much the monotribe's (insert basic synthesizer or sound source of your choice) limitations can frustate for some uses, in this case they make it quite fantastic and a lot of fun, at least for me.

Knas Ekdahl Moisturizer

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

"Basically, the Ekdahl Moisturizer is a spring reverb where the springs are exposed so they can be played/hit/fiddled with. As well as being capable of creating sound in itself, you can of course also play sound through the springs like a regular spring reverb - this makes for happy-fun-time finger-modulation of the reverb on whatever audio that's going through it. On top of this there's an analog multimode filter that can be used to attenuate or exaggerate certain frequencies in the sound, this is real handy while playing the springs as you can - for instance - cut all the highs and just make thunderous doomy sounds or do the opposite; cut all the lows and make that ear piercing high frequency special love. Also, it incorporates an LFO that's internally routable to the filter and that also has some external routing-stuff. The Ekdahl Moisturizer has tons of CV / Expression pedal options on the back for even more hillarious moments. The Moisturizer is a mono unit."

Dave Smith Instruments Prophet '08 Brass Patch

Published on Jan 30, 2017 Sacred Synthesis

"At the news of the discontinuation of the Prophet '08, I quickly decided to buy one last unit, a module. I had intended for several years to create something of a "Prophet '08 System" consisting of one keyboard version combined with two module versions, and all of this topped off with - what else? - another Prophet '08 Keyboard. To state the obvious, this instrument suits my needs better than any other instrument I know of. The nature of my music requires an immensity of sound, rather than a wide variety of tones. So, the obvious solution was to build up a system that could sound similar in size to a pipe organ, brass ensemble, or an orchestra.

This admittedly average improvisation is meant merely to demonstrate my first "PWM Brass" patch using this Prophet '08 System. Words cannot describe the magnificent immensity of this sound when heard in person, and I dare say that YouTube cannot in the least do it justice. Anyway, here's a moderately short demonstration of twelve oscillators and three simultaneous octaves of pulse width modulation. The patch uses the Stack Mode, so it's actually limited to only four voices.

At the mixer, the keyboard is centered, while one module is panned to the right and the other to the left. All the music was played on one keyboard; no bass pedals were used. Pure and undiluted Prophet '08!

Learning Modular Synthesis: Arturia Modular V – Introduction

Learning Modular Synthesis: Arturia Modular V – Introduction from Learning Modular on Vimeo.

"This is the course overview for 'Learning Modular Synthesis: Arturia Modular V' where I lay out the basic idea of the course, and what will be covered in what order.

One of the most exciting areas of music creation is modular synthesis, where you get to interconnect the fundamental building blocks of a synthesizer to create your own instrument. In this course, music industry veteran and synth designer Chris Meyer uses the Arturia Modular V software – a realistic emulation of the original Moog modular synths of the 1960s and 1970s – to teach you how to "patch" a modular synth to create your own sounds. Chris starts with the fundamentals of how harmonics and sound work, as well as how to connect the modules together. He then goes through the main modules individually, explaining the differences between oscillator waveshapes, filter types, and more, while demonstrating how to use them in a musical context. The third chapter teaches advanced techniques such as frequency and amplitude modulation, as well as using the effects and advanced filters in Arturia Modular V.

The course is available through LinkedIn Learning (http://bit.ly/lms_amv_lil) and Lynda.com (http://bit.ly/lms_amv). If you do not already have a subscription to one of these services, sign up for an account at http://lynda.com/trial/chrismeyer and sample this course and any of the others they offer, including well over 250 on audio and music (including my original Learning Modular Synthesis course for hardware modular systems: http://bit.ly/LearningModular). If you don't like what you see, cancel before 10 days and your credit card will not be charged."

Sunset Drive

Published on Jan 29, 2017 davidryle

"SUNSET DRIVE by Tangerine Dream. From the movie "Wavelength".

An exercise in simplicity of motion. The beautiful ideas expressed by TD were well defined in this piece with six basic elements.

1. The Bass line is made by a combination of two trigger patterns mixed into a row of 901 Moog style (Moslab) oscillators, which are run through the quintessential low pass Moog ladder filter - 904B (Moslab).

2. The wandering, hollow sequence below is a synthesizers.com Q119 into four vco's and another ladder filter - Q150 in -12dB two pole.

3. There are a pair of intertwined ratchet chuff percussive sounds which I took upon myself to imagine. In reality Chris Franke probably used a more common single voice to interplay against the wandering sequence but I found the rapid hocketting sound to fit well in the 1980's era TD style. These lines were generated by an STG Soundlabs voltage mini store sequencer and a Switch module into a pair of Q106 vco's in soft sync.

The bass line and ratchet sounds are both sent through a 73B Dual Delay from Modcan.

4. The stab chord is a unison double-octave G from the Roland JX-8P. The patch is "Whitewidow" and is modified quite a bit. I am not so certain this was the synth used by TD for this particular song, but it seemned to work well.

5. The flute sound is a sample from Sampletron of the Mellotron Mark V 'Mltron Fultes'. I used a bit of delay in Sampletron and a little Valhalla reverb to thicken it.

6. The middle portion glassy sound is again the Roland JX-8P with the 'Waveaura' patch. This patch is all over TD's 80's music and particularly prevalent on"Wavelength". I used the patch as-is and another duplicate track with some modifications. Quite a bit of Lexicon reverb and delay was added.

All clock timings were generated using midi and sync24 from Cubase. The main clock base in the modular was the Suit & Tie Guy Time Divider and Integer Divider modules. The Moon Modular 563 Trigger Sequencer was used to generate the main lower bass line timing and the STG Soundlabs TMS was used for the upper bass line. A Q960 was employed to fine tune the levels between the two bass line elements. A Yusynth AC/DC mixer was used to mix the envelopes and control voltages to the filter and vca.

I am a long time fan of Tangerine Dream and particularly fond of their sequential modular work over the last forty years. The music can be purchased from http://www.tangerinedream.org/."

Plant Music #4 – (MIDI Sprout + Metasonix)

Published on Jan 30, 2017 Smokey Quartz

"In this experiment, the MIDI Sprout is a 'one-plant band', playing the drums and synthesizer. The MIDI signal coming from the Sprout are being sent to both the Metasonix D-1000 drum machine and the S-1000 Wretch Machine. With some MIDI tools in Ableton, I’m restricting the signal to 4 notes to play the D-1000. The Polygamist is also shown being manipulated but it is only sending control voltages to the S-1000, it is not heard in this video. Reverb is coming from the Metasonix R-56 Spring Reverb module just outta sight about the D-1000. I don’t start touching the succulent, a Crassula falcatta, until about 1:20."

"The MG-1 was built by Moog for Realistic (sold by Radio Shack). Very good way to get some Moog sounds... It is is an analog synth, Designed by Moog with a genuine Moog filter. It can produce sawtooth, square and pulse waveforms, and the oscillators are detunable and syncable. An envelope called contour can be applied to both the amp and the filter. Another section provides triangle or square wave patterns as well. A slider on the far right side of the keyboard controls the volume of polyphonic organ sound. There are RCA inputs and outputs but no external speakers. Works great and it's in immaculate shape for a 35-plus year -old synth."

CONTROL SYNTHS AND DRUM MACHINES USING A GAMEBOY

Published on Jan 30, 2017 LOOK MUM NO COMPUTER

"THE GAMEBOY MAKES NO SOUND. it is merely being used as a controller!

using LSDJ, and the ARDUINOBOY code (search both of them up and your sorted)

its super simple to build.

you only need a gameboy, a cartridge for gameboy, look at shops like kitsch bent or retrotowers.

search up arduino nano on eBay they are about £2, 6 led's 1 6N138 and a handful of other things. its real easy. you will be pointed in the right direction if you search up arduinoboy. there are even assembled versions!!

this is only a very small amount of what LSDJ, and arduinoboy do! i don't think its a very popular feature of either of them. but its all i use them for!"

Switches enable each channel to be either V/Oct (Roland, Moog, Arp etc) or Hz/V (Korg MS series). Gate polarity can be either positive or S-trigger (Moog) type.

There is also DIN sync output for vintage Drum Machines which can be locked to the MIDI tempo..."

"This product is still in development and the final list of features on production units may change.

The SX-1 is a 'stand alone expander' based around the Synthi AKS KS Expander (described elsewhere on this website). It is the result of ongoing collaborations between Digitana Electronics and the legendary UK band The Future Sound of London. It shares all the features of the Synthi AKS KS Expander but requires no Synthi to use it (though one can of course be used with it) and in addition has a host of new features described below.

SX-1 FEATURES

DUAL ANALOGUE VCO
Each VCO features sine/triangle and square waves and 'wave-folding' (voltage controlled) that adds higher harmonics/distortion to each waveform for amazingly rich and varied timbres, even unfiltered! Each VCO is frequency controllable via CV1 or CV2 which can either be external or MIDI generated from the built in MIDI-CV converter or 'free running'. The frequency range of the VCOs is very wide, from LFO to high frequency audio. Two modulating waveforms are available (speed controlled by the Sample & Hold clock or LFO) via toggle switches to modulate the wave-folding of VCO1 and VCO2. These same waveforms are also available to modulate CV1 and CV2. All VCO1 and VCO2 waveforms are individually available either 'pre' or 'post' the filter/envelope/delay/distortion sections via 3.5 mm jacks.

"Korg Trident MK1. This thing sounds amazing and super old school analog. Everything works great on this. There are a few missing button caps, but the buttons still work great and I can ship extra buttons along with it ( I have a bag with a bunch in there). This has been serviced maybe a year ago. Obviously many marks on the case especially on the wood but other than that this thing is in pretty awesome shape..."
