Not NAMM 2017: DJTW Pocket Mixer Project Update

Published on Jan 16, 2017 djthomaswhite

"This is a video of my updated DJTW Pocket Mixer. It has 1 audio/sync combo input (Teenage Engineering format), 5 more audio inputs, 5 sync outputs and 1 main (mono) mixed audio output. You can chain 6 Teenage Engineering devices together at once with no need for the internal mixing of the Pocket Operator series. This is totally DIY still but now with powder coated case, water slide decal labeling, new style Alpha pots and a more polished look overall. They really add a lot to the Teenage Engineering line of devices but can also work for Volca's. Using them like this would mean 5 shared sync jacks (like a multiple) and 6 mono audio inputs mixed to one main mono output.

The concept is now proven, and I'm looking for someone to partner with to build these. I am working on an "active" powered version but have yet to complete the mixer circuit thus far. I have many ideas about how to do a version of what you see here in this video but with some small and vital improvements. I simply don't have the time between family, work, school and my music business to properly focus on making these. If you are interested in talking about making these happen for real lets chat. It could easily be a Eurorack interface module too."

"This time the module is being played whit a 8 step sequencer, so my lack of keyboard ability is not as much a factor.

This module is based on the YM3812 FM synthesizer chip, and its companion the YM3014 digital to analog converter. This module is optimized for use with a CV and Gate controls. Six voices are available for simultaneous sound generation. Rhythm mode is enabled producing 5 distinct percussion sounds.

The YM3812 voices have 2 operators per voice that can be configured in either an FM or AM modulation."

Percussa to introduce Percussa Synthor System 8 at winter NAMM 2017

Details on Percussa's new synth system are in.

Update: new pic with text added left.

"Los Angeles, CA (USA) January 16, 2017 - Percussa is proud to announce the launch of its Synthor System 8, a new powerful hardware digital modular synthesis system, at winter NAMM 2017, January 19-22 in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Synthor System 8 is a turn key modern modular synthesis system, allowing musicians to create exciting new sounds by patching synthesis modules, changing synthesis parameters and modulation signals wirelessly, and defines a new category of synthesizers combining the old proven synthesis techniques with the latest innovations in musical interfaces.

Synthor System 8 consists of a new digital hardware synthesis module (Percussa ENGINE), a new control surface and wireless base station (Percussa REMOTE), and 8 Wireless modular controllers (latest generation Percussa AUDIOCUBES). Aluminium rack ears are included to mount ENGINE above the remote control surface for optimal usability.

Percussa ENGINE integrates seamlessly without any configuration or setup necessary with Percussa REMOTE, the main control surface for the ENGINE and wireless base station for the Percussa AUDIOCUBES, through its onboard SYNTHOR sound synthesis software, easily upgradable via SD memory cards for additional sound synthesis modules and new features.

ENGINE comes with a quad core cortex A17 @ 1.8GHz Processor running Linux Kernel v4, features 64-bit parallel DSP processing and a 1600x480 pixel wide format full colour LVDS Display with high visibility. ENGINE also features MIDI In, Thru and Out Ports, SD Card Slot, USB Host Ports (HID Support) and a USB Device Port (Stereo Digital Out, USB Audio Class).

ENGINE outputs sound via a 6 Channel AKM AK4456 DAC supporting up to 192 kHz / 32 bit (S/N: 115 dB) and offers sampling capabilities via its 2 Channel AKM AK5552 ADC supporting up to 192 kHz / 32 bit (S/N: 115 dB).

ENGINE, REMOTE and AUDIOCUBES are made from high end CNC milled wear resistant industrial plastics and aluminium, and feature high quality industrial temp switches, metal encoders and aluminium knobs.

Synthor System 8 can be upgraded with additional Percussa AUDIOCUBES later on, supporting up to 16 wireless devices in total in one wireless network. The wireless technology used in Percussa’s products was developed specifically for musicians and has proven its reliability and excellent performance in many professional musician’s setups around the world.

Come see Percussa’s Synthor System 8, ENGINE, REMOTE and wireless AUDIOCUBES at the Percussa Booth #4823, Hall C."

A quarter for perspective on size. Note the wires on bottom are functional:

"This little crazy synth was designed and hand made by electronic music visionary Peter Blasser. There is nothing like it in the world. I’ve already filled it with a whole bunch of awesome patches but you can program your own from you computer with the FISH editor, available here: http://shbobo.net/

I bought this from Peter a little over a year ago and have used it very little. It is in perfect condition and looks beautiful. It is the most recent version with the audio input jack (see pictures) so it can be used as a wacky sound processor. You play it by gently squeazing it to flex the wooden bars that then sent out digital information to the onboard ARM Cortex M3 32 bit processor. There are antennae on the bottom that sense flesh and distance. The buttons can also be programmed to do stuff. Plus the 8 red lights turned on and off to indicate activity. Or as Peter writes, 'Four bars on top feel your fingers and two woven antennae below sense flesh, complimented by a battery of buttons. There are red lights.' I put four rubber feet on the bottom so it’s easier to pick up.

The sounds on this thing are awesome and unpredictable and very interactive. This instrument is a must for any sound designer, experimental musician or forward thinking DJ."

"32 divided by 0" - Mother 32 & Make Noise 0-Coast Semi-modular

Published on Jan 16, 2017 Lost For Words

"Headphones recommended.

After tuning both to the same pitch I got the Mother 32 to play a short sequence and to also play the 0-Coast via patching only. (The midi cable going into the Mother 32 is purely to start the sequencer when I hit record in my DAW)

Some of the patching :

0-Coast RANDOM into the slope TIME and also the TEMPO on Mother 32 so that the sequenced notes are played at varying tempos

KB (keyboard) on Mother 32 to 1V/OCT on 0-Coast for pitch syncing

LFO TRI on Mother 32 to DYNAMICS on 0-Coast to modulate the volume of the 0-Coast sounds (sweeps in and out)

0-Coast triangle OSC in to the Mother 32 EXT AUDIO for a thicker 2nd osc sound"

"Chances are if you are looking at this you already know that it is a great classic synth and sequencer combo, it is very similar to a SH-101 in sound, sequencing is very similar to the mighty MC-4, and the accents and glides give it a bit of a TB-303 feel.

This particular one is in great condition and full working order, see pics of actual unit for sale, no battery leakage or knocked corners on the casing as is common with these, I would think you would have a tough job finding one in better condition given the age of these.

Personally I think 202's are underpriced compared to 101's and 303's so I think that they are set to appreciate in value over the next few years when people realise that none of the current new cheap analog synths around sound quite the same as the vintage originals, not knocking the new stuff but they do sound different, so both new and old are worth owning."

Is the OP-1 a Great Synth for a Beginner?

Published on Jan 16, 2017 Red Means Recording

"The OP-1 is a digital synthesizer workstation made by Teenage Engineering. People ask a lot of it it's a good synth for someone just getting into music. This attempts to answer that. This video represents my opinion and is not made to dissuade anyone from getting an OP-1. It addresses some of the limitations of the device (which some find beneficial) and some of the things I went through when starting out making music. Everyone is different!"

The one thing a computer can't do, of course, is emulate the hardware interface.
