Moon Modular 569LE Quad Lag Expander

Published on Jan 18, 2017 John L Rice

"A quick overview of the new M569LE expander module. (and after the over view some random noodling) I'm quite pleased and proud of this module since I was very involved with the initial design concept (feature set and panel layout) but Gert and his team at The Lunar Experience did all the "heavy lifting" with the actual circuit design and nice panel graphics etc. :-)

Additionally here's a little audio test peice of music I did using the 569 in 4x8 mode and all 4 channels of the 569LE engaged:"

Dervish D Vangelis Tribute by Paul Schilling

"A tribute to one of my musical Gods, Vangelis. His original comment for this track:

'inspired by the Dervish dancer who by his whirling realises the spiralling of the universe'"

The main synth sounds were created with Arturia Origin and CS-80V3 - mainly all Arturia Origin CS-80 modules, except for the Vangelis harmonica and lead sound, which is the Arturia CS-80V3. The percussion and pad towards the end are the DSI Prophet-6.

Roland MV-8000 MEGADRONE by LavLab

Published on Jan 18, 2017 HostileSlothRecords

"LavLab experimenting with the Roland MV-8000 Analog Modeling Bass Synth. All sound coming from one note on the Bass Synth with internal effects."

I forgot the MV-8000 had analog modeling bass synth built in. Curious if the model is unique to the MV-8000 or ported from one of their other synths.

Via Roland's site on the MV-8000:

"Built-in Bass Synth

A bonus feature unique to the MV-8000 is its new internal analog-modeled bass synthesizer, which can be played from the MV’s own trigger pads or via MIDI. With its two fat oscillators, multimode resonant filter, LFO, envelope follower, ring and cross modulation, delay, chorus, portamento, and more, this synth can inject serious style and spice into your productions."

and:

"NEW Version 3 Software

Roland continues its expansion of the MV-8000 platform with the release of Version 3 software. With linear-based recording already established on the MV, now come the additions of Pattern and Drum Grid composing modes — giving you the best of both worlds. Also new is a built-in analog modeling synth-bass and Pix Jam, an innovative new feature that lets you load and trigger your own custom graphics. The MV-8000 also sports ultra-intuitive operation via external VGA and mouse, with an enhanced piano roll editor and visual editing of waveforms in the audio tracks."

"Legendary EMS Synthi A.

It's 100% fully functional and in excellent shape.

Cosmetically it does show a some wear, mainly some of the lettering in the font panel graphics are worn out, but overall very nice shape with minimal signs of dings or scratches. Check out the pictures to make sure you like it. No funky odd smells or overly bad rusting, this one has been well kept over the years. I believe this unit is a MkII due to the presto patch in the patch pin section. Supposedly MkII's are more reliable due to better power supplies.

The EMS Synthi A is one of the most classic legendary mono synths, and it really is worth every penny, it has such unique huge analog sound and can get a range of tones like no other synth. A must have for any serious collector or musician's studio. This is a great chance to own a legendary synth. Don't miss out!"

Tips for NAMM Posts on MATRIXSYNTH

It's that time of year again! As always things get a bit hectic here on MATRIXSYNTH.

The following are some tips to keep track of your favorite gear.

1. Everything NAMM for 2017 will be labeled NAMM2017 at the bottom of each NAMM post. You can find the label on the right of the site under the "Check Out:" section as well. Clicking on the label will bring up all NAMM posts sorted by newest post on top.

2. To find all posts for a featured item, click on the company or brand label for the item at the bottom of the post, and previous posts will come up, again sorted by newest on top. Note non NAMM posts might be mixed in, so just scroll down to get to what you want. Creating a NAMM label for each brand to remedy this would be overkill. the train does not stop for NAMM, NAMM just gets thrown into the mix.

3. The New Gear in 2017 label applies to both NAMM and non NAMM new gear announcements, so be sure to keep an eye on that label as well if you are interested in new gear. In most cases, only the first post for the new item will come up, so you need not worry about weeding through multiple posts for the same item. Remember, you can always drill down by the manufacturer label for follow-up posts. You can find the New Gear label on the top right, under the "Check Out:" section, throughout the year.

4. Remember to click on the "Older Posts" link on the bottom of each page on the site for more.

5. Have fun!

NAMM is a crazy time of year on the site.

Expressive E Announces Lié & UVI Partnership

Uploaded on Jan 7, 2017 Expressive E

You might remember Expressive E's innovative Touché controller introduced last year at NAMM. The last post I had on them was actually back on January 25 of 2016. You might have wondered why they went dark for a bit. Well it appears they were busy making improvements as well as working with UVI.

"At the last NAMM Expressive E announced Touché, a unique instrument with a sensitive and tactile approach of synthesizers. Expressive E took time to refine their offer, and they have several things to announce:

- Lié, a powerful software
- An exiting partnership with UVI
- A brand new website
- Engaging video content

TOUCHÉ
Touché gives you a unique tactile approach of both software and hardware synthesizers, shaping and controlling their sound with a simple pressure of your hands. It feels natural and gives you a powerful connection with music.
Touché controls your synthesizers with four independant shi ings : Two vertical and two lateral shi ings. The four shi ings are extremely precise, reactive and sensitive. This opens up a wide variety of genuine instrumental gestures : progressive slides, subtle vibratos, percussive taps, hand-made LFOs... Each of the four shi ings can be independently mapped to one or several parameters of your synthesisers. To help you with this, Touché ships with Lié, its companion software.

LIÉ
Lié is a powerful software with a simple design. You can launch it inside DAWs supporting VST or AU plug-in formats. When you launch Lié, you can immediately start playing with the factory presets, or build your own sound from scratch.

The Browser shows you the list of the factory presets, as well as those you’ve saved yourself.

The Slot Center is an easy to use slot- based interface, with 8 assignable slots.

Each of the 8 slots allows you to map a parameter from your synthesizer to one of the four shi ings of Touché.

You can then adjust your sensitivity with min/max values and sensitivity curves.

The scope displays the pressure you’re applying on Touché.

You will find these three parts in either software or hardware connection scenarios, with slight

differences :

Playing with software

To control software synthesisers, Lié works as a host of virtual instruments with VST or AU format. Once hosted, you can access the virtual instrument’s interface directly from Lié, and quickly map parameters with Lié’s Speed Mapping features.

You can then save your configuration in a software preset that will appear in the browser.

Playing with hardware
Hardware synthesisers are controlled with Touché’s built-in CV and MIDI ports. Lié lets you configure what Touché sends through its CV and MIDI ports.

When working with MIDI, you can select the CC numbers of your synthesisers that you want to control, and assign them to one of the four shi ings of Touché. To make this workflow even easier, Lié ships with INIT presets for a selection of hardware synthesizers, replacing the CC numbers with the actual names of the parameters instead.
When working with CV, Lié lets you choose the voltages that Touché sends for each CV port individually, on a -10/+10 Volts range.

Hardware configurations can then be saved in a hardware preset that will appear in the browser. You can even flash these presets into Touché’s internal memory, and play with your hardware synth without any computer.

UVI
To fully exploit the instrumental potential of Touché, Expressive E made a partnership with UVI.

UVI was awarded multiple times for their industry-leading instruments, effects and sound libraries. Their flagship instrument, Falcon, is highly respected by some of the world's leading composers, sound designers, musicians and producers.

Expressive E used the powerful sound engine from Falcon to design over 100 exceptional presets. They offer a wide array of sounds, from agressive leads to soft pads, and a rich variety of playstyles.

These sounds will ship standard with every Touché, ready to be used within UVI’s player UVI Workstation.

Here’s a video showing Touché in action with some of the presets they have made:

Ieaskul F. Mobenthey Mr. Grassi Module

via CONTROL

"Some of us are at @NAMM some of us stayed in NYC to bring u Mr. Grassi via #ieaskulfmobenthy"

Details:

"Grassi, a touch-module, contains twelve square waves, used as the clock and data for shift registers, each followed by primitive resistor DAC. The DACs modulate clock and counter-clock wise, yielding closed loops of perpetual modulation, triggered by touch. Each of the six outputs are a single, four-bit DAC. Listening to them raw, they generate modem sounds to pure noise on touch. On release of touch, each DAC holds the contingent position of its DATA. Thus the DATA can be used as CV for up to six other operators, scrambled on touch. Touch->Scramble->Listen; Untouch->Hold->Feed.

Grassi, an ultra-raftable module, features all circuitry and the front panel on one circuit board. The final module thickness is only as deep as the 3.5mm jacks- not more than about a centimeter, so it can fit in a thin wooden case.

Grassi is a 12HP Eurorack module that runs on +12 and -12 volts. Actually it completely shuns the negative twelve volts, and thus it can run from a unipolar, plus twelve supply. This helps make it raftable, as it only requires a branch power line from the increasingly common 12V trunk. Thus, when ordered with a wooden case, it has a 2.1mm, tip positive, 12 V jack to power it. For mounting in a traditional Eurorack case, it comes
with a power connector traditional to that format.

Grassi features a triangular hexagon, used for square-wave outputs (outer rim) and DAC triggers (inner core). Thus, a triggering touch should connect an outer station to an inner station, to begin the rungling process.

Rungling, a coin of Rob Hordijk, is exactly what Mister Grassi does. He takes two oscillators and mixes them in the shift register chip, treating one as data and the other as clock. The result, a memory heterodyne, feeds back into the oscillators. This circular process traverses both analog and digital, soft tones and square drones.

Width: 12HP"

MUTANT RIMSHOT - NAMM2017 first look - Hexinverter Électronique

Published on Jan 18, 2017 Hexinverter Électronique

"First video look at the upcoming Mutant Rimshot eurorack module from Hexinverter Électronique. Come see it at NAMM2017!

The Rimshot is an analog rimshot and clave percussion synthesis module inspired by analog drum machines of the past. Like the other Mutant Drums, the Rimshot is capable of going above and beyond vanilla sounds. Expressive CV options, an external input and a multi-mode analog filter let you create unique percussion sounds in your modular synthesizer.

Available at modular retailers Feb/March 2017!"

"The Mutant Rimshot is an analog rimshot and clave percussion synthesis module inspired by analog drum machines of the past. Like the other Mutant Drums, the Rimshot is capable of going above and beyond vanilla sounds. Expressive CV options, an external input and a multi-mode analog filter let you create unique percussion sounds in your modular synthesizer.

Rimshot or clave - take your pick.

Triple-oscillator analog rimshot core inspired by the legendary 909
- Three modes of percussion synthesis: rimshot HI (classic), rimshot LO and clave (CLV)
- Voltage control of one of the oscillators' pitch
- External input to the filter lets you blend in other signal sources - wavetables and noise make for interesting percussion!
- Rimshot DRIVE control acts as a volume and overdrive control for the rimshot generator

Coupled to an analog multi-mode filter
- Bandpass, highpass and lowpass modes
- Self-oscillation of the filter plays nicely when mixed in with the rimshot generator
- Resonance clipping enabled by default. Feature can be disabled with a switch on the back of the module
- Voltage controlled cutoff
- Adjustable resonance

Modulation options sculpt the shape of your percussion
- Eurorack-compatible control voltage inputs (0 to 5V for full modulation) with bipolar attenuverters
- A practical analog trigger circuit allows activation of the Rimshot from many signal sources (anything with a positive-going edge lasting 2ms or longer). Most electronic drum pads can also directly trigger the Mutant Rimshot.
- An accent input accepts analog voltage control (0 to 5V will fully modulate the volume from low to high)"

'Fantastic Man' (Full Length) - A Film About William Onyeabor

Published on Feb 25, 2014 Noisey

Video description: "'You Need To Hear This' is proud to present 'Fantastic Man' a documentary investigating Nigerian musician William Onyeabor, a man shrouded in mystery and myth. Directed by Jake Sumner (Alldayeveryday) the film tells the story of a label's attempt to track William down, speaking to fans such as Damon Albarn, Caribou and Femi Kuti and travelling to Nigeria to meet those who've worked with him in a bid to uncover the truth about his story. http://williamonyeabor.com/"

William Onyeabor was Nigeria's First Moog Dealer & Electronic Musician. He passed away this Monday, January 16, at the age of 70. Be sure to see the video further below for a taste of his music. To the left you can see him with an Octave Cat, Elka Rhapsody 610, and Moog Polymoog.  MiniKorg 700s in back.

via Boing Boing, via Luaka Bop:

"It is with incredibly heavy hearts that we have to announce that the great Nigerian business leader and mythic music pioneer William Onyeabor has passed away at the age of 70. He died peacefully in his sleep following a brief illness, at his home in Enugu, Nigeria. An extraordinary artist, businessman and visionary, Mr. Onyeabor composed and self-released 9 brilliant albums of groundbreaking electronic-funk from 1977-1985, which he recorded, pressed and printed at Wilfilms Limited—his personal pressing plant in southeast Nigeria.

For people in his hometown of Enugu, Nigeria, Mr. Onyeabor was simply referred to as "The Chief”. He was known for having created many opportunities for the people in his community. In his early 30s, he traveled the world to study record manufacturing, so that he could build, "the greatest record manufacturing business in all of West Africa." After those successful years as an artist and record label President in the 1980's, he opened a flour mill and food processing business. In 1987 these new business ventures saw him awarded West African Industrialist of the Year—just two years after the release of his most successful song "When The Going is Smooth and Good", and what should have been the height of his musical career. He was given the honorary title "Justice of the Peace"—a local judicial position elected by the community to provide independent legal ruling. In the early 1990's, he became the President of Enugu's Musician's Union and Chairman of the city's local football team, The Enugu Rangers. Despite all of these extraordinary achievements, his biography was always shrouded in mystery—some claimed he had studied filmmaking in the Soviet Union, while others placed him in France or Great Britain. To his great amusement (and ours too for that matter), this mythic image was at times so deeply ingrained, that we often encountered people who were convinced that he didn't actually exist. Whenever we shared this with him, or would ask him a question about his past, he would just smile and say, "I only want to speak about God."

After five long years of painstaking waiting, negotiating and intense research, we were finally able to release “Who is William Onyeabor?” in 2013 and his music and story took the world by storm. The release was featured in major newspapers, radio and television stations around the world. Time Magazine listed him as number 4 on a shortlist of that year’s best albums. In 2014, the film documentary “Fantastic Man” followed, as well as the “Atomic Bomb! Who is William Onyeabor?” live shows, which travelled to the most regarded festivals and music venues worldwide-starring over 50 special guests from many diverse generations, genres and backgrounds.

Still, William Onyeabor would never speak about himself and for a long time refused any of the many interview requests that came his way. For an artist that had never performed live in his entire life, he repeatedly, and very sadly, would always decline our invitations to take part in any of the joyous celebrations that were created in his honor. Having become Born Again in the latter part of life, he had turned his back on the music from the earlier part of his life.

As one of the absolutely smartest people we ever encountered—William Onyeabor was always in charge, whatever the situation may be (and even though he was living in a fairly isolated part of rural West Africa). As can be heard in many of his songs, he looked at the world from a bird's eye view. He would watch American, Chinese and European news simultaneously, so he could learn about the different points of view from around the world. In his later years, he was still conducting business as usual. Whenever we visited him in Nigeria, he welcomed us warmly into his home. Whether it be at his palace outside of Enugu or via crackly phone lines to America, he always made us laugh. As is also very evident in his songwriting—another example of his true intellect and originality—he had the greatest sense of humor. His life and accomplishments will never cease to astonish us. More than anything, and still to this very day, his music continues to live on—nearly 40 years after it was originally released.

Chief William Ezechukwu Onyeabor is survived by his wife, children, and four grandchildren. We would like to send our deepest condolences to his family and thank each and every one of you who has helped share the love for his music around the world.

In the short and wonderfully intense nine years that we came to know him, he changed our lives in many ways. If he hasn't yet, we hope he will affect you too, one day."

Low Gain Electronics Shortbus V.2 Eurorack Module

via this auction

"The Short Bus is a seven input OR combiner. Aside from its new facelift (.060" powder coated steel panel) it has newly upgraded toggle switches which allow you to easily select one of three options, two dedicated bus outputs (labeled A and B) or you can select the 'Off' position. The Short Bus allows for easy mixing of gate, trigger, and clock signals. You can 'mix' CV with the Short Bus, however all negative voltages will be ignored. High voltage at the inputs takes priority and voltages are not 'Summed'. The OR combiner diodes have been upgraded to allow for lower voltage drops. Forward voltage drop average is now around .18V instead of .7V."

"The Tidal Wave is in first line a sound processor with waveshaper, filter and VCA but on the other hand a synth voice. A flexible VC-Mix/crossfader section with is used to create comb filter effects. A VC-LFO and an autotrigger envelope plus an internal modulation buss are used for CV routing with interesting opposite going modulations. All sections of the module can be used individually."

"Demo of E-MU Emulator 3 EIII Sequencer track from news channel"

Worth the wait.

via this auction

"We are selling our E-MU Emulator. It works, and appears to have been owned by a television station in its past. The sequencer has music from news segments and olympic coverage programmed. It has quite a few classic E-MU sounds saved in its banks including some nice strings, drums, electric guitars, and entire bank of dogs barking and panting.

It turns on, boots up, and plays. I have not tried to use the floppy drive, but it makes noise and the light flashes. The contrast knob is missing, but can be easily turned without the knob attached. There is some faint digital noise when it is on at higher volumes. It has not been restored, but it has been well cared for."

Arp Axxe SN 040

"Own a piece of synthesizer history!! For sale is a clean condition Arp Axxe synth! Great analog mono synth with one oscillator and very similar to the Arp Odyssey.

It is a very clean board with very few marks on the body. Wood side panels in great condition for its age and corner shown in picture shows the general light wear on all 8 corners and may be able to be cleaned up with a wood conditioner of some sort. Very close to collector's condition cosmetically. Half of the keys are yellowed due to the age of the board.

All notes play, and most of the controls work but the ADSR circuit will need repair. However, great refurb kits are available here on eBay and I don't want to do the repair myself. I'm positive the refurb kits will restore this synth to factory values to produce even better sounds than it does now as well as more precise control over the filtering and tonal sections.

Price reflects the condition of this board, and any experienced tech will be able to bring this board back to studio quality in no time!"

bitrman cv mod demo

Published on Jan 18, 2017 Brian Comnes

"Add CV to Alesis ModFX Bitrman. BEcause internal voltages are 0-3VDC, I had to add a simple voltage divider to reduce the sent voltage not to exceed 3 volts. Very simple with a 10K resistor on the + pole jooined by a 15K resistor from the negative pole. Then detach the center pins of the two pots for Bitr and Phasor and rout in the external voltage. Quite simple actually. Enjoy!! Sorry for low volume audio."

Update:

And the UI was created by her. :)

According to CDM:

"In place of drab text menus or something like that, the new Teenage Engineering PO-32 Tonic is … a little different. There are adorable characters with wide eyes and huge noses, quaffing cocktails. There’s a ringing telephone … with a mouse perhaps gnawing away at its end. There are spiders – various spiders.

No, I don’t mean the UI on the PO-32 display seems like it was drawn by a 9-year-old girl. It actually was.

Her name is Ivana, she really is nine years old, and she’s the daughter of Teenage Engineering CEO and founder (and whiz designer himself) Jesper Kouthoofd. And in pictures provided exclusively to CDM, we have proof that she designed the display. Talk about landing your dream job in the musical instruments industry early.

I think her creation is genius. And she probably sets some kind of record here."
