Children of Techno - Ten Years Later

Published on Jan 22, 2017 SynthMania

"Back in the 1990s I used to be a fanatic Techno Raver guy, and acquired the three classic instruments of Techno: the Roland TB-303, TR-909, and TR-808. Ten years ago in January 2007, I recorded my three children - Grace, Christian, and Vincent - playing those classic instruments. Today, ten years later, the kids and I recreated that video! The kids wore similar clothes to the ones they wore that day, my daughter still has that polar bear stuffed animal, and I even did little interviews with them, just like I did ten years ago. The only difference is that for the old video I had to bribe them with Skittles to make them stay put - now that they are teenagers they want cash! :-D"

"Monologue Wood Plate "Floral" design ( Blemished)
This particular piece has some small issues, and is priced lower than other listings.
Lower right has approx 1" area of black paint. Below Output jack.
Back side left has slight wood blemish. NOT visible from front view but, it's there none the less.

We had to check fit for screw holes repeatedly. This caused a lot of stress to the holes on the synth case. So ,We went with the double sided tape instead. (Very sticky tape)

Solid Alder, No Ply or pressed wood. ** wood is a natural product with natural variations **

Laser cut, Hand sanded and coat of clear gloss.

Anyone know if the oscillator waveforms overlapped with the Polymorph?

"Featuring a snappy 49 key, touch sensitive keyboard, pitch and modulation wheels, 2 Oscillators... with 128 waveforms, 365 drum and percussion samples, 28 voice polyphony, 7-track sequencer utilizing 16 arpeggiator types, 11-channel vocoder, built-in effects including delay, reverb, chorus and flange this instrument is super fun and inspires creativity. Released in 1998 by Quasimidi (of Rave-olution 309 fame), it is loaded with 24 knobs and a whopping 70 (light-up red) buttons... so you know it's ready to be tweaked! The sound is punchy, deep and has gritty character with a 'modulator' section and cool parameters like 'wave-macro,' 'filter overdrive,' 'random-sound' and 'overblast.' The filters are vast with 24dB and 12dB options. There is a mixer section for the 4-part drum machine and 3-part synth pattern-based sequencer."

NAMM 2017: Shear Electronics Relic-6 - New Six Voice Discrete OB-X Based Analog Desktop Synthesizer

Published on Jan 22, 2017 sonicstate

Another sleeper surprise from NAMM. Note this is the first Shear Electronics post on the site. Jacob Brashears started working on the synth at the age of 15. The Relic-6 is based on the circuitry of the 1979 Oberheim OB-X. It has touch sensitive knobs with interactive display queues. Note the active light strip that runs through the middle of it as well as the lit colored labels. It has an all analog signal path with digital control voltage modulation (digital emulation of the Curtis 3310 envelop). You can actually adjust the spread between envelopes. Two VCOs feature a Saw and Pulse wave with various width, with sync. It has the original Oberheim 12db 2-pole lowpass filter with the ability to layer two sounds. It consists of 3000 transistors, an all glass front panel, hand crafted wood sides, and aluminum metal case. Retro future Star Trek look. They are targeting $3499 and hoping to ship this Summer. Currently they are planning to make five prototypes to get out there for testing and use.

"Discrete analog extravagance.

Our voice card isn’t really dipped in solid gold. Aside from that, no expense was spared.

In our search for unparalleled sonic character, we looked to one of the most revered synthesizers ever made: The Oberheim OB-X.

We dusted off archived schematics of this 1979 behemoth and painstakingly recreated the entire signal path. Every single component of it.

Voltage-Controlled Oscillators.

Forget about DCOs, NCOs & PCM. There’s only one type of circuit that resonates with the freedom of a guitar string and the power of a live brass section.

Still, some VCOs are better than others. We’re using:
36 Resistors
12 Transistors
4 Capacitors
1 Diode
In each oscillator.

Excessive? Absolutely. But this old-school complexity creates a sonic depth that’s impossible to describe. Once you hear it, you'll never want to give it up.

Legendary State-Variable Filter.

First appearing in Oberheim’s groundbreaking SEM synth module, this voltage-controlled lowpass filter is arguably the greatest polysynth filter of all time.

The gentler 12dB/octave curve kept all the biting resonance of the 24dB Minimoog filter, but added more air and sizzle.

We built it the old-fashioned way, right down to a faithful Texas Instruments clone of the notoriously gritty RCA 3080 chip.

Back in 1974, the famous SEM filter required ultra-precise silver-mica capacitors to produce its signature resonance. Today, silver-mica capacitors have become ultra-rare. Of course, we used them anyway.

Scorching in Stereo. Old-school VCAs weren't always perfect, but they were never boring.

In the days before crystal-clear amplifier chips, subtle distortion used to color your sound whether you liked it or not.

On top of that, the earliest polysynths had knobs to manually pan individual voices for a striking three-dimensional effect.

After all the scorching texture of the oscillators and filter, our voice card’s output stage delivers the finishing blow.

And with two discrete VCAs for each voice, the stereo field is flexible, powerful, and programmable.

Envelopes with Curtis Curves.

The Curtis Electromusic CEM3310 Envelope Generator shaped control voltages for the Prophet-5, Memorymoog, and the entire Oberheim OB-series.

The original chip was discontinued in 1985, but we’ve examined authentic datasheets and recreated its distinctive curves with a 40 kHz output rate at 14-bit resolution.

The unique attack stage rose to 6.5 volts, but was truncated at 5 volts — not quite exponential, not quite linear.

Our emulation matches it perfectly.

Often, rise & fall times were glaringly inconsistent from one voice to the next.

Our ‘fatness’ parameter lets you dial up the vintage looseness when you want it, or stick with timing accuracy when you need it."

If you look at one of the side shots you can see the front panel interface is actually stuck on vs. being directly printed. According to the listing:

"This Moog Opus 3 is fully functional and was professionally serviced in November 2016. It has also been cleaned and the black foam removed. As far as cosmetics, the pictures speak for themselves. The "whiteness" on the face plate occurred from using isopropyl alcohol in an attempt to make it meticulously clean! Unfortunately it caused some of the surface paint to be removed. Everything is still viewable, however, and it doesn't affect the functionality."

"A self modulating patch based around the Corsynth Dual Looping Envelope. The output of each envelope affects the rise/fall of the other.

Envelope 1 controls the Synthcube SEM filter and the VCA, while envelope 2 controls the timbre of the Braids module.

The combined output of Envelopes 1 + 2 along with a randomized LFO modulates the delay time of the Strymon El Capistan pedal.

Random sample and hold CV is applied to the Braids module affecting the pitch and harmonic ratio.

And spring reverb from the TC Hall of Fame pedal.

OBMX sound design2017 for next Deep Forest album (2017)

Published on Jan 22, 2017 Deep Forest

"Here are a couple of new sounds I designed for the upcoming next album (2017). Lot of people asked me about the OBMX, it's a fantastic pure analog synthesizer designed by Don Buchla. This machine has 8 voices (will grow to 12 voices), a 24db low pass filter type (Moog) and a 12db Oberheim type filter ( low, band, hipass). 4 multistage env (loopable), 3 lfo's, and a very important matrix modulation. All the magic is in the matrix...My favorite Oberheim so far... ( yes I know what people said... I know about OBX, OBXa, OB8, Matrix 12...) but this one remain my favorite (at least for my music).
Listen with headphone or good speakers !
Enjoy !"

Generative Music - part IV

Published on Jan 22, 2017 Gibran Curtiss

"Another great step forward to my generetive music project.

These are the 2 major changes in project:

a)the first 3 videos I've made, the Arduino was connected to a laptop by MIDI. Now 2 full 5V CV OUTs available (3 at the moment I'm writing this) :-) provided by a DAC MCP4725

b)improvement into evolution algorithm allowing to choose to evolute or not each parameter individually. This way we can let the machine evolute by itself and then step in anytime to control the evolution.

Finally the unit is connected to a real modular synth!!! I'm very very really happy!!!!!!!!.

This video is a very simple path:

-one CV to a Qu-Bit Chord
-another CV to 4MS Spectral Multiband Resonator.

Thank you for watch"
