Ashen - Oberheim OB MX

Published on Jan 28, 2017 100 Things I Do

"The OB-MX, possibly one of the most misunderstood synths of all time. While it seems to promise the sounds of the Moog and the Oberheim SEM it does not deliver that hardly at all. The filters are something along the line of but not quite the same as, application is similar to, the filters they are named after.

This made a lot of people angry and disappointed back in 1994. The Brain child of the chap that owned Oberheim at the time during its transition to Gibson. It wasn't until Don Buchla did a major redesign this machine made it to market. The story goes that Don specified very particular types of capacitors and the company sometimes followed instruction, sometimes just used what ever they had in the parts bin that week.

They even changed the VCA' chips on occasion! Don was not one to suffer people not following his instruction and made his objections quite well known. Most of this impacted the stability and application of the VCA. Why Don went to work for another big music company after the CBS issues I do not know.

With all this in mind, if you are looking for something that sounds like a mix between an OB-8, Matrix 12, CS-80 and Prophet 5 you might enjoy it. Éric Mouquet (Deep Forest) Loves his and just released a video of a sounds he has created for his new upcoming album (well worth a watch). Like many things Don created, if you don't apply and commit yourself to the use and headspace of the device, you don't get much out of it! All the sounds were created on the OB-MX using only delays and reverbs."

Cool warning inscribed on the back:

"There are thousands of parts inside but none are user serviceable, so kindly refrain from removing the covers. Do not take the OBMx swimming or play it in the rain. Custom designed for Oberheim by Don Buchla. Manufactured by Oberheim, Oakland, California"

"The Voyetra-8 (Voyetra-Eight) is an eight voice polyphonic analog synthesizer. Released in 1982 by Octave-Plateau Electronics (later renamed Voyetra and still later merged with Turtle Beach Systems to become Voyetra Turtle Beach, Inc.), it was one of the first analog programmable synthesizers to be rack-mountable and remains one of the most flexible digitally controlled analog synthesizers."

Modular Session 01: Nord Modular G2 Demo & Eurorack

Published on Jan 28, 2017 LA 84

"A generative patch that combines the Nord Modular G2 Demo with Eurorack.

The G2 patch contains 4 sine oscillators which are independently, randomly triggered and tuned (using quantisers). The mixed output is sent to the Odio module via USB. The Eurorack system is used for further processing. The result is recorded using the inputs on the Odio module.

Rheyne - Sequenced Jam #17 (Make Noise Eurorack, Moog Mother-32)

Published on Jan 28, 2017 Rheyne

"Recorded using Moog Mother-32 (x3) and Make Noise modules. First experiment with the Make Noise Tempi. All notes and modulations are coming from the synths and modules, no outside MIDI or DAW is being used here. Delay is from a Roland Demora and reverb is from a Strymon BigSky. Audio is straight from the mixer."

Waldorf Wave ambient Pads design.

Published on Jan 28, 2017 Deep Forest

"Some pads I designed for my next project, mostly ambient orchestral flavour. The wavetables I use are based on PPG2.2 and Korg WS. I especialy like the grainy sound of these wavetables, the analog filter is really amazing. The reverb is controlled by the Wave Aux modulated by velocity or modwheel."

"She's a Tonus Arp (V2600p 2.0) so has great 4027 VCOs and the 4012 "Moog" ladder filter.
This Synth has it all and it is a dream to have owned it.

ABSOLUTLEY complete. Comes with original keyboard, patch cables, owner's manual and v rare suggested patches booklet.

Cosmetics are great and there are no horrors and though the case does show some patina (this is an old synth!) there is no peeling tolex or dented wood etc etc. She looks good!

Functionality is virtually perfect minus scratchy reverb tank sliders and a loose Cinch Jones. (Entire new Reverb tank is only $40 and the Cinch Jones are known to oxidize, which is an easy fix with some cleaner)."

Ben Hovey :: Sally Sparks :: Chris Stack :: Improvisation 12/13/16

Published on Jan 28, 2017 experimentalsynth

"This is the first time Ben played with Sally and me and things just seemed to gel right away. Since I was mostly handling sequencing and background textures, I was able to shoot a bit of video and stills while we were playing. Instruments and tools used include: trumpet, Haken Continuum, (virtual) piano and Rhodes, Ableton, DSI Pro 2, Moog Voyager, Make Noise Shared System, Eventide H9, Borderlands, Animoog and probably a few other things that I've forgotten or was not aware of. I particularly enjoy how Sally's brassy Continuum timbres intertwine with and compliment Ben's trumpet work. And when you hear trumpet and Rhodes happening at the same time, it's because Ben was playing them at the same time. No overdubs here. All recorded live. An incredibly enjoyable musical experience that I hope we can soon repeat. - Chris Stack"

"For sale is my Sequential Circuits Multitrak. This is a rare classic vintage synthesizer and in my opinion very underrated, much better than the more readily found Sixtrak. It has a awesome analog sound along with a cool built in arpeggiator & sequencer. Awesome for pads but also gets very beefy in mono-stack mode. This might be the nicest Multitrak you will find. It's in super MINTY shape, even the bottom is almost perfect. It has custom wood sides and looks and plays perfectly. Includes power supply. Be sure to check out the detailed pictures to make sure you like it. Don't miss out on this awesome SCI synth!"

Mint Roland TB-303 SN 220800 with Original Box & Bag

via this auction

"For sale is a rare Roland TB303. It's in MINT shape and fully functional. Includes original box, manual, quick start card, warranty registration, carry case bag (also in excellent shape) and power supply (not pictured but one will be included). This unit looks like it was kept in storage for most of its life and hardly ever used, as there is minimal signs of use or wear. All the knobs turn smoothly, scratch free and buttons are all triggering properly. Super hard to find a 303 that performs are perfectly as this one. You won't have any issues with buttons double triggering or requiring firm presses, programming on this is a breeze. This one has been clearly babied over the years and it shows. No cracks, chips, dings or worn our corners like you find on most 303s. No wear around the knobs which shows it hasn't been used for intense filter or knob twisting action. No rust or grime or mildew funky smells either. Even the bottom looks perfect. I only found some very very minor signs of wear which was lightly from rubbing again the case while sitting in the box. Check out the detailed pictures below to make sure you like it. The battery compartment is clean, no battery leakage anywhere. One of the nicest 303 sets I've seen for sale in a while. The 303 is a must have for acid, techno, dance, electronic, hiphop and more. Especially awesome when paired up with a TR606, TR909 or TR808. Don't miss out on this classic synth!"

Reverse Keys KORG Poly 800 Synthesizer w/ Mods

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This Poly 800 has the reversed keys, plus the following modifications:

Potentiometer for filter cutoff frequency
Potentiometer for filter resonance amount
Filter slope switch (12 or 24 dB / octave)
Switch to toggle FM on/off
Potentiometer for FM amount

These additions extend the synth's range to far beyond a normal Poly 800 (although it can be used without the mods by turning cutoff to max, resonance to min, selecting 24 dB / octave and switching 'FM' to off). The FM can add harmonic overtones, or extreme distortion at higher amounts. Care should be taken with the resonance amount as, after about 75%, 'feedback' can occur quite suddenly (and loudly). Therefore, running the instrument through a compressor is recommended."

Intelijel Metropolis and Atlantis live setup

Published on Jan 28, 2017 Ziad Sarrouh

"This is a quick jam I made to test the Metropolis and the Atlantis in a live performance situation. The setup would consist of these two modules in addition to an Aira Demora for delay and Arturia Drumbrute.
The Metropolis is receiving its clock input from the Drumbrute's metronome out and sending CV and Gate to the Atlantis. The audio is then routed through the Demora's USB port into the Aira MX-1.
The Metropolis is really great for live use, and has a few tricks I found very handy. For example, it can receive two modulation signals to affect a wide choice of parameters through it's aux A and B. I like to send a sine wave to control the octave of the pattern and a square wave for the numbers of steps and use these when I want to create variations.
The Atlantis is also extremely handy for live use. The fact that it is mostly self contained is also very practical since most of the usual patching is already made internally, allowing me to focus on live tweaking.
All in all, this is a setup I can safely take to the road with me, fits in one 104HP case and is extremely portable.
I'll make another video featuring all the elements and how I integrate them in my workflow."
