Novation UltraNova Contest Update - We Have a Winner!

Hi everyone! I just wanted to let you all know that we have a winner for the UltraNova contest! Apologies for the delay in the announcement. The contest ended on January 19th, just before we were all hit by the NAMM storm. I want to thank everyone who entered. Novation tells me this was one of their best contests yet, with over 1600 entries! Go MATRIXSYNTH! :) Novation promoted the contest on their social channels, while I promoted it here on MATRIXSYNTH. That said, I am extremely happy to announce that the winner of the contest is a reader of the site! The winner does wish to remain anonymous, which I totally understand and respect, being the anonymous mr. matrix myself. :)

I want to thank Novation for hosting the contest and giving a chance for my readers to win a free Novation UltraNova.  BTW, if you haven't already, be sure to check out my lengthy UltraNova review here. Novation offered to host the contest as a follow-up to the review.

Thank you Novation, and thank you to everyone who participated!

Polytik Synths Now On Kickstarter

Published on Jan 31, 2017 Polytik Synths

You might remember the previous posts on Polytik here and here. This is a project from Dirty Electronics/Mute Synth & Jack Featherstone. Below are some additional details captured for the archives, via the Kickstarter campaign here.

"Polytik is a collection of beautifully designed hand-held synth modules. Born out of a DIY ethos and the maker community, they have been crafted into something very different – a series of beautifully designed objects in their own right. We have used open-source hardware and software and encourage users to make new modules and hacks."

Playlist:

Polytik designers Jack Featherstone and John Richards in conversation
Polytik Synths x Jas Shaw

"The brainchild of John Richards and Jack Featherstone in collaboration with Artists & Engineers, these hybrid analogue/digital devices can produce a palette of sounds ranging from angular rhythmic sequences to abstract noise, pads and drones. The synths are designed to be tactile, to be held and touched when playing.

Polytik comprises four separate, colour-coded, battery powered modules. Every Polytik system needs a Core module and at least one sound module. The sound modules connect to the core with ribbon cables, these carry audio and control data to connect the system together giving you a single audio output for all modules. You can have up to three sound modules connected at one time.

The Starter Pack comprises a Core module and a Combi module, which we think is a really good way to start using Polytik.

"Oh Morpheus, you're awesome ... don't change a thing! :)

Stupidity aside Morpheus is killer. A really impressive bit of kit that I honestly feel could offer something for everyone depending on what you're looking to do. There's so many potential applications with input sources a such a wide range of filters and their 3 controls. The on board sequencer can be vast and equally powerful.

Here's the noise video [posted here] I've mentioned at several points showing more filter modes shaping noise. As noise (white noise at least) by nature is broadband it shows off the filters well."

Ops Modular Synthesizer for iOS

Published on Jan 31, 2017 Jonathan Mackenzie

"Getting started with Ops, an easy to use modular synthesiser for iPad & iPhone."

iTunes: Ops - Jonathan Mackenzie

iTunes: Ops - Jonathan Mackenzie

"Ops is a modular synthesiser designed to make it easy to create and explore sound interactively with a touch screen. Ops does away with patch cords, instead using a system of connected blocks with a clear signal flow.

The blocks, called ops, are joined together into structures by dragging and dropping them on screen. Structures can easily be copied and varied to build-up rich, interesting results.

There are ops to perform a wide range of functions, including interaction, signal generation, effects processing, control, audio input, MIDI input, and pitch and rhythm manipulation."

SSF Entity Bass Drum Synth - Waveform Processing

Published on Jan 31, 2017 SteadyStateFate

"The Entity Bass Drum Synthesizer can be used as a waveform processor as well. This is accomplished by patching a waveform from a VCO into the TRIGGER input on the Entity BDS.

The controls will now alter the texture and harmonic content of the resultant sound. This demo shows some examples of how the controls affect the sound. Vowel-y filter and wave-folder style affects can be achieved in this manner.

Another entity is used to make the kick drum sound for effect - and the duck output from the kick is patched into the processor to duck the output volume."

Moog Music: Sonic Origins | Russell E.L. Butler

Published on Jan 31, 2017 Moog Music Inc

An inspiring video from Moog Music featuring Rusell E.L. Butler.
Side note: I'm truly humbled and honored to have Russell as a supporting member of the site, as well as Moog Music as a sponsor on the right.

"Today we debut 'Sonic Origins', a new video series that explores the origins of creativity and seeks to unearth the underlying elements of artistic identity. The series kicks off with Oakland-based producer Russell E.L. Butler.

Techno-rhythmic emancipator Russell E.L. Butler has a lot on their mind: while dealing with the loss of gear and more importantly some dear friends in the Oakland Ghost Ship fire, they are also releasing a new EP and celebrating their recent addition to Moogfest 2017. Here, Butler opens up about taking inspiration from their Bermudan roots, connecting with one's various identity consciousnesses, and, ultimately, music as self-liberation.

For the filming of the first Sonic Origins, Russell composed a hard hitting improvised modular session titled 'Sirens From a Distance' using four Mother-32s, a Make Noise 0-Coast and more.

Yamaha CS80 - Square Wave Modulation & Glissando...

Published on Jan 31, 2017 noddyspuncture

"Using square wave modulation - mainly on the VCA but also a little to the filter... touch settings also add some LFO speed and filter level. There's quite a bit of Glissando as well which is boosted at the end for the sound effects. *Note: This will sound the best on headphones... some of it goes pretty low...!"

Super nice pics via this auction

"If you are looking at this, wise viewer, you already know what awaits; one of the most incredible polyphonic analog synthesizers ever created since the dawn of man and music. It would, in fact, not be too bold to state that this Rhodes Chroma Polaris completely embodies the timeless, incredibly sought-after sound of the 80s and beyond. From lush pads to stabbing leads, ringing pulse-modulated keys and shimmering textures, the Chroma Polaris was the absolute cutting edge of analog synthesizer technology at the time of its release in 1984. Any musician, with the means at their disposal, would be considered naught but addlebrained fools, to neglect bringing every resource to bear in acquiring this incredible machine with all due haste.

"Submitted for your approval is the E-mu systems SP-12 Sampling Percussion unit. If you know me, you know I love these. I found this one bummy and busted. I took it to Forat and after many repairs. He:

Repaired boot problem.
Replaced broken output 4 jack.
Replaced incorrect fuse with a proper one.
Replaced battery.
Completely refurbished all pads and replaced broken or missing parts.
Completely refurbished all Function buttons.
Sliders are jumpy and very sticky, installed 8 brand new sliders.
A/D converter offset is totally wrong, ran diagnostics and calibrated offsets.
Tightened transformer.
Cleaned master volume, click and sample input pots.

This unit is a sparkling 30 year guaranteed worker. Cosmetically it has some issues. There is a black case instead of the normal grey, it looks like someone bought an sp1200 and then modded the sp12 panels over it. The screen has a cover on it, which is not the same as I being on other units. This unit works great though, sliders and buttons are immaculate, this is the turbo model with os 2.4 (See demo). It has 5 seconds sample time. The screen is brighter than ones I've had in the past, but I don't think it was replaced. This unit is a trooper, it looks like it was serviced at rogue music years ago and for being older than me it's still working just as well."

"This unit is in excellent cosmetic condition, I have raised the shadow level on all these images so you can see the quality of the black plastic and the panel fascia.

Here are the list of the very few marks on this 15 year old instrument: - some marks are to be expected, it is used.

The LCD, Ribbon and laminate panel are perfect.

The metal front and back chassis are near pefect, only a slight mark by the IEC power outlet (as to be expected where plugs are plugged in and out) and there is a small chip on the white paint of the E of the Alesis.

The plastic side cheaks are in excellent condition, these take a real beating (why Alesis used plastic and not wood I don't know, I guess cost-cutting!), naturally there are a few small marks but this is one of the best examples I have seen, and I have owned 3 units over the years!"

Live Techno SynthPop Hybrid - Novation & Elektron Synths

Published on Jan 30, 2017 Matt Greer

"A live synthesizer performance using an Elektron Monomachine, a Novation Circuit and the Bass Station 2.

So, this is the 4th track I've developed for my winter gigs. It is a modified version of a track I've done in the past. This time I've sped it up and lengthened the middle, techno session a bit.

Initially I wanted to write all brand new music for my performances but there just isn't time. Regardless, I've never played this one out so it's still getting a stage debut in a couple of weeks.

There are a couple spots where I get a tad sloppy with the BS2 so I'll have to refine that in the practice stage.

Here's the original that this is based on:" posted here.
