Patch Notes #33 - For Mojo

Published on May 23, 2017 Voltage Control Lab

"Yesterday, I had to make the difficult decision to put my sweet kitty of 18 1/2 years to sleep. This is dedicated to Mojo, the best friend and synth cat I could have wished for.

Make Noise Pressure Points is controlling the chord quality on the Music Thing Chord Organ, which is routed through one channel of Mutable Instruments Clouds and out to the mixer.

Make Noise Rene is controlling the pitch on Mutable Instruments Braids, which is routed through Ripples and on to the other channel on Clouds. Make Noise Tempi is clocking the Moffenzeef Deviant which is lightly randomizing the color control in Braids.

So sad. Condolences to Voltage Control Lab. This is a beautiful tribute. It goes unsaid how much pets mean to us, and how much they become part of us. When we lose them, we lose part of ourselves. The best ones always have your back. I wish we could all be more like our pets.

Jomox Sunsyn Patches

Published on May 23, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"The Jomox Sunsyn is a peculiar but formidable synthesizer. With eight voices with two analog oscillators each, the Sunsyn is capable of everything from wispy ethereal pads to unreal, destructive basslines. Among its more peculiar features are two 'Ramp Controlled Oscillators,' basically short wavetables that you can modulate with the same flexibility and reliability of tracking as an analog VCO. Various means of animating these RCOs are part of what gives the Sunsyn its unique sound: something between a PPG Wave and any number of classic monosynths. The other remarkable feature is its filter section: with four individually addressable poles, an enormous number of filter topologies can be emulated, for everything from acid squelch to fizzy bandpass to Moog-like thump. Here, we explore some of the different types of sounds the Sunsyn does well: analog keys, pads, and odd, digital glitchy things that resist labeling."

New Documentary: SUBOTNICK - Portrait of an Electronic Music Pioneer

"An upcoming, official bio-doc on electronic music pioneer, Morton Subotnick. Fundraising NOW on IndieGoGo (from May 23 - June 21, 2017): http://igg.me/at/subotnickfilm

Waveshaper Media, the makers of 2014's acclaimed modular synthesizer documentary 'I Dream Of Wires,' is excited to announce that production is now underway for a new, official bio-documentary about revered avant-garde music composer, and electronic music pioneer, Morton Subotnick. Through a series of candid interviews and illuminating conversations with key figures from his past and present, "Subotnick" will provide an overview of this fascinating composer’s rich life and uncompromising career."

Note Waveshaper is still working on the upcoming documentary on Bob Moog, Electronic Voyager. The following are some details on SUBOTNICK captured for the archives.

"2017 is a milestone year for revered avant-garde music composer, and electronic music pioneer, Morton Subotnick. It not only marks the 50th anniversary of his iconic 1967 album “Silver Apples of the Moon,” but also sees the premiere of “Crowds and Power,” a new multi-media tone poem for voice, electronic sound, and live imagery, commissioned by NYC’s Lincoln Center, and premiering there in July.

Novation // Circuit 1.5 Update

Uploaded on May 18, 2017 NovationTV

"Novation’s new version of Circuit firmware, Version 1.5, has been released for Circuit.

The new version of Circuit firmware feels much more creative. Circuit 1.5 focusses on increased expression of sequences and closer representation of live-recorded parts. It also enables instant preview of patches, making sound selection quicker and easier while jamming.

There are several features that are distinct improvements. The first is Fractional Gate: Novation has given the Gate sequencer six times more precision per step. Version 1.5 enables staccato steps to be programmed per-step and increases variance in melody creation.

The improved gate functionality makes it a great choice as a sequencer to drive a modular system, as well as it having two inbuilt synth engines (six-voice), and a sampler built-in.

Synth Patch Preview means that anyone can listen to synth patches directly from the selection view: poly patches play the root, third and fifth notes of the current scale and key, while mono patches play the root note.

Circuit 1.5 also features MIDI CC Send and Receive, which means MIDI CC data can be turned on or off to prevent any unwanted parameter changes. Circuit Mono Station also comes with MIDI CC Send and Receive, so what MIDI information is shared between both devices can be chosen.

The firmware is available via Components and Components Standalone on Mac or PC."

Sound Semiconductor SSI2144 VCF Now Available in Single Quantities at DSP Synthesizers

via DSP Synthesizers

"The SSI2144 reprises the SSM2044 of legacy chipmaker

Solid State Microtechnology, which many believe to be the best-sounding analog synthesis filter IC ever produced.

Based on Dave Rossum’s patented classic improved ladder topology, the SSI2144 allows rich tonal characteristics that showcase the very best attributes of subtractive synthesis.

The SSI2144 uses the same internal circuit as the SSM2044 but in a SSOP-16 package.

It is now available at DSP Synthesizers in single quantities for DIY projects.

There is also an adapter PCB for converting it to a DIP-16 SSM2044 replacement to upgrade or repair vintage synthesizers."

The will be performances as well of course. Full details here.

"Time to move outside our comfort zone…
In a nod towards the artistic “happenings” and gatherings of the 1960s, the Library of Trinity College Dublin presents three nights of poets, music, sound effects, psychedelic projections and swirling quadraphonic sound in the Berkeley Library.

Curated by Richard Duckworth of the Department of Music, these events link the fifty years since the Moog synth was made commercially available with the opening of the Berkeley Library, and mark a radical departure from our usual events…

The nights have at their heart the classic Moog System 55 synthesiser – in Dublin as part of an upcoming Science Gallery exhibition – and we are very grateful to Paul Smith/Moog Sound Lab UK for its use. Each night will feature a 'Synth Petting Zoo' to get up close and personal with the rig."

Patch Base for iPad Adds Editors for 4 Vintage Roland Synths

iTunes: Patch Base - Coffeeshopped LLC

Roland synths: JV-2080, JV-1080, XP-80, XP-60

"Patch Base 2.6 is available today, bringing editors for 4 Roland synths: JV-2080, JV-1080, XP-80, and XP-60. These synths were incredibly popular in the 90's, and have a lot of sounds that you'll recognize, just scrolling through the presets. According to Wikipedia, "The JV-1080 has been used on more recordings than any other module in history." And according to Legowelt, "If you program [the JV-2080], you can get some really freaky sounds out of it." Now with Patch Base, you can take these old machines to new (freaky) places.

Support for each synth is divided into two editors. The "Patch" editor is the standard synth voice editor, giving access to all voice parameters as well as copy/paste for envelopes and "Tones" (more on this below). The "Rhythm" editor is the drum kit editor, where you can create a kit with 64 different sounds in it, and shape each sound with pitch, filter, and amp envelopes.

Full support for each synth is available as an In-App Purchase, and the purchase of support for a synth unlocks both the Patch and Rhythm editors. For the next few days, these new editors are all 50% off. So check them out!"

VIRTUAL Yamaha DX-7 / DX-7II Programmer for Logic

The editor is available on eBay here, or Reverb here.

"This software is a virtual synthesizer programmer for use with any 6-operator Yamaha FM Synthesizer. Designed originally for the DX-7 or DX-7II series, it can also be used with any other 6-operator Yamaha synth - but is only compatible at the VOICE level. Therefore on a synth like the TX-802, you can edit the individual 6-operator FM sound of any one voice, but not the Multi setups involving multiple voices.

The editor lives in a software environment within the APPLE LOGIC audio/sequencer program (formerly Emagic Logic). To use this software you MUST have a valid copy of LOGIC on your computer (see below) as well as a MIDI interface which connects your computer via MIDI cable to your hardware synthesizer. This software can NOT be used as a stand alone application under any circumstances. It is not a plug-in and is not compatible with VST, Ableton, AU or any other plug-in format.

Upon purchase, you will ultimately receive a ZIP archive of the editor you purchased for Logic.UNZIP this archive and you will have a choice of LOGIC song documents you can now open in the Logic program, either original DX-7 or DX-7II version. In general, please select the version that more closely resembles your particular model. With first generation FM synths like the DX-1, DX-5, TX-7 and TX816 use the DX-7 version - and for the DX-7S and TX-802 you should use the DX-7II version.

"You are looking at an original Arp Pro Soloist. One of the first synthesizers to come out in the early 70's. About as vintage as it gets. This has been owned by my family since it was new. My sister played this in the 70's at our church. (see the original vendor sticker from Wichita. KS.) Or course it was been in storage for 30 + years. It is missing the bottom cover, and both of the wooden sides are a little loose like they might be missing a screw. I plugged it in and the red light on the on/off switch did not light up. I did not go any further to see how much does or does not work. I'm sure a person could service this and get it back up and running great."
