Gecho - Making of Synth (Assembly Machines)

Published on May 30, 2017 Gecho Loopsynth

"Production line that makes Gechos, yay!

The soundtrack in this video is a raw recording of the output (no post-processing).

Factory noises from the original video have been fed to "guitar pickups" input and altered by series of Gecho's programmatically controlled high-pass filters (as opposed to low-pass demonstrated in previous videos), with resonance and arpeggiator triggered by IR sensors (as usual). Signal is wrapped in a loop of variable delay (you can hear it changing few times during the video). Another new function is possibility of feeding a sampled sound into the filters, which is good for parts where external signal is not present (here it's the quiet sound of water at the very end).

Modular Ambient Chords

Published on May 30, 2017 Jörg Schaaf

Jörg Schaaf is the man behind Radikal Technologies.

"Modular Ambient Chords
I created a patch with the following modules: A-155 sequencer, A-147-2 VCDLFO, A-140 ADSR, RT-311 Swarm Oscillator, RT-451 Dual Multimode Filter and the RT-1701 'EFFEXX' Multi FX processor. I was so surprised by these floating ambient tones that I forgot to check the ISO settings of my DSLR camera. As a result, I received a noisy video footage. It really looked bad. So I decided to replace that footage with some Landschaftspark clips - which are not really much better. Anyway. It's all about that modular patch. So just close your eyes and listen to the modular ambient patch.
What the patch does: I have two audio signal sources. One audio signal is the output of the envelope generator and one signal is a chord from the swarm oscillator. These signals are fed into the inputs of the RT-451 Multimode filter. The outputs of the filter are fed into the EFFEXX Multi FX unit. The envelope signal source is triggered by the LFO. The LFO also triggers the step sequencer. The control voltages of the step sequencer control the cutoff frequency of both filters, the delay tuning of the EFFEXX string filter and the pitch of the swarm oscillator. I am changing the following parameters during the performance:
The reverb level.
The string filter frequency.
The modulation depth and speed of the string filter delay time.
The delay feedback.
The cutoff frequencies of the multimode filter.
The speed of the LFO.
I hope, you enjoy this litte ambient track."

Modular Synth - Self Generating Melodic Drone Sequence

Published on May 30, 2017 isvisible / isinvisible

"Not much to see in this vid, but I think the patch sounds quite nice.

It's all being controlled by the Doepfer A-143-4 Quad VCLFO in LFO mode.
It's gates (square waves) and sines are triggering or shaping envelopes, filters, other lfo's, a sequencer and the Livewire 'Chaos Computer, which in turn is cv-ing the A-143-4.
So with absolutely no external influence it'll run for (think of a very, very long time because I can't do the maths) without having the same sonic outcome etc, even though it's all based on a single 8 step sequence.

Audio from 4 Doepfer A-110's and Mutable Instruments Elements, Braids and Rings."

Native Instruments Introduces THRILL for KONTAKT 5

THRILL Walkthrough

Published on May 30, 2017 Native Instruments

"Native Instruments releases THRILL – a one-of-a-kind instrument for playing a wide range of cinematic, spine-chilling scores – in real time.

May 30, 2017, Berlin – Native Instruments today released THRILL, a ground-breaking new instrument that enables the introduction of terrifying live scores to movies, games, sound installations, or theater productions.

THRILL is the first instrument to combine the epic power of an orchestra with the chilling depth of expert sound design, house them within a simple performance-driven interface, and place them into the hands of a single player.

Using THRILL, a single person could perform the terrifying string tone clusters from The Shining, as Jack Torrance rampages around Overlook Hotel. An aspiring young filmmaker could single-handedly play all of Arrival’s stomach-churning bass drones in just one take.

The all-original 30 GB sound library is taken from 963 source sounds, including orchestral recordings and hybrid sound-design based on ambiences, custom-built instruments, voices, pitched metal, synthesized drones, and more.

Central to THRILL is an X-Y control for modulating effects and morphing between sounds. This control offers composers and sound designers something completely new – the ability to design and play complex cinematic textures and builds in real time. Simple and intuitive to use, the control blends between sound sources, effects, the number of sonic layers, general intensity, and more, depending on the preset being used. This X-Y modulator lends itself to trackpad, tablet, or even smartphone control (via TouchOSC), allowing an unprecedented level of sound-to-action interaction.

THRILL also comes with the most powerful tone cluster designer ever offered in a virtual instrument. Tone clusters are a special kind of chord, containing at least three adjacent notes, and are one of the staple tools for generating fear and tension in any audience. THRILL offers 250+ diverse and editable cluster sound and voicing presets, using the many types of pitched sounds in the THRILL library, such as strings and horns. Tone clusters can also be built from scratch, with up to eight independently editable and modulatable voices.

THRILL was created in collaboration with sound master Uli Baronowsky of Galaxy Instruments. Already a trusted NI partner, known for the acclaimed RISE & HIT and UNA CORDA, Uli now brings his proven mastery of high-quality sampling, sound reinforcement, and innovative control to THRILL.

THRILL runs in KONTAKT 5 and the free KONTAKT 5 PLAYER, and is available at the NI Online Shop for €299 / $299 / £239 / ¥ 37 800 / AU$ 439"

TECHNICS SX-WSA1R RACK SYNTHESIZER

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

Note there were three physical modeling synth engines, one from Yamaha, one from Korg, and one from Technics. They were all different. The auction description mentions Yamaha, but Korg of course had the monophonic Prophecy and the polyphonic Z1.

"The super rare TECHNICS SX-WSA1R rack mount digital synthesizer. Unobtainium in rack format. A MASSIVELY POLYPHONIC synth engine that is unique in the world of sound generation and sound design; a unique sound that can only also be found in the legendary polyphonic Yamaha VP1 (of with Yamaha made three (3) for astronomical prices), and the very limited 2-voice Yamaha VL1.

The SX-WSA1R is effectively the only alternative to access the POLYPHONIC sound generating capabilities of the fabled Yamaha VP1.

The technology to POLYPHONICALLY cross a horn section with the envelope properties of a plucked string instrument. From huge swirling pads to otherworldly leads, the sound design capabilities of this instrument simply have not been duplicated. Includes very usable onboard effects, a second set of MIDI IN/OUT/THRUs, and a second set of stereo (or dual mono) outs.

The keyboard version of the SX-WSA1 is fairly rare. But the rack version is, like the Ensoniq Fizmo rack and Wersi EX-20 (rack version of Stage Performer MK I), simply unobtainium. Technics made only about 100 of them, and almost all for the UK market."

YAMAHA FS1R RACK SYNTHESIZER SN PI01096

via this auction

"Released for only one year, 1998, only a few hundred were sold. A POLYPHONIC synth engine that is unique in the world of sound generation and sound design; a unique sound that can only be found here. Unique Formant + FM sound engine technology that results in staggeringly unique sounds. Nothing else sounds like the FS1R.

Plus the bonus of being able to load legacy DX1, DX5 and DX7 programs and then either play them or modify them.

The technology to POLYPHONICALLY cross "traditional" FM and other synth sounds with Formant synthesis (think human vowel sounds) to create a pad with the envelope properties of the human voice. From huge swirling pads to otherworldly leads, the sound design capabilities of this instrument simply have not been duplicated. Includes very usable onboard effects, MIDI IN/OUT/THRUs, and a second set of stereo (or dual mono) outs."

RK-002 Polyphony/PolyMUX on the Volca Sample

Published on May 30, 2017 Retrokits

"As of RK-002 Volca Sample firmware v47+ you can now use chromatic and polyphonic play on the volca sample!

In earlier firmwares it was already possible to set one specific channel to respond to MIDI keys and play a melody; MIDI Program Change messages 1-10 would fix a volca sample channel to chromatic play but with our new firmware this has been expanded:

Now Program Change 11-19 will reserve the amount of channels used for polyphonic (and chromatic) play.
The RK-002 will evenly divide pressed keys across the reserved channels. It's comparable to the PolyMUX implementation we did on the RK-002 Volca FM firmware

An example:
Sending Program Change 13 will reserve the 1st three Volca Sample channels for polyphony. Pressing a chord will trigger these three channels. If you set the same sample to all these channels you will have a bit of a lo-fi sample player.
Volca Sample MIDI parameter changes are sent to all reserved channels so you can change multiple channel sound properties at once (e.g. a mapped filter value on the modulation wheel will affect all polymuxed channels).

Mind you - the volca sample can normally not play samples chromatically, nor does it respond to note off-messages. The way we achieved this is a pure hack. Best playing range is about 2 octaves and sometimes sounds are a bit out of tune.

Having this said: It is again more loads of fun with the Volca Sample!

Some tips:
* Pan the channels a bit differently
* set loop points (or even map sample start on velocity)
* reverse play
* play with reverb.
* change samples across PolyMUX channels

... and... use the internal sequencer to also trigger the PolyMUXed channels. This way playing keys can tune the affected channels instantly to the correct pitch. Your volca sample sequencer can be used to program a 16 step arpeggiator like this."

3x Microbraids Demo Test

Published on May 30, 2017 karlmarxstadt

"This is a quick stoic rythmic improvistation using 3 DIY 'Microbraids' oscillator modules.

The patch is very reduced, but shows some of the possibilities of using braids for percussion, chords and ... well... more percussion :)

Units in the patch:
-Verbos Multistage as Sequencer Triggering all three Modules,
as well as sequencing CV inputs on #1 and #2
-Slight attenuation of CV via Pittsburgh Mixer,
-Audio from all 3 Braids gets mixed into a L1 Mixer and then fed into the Schippmann filter, just to soften the timbre.

Line recording audio with no additional effects.

The module on the left uses a blue OLED display, the two on the right are in white.

I have a friends who builds these. Let him know what you think, if you have any questions, let me know."

Futureretro Transient Now Shipping

Published on May 30, 2017 FutureRetroSynths

"May 30th 2017, Futureretro release the Transient drum module."

Futureretro Transient

"The Transient takes a different approach to generating drum sounds, and the results it produces are really quite unique.

More than 400 samples are the basis of sound in the Transient. These samples include sounds from classic drum machines as well as modern drum and percussion sounds from the XS and UDS (an unreleased product of ours).
The voice architecture in the Transient is unique in that it allows plain old samples to really come to life, and sound natural with variations, and response to dynamics and other control voltages.

Although designed to recreate single drum instrument voices, the Transient can sound as though entire beats or loops are being generated. More than just a sample playback module, the Transient really is a well featured drum voice synthesizer, including two sample voices, loads of AM/Ring/Sample/CV modulation possibilities, voice crossfader, mixers, dynamics and multimode filter sections, and even digital effects.

The Transient comes loaded with more than 250 Preset instruments to get users going immediately, and provides 40 User locations to store custom Instrument settings to."

Sequentix Cirklon Sequencing Roland TB303 with Devil Fish Mod

Published on May 30, 2017 Meta Function

"In this video, Meta Function demonstrate sequencing a Roland TB303 with the Devil Fish mod via the Sequentix Cirklon.

The Cirklon is arguably the most intuitive and sturdy hardware sequencer ever made. It features five ports of MIDI I/O, four virtual USB ports and via the CVIO beak out box (BOB), sixteen CV and eight gate outputs. It has an incredibly tight clock and works great as the center of any electronic music based studio.

In this video the Fish receives note pitch and gate over CV/gate via the BOB. CV out 3 is connected to Accent in the Fish, with CV out 4 connect to Slide in. Inside the P3 pattern driving the Fish, Aux A is routed to CC 1 and Aux B is routed to CC 2, which in turn are routed within the Cirklon's CVIO Config menu to drive CV out 3 and 4 respectively. Whenever Aux A/B is over a value of 64, the measure features an accent/slide. A one bar pattern is created on the fly and slides and accents are added. Pattern direction modes are manipulated then drums from an Elektron Analog Rhytm are edited via a CK track. The one bar P3 Fish pattern is doubled and edited and transpose and force to scales modes are manipulated. Note measures are ganged/unganged and note lengths are tweaked. Finally the timebase is adjusted.

Audio recorded via Calrec S2 console and SSL convertors. All dry, no FX, EQ or compression. The only post production performed was normalization.

Watch at 1080p with good quality audio monitoring for the best experience.

Meta Function developed the Max For Live synthesizer, the Wave Junction in partnership with Sonicstate.com. A four voice paraphonic synth with 2 multi-mode osc, three multi-mode filters, 5 LFOs, 5 Envs and a 12 slot modulation matrix.

You can buy it from Sonicstate right here for £19.95:

Sound design and some crazy powerful features of the Synthstrom Deluge

I put together a clip with some of the surprises found under the hood.

Things like sample and filter layering, morphing single cycle waveforms (not sure it's intended for this but it works…) and a crazy powerful mod matrix make this a standout synth machine.
