Nord Lead 2x : Modular Style Sounds

Published on Jul 8, 2017 100 Things I Do

"Back before I had a VCS3 I found that my Nord Lead 2x could make some pretty convincing modular sounds.

The Mod Envelope and 2 LFO's can be routed to some interesting places and, he Amplifier has an incredibly long release time allows you just to play a note and noodle. Being that you are in a slow release the whole the sound slowly evolves even if you don't touch anything.

I added some annotations to show how the patch is changing the oscillators and some of the choices I made along the way to keep the modular vibe going as long as I could. I hope you can use some of these ideas!"

Rheyne - Sequenced Jam #43 (Moog Mother-32, Moog DFAM, Make Noise Eurorack)

Published on Jul 8, 2017 Rheyne

"A variation of a previous patch with some lighting added using Ableton and Max for Live. All notes are triggered by the synths, no MIDI is being sent from Ableton. Lighting is triggered from the inputs on the Expert Sleepers ES-8. Reverb is from a Strymon BigSky, and audio was recorded straight from the mixer."

"This uses most of the wave outputs from each of the three MOS-LAB Model 15 oscillators, either as audio or as modulation sources. The first changes are made by modulating the VCF by adding sine waves from Osc 1 and 2, then a sawtooth from Osc 3, one a time. Then a Moog Sub 37 joins in with high tones, then another Sub 37 adds an eight-beat sequence. One take. No overdubbing. Model 15 patch as shown."

AX80 v Virus TI A/B test #2 (Which is which?)

Published on Jul 8, 2017 MIDERA

"Here's my second shot at an A/B comparison between the AX80 and the Virus TI. My first test only used one patch. This time, there are 4 patches. For each patch I play either synth first (no order). Pick which synth is which! To make it easy, designate by guessing which is the AX80 for the 4 patches in order (i.e. A B A B)."

Moog Werkstatt modded with built In Synthrotek echo module

Published on Jul 7, 2017 Bell Tone Synth Works

"Here's a little demo video of a Moog Werkstott custom mod project we did. The main attraction is a built-in echo module with patchable CV modulation. It's also got a volume knob, a gate input jack (this needs a little transistor circuit in order to work), and separate 1/8" outputs for the pulse and square waveforms. The first half shows the Korg sequencer triggering the envelope generator through the new gate input jack, and then gradually adding echo. The second half shows one of my favorite ways to use it-- pushing the echo processor until it starts to feed back and then manipulating the harmonics using the Feedback and Delay Time knobs while the synth plays a PWM drone.

Akai AX80 versus Virus TI A/B sound comparison: 1 patch

Published on Jul 8, 2017 MIDERA

"Made an A/B comparison of a somewhat simple sound I designed in both the AX and and TI. Personally - I found even the filter (on the TI this was the analog 2 pole filter) to be virtually indistinguishable.

Not the best A/B due to the simple type sound, perhaps I'll try to make a few more sounds that are more complex in the future. But for now - which is which (A is always Synth 1 and B is always Synth 2)."

Update:

3 Modules #14: Maths, Braids, Ears

Published on Jul 8, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"'Oh yeah!', it's the first episode featuring Braids!

Frankly, I was just fooling around trying to make Maths do something weird and non-repetitive (so excuse the mess of cables in this one), when suddenly a voice was seductively moaning: OH YEAAAAAH! Naturally, I had to get my camera out and record some of this.

Patch notes:
The basic idea was to use Braids' built in quantizer in conjunction with a complex CV signal from Maths/Ears to create an interesting step sequence.

There's too many connections going on with Maths to thoroughly explain everything here. I was trying to create a sequence of slow movements that wouldn't repeat identically every time. However, that idea was left half cooked when I stumbled across this vocal sound. I'll probably be getting back to a more concise take on this idea in a later episode.

It all becomes kinda convoluted here, and I know all of this is totally unnecessary to achieve that funny "oh yeah" sound: all you really need for that is to sweep Braids' 'timbre' in a certain way.

I'm using the VFOF mode on Braids, and the internal quantizer 'converts' Maths' continuous CV signal to steps. I was using the JAPAnese scale (I know, I wrote minor pentatonic in the video. Whoops!). Additionally, I'm using Braids' internal envelope to modulate the "color" parameter every time the pitch jumps from one step to the next.

Ears is following the envelope of the inverted sum output from Maths, and sending the resulting signal back into a bunch of Maths' parameters. I found that with this patch I could use Ears' amplitude knob to sort of 'lock' the sequence of notes into a certain range, in a way that would only slowly take effect when the knob was moved – interesting!"

This one features the Neutron Sound 'Orgone Accumulator', the WMD 'PDO' and the Folktek 'Matter' as the sound sources.
The audio from the Orgone Accumulator is split into two, one is going direct to my mixer, the other is being routed through the Reflex Liveloop in granular (G Move) mode.

The Iron Ether 'Pithoprakta' and the Livewire 'Chaos Computer' both play big parts in this patch."
