Art + Music + Technology Podcast 183: Dave Rossum Interview

You can find the full transcript on Synthtopia here.

via Art + Music + Technology:

"Dave Rossum has quite a history. From helping to start up E-mu Systems, managing its acquisition by Creative Labs (and working with them through a 10-year run of amazing designs) and the creation of Rossum Electro-Music, Dave has been designing the heck out of music instruments. I was really excited when the Synthtopia folks we able to pull this interview together, since I've been a fan of E-mu devices for a long, long time, and have been mesmerized by the new modules he's been developing.

In our chat, we talk in detail about the development of the early E-mu modular system, the move into sampling technology, the effect of the Creative purchase and the technology developments behind the Proteus lineup. We also go into detail about Dave's design work with the new series of modules that he's working on, as well as the upcoming sampler module that has everyone humming.

This was a lot of fun, and super-educational; I learned an awful lot about the various technological advances behind samplers and sample-based systems. Given my renewed interest in sampling, that was very interesting to me. But his views on analog and digital modular designs, and his willingness to take on impossible projects and find a way to make 'em work - it was inspirational."

You can thank Richard D. James for the mircrotuning on Monologue.

"RICHARD D. JAMES: I really enjoyed working on this with you. I know I only joined the project near the end, but I found it really exciting. Like a proper job, ha.

TATSUYA TAKAHASHI: Richard, it was amazing working with you on the monologue. And now to be interviewed by you?!? That's crazy. But also a lot of fun. The monologue was also the last Korg synth that I was involved with directly, so I guess it's a nice conclusion to things.

RDJ: It is now the only synth on the market currently being made to have full microtuning editing, congratulations!

TT: Thanks! But it was completely because of you that we included microtuning. If you hadn't insisted on it, I definitely wouldn't have discovered how powerful it was. Did you ever have a moment of realisation, or some kind of trigger that made you discover microtuning?

RDJ: The first thoughts that I had about tuning in general happened with my early noodlings on a Yamaha DX100, one of the first synths I saved up for. I remember looking at the master tuning of 440 Hz and thinking I would change it, for no other reason apart from it was set by default to that frequency and that it could be changed."

Be sure to read the full interview. It's a fascinating read and it reminded me of why I got into synthesis back in 1986 or so myself. My first synth was the Oberheim Matrix-6, hence the whole "matrix" thing. The appeal wasn't to play conventional music, but rather to explore sound - to explore moods.

Using Jellysquasher to Add Dynamics

Published on Jul 11, 2017 intellijel

"While the Jellysquasher works great for smoothing and fattening dynamic material, it can also add life to static drum grooves and riffs. By sending rhythmic LFOs and Envelopes to its CV inputs notes or beats can be accented and made less predictable. This video offers a few examples of how this can be done.

Jellysquasher:
Analog coloring compressor module

100% analog signal path and sidechain feedforward compressor
Unique (log based RMS) detector
Output routed through a specially selected Edcor transformer with highly desirable saturation qualities.
Three carefully designed analog circuits to impose specific character on the output signal:
TUBE adds non-linear distortion providing second order harmonics
TAPE adds symmetrical distortion providing both even and odd harmonics
XFRM modifies the transformer feedback circuit, giving a boost to low bass content
All three color circuits can be engaged in any combination to react differently based on the input drive level and makeup gain
Sidechain routed through a voltage controllable SVF filter with LP, BP and HP modes. A trimmer on the PCB allows you to adjust Q. This filter can be used independently of the rest of the module.
External sidechain input allows triggering of the compressor with external sources.
Link IN/OUT allows two Jellysquashers to be chained together for stereo operation.
Full CV control of sidechain cutoff, threshold, ratio, attack time, release time, and makeup gain.
Wet/Dry control allows for “New York” style compression where there is a blend of the dry and compressed output signal.
LED bargraph with selectable display modes to view the signal level in VU or the gain reduction in dB.
Specifications:

Max input: +17dBv
Input impedance: 68k ohms
Output impedance: 100 ohms
Frequency response: 5Hz to 30KHz
Range of gain reduction: over 50dB
Threshold: -40dBv to +17dBv
Ratio: 1.3:1 to infinity
Attack: 200us to 200ms
Release: 50ms to 5sec
Makeup gain: 48dB
