An Interview with Barry Schrader Questions 6F: The Barnum Museum & 7 Current State of Synths

The final two questions in my interview with Barry Schrader are now live. Barry discusses what may be his magnum opus, The Barnum Museum, followed by his take on the current state of synthesizers. There are some tie ins to his previous work on Atlantis as well as Louis and Bebe Barron.

"If someone were to ask me what I considered to be my best work, there’s no question in my mind that I would respond that it’s The Barnum Museum. Taken as a whole, this is my longest and most ambitious composition, and one that took me four years to compose. At this time, it remains my last completed work.

The idea for The Barnum Museum came from a short story by one of my favorite living authors, Steven Millhauser. Millhauser is a unique writer, and, so, difficult to classify. He’s been compared to such authors as Calvino and Borges, as well as other writers classified as “magical realists,” but I think he’s in a class by himself. The Barnum Museum is a short story in a collection with the same title. I was fortunate to get permission from Millhauser and his agents to base the work on his story. I was especially lucky that Millhauser agreed to a years-long email correspondence about the work: I would send each movement to him as I finished it and he would comment on the work and my ideas behind it. This was invaluable help in my completing the piece.

P. T. Barnum established two museums in New York City in the nineteenth century. Barnum's American Museum was on the corner of Broadway and Ann Street from January 1, 1842 to July 13, 1865 when it burned to the ground. Barnum built a second museum soon after, but it was also destroyed by fire in 1868. The attractions made the venue a combination of a zoo, museum, lecture hall, wax museum, theatre, and freak show. At its peak, the museum was open fifteen hours a day and had as many as fifteen thousand visitors daily."

Don't miss the full interview question here. You can also go back to the beginning of my interview with Barry Schrader here.

And don't forget, Barry Schrader's Soundtrack to Galaxy of Terror is currently available for Pre-Order.

Rare Working Vintage EML Syn-Key 1500 Analog Synthesizer

Published on Mar 1, 2017 Hailstone Entertainment

This is about as rare as it gets. I believe this is the first Syn-Key 1500 out of well over 155,000 posts on the site. You might remember the Synkey 2001 with punch card reader and blue accents from previous posts. This is the little brother version minus the punchcard reader. To come across one, let alone working, is a rare treat.

"Up for auction we have a very rare EML Syn-Key 1500 analog synthesizer. They did no make many of these! The 1500 is the little brother of the 2000 and does not use memory cards. It has some unique features and sounds great. This unit is in working condition, although there is the odd scratchy potentiometer, so it may need a light servicing if you want it to be 100%."

MATRIXSYNTH Turned 12 Today!

Yep, we are almost a teenager. I'm going to keep this post super short compared to previous years, where I went into a long diatribe about what this site is about. I'm guessing if you are here, you already know. If not, be sure to come back often, and stick around for a bit. :)

I do want to thank ALL of you, the readers and contributors of the site. It's an incredibly flattering and humbling experience to realize how many people take time out of their busy schedules to both visit, and contribute to the site on a daily basis. I hope this site, and what goes up, makes your day just a little bit better. I want to thank the people that create the content that gets featured on the site - all the makers and users of the gear we love. We sometimes take things for granted, but honestly, it's only been 12 years since we have been able to see and share so much in our world of synths. This site started at the birth of media sharing sites like YouTube, and before SoundCloud. The purpose of this site is to showcase our world. Be sure to support others when you can. I hope this site does.

Finally, I want to thank all of the sponsors you see on the site, and of course all of the supporting members of MATRIXSYNTH. Without your support this site simply would not be possible. Thank you so much!

P.S. We are at well over 150,000 posts and counting! :)

v1.3.1 OS Update for The John Bowen Synth Design Solaris Synthesizer

via John Bowen Synth Design

"I am really excited to announce our first major OS "feature upgrade" for the Solaris synthesizer in quite a while - v1.3.1!

There's a number of new features and changes added with v1.3.1 OS:

1) Joystick position is now stored in the preset.
2) Assign buttons and Unison Chord stack now stored with the Preset.
3) A Random Tune parameter both in a preset and at the global level. This works per voice, and only affects the whole voice’s tuning.
4) Preset names and categories of the current bank are now loaded into a memory cache, making selection and viewing of them faster.
5) New MIDI Realtime on/off in the global MIDI page to send/receive Start/Stop commands.
6) Ribbon now outputs MIDI controller on CC18 & CC19.
7) Solaris remembers the last presets selected when you turn it off, so it will resume where you were.
8) Global override parameters added for Sustain and Expression Pedals.
9) Changed the Mod Source listing of Ped1 and Ped2 to "ExpPed and "SusPed" to make it more clear.
10) The ribbon Offset parameter now works differently. It adjusts the "neutral" point from the left end to the right end of the ribbon.
11) FX Bypass now does not alter the on/off state of the Preset’s effects parameters, but truly bypasses the FX bus, and stays bypassed when selecting through presets or using the Compare feature.
12) All remaining system bugs fixed. These include numerous display-related issues (parameters not being refreshed, wrong pages appearing where they shouldn’t, etc..)

This new OS works with both detented and non-detented encoder front panels. If you are a Solaris owner, this is a 'must have' update! You can download v1.3.1 from the Data Files section of the Solaris Forum (for Owners only).

More general information available at http://forums.johnbowen.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=16506. If you have not yet registered your Solaris in the Forum, please send a request to info@johnbowen.com."

Moog Emerson Modular Synthesizer System Review

Published on Jul 20, 2017 SweetwaterSound

"Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater’s maven of modular madness, gives a quick run-through of the Emerson Moog Modular synthesizer. Sweetwater is proud to be chosen to sell the final unit (third of three) that Moog Music will build of this historic synthesizer.

Because it was built using only ’60s-era technology and techniques, the Emerson Moog Modular doesn’t ring out with crystal-clear digital perfection. Subtle distortions and noise of every kind assault every note, and that is the secret of the clone’s success."

"The 3HP Paperface Euro Modules

If anyone remembers my dsp-Host with a 8-pin DIP socket on the panel the Paperface DSP works in the same way. You make your own modules.

It is built on the ATtiny85 but uses the TinyAudioBootloader.

The name 'Paperface' comes from the classic Serge look with white panels.

The TinyAudioBootloader makes it possible to upload new firmware through the audio out port without a programmer just replaying a wavefile at startup.

The module has 3 Analog CV jacks, 2 with attenuators and an audio out jack."
