Intellijel Quadra And Expander Tutorial

intellijel
Published on Aug 3, 2017

"The Intellijel Quadra and Expander modules comprise four parallel function generators (more commonly referred to as 'Envelope Generators'. The Quadra function generators have three modes, AD (Attack, Decay), ASR (Attack, Sustain, Release) and Cycle (perpetually repeating AR envelope or unipolar LFO). Each function can be configured to have a linear or exponential curve and they feature a wide time base control from 0.5ms, to over 30 seconds. The Expander enhances the core functionality by allowing attenuated voltage control over Attack and Decay for each function generator, a Quadrature mode, and an analog OR mixer for each function generator pair.

This video will cover both the Quadra and its optional Expander module.

Quadra Features:
Four function generators with Attack and Decay times ranging from from 0.5 milliseconds to over 30 seconds.
Three modes: AD (attack, decay), ASR (attack, sustain, release), Cycle (AD envelope loops)
Exponential and Linear envelope curves

Additional Expander Features
Four End of Cycle pulse outputs corresponding to the four function generators.
Voltage control of attack and decay (with attenuators) of all four envelopes
Two analog OR (Also known as Peak Circuit) logic outputs that are normalled to the two pairs of envelopes with attenuators.
Special Quadrature modes"

Unfiltered Audio Spec Ops

"Exploring the subtler side of Spec Ops, the 'Ultimate Spectral Processor' on its way from Unfiltered Audio.
This preset I've called 'My God it's full of Stars'

Although highly capable of mangling audio beyond recognition I've used it here to add a pitch-shift up one octave using Stretch, subtle pitch wobble using Slide controlled by an LFO, higher frequency artifacts and texture and generally lots of movement with the LFOs modulating many parameters and also their own - and others - frequency. You can see the dry/wet knob moving and hear the effected and unaffected pad I made in Absynth. A little mellow Vintageverb rounds out the effect.

The possibilities with this effect are huge!

RT-1701 Multi FX Modulation FXs

Jörg Schaaf
Published on Aug 3, 2017

"The EFFEXX module sports modulation FXs like Phasing, Chorus and Flanging. In this example you can listen to the interpolation through 4 different snapshots.

Snapshot 1: Dry Signal
Snapshot 2: Delay & Phasing & Reverb
Snapshot 3: Delay & Chorus & Reverb
Snapshot 4: Delay & Flanging & Reverb

In the beginning the interpolation is controlled by the internal LFO. Later I show the manual control with the big knob.

The music pattern is a little Spectralis pattern with samples from the Sample Library 2.

I hope, you enjoy this little audio demo!"

Prophet 12 Filter and Glide Effects

Sacred Synthesis
Published on Aug 3, 2017

"This very short piece demonstrates two patches. The first imitates a stereo filter by using two layers stacked, panned, and with slightly different cut off frequency settings. It uses the low pass and high pass filters, as well as resonance. This is how you make an expensive synthesizer sound like a frog in a pond. Nothing but the most important sound design techniques here.

In the second patch, the filter is thrown wide open, the resonance is eliminated, and polyphonic glide is added for dramatic effect on both ends of the keyboard.

In the entire demonstration, only six voices are used. Both patches use four oscillators of pulse width modulation. All music, including the bass, was played on the Prophet 12 Keyboard. No pedalboard was used.

This piece is an extract from 'le carnaval des animaux', originally written for piano and cello, here it is for piano and ondes Martenot. Maurice Martenot, inventor of the ondes Martenot, played this piece in Abel Gance's 1931 film 'la fin du monde'.

"experimental ambient. live performance for modular synthesizer and effects.

a rhodes improvisation was recorded into an ER-301 looper unit. that audio runs through mutable clouds as a send effect, then out through delay and reverb pedals.

the ER-301 also generates the vinyl-like crackles with a custom unit: white noise processed via wavefolder, into ladder filter and EQ. r beny and i have been working on this unit for a little while.

two monome ansibles are used. the first, running Cycles, sends unsynced LFOs into attenuators, and then into clouds parameters. the second ansible, running Levels, controls the ER-301 with three encoders on the arc: wet/dry mix, crackle density, and playhead position.

monome earthsea, via buttons on the grid, triggers the looper's reset, which starts playback at the position set with the third arc encoder.

the qubit mixology manages the audio from the ER-301 and clouds, then pushes it through a mackie 802-vlz4 with additional sends to strymon el capistan and bluesky effects. audio recorded with ableton live, video edited with davinci resolve 14b6."

LeafAudio Microphonic Soundbox - Audio Demo

Published on Aug 3, 2017

"Here's a first demo of our Microphonic Soundbox. It's ready and will be available as a DIY kit and ready made unit via www.exploding-shed.com

It is an acoustic instrument which I created 20 years ago and finally we made it public now to share it with you. 2 internal contact mics can be amplified (100x Gain) and mixed to the mono out as a line signal. If an external signal is inserted, mic 1 is switched off. Supercool for creating otherworldly sounds and ambiences, great for processing with hard- and software."

Creating a new acoustic synths label for these moving forward. No, guitars don't count. Guitar synths, however, do. :)

"This video is an excerpt from a repair of a Roland SH-2000. The keyboard was having contact issues on many notes. The issue was that the 2 bus bars were very dirty. I cleaned them, and this solved the issue.
This portion of the repair took a little over two hours, due to the amount of disassembly and reassembly required. I had to cut out most of the footage to cut this down to a 10 minute segment."

3 Modules #17: Rings, Peaks, uScale

Comparative Irrelevance
Published on Aug 3, 2017

"Mmmm, Rings… It's raining heavily outside, and I could sit and listen to this meditative patch for hours, as it blends in with the rain. I had to cheat a little and add some open air recording from my balcony into the mix about halfway through, to give you an impression of what this sounds like on my end. :)

Patch notes (really simple this time):
Rings is in the 4-note polyphonic setting, which means that up to four notes can be ringing at the same time, and the notes are alternated between the left and right outputs.

Both of Peaks' channels are in tap tempo LFO mode. Channel 1 is producing a stepped triangle wave, which is quantized via µScale and then becomes the "base arpeggio" that Rings is playing.

However, Peaks' channel 2 is producing a slewed random wave which is sent to µScale's shift input, causing a meandering, random movement centered around that base arpeggio. Because the random signal is slewed, Rings passes through all the intervening notes from step to step, in a sort of strumming movement.

I tapped the tempos for Peaks' channels *almost* in time with each other, but made sure that they weren't identical so that there would be a hint of rhythmical phasing in the pattern. Of course, the range of the random wave also determines how many notes will potentially be played between each step – larger random intervals equals shorter time between each note played within that step (I hope you're following me? This feels easier to visualize, and more complicated to type out).

Finally, the second output from µScale – which is just the arpeggio without the random shift – is patched to Rings' brightness. The signal is inverted, so that higher notes should be less bright and vice versa.

As you can see, I'm periodically changing what notes are allowed through the µScale. Towards the end I'm also twisting the top parameter on Peaks. This is the LFO amplitudes, i.e. the range of notes spanned by the stepped triangle arpeggio and the random shift.

As always, thanks for watching!"
