Moog Subsequent 37 Sounds

Published on Sep 28, 2017 Perfect Circuit Audio

"This video shows some of the sounds the Moog Subsequent 37 can produce including classic Moog bass sounds, duophonic sounds, and leads. The last part also shows how the Subsequent 37 can be used to distort and filter external sounds.

The Subsequent 37, from Moog Music, is an upgraded and improved version of their original Sub 37 analog synthesizer. Just like with the original, it has 40 knobs and 74 switches, making it one of the most powerful Moog synthesizers on the market. The Subsequent 37 improves on the original with a number of user-requested enhancements. Now with double the headroom, the Subsequent 37 can reach an even fatter tone when stacking oscillators. The Subsequent also comes with an upgraded keybed, for ultimate playability.

Sevilla Soft UHMR USB HOST MIDI ROUTER

Spain based Sevilla Soft also made the MBC1 MIDI Breath Controller.

The following are details on the UHMR via Compas Flamenco, via Sevilla Soft.

"UHMR is an interface that allows us to interconnect MIDI USB class compliant and MIDI DIN devices without the need to use a computer as a bridge between them. It consists of a USB type B connection for powering or programming the device, eight LED indicators for USB connections, two LEDs for MIDI input and output, two pushbuttons for various functions, a switch for programming, a USB HOST input and a MIDI DIN input and output.

The USB HOST input supports a USB HUB (or two cascade) where you can connect up to eight USB class compliant devices (controllers, keyboards, sound modules, MIDI interfaces, etc ...) and communicate them with each other or with the input and output. In case of need, if we do not have a computer at any given time, the system can be configured with the two pushbuttons and LED indicators following the instructions in the manual. Although it is much easy and more intuitive to program it with the application UHMRconfig for Windows and Mac Os X that you can download from the web www.sevillasoft.com. Our interface has a switch that in normal operating state is in the RUN position, if we move it to the PROG position the USB connector type B becomes a USB HID device where it will communicate with the UHMRconfig application. UHMRconfig presents an array with the devices that we have been connecting to the UHMR, each input can be routed to each of the outputs including the input and output MIDI DIN. UHMRconfig will also allow us to update the firmware of the device."

"What an absolute pleasure to have Finlay of Future Sound Systems and Roy Gwinn present the new Gristleizer modules at Modular Meets Leeds 2017. Unfortunately Chris Carter couldn't be with us on the Sunday (although links to his performance and interview below) but Roy shared his stories of the original unit created when he was only 15 years old, revisions, ideas, googling his own name and Finlay then took us through a series of killer audio demos with Mutable Instruments Braids through the modules, electric guitar and beats from a Korg Volca. I feel honoured to have people like this involved with Modular Meets so thanks to all involved! "

New Make Noise Contour and Dynamix Eurorack Modules

Published on Sep 28, 2017 MAKEN0ISE

"Introducing two new modules derived from circuits of the 0-Coast synthesizer: Contour and Dynamix.

Contour is a 4-stage function generator, or ADSR, designed to create control voltages to drive the Dynamix, modDemix and other fast VCAs, VCFs and more. Dynamix is a fast two-channel Low Pass Gate, Dynamics manager and mixer."

Update: details on each in via Make Noise:

"Contour is a 4 Stage function generator, or ADSR, derived from our 0-COAST synthesizer. It is designed to create control voltages to drive the Dynamix, modDemix and other fast VCAs, VCFs, and more. The Contour takes inspiration from the original Loudness Contour circuit of the MiniMoog, which is perhaps the most well-known example of East Coast Synthesis. The simplified control set (where Decay adjust both the decay to Sustain and the Release) makes it quick and intuitive to set-up. The Contour module adds full voltage control, a mirrored output, End of Onset and End of Contour Gate outputs which allow it to be highly integrated into any modular synthesizer regardless of coastal allegiance.

- analog 4-Stage ADSR envelope generator also operable as 3 or 2-stage function

- Linear or Exponential shapes, and everything in between

- Patch EON OUT to the Gate IN to cycle for LFO function

- Voltage Control over time based parameters

- Mirrored OUT useful for Crossfading patches

- LEDs indicate activity on all outputs

- EON and EOC outputs allow for cascading multiple units and/ or MATHS and Functions

- Pairs well with Dynamix, MATHS, Function

Width: 6hp

Depth: 24mm

Power @+12V: 36mA

Power @-12V: 16mA"

"Dynamix is a fast two-channel Low Pass Gate, dynamics manager and mixer, the core of which is derived from our 0-COAST synthesizer. The LEVEL parameter provides simultaneous voltage control over the Amplitude and Frequency content of audio signals, operating as a VCF/A. The DYNMC parameter accepts audio signals or control voltages and converts them into a signal that may increase or decrease the LEVEL parameter thus allowing for Expansion, Compression and Ducking. The summing section is complete with an AUXiliary INput allowing for the chaining of multiple MIX units (modDemix, Optomix and RxMx modules) to create large, non-centralized mixes.

The Dynamix is functionally similar to the Optomix LPG: a fundamental element in the sound of West Coast Synthesis, however, rather than using the Vactrol component that gives the Optomix its characteristic “slow” sound, the Dynamix circuit utilizes transistors in a topology that has more in common with East Coast instruments. This combination of West Coast technique and East Coast circuitry is No-Coast synthesis at its best, allowing the Low Pass Gate to be used in tandem with an extremely important East-Coast synthesis circuit: the ADSR, a 4-stage Envelope generator we call CONTOUR.

- analog Low Pass Gate with fast response allows for AM synthesis and use with ADSR

- Input Signal Attenuator with soft overload at maximum settings

- DYNMC CV IN can act as audio side-chain input for compression, expansion and ducking

- LEDs indicate LEVEL activity

- Voltage controlled mixer with AUX IN allows for chaining of multiple units to create larger mixes

- Pairs well with Contour, Optomix, modDemix

Restoring a Memorymoog Plus by Wes Taggart for The Bob Moog Foundation

The Bob Moog Foundation has a post up on Wes Taggart's journey in restoring a Memorymoog Plus. You can find the full post here.

"The Haloed Memorymoog. Probably the Henry the VIII of all the late 70s/early 80s poly analog synths, equally as big and mythical. Also, just as finicky and vindictive.

Michelle Moog-Koussa, the executive director of the Bob Moog Foundation, contacted me in September of 2016 concerning a Memorymoog Plus that was graciously donated by that summer’s raffle winner, Lee Keeley. As the 2016 Memorymoog raffle winner, his dream of owning a solid working Memorymoog came true. Michelle asked me if I was willing to bring Lee’s donated instrument back to life."

"The Europa v2.0 upgrade was so worth the money. It adds so many great features which can be read here...

In 2015 I re-calibrated the synthesizer as per the Roland service notes. Improvement was heard instantly with more consistency across all VCO's, Filters and PWM settings.

The metal end piece just to the right of the top most key had been "re-engineered" in the past by a previous owner. When I bought the synth, there was a poorly repaired slot in the piece which I re-repaired and repainted the piece. It is not the exact colour as the rest of the Jupiter, but it is close and I'm just mentioning it so you know everything there is to know.

There are a few chips to the paintwork on the face shown in the photos. The aluminium end pieces have a few nicks, but overall, very good condition. The synthesizer has remained in good care in my home. Close up photos show these.

It all works perfectly, no scratchy pots or sliders, no missing caps, nothing bent or broken."

Tasty Chips GR-1 Granular Synthesizer Stretch Goal Tease

Published on Sep 28, 2017 Tasty Chips

"The keyboard is split in 2 octaves. The higher octave plays within the area of a drumloop sample. The other one is playing in the area of a synth sample. Within the drumloop sample, the sample position is mapped to MIDI notes, so you can map a note to the snare position for example. This is a quick hack to test multitimbral possibilities and is not even close to be polished and included, but we will work this out when the next stretch goal is reached!! :)"

ROLI Introduces the next generation Lightpad Block: Super Sonic Surface

Published on Sep 28, 2017 ROLI

"The Lightpad M is the next-generation Lightpad Block from ROLI. The 225 microkeywaves on its soft silicone surface create an even more precise and sensitive playing experience. Play any kind of electronic or acoustic sound on a super sonic surface that fits in the palm of your hand. And connect more Blocks together to expand your instrument.

Touch even deeper musical textures

The redesigned interface of the Lightpad M builds on the touch-responsive powers of the original Lightpad Block. Lightpad M’s surface is deeper, softer, and defined by undulating microkeywaves — for an even more precise playing experience.

Enhanced tactile feedback

Based on the wave-like surface of ROLI's Seaboard instruments, the 225 microkeywaves of the Lightpad M add more tactile feedback, so you can interact with the surface in a deeper way and gauge each movement more precisely. A thicker, softer silicone layer enhances pressure-responsiveness.

Enhanced visual feedback

The surface of the Lightpad M is 50% brighter than the original Lightpad Block. It features higher-definition colors and a higher contrast display, so you can move more quickly between notes, instruments, and scales."

You'll have to play around with your JP8000 and in doing so, you'll come across some fantastic results. It's such a deep and expressive keyboard that totally holds it's own in today's market. It's one of my all time favourite keyboards. Even with a Nord Lead 3 and a Multimoog in my arsenal, this is the go to synth for me."

3 Modules #25: Rings, Clouds, Ears

Published on Sep 28, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"This week's video is a two-parter. First I had a go at using an inverted gate from Ears to create an 'automatically latching drone' with Clouds. But then it felt like a missed opportunity to not flip it around and go from Clouds into Rings instead of the other way around, so I went back and recorded a second part. I think part 2 sounds more interesting, but part 1 had a little bit more going on patch-wise so here they both are.

Patch notes:

In part one I'm sending audio from Ears' contact microphone through Rings' resonator and then into Clouds. I'm "cheating" a tiny bit with the Quadratt to invert Ears' gate output, so that the gate goes high when the audio signal is low (instead of the opposite). I'm then using this inverted gate to freeze Clouds whenever the audio goes below the gate threshold. In other words, Clouds will unfreeze the buffer whenever I tap Ears hard enough, and then immediately freeze the buffer again.

Finally, I'm using Clouds own audio outputs to modulate position and size. Using an audio signal like this is virtually like randomizing those parameters.

For part two I flip Clouds and Rings around, and instead send audio from Ears into Clouds, freeze it, and then process the output with Rings' resonator. Pretty simple, but very cool way to make some moody "dark ambient"-esque drones. I'm changing a lot of the parameters manually here, but you could just as well use CV modulation to make it interesting over time. I especially recommend using a slow LFO to modulate Clouds' position – sweeping through the recorded buffer.

Thanks for watching!"
