KVgear Vixen Mixer for Korg Volcas Now on Kicktarter

Published on Oct 4, 2017 Mike Rafferty

"Demonstration of prototype KVgear Vixen mixer. All audio was recorded directly from the headphone output of the Vixen into the video camera. Outboard effects on Aux 1 and Aux 2 of the mixer are Strymon Dig dual delay (my favorite!) and Strymon BigSky. For more information see kvgear.com/products/vixen-mixer"

via Kickstarter

"This is the mixer Volca lovers have been wanting for years: 8 audio channels, panning, mutes, 2 aux sends/returns, and onboard power for 8 Volcas. It can be powered by batteries or the included AC power adapter. All this fits into the footprint of a single Volca!

The images below are of the special limited edition blue version. The standard version will be black. See more info at the bottom of this page.

The Vixen has 3.5 mm (1/8") mini jacks on each audio channel for easy connection to small synths without the need for adapters. Your adapter-less existence continues as you connect to/from external effects boxes and monitors through standard 6.35 mm (1/4") jacks.

Visibility is important, whether you're in a dimly lit studio or outdoors in the sun. All knobs on the Vixen have painted indicator lines. Graphics on the control panel are crisp, clear and as large as possible. The translucent top panel allows LEDs to be visible for Mute, Power, and VU meters.

The Vixen has the same footprint as a Volca, allowing it to fit into most Volca stands and racks. KVgear stands such as the Lobe V3 and V4, Volc 45-2, -3, and -4, and Ramp Racks (3 sizes) are perfect matches for the Vixen.

The Vixen can be powered by any of three sources: external AC mains power supply (included), internal AA batteries (batteries not included), or an external mega battery that you provide. All synths connected to the power hub (using optional power cables) can draw power directly from the Vixen, eliminating piles of batteries or wall warts.

Tr 808 vs Tr 08 - Which is better?

Published on Oct 4, 2017 soundseasy

"We were lucky enough to get our hands on a classic TR 808 and put it side by side with the new TR-08.
Now before we start a chin stroking drum machine war, let me just say that the original is the original, and no matter how good the remake is there's something magical about this big metal box with it's clunky buttons that seem more at home on a push button telephone from the 80's, rather than a ground breaking, genre spanning rhythm machine.
but the question really has more to do with whether the TR-08 can satisfy your 808 desires, without forking out close to $5000.00AUD for a second hand one!!!

The 808 we had was very well cared for, but it didn't change the fact that it's a VERY old piece of gear, unfortunately drum machines aren't like a stradivarius, they don't exactly get better with age. so there are a some crackly pots and wayward tuning issues, but I wont lie, it was a real buzz hearing an original 808 going through it's paces, and maybe if I had the $$'s I might talk myself into getting one.

The TR-08 definitely held its own though. In reality I could have spent a little more time tuning it to match the 808 (because thankfully you can with this incarnation) but I felt that it definitely possessed the same characteristics of the old classic, and so it should, it's been modeled directly, from what I would assume, is a beautifully cared for original 808 stored deep within the vaults at Roland.

In reality the TR-08 probably sounds like how most of the original 808's sounded straight out of the box.
Before the ravages of time started adding their sonic quirks into the mix. But who knows?

So in closing would I by a TR-08 as an 808 substitute? Damn right I would! It's worth every penny!

But if I win the lottery I'm heading straight to ebay to get me an original too!"

Modular Workshop - Live @ Analogue Zone Showroom E06

Streamed live 49 minutes ago Analogue Zone Showroom / Synths and Studio

"In this week's episode Ramin will be a somelier of one of the most famous and oldest concepts in synthesizer music, that is, lowpass gates. We will hear how the older and more modern versions of these tone and amplitude control modules differ from one another. Ramin also plans to go deeper with the Shapeshifter's different parameters. Also, he is going to explore the Morphagene's other sample manipulating parameters in a muscial context. Stay tuned and join us in the chatroom on Wednesday!

Modular Workshop is a weekly live series from the Analogue Zone Budapest showroom with our experienced modular electronic music performer & friend, Ramin Sayyah. The series was created in order to introduce either one particular module or a very special selection of module-combinations to make various kinds of music with them.

A new episode is streamed live every Wednesday on Analogue Zone's Youtube channel. After a short live performance, Ramin walks us through the building blocks of the patch and answers any questions raised by the viewers.

Tune in every Wednesday afternoon for the show and feel free to ask questions directly during the live stream - also let us know if you want to pay a visit to the showroom during the live show: we can accept a few guests too.

THYME Effects Processor Now Available

Published on Oct 4, 2017 Bastl Instruments

"The Thyme is an effects processor that is best described as a sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine. With a lot of parameters at hand it enables the exploration of all the time based effects and the vast space in between their classical multi-effects categories and in stereo!"

You can find previous posts featuring Bastl Instruments THYTME here.

And the press release:

"THYME is out! The sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine?!

We are excited to finally announce that Thyme - the effects processor of our dreams - is now available to the world! We started working on the machine more than 3 years ago and we can proudly say it is our most ambitious project yet and sets new standards of quality and craziness. The wooden sides and mat black aluminum panels with laser engraved graphics are beautiful and durable. Our search for the perfect housing caused extensive delays but we can confidently say it was worth the wait! From the first announcement at Musik Messe 2015 we have reworked the hardware architecture from top to bottom to meet the high quality demands of today's musicians.

The Thyme is an effects processor that is best described as a sequenceable robot operated digital tape machine. With loads of parameters to tweak it invites users to explore a wide range of time based audio effects as well as the vast space in between their classical multi-effects categories (delay, phaser, reverb, chorus, pitch shifter, multi-tap delay, tape delay, tremolo, vibrato, compressor) and it’s all in stereo! Each of the 9 different parameters (Tape Speed, Delay Coarse & Fine, Feedback, Filter, extra heads Spacing and Levels, Dry/Wet Mix and Volume) has a dedicated modulation source – called the Robot – which can be adjusted separately for left and right channels to create exciting new sound effects. The Robot can function as a multi shaped LFO, an external CV source or an envelope follower which uses the external audio signal as a control source. On top of all that there are 8 buttons for selecting presets which can then be sequenced by a built in meta sequencer. The Robots, the sequencer and the Delay can be synchronised to external or internal clock. Thyme interfaces with MIDI, analog clock and CV, it has a switchable stereo/mono input, stereo output, adjustable headphone output and a footswitch jack.
