Soldering 0805 Caps for Deckard's Dream part 2 - Iron or Hot Air

Published on Oct 15, 2017 TjimmyChonga

http://www.deckardsdream.com - Deckard's Dream is now available in both kit and pre-built form as announced here.

"Aside from 4000 through-hole components, the Deckard's Dream DIY synth requires soldering almost 700 very small surface mount capacitors.
Should you do that with a soldering iron or a smd hot air rework station? You decide!"

Part 1 here.

GRP A2 & A4

Published on Aug 9, 2017 Thomas Neyens

"A simple jam I made when exploring the GRP A2 for the first time. I used both GRP's internal sequencers and the Cirklon to sequence the other synths. Except for the BigSky and Chorus Echo, there are no effects and I didn't do any post-editing of sounds.

Apologies for the bad IMovie skillzzzz. I just wanted to show how intuitive the GRP's are.

Synths used:
GRP A2 (+ Strymon BigSky)
GRP A4 (+ Strymon BigSky)
Roland TR-808 (+ Roland RE-501)
Roland MKS-80 (+ Strymon BigSky)"

Some notes from the listing on the sound of the DX1 compared to other Yamaha DX synths:

"There will always be people that say that the DX1 is just two DX7s under one roof but having owned four DX1s in my lifetime, (I'm old) multiple DX5s, and DX7s this does not ring true to me. The DX1 has 5 microprocessors and 13 circuit boards inside it's heavy gauge steel body. It was built out of the highest quality components available. It just sounds better in my opinion. I am sure it is in the components used. This entire package is wrapped up in a Brazilian rosewood and heavy gauge steel housing.

I like the first generation of FM synths and how they have a darker more organic sound. If you can't afford a DX1 then get a brown MKI DX7 or a DX5. They all sound fantastic but the DX1 sounds the best to my ears.

I was comparing the sound of the DX5 and DX1 side by side today and the difference in sound is shocking (not just through the headphone amp). When you switch from the DX5 to the DX1 it sounds like someone took a wet blanket off your studio monitors. Also, Being able to program so quickly and use the velocity and after touch as a performance tool makes it special to me and dear to my heart. I have always had a thing for the DX1. I am only selling this because I am moving and have another. It sounds "better" than other FM synths in the same way a guitar or recording console sounds 'better' than another. It is hard to quantify.

Everything on this instrument functions like it should and it looks sharp. It has always been kept in a climate controlled environment. It has two very small cosmetic flaws that are not immediately noticeable but I wanted to mention them. It has a light one inch scratch below the Yamaha logo closest to the keys and a small cosmetic imperfection about the size of a pencil eraser or cigarette butt end on the left hand side. (to the right of the data entry buttons above key #15 on the face of the instrument) Other than those two cosmetic imperfections it looks incredible and would belong in a museum. The inside of the instrument is also extremely clean. It has never been abused or abandoned. Everything on this instrument works perfectly, there are no noisy pots or problem of any kind and I know these machines very well. If you are crazy enough to take this on a tour, every performance would go off without a hitch. It's a very nice machine.

They only made 140 of these. My guess is only 75-100 remain in good functioning condition. It's hard to find a DX1 for sale period, I would say it's even harder to find one in this condition that wasn't set aside to get dusty in some garage somewhere, when all the cheaper and lighter rompler keyboards came around in the early 90s."

Casio XW-P1 : noodling with a "lo-fi" sound

Published on Oct 14, 2017 Nice and Synths

"This video contains some noise from a Casio XW-P1. It was recorded to PC via a Focusrite Scarlett 18i6. No processing was done to the audio, this is just direct sound from the synthesizer.

The sound is just a hex layer pad type sound, using the XW-P1's "Lo-Fi" DSP effect. Part of this effect is a crude bit-crushing type...thing. I am using that to get all the grungy background noise.

As always, this video doesn't represent what competent music sounds like, or all the possibilities of the synthesizer presented. It is just around 5 minutes of meandering noodlery.

And finally, one day I will get some better lighting so the video doesn't look completely horrible. :)"

"Selmer SM-101 Auto Rhythm drum machine from the 70's.

Working well.

Small things better to mention:

-The light is not flashing.

-The snares / hihats are maybe getting noisy when turning the balance from soft to clear
(but I'm not sure it's an issue, maybe it's sounds like this originally).

- the wood box is a bit weary.

Voltage is 220, plug is european type."

Overall good condition and perfect working but has small issues:
- Some pots (4) of the module are not original but perfect. (see photos)
- The snare pad is broken a bit, but its working and easy to stick. (photo 7.)

Otherwise good overall condition.
All function of the module and all pads are working.
Stand is original Simmons, just like the cables and the manual."

X1L3 - circuit bent - PT87 - harsh noise and power electronix redux

Published on Oct 15, 2017 manufacturedZ3R0

"Revisiting the PT87 for what is probably the last time with 32 minutes of post optimism improvised power electronics.

Shop:
http://www.x1l3.bigcartel.com/

Cleared out the hoard of these in the circuit bending stash recently and modified them all. They're becoming harder and harder to get these days and this is most likely the last run of them from this camp. It seemed fitting to throw out the constraints of percieved attention span and adherence to a time limit and just let the camera roll. If you're here it's either by accident or you know what you're looking for. And if this is what you're looking for then turn it up, sit back, have a beer, take a trip through the shatter zone and let the machine do the talking. This is the modified board at work, with no additional fx. Shifting from scene to scen within the noise through the set. A great variety of dark and harsh PE orientated textures.

If you visit the shop, there are at the time of writing this PT87 and 82's available. Other than the colour they're identical in performance. Once they're gone they're more than likely gone for good this time.

Synth Art Vol 1 Synth Book by Ste Holmes on Kickstarter

via Kickstarter:

"I created a series of 36 illustrations of synthesisers over the course of the summer. I thoroughly enjoy doing them. They were released on social media and quickly gained popularity with both synth lovers and manufacturers alike. People wanted to know where they could get a hold of them hence this illustrated book project.

Most designs end up on tees or travel mugs these days but i wanted something different for Synth Art. I really wanted to see these designs in a coffee table book and thought it would be a nice addition to any studio.

To accompany the book campaign are packs of 5 postcards. I already have these printed and all digital content is ready to ship too. The only outstanding work to be done is the printing of the book itself.

The Book

This is a quality hardback photo book. I have chosen a local printer so that I can more easily oversee the production of the book ensuring its quality before distribution.

I will sign each book before sending. This will be a first run and totally unique. All backers of the printed book will be listed in the back as a thank you for your support.

Here are all of the images (in no particular order). There are two reserved pages for Synth Guru backers. If any of these are not taken then I will fill their space with illustrations I have in reserve."
