"I was playing around with my Microkorg's built in arpeggiator and found that the "Random" type sounded pretty interesting. I decided to use all black keys since I have a love for them and played a simple melody on my Casiotone CT-310. I also threw in a little low tom using my Volca Beats.

Recorded using Logic Pro X with the Valhalla Shimmer reverb."

Estradin 11 - Ultra Rare Vintage Soviet Analog Drum Machine

"There are three rows of round buttons that represent steps in a drum sequence. The first row is for the Kick drum and the second is for the Snare. All of these buttons are working and you can create custom patterns with the kick and snare. I believe the third row is for the hi-hats, however it seems that this row is unfortunately not working, although the hi-hats are audible in the preset patterns.

If none of the pattern buttons are engaged, you can create your own patterns using the round buttons on the front panel. If a pattern button is engaged, you can use the round buttons to add their respective drums to the preset pattern. In this way, you can create pattern variations and fills on the fly.

All the pattern buttons work and they all latch, meaning they stay pressed in until you press them again. It’s easy to press multiple button combinations to create hybrid patterns. The translation of the pattern buttons is as follows: Rhumba, Samba, Mambo, Cha Cha, Jazz Rock, Bossa Nova, Beat, Folk 1, Tango, Swing, Folk 2, Beguine, March, Slow Rock, Ballad, and Waltz.

There are additional control buttons on the front panel. The “P/4” button seems to alternate between 4/4 and 6/8 versions of the patterns, unless the pattern is already in 6/8 (or 3/4). There are a pair of buttons, one marked with a triangle, and the other with a triangle and a circle. I can’t tell exactly what they do, but at least one of them needs to be engaged in order to play a pattern. Finally, the “K” button mixes in the custom sequences for the kick and snare (and hats if they’re working) that you create on the round buttons.

The included foot pedal makes something happen, although I’m not sure that it’s working as intended. It’s a controller pedal rather than a momentary pedal, and using it seems to just toggle between normal pattern playback and a loop of the first step of the pattern. Useful for fills perhaps?

Lastly, it's important to note that although the Estradin 11 is normally a 220V machine, this unit has already been converted by a previous owner to 110V for use in the US. No external step up transformer is necessary. However, like most Soviet electronic instruments, audio is carried on a 5-pin DIN connector. If you need to wire up an adapter, tip is carried on pins 1 and 4, and sleeve is on pin 2. Pin diagrams can be found with a web search."

The TAPE SAW OSC are long sawtooth waves recorded for each key on tape of a Roland RE-301 Chorus Echo. You can hear wow and flutter and even tape dropouts - quite similar to a Mellotron. The SAW OSC, Square OSC and White Noise waves are directly recorded minimoog samples - and sound much crisper than the ‘taped’ waves.

All oscillators are mono waves, but when DUAL MODE is activated (switchable LED for each OSC) a second sample is added to each note and both waves are panned hard to L-R. This will produces a strong stereo image. Mix mono and dual oscillators to control/adjust the stereo width of the sound."

"Our favourite synth the Kastle just got better - new version 1.5

We are really happy to announce that we have managed to improve our beloved synth Kastle. Last minute just in time for christmas!

Since the Kastle got very popular we felt like we needed to make it more sustainable. Therefore we have altered the enclosure - changing from acrylic to fiberglass material which makes it very durable. And also we have added micro USB jack as a power alternative to the AA batteries. The enclosure got smooth black matt finish with some silver and white touches and we also changed supplier for much better patch points.

The whole sound core got complete rework - making it sound much better! The ranges and smoothness is significantly increased enhancing the palette of the possible sounds.

There are now two sound generation engines running in parallel on the main output and on the secondary OSC output. You can either use them separately or mix them together by simply connecting them with a patch cable.

Therefore there are 3 new modes: the formant synthesis, noise mode and tonal noise mode. These original modes are still there and got significant improvement: phase modulation, phase distortion and track & hold modulation.

The formant mode is inspired by the Helmholz Synthesizer - one of the first synths ever built by accessing different combinations of harmonics over fundamental - creating so called formants (vowels).

The noise modes are basically a granular playback of the flash memory (where the program is stored) of the sound processing chip. In other words it is a data player of a piece of computer code (that runs the sound core of the Kastle synth) that has very distinct sonic qualities on its own - often referred to as “glitch” in aesthetic terms. However this mode is so purposeful that instead of talking about a mistake we should be talking about being true to what the true nature of Kastle truly is in very modernistic terms (it is a digital synthesizer).
