TechTax - Modular Synthesizer Workshop in Spokane Washington

Published on Dec 28, 2017 Giszmo

"TechTax is a non-profit based out of Spokane, WA focused on bringing electronic music to the masses."

https://technologicaltaxidermy.com

"CONCEPT:

A Non-Profit community resource, promoting a simple concept: Self Expression Through Electronic Music.

We've broken our program into 3 basic elements:

1.) Education - Workshops and Demos of all shapes and sizes.

2.) Exploration - Open house events focused on discovery & collaboration. Bring something to work on, ask questions, make mistakes, meet new friends, etc...

3.) Live Performance - Artist showcase events where students are encouraged to share their progress with an audience of their peers (all are welcome).

Whether its through the teaching of workshops held at one of our partnering spaces, or the hosting of live showcase events (similar to “Modular on the Spot”), TT hopes to spark interest in electronic music and modular synthesis; ultimately furthering community involvement.

PRIMARY GOAL:

Basically, we want to give Spokane a resource to help grow its electronic music scene. Through holding events and teaching workshops we will plant seeds and give support to anyone interested in becoming an electronic artist."

Prophet REV 2 PlugSE™ Editor by SoundTower

Available via SoundTower

"Prophet REV 2 PlugSE™ is an audio plug-in dedicated to your Prophet REV 2 synthesizer.

This proprietary plug-in is installed in your audio software as a Virtual Instrument (VST or AudioUnits) and will control all of the functions found on the Prophet REV 2.

Stunning graphics, intuitive functions and easy to use menus make tweaking the Prophet REV 2 hardware fun and easy.

Its most important ability is to automate every function of the hardware synth for synchronized playback with your session. Adjusting the timing and the values of all automation data allows you to perfect the performance prior to committing the audio to disk or to use the automation during your live performance.

The PlugSE™ works with any Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) or audio software (like Cubase, Ableton Live, Logic, Nuendo, Digital Performer and many others) that supports VST or AudioUnits (AU) plug-ins.

While it doesn’t feature some advanced editing found in the standalone SoundEditor, the PlugSE™ allows you to automate all parameter changes.

Automate the parameters and let your fingers do the playing."

Moog Synthesizer Prodigy Expander Prototype Serial No 001

"This is the prototype of the Moog Prodigy, called the Moog Prodigy Xpander. This is the ONLY one I've ever seen.

This tabletop module was going to compete with the Oberheim SEM, but Moog Music in the late 70's decided to go with the keyboard version of the Prodigy, and many of them are still in service today.
It works perfectly, sounds incredibly fat, and it's oscillator sync sounds so much better than other analog synths.

I was a rep/dealer/consultant in the 70's and 80's to many golden age companies including Moog Music, (Williamvsille, and Buffalo factories,) Polyfusion, Sequential Circuits, Oberheim, Pearce Amps, and was a consultant to Les Paul.

Owning this for synthesists, is analogous to being a guitarist and owning Fender Stratocaster 001.

Most Moog experts weren't aware of this prototype, but being a rep, and living just 10 miles from the Moog factory, gave me an advantage to obtain rare pieces like this. Tony Marchese was the head engineer on this rare piece.

I met Bob Moog at the age of 19 in 1973, and he became my mentor, helping me in those early days to learn all I could about electronic music.
You'll need a MIDI to CV convertor to use this.

Obviously, this is for true Moog fans, and collectors."

"A superb 1976 Minimoog for sale recently serviced and in excellent condition. It features the original oscillator board and sounds wonderful.

It's in excellent condition overall - there's some cracking to the plastic front panel around oscillator 1, but this doesn't cause any issues in use. The owner refinished the case in a classy dark wood stain some years ago - it presents very well.

There are some minor marks/dings to the woodwork and case, see detailed photos for more information (photos to follow). This Mini was serviced by one of our approved techs last year and is playing very well.

Set for UK 240v use, but can be switched back to 120v if required."

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Stunning near mint Promars for sale serviced and in the original Roland case. This is a superb example of this classic late 70s Roland analogue synth.

In very near mint and exceptionally-clean condition with only very minor marks and signs of use; you'll struggle to find a better example.

Often thought of as simply the monophonic sibling of the Jupiter 4, the Promars in fact features two de-tuneable oscillators for its one voice, making it capable of creating some very interesting noises indeed.

It is a 100v Japanese model and will run fine on North American mains 115/120v without a transformer (we run all our tests using 120v power); however, a step-down transformer is recommended for extended use.
A step-down transformer is required in the UK/EU.
We do not recommend using cheap generic Chinese mains transformers and can supply a high quality UK-made unit if required."

"It has had an extensive service with new bushings, key contacts and sliders/switches cleaned and the power supply re-capped. The synth has been re-calibrated and is sounding superb.

Now reissued by Korg, this is a chance to buy an iconic original in excellent order. Effectively a hard-wired compact version of the monster ARP 2800, the Odyssey is revered for its signature sweeps, leads and bass sounds - like an albino time machine, it transports you back to the golden age of analogue synthesis.

Condition is excellent with a few scratches and scuffs to the case, most of which are on the back of the unit. There is some paint damage from the bolts on the underside of the face but nothing too noticeable, there is a photo displaying these minor flaws. The black plastic side panels have been cut down at the back to make them flush with the back of the unit (possibly to make it fit somewhere in the past). This work has not been done professionally and is rough around the edges as shown in the photos. Click on the photos to zoom in and see more detail.

It is a 110v model.
A step-down transformer is required in the UK/EU.
We do not recommend using cheap generic Chinese mains transformers and can supply a high quality UK-made unit if required."

All Make Noise ambient modular synth performance: Places - POB

Published on Dec 12, 2017 Patrick OBrien

"Ever since I picked up modular in the fall of 2014, the dream was to one day build a patch on an all Make Noise system and perform it live. I have to admit I was intimidated in the beginning, but that didn’t stop me from slowly building my case over the years, learning the modules, and one day making it happen. Now, I can say I took the big leap.

Over the weekend I performed live with my Make Noise system in front of an intimate crowd in the back room of a cocktail bar here in Los Angeles. The outcome was something unexpected— something magical I can’t explain. The joy of having accomplished such a feat leaves me lost for words. And, playing an ambient piece was way out of my comfort zone, but I let my mind work intricately with the machine, and the result was truly my best modular synth performance to date.

This video is the culmination of all I’ve ever put into music my entire life, and I hope you can grab some headphones, close your eyes, open your mind, and give it a listen today. Thank you.

Best Ambient Synth Shootout #46: Waldorf Blofeld - Song 2

Published on Dec 28, 2017 Christian's Sonic Spaces

"This is the second song with the Waldorf Blofeld. It's a table-top 25-voice polyphonic, 16-part multitimbral, digital synthesizer capable of wavetable synthesis and analogue modelling.

I used for the recording the following FX chain:
Waldorf Blofeld - GFI System Specular Reverb 2 - Alesis 3630

The signal goes via a small Behringer mixer straight into the pc.

To create the complete song I recorded consecutively several stereo tracks. The final song was then mastered with just a bit EQ and compression on some tracks and some limiting on the master track.

Well, I decided to go back to the basics, but at the same time make something useful for the synth community and do a kind of competition (I like competitions;-). What's my best synth for ambient music :-)"

oZoe.fr MIDI2CV 5U MIDI CV/GATE/TRIGGERS Modular Interface

via this auction

Some details in Googlish via oZoe.fr:

"This module is articulated around an arduino with a home integration. Four CV output, six gate / trig outputs, one clock input. All inputs / outputs are protected. The CV outputs work between 0 and 8 volts to cover a range of 8 octaves.
The whole electronics comes on a 90x90mm PCB mounted perpendicular to the facade.

The software allows to play fluently in all situations of games (related notes, quilts, outfits, etc.). All the notes supported are played immediately and all the notes are buffered and put in a FIFO type buffer.
For MIDI2CV functions to interface keyboards, sequencers or other MIDI system, it is possible to use this module in mono, polyphonic 1 channel and 4 separate channels but also a dual mode where you can play two right hand notes and left hand arpeggios if you have a keyboard with the split function or if you connect two keyboards. The Sustain MIDI pedal if it is connected to the keyboard (s) is managed according to the modes.

For the arpeggiator, four arpeggios are proposed clocked on the sixteenth note midi-clock if it is available or on an external clock. There are also several modes: fixed hold or pedal sustain, or free.

The MIDI2TRIG can send either trigs of a few milliseconds or Gates of the duration of the pressing of the keys on the outputs Gates in 0 / + 5V or on the outputs CV whose level will depend on the velocity of the note played . It is also possible to have 8 keys assigned to have 8 gates. The keys played are defined by default or assignable by a learning mode.

The CLOCK mode allows you to have the BMP midi at / 4, / 3, / 2, x1, x2, x3, x4. If the midi-cock is not available, then the external clock will also be available at the same reports. That is, divisor and also clock multiplier.

The MIDI2CC allows you to have the cutoff, and other main controls commands (CC) available on the outputs. CCs are defined and directly modifiable in the code.

Whatever the mode of use of the module, the signal of the midi clock (MIDI_CLOCK) will always be available on a dedicated output in x24 as well as the commands of stop / continue / stop on another dedicated output."

3 Modules #39: Dual Looping Delay, Clouds, Ripples

Published on Dec 28, 2017 Comparative Irrelevance

"Do you guys like tuba ambient? It's seriously the best. This patch was inspired by the works of tuba ambient man Tom Heasley. Go check out his music!

Really nothing too fancy going on in this patch. This one's just about turning the right knobs at the right time.

Patch notes:

I'm using Ripples to produce sound by turning the resonance up to self-oscillation level, and I have the BP output patched back into the FM input for some richer tuba-like timbres.

The audio is fed into Clouds, where I'm using the Density parameter to control when the sound is passed through. I'm also using Clouds' pitch shifting to control the pitch of the notes - had to practice a little to find just the knob positions I wanted here. Clouds also adds a bunch of reverb, of course, and then passes the audio on to the Dual Looping Delay.

I've set each channel on the DLD to very slightly different delay times (using the "unquantized time control" by holding down ∞Hold while turning the Time knobs). This creates a little stereo movement in the loops when each channel is sent left and right respectively."

004//The Seething Depths [Atonal Ambient] - Eurorack and Eventide Space

Published on Dec 28, 2017 Alastair Wilson

"A dark, atonal, semi-self-generating modular patch using a small Eurorack setup sent through an Eventide Space hall reverb, using Ableton Live as a tempo source. No other processing has been applied.

I stupidly forgot to document the patch over on Modular Grid before I unpatched it, but here's the setup I used:
https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/561390

Good luck recreating it!
It's essentially FM on each Mother 32 oscillator by their respective LFOs, with Maths providing some slow modulation. One VCF output from a Mother 32 is patched into the external audio input of the other via Veils. The rest of that cable kraken is just adding subtleties and interest to the patch! The Mother 32s are panned apart into the stereo inputs of the Eventide Space.

Many people love the Blackhole algorithm on the Space, but I actually prefer Hall for huge, evil ambiences. It's a very dark reverb that works perfectly for patches like this one."
