System80 850, a Multi-function Modulation Source Eurorack Module

Published on Jan 23, 2018 System80

"Overview of the System80 850 Eurorack utility module with a little preview of our upcoming drum machine."

The 850 was first posted here. The following are some details from System80.

"The 850 is a fully analog utility module that combines a voltage controlled LFO, Sample & Hold, Noise source, and a Slew Limiter. The S&H section is normalized to Pink Noise (random) or any of the outputs of the LFO without patching. The output of the S&H circuit is normalized to the Slew Limiter input, allowing slew to be added to the S&H signal. The internal clock driving the S&H doubles as an auxiliary triangle shape LFO. The main voltage controlled LFO features an adjustable delay circuit triggered by an external rising pulse, allowing a gradual increase in LFO amplitude after a reset pulse.

Features

Voltage controlled LFO with selectable sine, triangle, ramp and square output
LFO gate/reset input and adjustable rise time after reset
S&H with internal clock, external clock, and external sample input
Auxiliary triangle LFO output from S&H clock
White and Pink noise sources
Slew Limiter with input normalization to S&H output or S&H clock pulse
Open Source

850 is open source hardware. The design files are available on Github"

Moog DFAM Analog Drum Synth Demo

Published on Jan 23, 2018 Perfect Circuit Audio

"We went to the Moog House Of Electornicus where we were able to try out the new DFAM (Drummer From Another Mother) and make this video. The first half of the video shows the DFAM being CV controlled and Triggered by a Malekko Voltage Block and Varigate 8+, in the second part we used the built in 8 step sequencer to sequence the DFAM. The sound from both videos is coming from only one DFAM.

"String synthesizer with a vocoder.

The string section starts with an oscillator bank using octave dividers, followed by a complex mixer, an equalizer and the ensemble effect, just like string machines from the 70's. A single registration knob sweeps through mixer and EQ settings for Violin, Viola, Cello, Brass, Organ, Choir and more for creating rich and creamy sonic textures.

The Solo section is a 16-voice synthesizer that complements the string sounds. A single Tone knob sweeps through many useful settings. Solo is the sidekick to the strings, but it is powerful enough to be the lead character every now and then.

The Vocoder replaces the equalizer in the string section with the filter bank that models the vocal tract from the speech input. This can produce quite intelligible speech or singing using the fully polyphonic oscillator bank. Formants can be modified, which can result in a perceived change of gender. Adjustable jitter of the string oscillators renders the voice hoarse, creaky or a complete whisper. Solo can pass through the Vocoder or play in parallel.

The Freeze button lets you freeze a short speech fragment, which is then repeated by the Vocoder whenever a key is pressed. Change of playback speed, like faster, backwards or a complete stop are possible and fun, as well as formant change.

A novel Tweak function allows for modification or modulation of details, like e.g. the solo cutoff frequency or the Chorus LFO rate. It is similar to a modulation matrix, but it also allows to alter implicit settings with a fixed value or an offset.

Three Effects operate simultaneously - Animate is in fact a modulation of the string or vocoder registration, while a Phaser ist a must for any decent string machine. A high quality Reverb with adjustable size can be mixed to the output.

STVC comes with a high quality gooseneck microphone that plugs right into the front panel where it belongs.

Rare Italian preset synth with rhythm section.

Rhythm section has: Waltz, Swing, Rock, Accomp.  Not sure what's before Rock.  Tempo and Volume knobs.  Accomp is white so I'm guessing it's the on/off toggle.

Instrument sectio has: Flute, Reed, Strings, Brill, Vibrato.  Brill is likely a brilliance effect.  Volume knob and On/Off switch.

AJH Synth Mega Phase 12 Demo Modular Synth Jam Just Out Of The Box!

Published on Jan 23, 2018 SonicVoltage

"AJH Synth Mega Phase 12 is AJH Synth's latest Eurorack Module. I took it for a spin and recorded a live modular jam for a first hands-on check.

I simply plugged the AJH Synth Mega Phase 12 in my small test eurorack case with a few more modules and started messing around with it. After putting a few notes together on the Eloquencer I hit the Record button and recorded the live modular jam... rough but fun.

The patch is pretty simple.
The Winter Modular Eloquencer drives the beat with
Kick & Snare: Mutable Instruments Peaks
Hats: Analogue Solutions HH8

Sequenced Synth Source Sound: Erica Synth Pico Voice (just Gate and Pitch. Nothing plugged into the CV Parameter Input)

The single synth sound from the Pico Voice goes straight into Input 1 on the AJH Synth Mega Phase 12. Just one synth line for all the synth sounds you here processed by the Mega Phase

From the Mega Phase 2, the Wet Out goes into the Mutable Instruments Rings and back into the Mega Phase Input 2 for some noise feedback effects

I use an LFO from the Xaoc Devices Batumi to take over the Mega Phase 12 internal LFO (only when the Batumi is plugged into the FCV1 Input on the Mega Phase)"

George Mattson Announces His Retirement and the Division 6 SWAN II Eurorack System

This one is in via George Mattson of Mattson Mini Modular. Back on September 15, 2007, I posted a little teaser that would eventually launch Mattson back into the synth manufacturing world. He is the man behind the Syntar - the original keytar synthesizer, and the SWAN (Syntar Without A Neck) was the follow-up non-keytar version. It's fitting and an honor that George Mattson is announcing his retirement and a new SWAN here on MATRIXSYNTH.

"Hello to all of my dear synth friends, customers, and associates.

After 45 years of involvement in the synthesizer community, it is time for me to retire.

The community is on the right track with some extremely talented, enthusiastic people that can carry on the vision while I step back and focus on actually learning to play the gear I have acquired throughout the years. What a concept…

I thank all of you for the support and friendship that you have provided to me throughout the years. It has been very humbling and I bow to all of you.

I am currently working on my last system design along with my little brother Scott Rise of Division 6. He will be the “manufacturer” and sales point for the S.W.A.N. II.

It’s basically a 60HP 3U complete system. It has 3 VCOs and two separate voice chains. It contains a sequencer, arpeggiator, and the VCOs can be split to upper/lower priority for duophonic operations.

The main 60HP unit has Basic I/O.

For patching ability, there will be a 24HP expander that provides access to more I/O. It will also have sequencer program save/recall functions and the ability to set MIDI channels via the control panel. The two VCF notch outputs will also be accessible.

The main system VCOs will have continuously variable waveform mixing between triangle, square, and saw outputs similar to the EML 101 style of mixing. Both VCFs will also have continuously variable mode mixing between LP, BP, and HP, also like the EML 101.

There will be a 20HP expander panel that will allow for VC control of the VCO waveform mixing and the VCF mode mixing, along with a couple of cascaded buffered multiples and a couple of cascaded clock dividers/square wave sub generators.

That’s it in a nutshell. I’ve been working on this since May of last year and have been trying to balance my time between this design and getting ready to retire.

Price point? Not enough info yet to determine. Probably under $1K for the main unit.
Release date? June/July? As soon as we can. We may crowdfund manufacturing, but we need to accumulate more data first.

Once I have retired, I will still be doing custom system builds. I can’t totally pull away from this art.

Again, thank all of you for your support, and I’ll see you at Knobcon.

George Mattson"

Both models feature beefed-up synth engines, with a proper second oscillator and a whole ton of patching options to fully integrate with your modular setup."

SSSR Labs - SM630 AWS / Alisa 1377 Waveshaper

Published on Jan 23, 2018 DivKidVideo

"Here's the rather awesome SM630 AWS from SSSR Labs. AWS stands for Alisa Waveshaper, which is based on the soviet synthesiser the Alisa 1377. It builds on the design of the 'harmonics' wave shaper on the soviet synths and expands the features and sound with added voltage control and a dry wet blend. The module works beautifully with the Kotelnikov which I suggest you watch my video for below ;) . It's a great wave-folding VCA based design with added feedback and filter to switch between 3 different colours of saturation."

005//Bittersweet Memories [Melodic Ambient] - 2x Mother 32 Modular, Eventide Space and Timefactor

Published on Jan 23, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"A pensive, melodic, semi-self-generating modular patch using a small Eurorack setup sent through an Eventide Timefactor on band delay setting and an Eventide Space black hole reverb. No other processing has been applied.

The patch is semi-random; the lower Mother 32 supplies an invisible sequence with the Assign output set to random stepped voltage. This random voltage is patched to the Run/Stop input of the higher Mother 32, randomly starting and stopping its sequence, which is how the sequence moves so slowly. The lower Mother 32 supplies the bass drone, with Maths changing its pitch occasionally. The Minimod OSC supplies a higher pitch, and a Mother 32 Noise output supplies the 'wind'. The wind's 'swooshing' comes from the Timefactor; the delays are band-pass filtered with the cutoff frequency modulated by an internal LFO, creating the lovely resonant delays.:

All vocal parts recorded using the internal mic, with lead vocal processed through the internal guitar amp simulator: the original 1979 vocal was played back through a VOX AC30 guitar amp to get that sound.

Everything here mixed on the iPad as well, with lots of effects not fazing it in the slightest.

"Here is my interactive organ pipe auditioner, based on the 'trendline' harmonic fingerprint system described here - http://colinpykett.org.uk/parameter-e...

The usual waveform display, but I have hijacked the metronome to use it to display log/log harmonics.

The idea is that a very small number of parameters can accurately describe the harmonic fingerprint of the sustain phase of a note generated by an organ pipe. This thing - running on the Mac but again, the Pi Synth codebase so it will run trivially on a Pi Zero - lets me twiddle knobs and instantly explore the entire parametric space.

The methodology desribed by Pykett requires 4 floats to describe a pipe. I have modified this to add 2 more parameters that allow an individual harmonic in the fingerprint to be boosted or cut, which lets a single non-trendline outlier harmonic be correctly modelled. Also I have allowed the 'even harmonic cut' to be an 'even harmonic cut/boost'.

The six parameters are mapped to 6 MIDI CCs, and I can sit sit and twiddle. Tunelessly. But allowing A/B listening against a field recording to rapidly converge to an accurate setting for a given rank at a given note. Nice."

Joe Hertz - Access Virus TI2 Synth - Gear Guide

Published on Jan 23, 2018 FACTmagazine

"A must-have synth according to the Brixton producer.

Late last year, electronic R&B rising star Joe Hertz treated us to an excellent Against The Clock at his South London studio. But, we wondered at the time, what's the deal with the Virus TI2 bit of hardware by Access he used during that session?

We asked Joe to give us rundown of that most treasured instrument, explaining to us why the Virus TI2 is one of the most unique synths on the market.

In the video, Joe breaks down its key features and demonstrates how easy, versatile and user-friendly it is. One word: want."

"For the last 24 hours this theme was bugging my mind. I looked for the appropriate arrangement, and it came out as you can see.
Using: Roland JV-1080 for Symphonique drums and strings/horns, Roland JX-03 for lead, ARP Odyssey for bass and Analog Keys for drums and sequences. Also, using Zoom MS70CDR and Neunaber Slate for effects. Oh, yes: and Arturia Keystep is sequencing the JV-1080.

Buchla Flute Feedback Patch clip

"Late night weirdo patch on the Buchla - featuring the 218e + Grayscale DAO + 230r + 281e + 292e + 206e .... into reverb.

I might experiment and develop this patch, for now though... just a quick clip to help me recall these tones.

218e is massively fun and a deep expressive interface, and so fast to patch!

Thank you for checking out my noise :)
Cheers, - Djangosfire"
