Waldorf STVC at NAMM 2018 - Just Music

Published on Jan 29, 2018 Earmonkey Music

"Sitting down cold with really no idea what was going to meet my ears, I was pretty impressed by how lovely this Waldorf STVC sounded. I hear people say it's just a Streichfett in a keyboard, but I don't know since I don't have a Streichfett. All I know is that this makes a great pad machine. Solidly built and felt really great. Lots of movement and morphing going on"

New Book on the History and Impact of MIDI, "Mad Skills: MIDI and Music Technology in the 20th Century"

Mad Skills: MIDI and Music Technology in the 20th Century is a new book from Ryan A. Diduck set to be released on March 13. It is currently available for pre-order on Amazon.

The following is a quick intro from Ryan:

Growing from my PhD research at McGill University, under Jonathan Sterne's supervision, Mad Skills is a timely cultural history of MIDI — as you know, the most ubiquitous and yet invisible technology across the past thirty-five years of music making. In the book, I situate MIDI within a century's worth of innovation in musical instrument design, and chronicle the industrial and social forces that guided electronic music on toward its present trajectory. I'm honored that the revered British Ethnomusicologist Georgina Born wrote the book's foreword, and London-based Repeater Books will release Mad Skills in March 2018.

Here's what people are saying so far:

"Mad Skills is a history of electronic music technology, of scraps over standards, and of music's relationship to capital in the twentieth century. Through deep dives into archives, original interviews, and an aptitude for the Marxian archaeology of electronics, Diduck opens the black box of MIDI for all to see and hear." – Ben Tausig, Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology, Stony Brook University.

'Most people have no idea what MIDI is, even though it undergirds and regulates a substantial swathe of the sounds they listen to and love. In Ryan Alexander Diduck’s deeply researched telling – a biography of a technology, with a caustic critical edge – MIDI takes on a personality of its own even as it standardizes global music-production to a hitherto unimaginable degree. Blending technical knowledge, business history, and cultural polemic, Mad Skills is a sharp study of a human invention that stamped its post-human character over an entire era of pop.' – Simon Reynolds, author of Retromania and Energy Flash: A Journey Through Rave Music and Dance Culture

"A deep/clear read on historical and SOCIAL development of machine music; wisdom about MIDI finally.
– Dan Lopatin, aka Oneohtrix Point Never"

[Gear demo] Buchla + Analog Keys

Published on Jan 29, 2018 repeatle

"I've read some threads online where people wonder if it's possible to control a Buchla system from the Elektron Analog Keys or Analog Four.

It works perfectly. You need to adjust a few things on the Elektron unit. 10v gate plus 1.2 v/oct. It's possible to save these settings so it's a really easy way to have a great sequencer for your Buchla.

You can use slides, accents, trig conditions etc.

Not many sequencers can control a Buchla system like this!"

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

Some pics of the inside. This one is in via John Ryan, via this auction

"Refurbs:

Cleaned all pots/switches
No notorious black gunk on the board (this was a problem with these)
Replaced every electrolytic capacitor with new ones
Replaced all the faders with brand new ones

Modifications:
Changed it so Oscilator 2 pitch change now goes up/down a little more than an octave
Added 1/4 inch output jack
Added LFO speed switch that gives option for normal/fast/slow LFO
Modified it for better gate response
Increased audio output level
Change Ring Mod input from Osc 1 square only to post-switch/pre-mixer Osc 1

Features:
The MG-1 includes:

Two oscillators with sync & detune, one producing either a Square or Sawtooth waveform, with the other producing either a Pulse or Sawtooth waveform.
One 24db/oct low pass filter/VCF, that can use the envelope generator, has three-position keyboard tracking, and is capable of self oscillation.
Three-part envelope generator, with separately adjustable Attack and Decay or Release, and selectable Sustain on or off. The Envelope Generator can be triggered by either the keyboard, or the LFO.
Oscillator 2 can be tuned independently or hard-synced to Oscillator 1.
Noise generator. (Digital Pseudo-Random Noise)
Ring modulation (called "Bell Tone" this is Amplitude Modulation of VCO 1 and 2).
Polyphonic oscillator. This is a divide-down square wave generator. It is routed to the VCF and the VCA.
LFO that can modulate the oscillators and the filter using a Triangle, square or random Sample and Hold waveform
Voltage controlled amplifier with Keyed, Hold, and Envelope modes (accessed via 3-way switch, misleadingly only labelled "Tone Sources" but also affects Poly signal)
Portamento (called "Glide")
External Control inputs for pre-MIDI CV/Gate."

"In 1998, after several years without producing a single FM synthesizer, Yamaha released a new FM powerhouse...the FS1R. This little beast is far from your average FM synthesizer. Not only is it an eight-Operator variant, as opposed to the six- and four-Operator FM of the DX/TX lines, but it also features a new technology called Formant Shaping Synthesis. Formants are the spectral patterns making up the sounds of human speech. This allows for the creation of vocal like timbres but can also be applied in many different ways to create incredibly unique sounds that you won't find on any other synths."

FAT Freebass FB383 & MAM FB33

"Famous German made TB303 clone sold under different names:
MAM MB33
Freebass FB-383

This is the Orange and silver version, I also have the older black version for sale. Perfect condition.

The MB 33 is a rack-mounted TB-303 clone released in the mid-nineties by German synth maker MAM (Music And More). It's basically identical to the Freebass 383 (which had a different front-panel design). It is a true analog monophonic bass synthesizer with MIDI implementation so you can create 303-like bass lines from your sequencer. Its single VCO offers the same two basic waveforms as the TB-303: a sawtooth and square wave. But in the MB 33 they can be mixed together for a more interesting tone than the 303 could originally produce.

Additional knobs control the VCO tuning, filter frequency cutoff, resonance, envelope mod amount, envelope decay time and accent intensity - the same controls found on the TB-303! The 24dB lowpass filter can also produce the characteristic sound of the 18 dB filter used in the original 303. There's also an auto-slide function (4 octave range) for producing those 303-style slides and a separate input for filtering external signals through it. Unfortunately there is no program storage."

006//R.E.M. [Melodic Ambient] - Mother 32 and Eventide Space

Published on Jan 29, 2018 Alastair Wilson

"A dark, melodic, semi-self-generating patch made on 1 Mother 32 sent through an Eventide Space hall reverb. No other processing has been applied.

After 001//Slumber, I wanted to see whether I could make a similar patch using just 1 Mother 32, without using any processing inside Ableton, and without using an external MIDI clock - just a Mother 32 and an Eventide Space being recorded. This is the result, which was much better than I expected!

The patch is semi-random, as the notes are sequenced. My main issues were sequence speed, and randomness; to slow the sequence down to below the internal tempo limit, I patched the square LFO to the Run/Stop input, causing the sequencer to turn off and on. To get more than 1 random voltage source I used the KB output, which, when mixed with other modulations, isn't obvious that the 'random' voltages are just following the note pitches.

If you want to recreate this patch, you can find it here:

Roland JD-XA Sound Demo

Published on Jan 29, 2018 Stochastic Design

"In this video, we show a few patches we've created, and use the onboard sequencer for riffs associated with the sounds. Just a first look, nothing too remarkable. Let us know in the comments if you would like to see more in-depth sound design on this red beast!

The JD-XA has been described both as the spiritual successor to the JD-800, and a sound designer's dream.

The physical design and the way some features have been implemented seems to have prevented it from being universally praised, but the sonic capabilities of the hybrid analogue/digital synth engine are interesting."
