"I have been debating selling my Roland JX-3P (well, trading it for my old Virus kB, because I just love that keybed, even though I've got the TI). So of course I brought my JX-3P out and tested it out. Then I tested it against my System 8. Doing that made me just appreciate the JX more. Sigh. I don’t know why it is so difficult to part with this stuff. But when I played this sound (that you hear at the beginning), it just sang to me. I loved the noise that seems to become additive with more notes. It somehow helps create the tone I’m going for, especially when sent through the Strymon Volante pedal. It’s not that the System 8 doesn’t sound similar (in fact, I think I created this sound on the S8 first and then ported it over to the JX), it does, but it doesn’t impart any noise, or what I would call “character”. It just sounds lifeless in comparison. And so I’m left with what I’m always left with. More gear, because I find all my stuff useful and fun.

Well, I’m sure I could just do the trade. I bet any number of synths I have could make this sound. It didn’t even use ‘that famous Roland Chorus’. I probably spend more time trying to tell myself I can sell my gear, and then don’t, than I do playing the gear for music.

But I guess this time I used it to my advantage. I made a song of it.

"The intro bassline came after noodling with volca keys sequenced by my old and trustworthy mc505. I programmed a basic beat. It wasn't going anywhere in the beginning but instantly things started to take shape and I grasped my minilogue to play the main riff progression layered with a pad from my virus TI. Then I started singing the chorus and the main body of the track was almost ready . This song almost wrote itself from an initial moment of machine frustration . That's why we never give up when things don't go well."

"Following up on the success of the popular Virus, Access unleashed an upgraded model in 1999, the Virus B. The original Virus A had 12-voice polyphony, but the new OS in the Virus B doubles the polyphony from 12- to 24-voices and the oscillators, from 2 to 3 per voice. The new OS also added an enhanced programmable 32-band vocoder. There are now up to 82 simultaneous effects, a retro-phaser (6-stage stereo phaser with 24 filter-poles), chorus/flanger, ring modulator, multiple forms of distortion, an analog boost algorithm, and an envelope follower. Up to five FM (Frequency Modulation) modes are also on-board now and many new sounds have been created for this bigger and better version of the Virus.

OS 4.0 was released in late 2000 with even more amazing features! The update is downloadable from Access (free of charge!) and comes installed in all new Virus synths to ship after its release. OS 4.0 makes the Virus one of the best analog modeling synthesizers to date! Complete control of parameters is available via MIDI. "Adaptive Control Smoothing" ensures ultra smooth parameter changes. There's also a free Emagic sound-driver based Editor/Librarian for Windows and MacOS."

The Access Virus Has Been Discontinued

According to Amazona.de, the Access Virus has been officially discontinued.

Many people have already suspected it: Access mastermind Christoph Kemper has confirmed to us that the Access Virus TI2 has no longer been produced for a few months. There were many clues, as the last Access Virus TI2 series was released in 2009. The Virus TI2 series included the Polar, Snow, Darkstar and Desktop models. Only power supplies and rackmounts can be found on the Access Virus website.

The move away from Access Virus could have something to do with the fact that Christoph Kemper discovered his love for amp propiling in 2011 and released the first Kemper Amp, which is still a complete success today. Despite this success, Access had a stand at Superbooth 2018 and we were able to ask Christoph Kemper about plans for new synthesizers.

Christoph Kemper confirmed that he is still interested in synthesizers, but is currently at full capacity with the Kemper amps. It became clear that his company did not have the capacity to develop Kemper amps and Access synthesizers at the same time. In the interview it was suggested that there might be an Access Virus TI3, but he didn't want to specify."

"Welcome to the 59th edition of my Home Concert series. In this set I present five new Ambient tracks. I used a few instruments, which I had not in my studio for a while. Like the Moogerfooger Ringmodulator, the Modular system and the Waldorf Microwave 1 (in the rack off screen). Music was arranged in Bitwig using midi for the hardware synths and also a few software instruments. My main controller is the Midi Fighter Twister with a script for Bitwig.
