Virus Jam by Aquifex

Live Synth Jam 021015 - Virus TI/Axis-49 + ESQ-1 + Volca Keys + Mininova + TR-8

"All this talk of viruses in every corner of the media made me think of this DAWless jam I made many years ago with my trusty Access Virus TI and the wacky C-Thru Music Axis-49 hex key controller (plus Kenton USB MIDI host).

One notable thing: I was able to sell two short segments of the music as bumpers for a series of training videos at my last company. I think it was the first money I made from any music project. :-)

Speaking if viruses, everyone be safe out there."

Axis 64 Midi controller - Harmonic table keyboard

via this auction

"AXiS is a made-to-order professional quality velocity sensitive MIDI controller with a tough metal case and familiar on-board controls. There are various benefits to playing on the Harmonic Table note arrangement. For beginners it's like a shortcut to playing music. And for advanced players? Check out the Jordan Rudress videos on youtube. It allows note combinations that would be impossible on any other keyboard.

There are 192 keys, so it's like buying three 64-note keyboards all in one.

MIDI controls
The AXiS is a versatile MIDI master keyboard. Onboard are pitch bend and mod wheels, and two rotary controls. There are sockets for two foot controls or footswitches. The AXiS can calibrate almost any external control with ease.

Operation
In order to produce an even more versatile and useful unit, they've significantly upgraded the firmware. AXiS can now work more efficiently with other products such as Logic and Ableton Live, and can be more readily used with complex stage and studio set-ups as well as for microtonal work. I've installed the latest firmware. Check out the Axis 64 website. Buy it in the USA and save shipping and time.. and don't pay the new price!

DIY Isomorphic Keyboard project

YouTube Uploaded by analogstatic on Mar 22, 2011

"This is a velocity sensitive MIDI isomorphic keyboard. 192 total keys. The project came out of Louisville Soundbuilders, a fortnightly meeting of circuitbenders, synth engineers and experimental musicians. After seeing a couple of my failed variations of a single-bus isomorphic keyboard, Tim was intrigued enough to design one even better. He designed multiple PCBs that sandwich together with multiple switch types for velocity sensitive keypresses.

More development on the way! We're working on molds/methods for making hexagonal keycaps. And I'm working on an Arduino-based controller as an alternative to the midibox controller Tim has working already.

Fur Elise on the AXiS 49

YouTube via JLMoriart | Feb 25, 2011 |

"A performance of Fur Elise on my Jammer, an isomorphic keyboard with the "Wicki-Hayden Note Layout", converted from an AXiS 49 from C-Thru Music. It's a little less polished than I'd like, but I need to move on to new projects- so here it is!

I've rearranged my keytops to fit the W/H layout, and I'm software freely available from Ken Rushton (aka MusicScienceGuy) whom you can email for more information.

Penta on the AXiS-49

YouTube via JLMoriart | November 20, 2010 | 1 likes, 0 dislikes

"This is an improv using mainly the pentatonic scale. The pentatonic scale falls in a tight block in the center of the layout making for some really fun runs and glissandi.

I'm using the "Axis Tweaker" application which converts my axis-49 into a jammer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jammer_keyboard).

Jammer's Voyage

YouTube via JLMoriart | October 29, 2010

"I'm using the "Axis Tweaker" application which, besides converting your axis-49's to jammers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jammer_keyboard), also remaps your QWERTY keyboard to that same isomorphic note layout. (Isomorphic = same fingering in every key.)

I send midi out from the Tweaker to GarageBand where I play along with a backing track I made with a chord progression similar to (the same as?) "Maiden Voyage" by Herbie Hancock.

"A rough performance of one of my first original pieces written specifically for the axis-49 set to a wicki/hayden layout, aka Jammer, an imitation of the (now defunct) Thummer.

*EDIT* If you're not impressed, check out some of my newer videos, I'm improving I think =P"

AXiS 49 - EPIC Dance Track (edit)

"This me playing my new trance-ish song on my AXiS 49 (a harmonic table keyboard).

The actual song is longer, but I'm entering a contest where the submitted videos should be no longer than one minute, so I had to cut it down a bit ;-)

If you're interested in the whole song, I posted the full audio version on http://www.myspace.com/dageorg
Feel free to add me on myspace

AXiS 49 - Harmonic Table Keyboard, with Solo

YouTube via guitarDouchebaggery. via brian c.
" I'm playing the AXiS for more than a month now and since there are hardly any videos of the 49 version on youtube, I thought I'll make one.

I'm not a real keyboardist though, so don't overly criticise my solo, haha

The thing I'm using to do the pitchbending etc. is a Korg nanoPad.

You can find more infos about the AXiS 49 on http://www.c-thrumusic.com/"

Georg F - Purple Organ

" This is a jam type of song where I'm soloing on guitar, bass and organ (with the AXiS) + some riffage.

I tried to make it sound like a certain band that's famous for it's use of the hammond organ... something with "purple"....

For anyone who's interested in the gear:
Epiphone SG into an Orange Tiny Terror
Fender Richie Kotzen Tele into a Cornford Roadhouse 30
Warmoth Strat into a BB Preamp into an Orange Tiny Terror

All Guitar Amps went into a Mesa Boogie Roadking 2x12 in my isolation box.

AXiS 49 used a Native Instruments B4 II plugin

Squier Jazz Bass into a Focusrite Twintrack Pro Platinum (direct)

The silly cloud animation was done with FlightGear (free flight simluator)

I hope everything in the video is in sync thanks for watching"

Muff Wiggler Forum July 2009 Gathering

YouTube via scootermccrae

"On July 18th, 2009, I had a number of strangers who I know (or know of) from the muggwiggler.com forum come to my apartment to have fun working with the modular analog audio equipment I had lying around or the machinery they brought over themselves to integrate into whatever systems we were spontaneously creating.

So there was much drunken debauchery and noise-making to be had amongst the participants.

Keep in mind that this is just a non-linear overview of the day that demonstrates how people traveled from one room to another to patch cables and twiddled knobs. Over the course of the nine hours that people spent in my apartment, there were many audio breakthroughs and learning experiences that would be impossible to document here without a far more thorough camerperson than myself at the helm.

Needless to say, as the cameraperson, I'm not in this video -- so it's NOT a Mondo Modular episode (so I apologize to any subscribers expecting otherwise).

Please enjoy and thanks as always for checking this out.

A Janko Musical Keyboard Project

Click here for another Janko DIY project. The following is a short blurb from the site: "Have you ever thought about why the keys are arranged the way they are on a piano? The piano keyboard is extremely well established and few people question if its a good or bad keyboard layout. It has taken quite some time for me to realize that the piano keyboard really couldn't be an ingenious device. From a historical viewpoint the key arrangement on the piano is actually a remodification of some really old designs that were used in the renaissance period. The Janko keyboard is named after its inventor Paul von Janko which was a hungarian matematician. Indeed I could spend all day and night just talking about the theory and background of the piano keyboard versus the so called Janko keyboard and I believe this wikipedia article explains it pretty good."

The site mentions the only manufacturer of Janko keyboards is a Japanese company called Chromatone. Although similar to the C-Thru Axis controllers it is different. I did a little digging and according to this site: "C Thru Music's harmonic table and the Shape of Music's Melodic Table are both based on Tonnetz by Euler and Riemann(http://www.thummer.com/blog/2007/06/eulers-tonnetz.html , http://members.cox.net/dysartp/traditionalTonnetz.html)." Be sure to see this thread for more info on alternate keyboard controllers. Also see the labels below for prior posts here on MATRIXSYNTH.
