The Vanishing Night

video upload by davidryle

"Good things happen in pairs sometimes...

Two new Synthetic Sound Labs 1201 TZ-VC Oscillators are the main project center. I sent the lower tuned sine wave (modulator) to the higher tuned (carrier) phase modulation input. I routed the modifier through a vca with a random S&H amount to give it a little life. The modulator was pitch tracked from one of a pair of Matrix Algorithmic Composer modules from SSL. The carrier was pitch stable. The wave of the carrier is a triangle wave through the Grove Audio G294A LPF. It is the final tuned percussive sound trailing at the end with the drone.
The other paired oscillators were the drone duet played by the STG Soundlabs vco's through a Q107 SVF in low pass. The pair of STG VMS sequencers are the pitch source.
The bass part is a trio of Mos-Lab 901's and an SSL 1200 vco. They are low pass filtered with the LWSS M401 Multimode Filter/Resonator. The upper Q960 step sequencer is the pitch source.
The opening synthetic pan drum sound is a Q106 saw wave and the square wave output of the second Matrix module run through the Oakley Ring Modulator and a Q150 LPF. The Q106 is pitch controlled by taking the Matrix cv through a quantizer and then a S&H to limit the cv range.
The second percussive voice was the PWM output of the modulator 1201 through a Mega Ohm Audio MA20 vcf in high pass then a EHX Grand Canyon reverb and finally stereo phase shifters from the Lexicon MX200.
Snare sound is the SSL Woven Spirits (MI Plaits) and the Kick is the Delptronics LDB-2e. Percussive timings are handled by the Moon Modular 563 Trigger Sequencer.
The drone loop arpeggio is the Dove Audio D900 Mu-Seq into a Q106 saw wave to an EHX Canyon pedal in multi-tapped delay mode."

Sand Blind

Published on Sep 22, 2019 davidryle

"5U Large Format Modular Synthesizer. This self-playing piece is structured around a simple sequence from the synthesizers.com Q960 step sequencer.
It is generating a seven step "circle of fifths".
There are three VCO's - Synthetic Sound Labs Double-DekaUltrasonic VCO, an SSL VCO through a 5-Pulser and a trio of Mos Lab 901's and 904-B filter.
The DDVCO is tuned to the low root, the Mos Lab's are tuned to a ninth above and the SSL is a fifth above that. The mix from a STG Soundlabs mixer is then run to an Empress reverb in modulation mode and a TC Electronic tape delay DSP from the D-Two rack delay.
A secondary voice from the Sputnik West Coast Random Source module to a FSFX Braids in Harmonic mode is the detuned sliding discordant background melody. It has a slew integrator FM modulation to give it the slowly bending pitch effect. Timbre and Color are modulated from the WCRS as well. It is further flanged by an SSL Digital Delay.
Several filters (dotcom Q107, STG Sea Devils, Yusynth Arp 4072 and a Mega Ohm Audio CdS) are being pinged by various envelopes - some looping. They are STG Soundlabs EG, Q109's and Oakley Sound Labs VCADSR (Krisp1 build).
A pair of STG Voltage Mini Stores are producing a rapid loop step sequence to a pair of Q106's which come and go in the background.
There are a couple of noise pads in the background. One is from a pink noise to an Oakley VCSVF in band pass which is modulated from the WCRS and an LFO then on to a Strymon Blue Sky pedal. The other is a quick fluttering high white noise sound through an Encore frequency shifter (which is pitch modulated from a Q960 sequencer) and then sent to a Jurgen Haible Tau "Pipe" Phaser.
Further gate and LFO timing is handled with the Moon Modular M563 Trigger Sequencer, the SSL V-Gates, a pair of Q962 Sequential Switches and Q961 Interfaces.
Other modular delays involved are the Modcan 73B Dual Delay and a custom Behringer DD400 digital delay."

EQD

Published on Nov 27, 2016 Richard Galbraith

Update: this video was pulled and re-uploaded as a shorter version which you can find here.

"This was recorded in two overdubbed takes. The first take is a bed of deep synth tones, provided by my MU modular, with added Arturia Microbrute and Mutable Instruments Rings in Easter Egg mode.

The second take is a Sela cajon which I mic'd with two mics: one for cajon audio and the other plugged into the Synthesizers.com instrument interface in order to trigger Rings. Thus, in this take you can hear the strumming sound of Rings with every cajon hit.

Key modules include Synthesizers.com's oscillators, Q150 low pass filter, and quantizer bank; Megaohm Audio Delta low pass filter; SSL/Fritz Doubledeka oscillator; FSFX/Fritz Teezer oscillator, and the MOTM 480 band pass filter.

Reverb and effects by Valhalla DSP."

Megaohm Delta distortion

Megaohm Delta distortion from Richard Galbraith on Vimeo.

"Here's a patch highlighting the Megaohm Delta low pass filter, with some high resonance and FM settings. The arpeggiation is the result of two LFOs (Grove Audio) and a joystick (Grove Audio) being fed into a Synthesizers.com Q171 quantizer, which then drives a dotcom Q106 VCO. Two waveforms from this oscillator are used, the saw directly into the Delta, and the triangle first routed through the Ian Fritz/SSL 5 Pulser. The background is a rather uninspired sequence...a microbrute being sequenced by a Fritz/SSL Double Deka oscillator at low frequency. Both parts are given digital delay. Some Valhalla Room is added at the beginning and again towards the end."

Portable 5U/MU Modular Patching Demo (Box 22)

Published on Mar 19, 2016 alternatingbitmusic

"Often you see a finished patch running on Youtube so here is an unrehearsed patch just to demonstrate some options and ideas for on-the-fly patching. Wtih a Synthesizers.com Box 22 portable I come up with a dark little sequence illustrating manipulation sources and how some modules can work together.

Double Deka Sequence

Published on Dec 29, 2015 Richard Galbraith

"Taking a short break from my usual Renaissance recording, I decided to try something a little different. I recently got a Synthesizers.com quantizer bank (Q171). I don't have an analog sequencer, but I can use my SSL/Ian Fritz Double Deka oscillator as a 10 step sequencer. I can get three simultaneous lines out of it, which I've done here.

I used two Synthesizers.com Q106 oscillators and an Ian Fritz Teezer VCO (made by Free State FX). Filters used are synthesizers.com Q150, Q107, MOTM 480, and the MegaOhm Delta LPF.

I ran the outputs into separate instances of Valhalla Ubermod for delay, and then into an instance of Valhalla Room."

Starting somewhere...

Published on Sep 24, 2013 Richard Galbraith·4 videos

"This my first attempt at a (semi) live modular performance (I added some drums part of the way through). First take on the modular, and first take on the drums. Kind of random. Since I normally multitrack everything, I just wanted to see if I could work this way.... The modular is driven by Numerology, routed through an MOTM-650 midi-cv converter. Modules are synthesizers.com, MegaOhm Audio, MOTM, SSL, and Grove Audio. Drums are Roland v-drums (TD-12)."

Reset - "They Found Me"

Published on Sep 22, 2013 davidryle·126 videos

"Some sketchy modular synth clock works and a cryptic radio voice. The radio is randomly tuned with a Q117 S&H module and a Q125 Signal Processor module before being sent to a Mega Ohm Audio LFO2 controlled stage of an STG Signal Amplifier module. SImple enough?

The piece is in 5/4 and various multiplications of the clock. The beat one of the 5/4 measure is resetting most of the faster clock multiples and forcing the half beats and such. It is a nice stuttering effect. The Modcan 73B delay is using a staggered sync on its' channels for a delay which almost falls apart and regroups again on each bar. Notice the delay never changes the pitch as most delay's would. Nice. Some filter modulation of the 73B is happening using two LFO's. The sequence into the 73B is from the Q960 which is the main 5/4 clock sequence.

The title is a combination of the reset function happening musically and the only words I could identify in the broken radio audio. Sort of a hide & seek message or something.

Fun stuff for an evening patchwork."
