Uptempo jam with Midicake ARP, Dreadbox Nymphes, Moog Minitaur, Mother 32, MSW-810, DrumBrute Impact

video upload by Jay Hosking

"A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

I've had this chord progression kicking around for a little while, the product of a voice-leading exercise I was doing. I was super happy with it but never able to incorporate it into a larger arrangement. Recently, I realized I could just run the chord progression through the Midicake ARP and get some inspiration on the song arrangement, and sure enough, that was all it took (along with a few amazing synthesizers and effects). Really happy with where this one ended up.

Full disclosure: I cut and paste a previous drum fill to the outro drum fill, because I felt the outro drum fill didn't match the quality of the earlier one. Seemed a more judicious approach than recording the whole thing again.

Thanks for listening.

Dirtywave M8 - chord progression sequence
Midicake ARP - four-part sequencing arranger for the chord progression
Kenton MIDI Thru - MIDI Thru out to five devices
DrumBrute Impact through Empress EchoSystem - Drums
Moog Mother 32 through Kinotone Ribbons - Slower mono synth
Michigan Synth Works MSW-810 through Hologram Chroma Console - Faster mono synth
Moog Minitaur through Boss DM-101 - Bass synth
Dreadbox Nymphes through Empress Reverb - Pad synth

Performed and recorded live (minus that small drum edit) to a multitrack recording, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

PlayFader PlayMates

video uploads by Play All Day

You might remember Play All Day from previous posts here.

Playlist:

1. PlayFader PlayMates
PlayFader meets @erfindungsbuero ERM Polygogo.

Headphones recommended.

Channel A:
CV - V/oct of Polygogo and multed into Natural Gate’s Control input to open up the decay time. Set to User Scale. Gate - Right-hand side Hit input on Natural Gate.

Channel B:
CV - Various modulation inputs on Polygogo. Set to 2v unquantised.
Gate - Left-hand side Hit input on Natural Gate.

Clock input, set to CV.- from @makenoisemusic Function EOC output.

PolyGogo X and Y outputs are split into separate sides of the Natural Gate so they can be independently gated. It’s all running through the @busycircuits MFX for some stereo glue and then onto the delicious Sealegs by @intellijel for delay vibes.

PlayGuide:
We start by setting each channel’s time division to different settings. Then we record a 16 step loop of both channels simultaneously, creating nice polyrhythms. Then we play around with the record arm of CV and Gate, essentially decoupling them so we can record just CV over the gate patterns in the Loop buffer. Then we overdub some different gate patterns by setting the channels to different divisions. We even play with 24ppn which is crazy fast but gives a nice effect. We overdub that again showing how you can endlessly play over your recordings. And we use Latch a lot, because we love Latch… a lot! Latch allows the CV output to be played live with the faders, over the top of the buffer contents. A quick double-tap of Latch releases the CV from the live fader position, and back to whatever’s in the Loop buffer.

Available for Pre-order now ❤️

In our next PlayMates video, PlayFader meets @noiseeng BIA & @michigan_synth_works SY0.5 - things get seriously wild..."

2. PF Clocked redux
PlayFader has dark side, don’t be fooled by all pretty colours 🙃

Our 2nd PlayMate video shows the less conventional and, frankly, crazy side of PlayFader. Hard to explain in detail what happened here but the main idea was to explore playing with the speed of the clock input. Recording patterns at slow clock rates and speeding up really fast.
Huge thanks to Paul’s Alex Bow for the idea!

Channel A is playing with BIA by Noise Engineering and Channel B is having fun with Michigan Synthworks SY0.5 and both are running into the mighty M T2D dual triode distortion by Sonocurrent.

Channel A:
CV - to the pitch and various modulation inputs on BIA via the fabulous Ochd by DivKid and Instruo.
Set to 5v un-quantised range.
Gate - BIA trigger input

Channel B:
CV - pitch input on the SY0.5
Set to 5v un-quantised range.
Gate - to trigger input of SY0.5

Hard to explain, but things go nuts. Due to the fact the looper and clock divisions are always tight, cool patterns emerge and when you speed the clock up you get interested low bit res waveforms and glitchy mayhem.

3. PlayFader PlayMates Pt2
Another little snippet of these PlayMates having fun. Slowing the clock coming into PlayFader allows you to record more into the 16 step buffer when it’s set to faster decisions. We then speed up the clock and all kinds of interesting happen.

In case you didn’t already know, we’re open for pre-orders. Link in bio. And stay tuned for more episodes of PlayMates coming soon. If you have any suggestions of friends you’d like OlayFader to meet, let us know in the comments.

And if you can’t quite figure out what PlayFader is doing, check out the PlayData manuals on our website.

Love and patches,
Play All Day ❤️

MSW SY-1 / Pearl Syncussion Modifications

video upload by Maffez Synthmods

"Got the Syncussion recreation by Michigan Synth Werks recently and could finally go fully in with modifications, something I would have never dared to do with my old Pearl SY-1. On this page here you find a documentation of DIY modifications for this iconic drum synthesiser (including filter resonance, vco hard sync, and oscillator mode switching at audio rates): https://maffez.com/?page_id=3864."

Don't Bore Us

video upload by Cylob Sonic Research

"The Michigan Synth Works MSW-810 is a replica of a Roland analog monosynth from 1983, a cousin of the much more famous MC-202. But it has its own distinct sound, somewhat beefy and powerful, reminiscent of even earlier Roland synths from the seventies. What will happen when the MSW-810 meets modern replicas of vintage Boss chorus pedals? Let's find out!

Putting in a cameo appearance is the Michigan Synth Works SY0.5, a eurorack adaptation of the vintage Pearl Syncussion. Everything controlled by two Launchpads together with some custom SuperCollider patches.

Eurorack cv presets - Traffic, Frames, Morphader, VC Transitions

video upload by John Schussler

"With the arrival of Traffic, a new module from Jasmine & Olive Trees, I find myself with several modules that do similar things around 'cv presets.'

The scenario I'm considering today is putting a single module (e.g. Basilimus Iteritas Alter from Noise Engineering) into different 'states' by simultaneously changing multiple cv inputs going to the module. This way you can get multiple 'instruments' out of a single module, in this case a variety of drums and percussion, which can then be sequenced.

There are other modules that do this as well (e.g. Endorphines Total Control), but these are the ones I happen to have. So, grain of salt and all that.

Sequencer is Pittsburgh Modular Micro Sequence. Clock source is Pam's Pro Workout.

Michigan Synth Works MSW 810 Analog Synthesizer

video upload by Michael Dykehouse

"The MSW-810 is a faithful recreation of the CMU-810 Monosynth which was designed as a synth expander for the 1983 CMU-800 computer music production system. At its core however, is the tone generator of the MC-202. In this clip the MSW 810 is producing all the sounds you hear including the drums. Available currently as a kit and will be available fully assembled in the fall of 2022."
