Open.Theremin - Open Source DIY Theremin

Published on Oct 30, 2016 Therminal C

"Short trailer mixing 2 videos about Open.Theremin & Retro Gaming.

I experimented with Open.Theremin, an opensource & DIY Theremin produced in Switzerland, by Gaudi Lab : http://www.gaudi.ch/OpenTheremin/

Open.Theremin is a great little theremin instrument, linear and playable. Compared to professional theremins, such as Moog Epro, there's a lack of response of the volume antenna, some latency, higher sensitivity to its environnement. Nonetheless, i think it's the cheapest and most playable theremin currently available. And it's totally open source, so you can help improve it :-) !

Open.Theremin.UNO is very sensitive to its environment and bad grounding. There's a filtering on the volume (which makes its response a bit slower than Moog theremin) to make it less sensitive. Nonetheless, the power adapter you will use will affect it a lot. If you have noise problems, try out different adaptors. USB power supply can be cheap and therefore not very recommended for that.

While preparing the video, i got the chance to do some beta testing with the new version, Open.Theremin v3.This newer version -v3- has a lot of great new functionalities: easy to built, easy calibration (all automatic!), manual fine tuning for adjustments (really great if you use Carolina Eyck's fingering technique), 3 registers, 8 different sound settings.

A huge thanks to:
- Urs Gaudenz (director of Gaudi LAb)for creating Open.Theremin & great collaboration
- Alain GilliƩron for helping me building Open.Theremin.UNO v2
- Thierry Frenkel for helping me to calibrate Open.Theremin.UNO v2
- « etheremin » FB's group, for sharing their experiments on the Open.Theremin.UNO v2 with me.
- Sylvain Ehinger for restoring my "Arcade Table"

NB : intro music "In the Cave" (composed by Therminal C) was played on an Epro Theremin.
