Tomorrow comes too soon | IDM music

video upload by MIDERA

"I've been really pining after my old Nord Drum 2. I can't believe how much the prices have gone up over the last few years. I bought mine for $650 and it had all this extra stuff. Sold it for the same in 2019... now, they go for over $1000. I really just want to get it back, sigh. I don't know whether I will or not because that's just a lot of money. Been trying to see if my Tempest or Machinedrum can pull off the same sounds, but there was something weirdly organic in that Nord Drum 2 that I can't quite seem to get out of these. The Monomachine was actually much closer, but it can't exactly pull off that sound either.

I dunno. I know I don't need this stuff, and my studio already feels overwhelmed with gear. Well... who knows. It's a simple problem, which I'm glad of, after everything last year. I'll take it as a good problem to have and be thankful about it.

Pulse | MIDERA - Downtempo IDM with Spectralis 2 and Sequential Prophet 10

video upload by MIDERA

"Just another track - used the Spectralis 2 and Sequential Prophet 10.

Tonight I can feel the development of a cold, a gift from my daughter who has been sick since the day before Easter.

I'm so tired... but I wanted to get this out there, just to be done with it.

Spectralis 2 Tutorial: Sending drums to analog filters tips and tricks

video upload by MIDERA

"I've been spending a lot of time with the Ensoniq Mirage and sampling drums (which come out sounding so good) and wondered whether I could beef up the drums within the spectralis itself. I realized that I could send the drums to the analog filters and then do all sorts of things with it.

Note that this doesn't have any melodic stuff in it and it's using a simple drum beat, but I figure that will help you understand what it is that's happening with the sounds. Hope it's of use to any Spectralis user or potential Spectralis users.

This WILL work for both Spectralis 1 and 2 units equally. There will be no difference in sound (unless you haven't yet performed the filter fix on your Spectralis 2, then it will sounds much darker on your unit).

LFMX: 24db LP Filter exponential FM
LFML: 24db LP Filter linear FM
MMFM: 12db MM Filter Exponential FM

"Befaco Rampage & EFFEXX & Valhalla Vintage Reverb at post processing. I recorded 10 minutes of noise and took snippets out of it to arrange them in a kind of collage in Logic. Some of these sounds received a special sonic character by adding some Valhalla reverb effects."

Gone | MIDERA - Downtempo IDM

video upload by MIDERA

"I have been debating selling my Roland JX-3P (well, trading it for my old Virus kB, because I just love that keybed, even though I've got the TI). So of course I brought my JX-3P out and tested it out. Then I tested it against my System 8. Doing that made me just appreciate the JX more. Sigh. I don’t know why it is so difficult to part with this stuff. But when I played this sound (that you hear at the beginning), it just sang to me. I loved the noise that seems to become additive with more notes. It somehow helps create the tone I’m going for, especially when sent through the Strymon Volante pedal. It’s not that the System 8 doesn’t sound similar (in fact, I think I created this sound on the S8 first and then ported it over to the JX), it does, but it doesn’t impart any noise, or what I would call “character”. It just sounds lifeless in comparison. And so I’m left with what I’m always left with. More gear, because I find all my stuff useful and fun.

Well, I’m sure I could just do the trade. I bet any number of synths I have could make this sound. It didn’t even use ‘that famous Roland Chorus’. I probably spend more time trying to tell myself I can sell my gear, and then don’t, than I do playing the gear for music.

But I guess this time I used it to my advantage. I made a song of it.

Gear:
Radikal Technologies Spectralis II (Drums, sequencing)
Virus TI (Pad parts and keys)
Roland JX-3P (intro part and similar sounds throughout)
Sequential Prophet 10 (synth part)
Strymon Volante (delay for JX-3P)
Eventide Blackhole VST (reverb)"

"I feel like I haven't written any real music in months. I try and then I give up. I wrote something recently and hated it. Then I wrote this piece. And also hated it. But I felt like if I didn't just finish it, record it, and post it, I'd keep this cycle up and make nothing new.

I'll keep trying. That's about all I can do.

Flute sounds with the string filter of the EFFEXX multi FX module.

video upload by Jörg Schaaf

"The EFFEXX's string filter does not only create short, percussive sounds. If you choose negative feedback and apply less filtering to the feedback path, you get some flutish sounds out of noise. This time, I increased the attack time of the noise and added some decay to the noise sound. The pitch once again is controlled with the MIDI2CV converter of the Delta CEP A2. The CV output connects direct to the control input of the EFFEXX.
The backing at the end of the short video is from the Accelerator. Still my favorite choice for subtractive polysynth sounds."

EFFEXX string filter example

video upload by Jörg Schaaf

"A snappy noiseshot from the Delta CEP A2 turns into something different in the EFFEXX multi FX module RT-1701. The delaytime of the string filter is controlled by the Delta's step sequencer. Maybe you have not noticed yet, that the step sequencer of the Delta CEP A2 does not only work with the internal sound engine but also with the KB-CV output of the Delta's MIDI2CV converter."

TNT Jam @Home

video upload by Jörg Schaaf

"German text below
After many years of abstinence from the stage, I had the chance to present my music live and in front of an audience on November 17, 2023. This was a big challenge and involved a lot of effort, but it was great fun. With this video I would like to thank everyone who attended my concert. To all my friends who unfortunately couldn't make it for various reasons, I would like to present a small excerpt of what they could hear and see this Friday in the 'Theater neben dem Turm'' in Marburg.

My rig was of course equipped with many Radikal Technologies instruments. In addition to the obligatory Spectralis 2, you can hear the Accelerator and two Delta CEP A2s. I would particularly like to mention Crumar's Mojo 61 as additional instruments. I love this Rhodes emulation. A Roland JD-08 and a Behringer K2 are also used, which can throw in a few bad sounds here and there.

The whole session was recorded with 24 tracks directly into the Allen & Heath CQ20B stage mixer, which I recently integrated into my setup for live events.

The main camera is a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K (BMPCC4K) with an MFT sensor. I especially love this sensor format because there are an incredible number of inexpensive vintage lenses that inspire creativity. You can see a TTArtisan 17mm, F1.4 in this video. It produces a great image with the camera and only cost 100 euros."

Deadvine | Spectralis 2 and Virus TI downtempo IDM

video upload by MIDERA

"This was song number 2 in a set of 4 songs. 'Away' was my first song, previously published.

I think this one was my favorite. It seemed to scratch this itch in my brain I didn't know I had. Sometimes, music does that to me, but I always like it when I'm able to create that.

Last night I uploaded a new photo to my Flickr page and realized I hadn't posted anything there since July of 2021, a month before my second daughter was born. I realized that after that my life got so hectic, I stopped doing a lot of things I enjoyed. Now with two dogs that hate each other, and two amazing little girls - I definitely don't have much time to do anything on my own. Would it be nice to have a little more free time? Yes. Would I change my life to get that? No. I love being with my kids (and dogs - but they just can't be together).

What else is there to say for now - which is a good thing I guess.

Away | Spectralis and Virus TI downtempo IDM

video upload by MIDERA

"Song 1 of 4 from a recent show

My studio is a mess. Nothing connected. It was a struggle to reconnect my Spectralis and Virus, which had been sitting in their cases since I went out to do a live show early October. A few days after my show was done our refrigerator died (and we realized we had been eating spoiled food) and then a few days later I had to put my cat Pivot down. It hadn't been the best month.

I've listed all sorts of gear locally to sell - because my studio is just too cluttered. I don't think I can really store my stuff in a way that makes any sense, so it should just go - but no one seems interested (locally). Maybe I'd regret selling the gear - but also, I regret having it all too.

Delta CEP A2 - Little improvisation

video upload by Jörg Schaaf

"A little improvisation with two Delta CEP A2 synthesizers. You will get an impression of the new Performance Step Sequencers. Allows for adding and removing notes at all positions of the sequence during playback & transpose.

In the beginning I set the left Delta into hold mode. That plays a note or chord until a new note or chord is played."

Red Rainfall | Electronic IDM music

video upload by MIDERA

"Check out my Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/0Frpq...

Support me here: https://midera.bandcamp.com/album/the...

I originally made this track using a ‘strings’ pad on my JD-800, but I sat there feeling like “couldn’t I just do this with the Virus – and so I did. I don’t know whether they were similar enough because this is now the final copy. I like the JD-800, but it’s so big and feels unnecessary in my studio. Swapping out the gear like this makes me think that it’s even more true.

The drums were made by filtering all samples into the analog 24db LP filter and then into the fixed filterbank. Maybe I can make a video where I show how that changes the sound of the samples… It’s a pretty basic track and video though, so there really isn’t much to what I made here.
