Mid-2000s Signal Arts MAPS Sequencer

"The rare, more playable predecessor to the TetraMAPS, the MAPS has 16 banks of 8 sequences, able to run multiple concurrent sequences, chaining sequences to other sequences, modulating sequences by each other, and sending the sequencer output to any of three cv+gate pairs as well as up to 32 channels of MIDI.

Sequences can run at different speeds from each other, sync'd to external trigger, external clock, each with different step lengths.

While you could use it for some drum applications, where this really shines is leads and melody (or bass and acid, for that matter). Unlike most sequencers, you can trigger the same sequence to play from different start points simultaneously, leading to polyrythms that are more difficult to achieve with most other gear. You can also start and stop those layered sequences very smoothly live."

Synthi Sax Trio

Published on Jan 27, 2019 d4nnyp

"Made this patch while exploring my modified Synthi. The patch sounds like a trio with bass, drums (cool 8 bit sound) and a sax! Its a pretty simple patch but made me laugh so I recorded it. I think all it needs is Vic and Bob doing some pub singing over it. Top of the pops our kid!

I put a stereo widener on it (BX Stereomaker) just to make it sound a bit nicer but that's the only processing done. No other effects or dubbing etc. Live output into Mac for BX then back out into the camera.

Sequencing from Signal Arts TETRA MAPS. 1 gate and 2 CV channels used.

The Synthi was modified by Portabellabz. Mods are on Push Pull Pots, its a great way of keeping the synthi looking standard while still having all the lovely mods."

Update:

Synthi Briefcase Band

Published on Jan 27, 2019 d4nnyp

"This is the patch from the last video with a couple of tweaks.

Itsa modified EMS Synthi with 1 gate and 2 CV channels of sequencing from a Signal Arts Tetra MAPS.

Recorded as a live take, only post processing was normalisation and stereo widening."

Random Seed

Published on Jan 25, 2013 d4nnyp·13 videos

"BugBrand Modular synth doing all sounds, Gotharman Little deFormer playing and processing the speech sample. Signal Arts Tetra MAPS sequencer triggering BugBrand.

Complicated patch so I won't explain it all but interesting bit is using cross modulation for the clock. Everything, including the MAPS is clocked from an oscillator in LFO range, the rate of the oscillator is changed by sample and hold that is clocked from the same oscillator, so theres a feedback path.
MAPS, has 2 main sequencer channels into the Bugbrand and each of those is modulated by 2 further sequence tracks, the latter 2 set to random mode. MAPS is very good at sequence modulation and live triggering.
Gotharman Little deFormer is triggered from the BugBrand and CV'd from both BugBrand and MAPS via the AnaX analog breakout box."

"The Tetra "Midi Analog Performance Sequencer" (Tetra MAPS) is an extremely versatile and intuitive sequencer. This thing is truly bad-ass & capable of many cool tricks and features. This is the desktop version, which Signal Arts does not produces any longer.

Specs/info about the unit:
The Tetra MAPS gives you infinite virtual tracks, modulations and multiple, real-time versions of each sequence, polyphonic sequencing, as well as four channels of CV output and computer network Open Sound Control. It has an Ethernet port for device networking Ethernet communications using Open Sound Control (OSC). You can control the Tetra MAPS and send real-time data to OSC enabled applications such as iPad TouchOSC, MAX/MSP, Lemur and more. You can also network together multiple Tetra MAPS sequencers using OSC messages.

It has analog voice control with Full-featured four channel MIDI to Control Voltage conversion (MCV) with authentic mono synth emulation with an eight finger note buffer. It also has Low/High/Last note priority as well as Volts/Octave or Volts/Hertz output scaling.

Dynamic sequence triggering with this unit moves beyond the traditional step sequencer. This Tetra MAPS sequencer can have concurrent triggering of each bank of eight sequences, with multiple virtual sequence iterations. Multiple sequences can trigger sources i.e. encoder knobs, external MIDI, & Open Sound Control (OSC signals). It has multiple modes of triggering and can make sequence steps that can overlap each other, which enables the Tetra MAPS sequencer to create polyphonic layers w/ one sequence.

Real time flexibility moves beyond a MIDI sequencer with Real time sequence track control: volume/mute, remote modulation, track patch change, meta linking, meta triggering, record. Sequence step modes: note/scale, detune, velocity, controller, step duration, note duration, slew rate.

Other features: +24,000 note memory. +Analog and MIDI sync."

"Tetra MAPS modular sequencer by Signal Arts in the eurorack / euro format. It is one of the most versatile sequencer available. It interfaces with OSC (Open Sound Control), MIDI and CV. It even has an iPad app you can use to control it. All of the details can be found at http://www.signalarts.ca/satproducts.html. I'll let their description speak for itself:

"Quick Video (demo) of the beta SEQ1 Sequencer Hub 8step sequencer from BugBrand.

SEQ1 acting as sequencer Hub (that's what its called after all) Also using 2x CTL which are stepped from the Gate A/B slots then mixed. Bits of Sequencer cross modulation also going on between these, one of the CTL1's also sends CV to the EXT CV in that varies the range of the CV out."

Polyrhythmic Buchla from Scratch

YouTube via dkimcg | August 16, 2010

"4 on 5 poly-rhythmic patch from scratch.
Only things I planned ahead of time were the 4 and 5 step sequences in the TetraMaps.

Too much reverb yet again, and a couple glitches from when I touched my touchplate by accident off screen. Doh."
