Do you need a complex poly synth - or just polyphony and FX?

"There are few synths more simple than the Solina, but can it be extended from its one trick? Can it do what real poly synths do, or at least cover some of the territory by using external effects? And if it successfully delivers a range of bid pad sounds then can interesting little mono synths do the weird stuff and your need for a flagship poly finally end?
After a short intro burble I demo a range of sounds using the Strymon Mobius, Shift Line Astronaut and Erica Synths Acidbox III. They certainly move the Solina out of its usual zone but can't really overcome the lack of envelope control. OTOH the pad thing is well covered. It it enough to end Big Poly GAS?

"The repair included a re-wiring of the transformer, a recapped power supply, a ton of transistors have been switched out along with the master tone generator - the wooden sides have been repaired and the whole wooden structure has been re-enforced and has a fresh varnish.

Includes original glass music stand and schematics.

This one has seen some action but overall impact is really not bad: some wear and oxidation on the front panel and minor dings on the corners of the wood.

A small piece of the plastic music stand strip is missing and two burn marks on the keys are visible on close inspection.

The glass music stand has a few scratches - mostly smaller ones visible only when held up against a light."

"This keyboard synthesizer was rescued from a Great Lien storage unit that was once owned by Etta James trombonist. It has been in storage for many years inside the case. When opening the case, the protective foam was very fragile. I removed the foam from the case and wiped off as much as I could off of the keyboard. The keyboard feels very solid nothing loose, overall looks to be in Good Condition. I plugged it in and everything looked to be working just fine. All keys bounce off the finger nicely, all buttons/switches make different sounds. Only 1 key was not working (refer to photo with my finger)"

Ultimate Vintage String Synth Comparison

"The Ultimate String Synth Comparison.
I’ve got my hands on some of the best stringers ever and decided to give you a little side by side comparison. I played three different excerpts with seven different string synths - ”Basic strings”, ”Full strings” and ”Dark strings”. You can easily compare the sound character of each synth.
The first two excerpts are pretty straightfoward, but the ”dark strings” involved a little bit more sound design to see if the synths can be pushed to produce more mellow kind of pad sounds straight out of the instrument.

The samples are not complete dry but they all have the same amount of delay and reverb.
The instruments are (in the order of the audio track) as follows:
-Korg Delta
-Korg Trident (mk1)
-Korg Lambda
-Roland RS-505 Paraphonic
-Arp Solina SE-II by Eminent
-Roland RS-09 Organ/Strings
-Waldorf Streichfett

Unfortunately I couldn’t include the Yamaha SK-20 here because I sold it before recording these. It has quite a unique sound character among these vintage stringers. Of course there are other string synths too, but I never owned them.

The Streichfett is the only modern and digital instrument here and it shows, in a bad way - it sounds flat, lifeless and characterless in comparison. The notes don’t blend well within a chord and the root notes dominate the balance in a nasty way. I’d pick any analog stringer over it in a heartbeat.

My personal ranking list for these instruments would be as follows:
1. Korg Trident
2. Roland RS-505
3. Korg Lambda
4. Korg Delta, Roland RS-09, Arp Solina
x- Waldorf Streichfett

My opinion is based on knowing the instruments and not only based on these sound clips."

Actually my buddy Seth suggested this. So yep I kinda lied in the title there. These synths: one of them is a lightweight new kid straight out of a box with more sassy highs, the other is a disc crushing bohemoth piece of furniture with mellow disposition. The brand new Behringer Solina in the left channel, the crusty vintage ARP/Eminent in the right channel. I replaced the ARP mains capacitors, but left all the tropical fish alone. Some of those freshwater angels are janky and cracked but still representin'. Whaddaya think? I know best synth performance ever! Talk amongst yourselves.

Recorded direct. No other mastering or effects have been added."

"The Solina String Synthesizer is the rare brother of the String Ensemble. Only about 100 were made, so they are very hard to find. The String Synthesizer is basically a combination of the String Ensemble and the Arp Explorer 1. You can select between Preset sounds (trumpets, flutes, and clarinets) or make your own using the added VCO, courtesy of the Explorer. It offered way more sound editing than the String Ensemble, and was capable of more diverse sounds. The unit is technically flawless, it was serviced about 2 years ago. There is also little to complain about visually."

I'm back with a follow up Bank for the fantastic Sequential Take 5. Essence Vol 2 contains 128 all new Patches, with emphasis on playable Sounds, not weird Sound FX.

V2 Firmware added some great new features such as OSC 2 to be bypassed from the Filter, Vintage as a destination and many others, which I have fully taken advantage of. Many of the Patches utilise the excellent FM Function for unusual tones.

Down in the Park [Numan cover] on Solina and Perkons

"Gary Numan's 1979 single 'Down in the Park' has always been a favorite of mine. This cover version (instrumental) has been made using only the Behringer Solina Strings and the Erica Synths Perkons drum machine. The Solina plays all the synth parts while the Perkons does drums and the sub-bass deep hits best revealed on headphones. The images are AI generated using Stable Diffusion.
It wasn't my aim to make a 1:1 copy but in the end I stayed pretty close to the original. Any time I started changing things it felt like I was insulting an old friend.

"The Behringer Solina Strings is controlled by the DB-01. At first blush it seems a bit silly but there are some interesting reasons you might want to try it. And one thing I forgot to mention in the video: The DB-01 is of course in 'scale' mode, in this case E-Minor.
