Sónar+D 2018: Soundcool on its accessible tool for musical collaboration

Published on Jun 16, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Cool sounds from Sónar+D 2018.

You might think that creating music and visuals collaboratively in real time would be the domain of experienced coders and algoravers, but as we found at Sónar+D – the sister event to Sónar's long-running Barcelona music festival – it doesn't have to be that way.

There, Spanish startup Soundcool gave us the lowdown on how its system of modules – controllable via phones, tablets and even Microsoft's Kinect and forthcoming Hololens – could make musical collaboration an accessible reality for the masses."

Sónar+D 2018: Playtronica shows us its quirky MIDI controllers

Published on Jun 15, 2018 FACTmagazine

"Synthesizers don't have to be played with black and white keys: in recent years we've seen the rise of grid controllers, tablets and squishy, multi-touch surfaces for music-making. Quirky startup Playtronica is trying to make MIDI interfaces even more fun, bringing fruit and color recognition into the mix.

We visited Playtronica's stand at this weekend's Sónar+D in Barcelona – the sister event to Sónar's long-running music festival – to find out more about how its fun MIDI controllers can enable anyone to make a whole orchestra out of pineapples, use a color palette as a rhythmic sequencer and use the human body as an instrument."

"A new all-in-one music studio for iOS.

Sónar’s 24th Barcelona festival took place last weekend, and on top of a stellar line-up of artists that included Princess Nokia, Anderson .Paak, The Black Madonna and many more, there was lots of exciting music gear on show in its Sónar+D area.

Novation's app team Ampify was there to show off its new music-making app, Groovebox, which was released earlier this month on iOS. It includes two synths and a drum machine - all you need to start making music from scratch on your iPhone."

Novation Metropolis at Sonar

Novation // Sonar 2016 - Novation Metropolis

Published on Jun 17, 2016 NovationTV

"We are here at Sónar+d in sunny Barcelona. Come on down and strap on some headphones and instantly start making music - with old friends, new friends and total strangers.

Welcome to Novation Metropolis.

Populated by keys, knobs and dials, oscillators, filters and sequencers; Novation Metropolis is a destination for the deeply technical and the dabbler alike.

Come and use our easy and intuitive interfaces to get the ball rolling, or build from the ground up with the inventive Novation technology hiding beneath the surface. The resident team of Novation nerds can guide you through an interactive playground of interconnected synths, samplers, sequencers, drum machines and everything in between – or just point you in the right direction.

With an emphasis on easy collaborative musical workflows, expect to lose hours in the deep recesses of the Metropolis and when you’re done, you can take your musical souvenirs home for further sculpting, perfecting and tweaking.

Keep it simple and fun or dive down the rabbit hole; come and nerd out with our beautiful minds and let us show you the latest in our interactive musical technologies.

All are welcome in the Metropolis.

XOXX Composer Sonar 2015

XOXX Composer Sonar 2015 from Axel Bluhme on Vimeo.

Be sure to see this post as well.

The XOXX Composer is a sequencer sampler that uses magnets to trigger sounds. Drumming has gone through many abstractions - percussions - drum machine - software. The XOXX Composer simplifies the complexity of making rhythmical patterns and breaks down the core functions into semantically understandable components.

The goal is basically that anyone, even someone without musical knowledge, should be able to quickly create unique and interesting rhythms in a playful and tactile approach.
