Oberheim OB-1 Demo/For Sale (by synthpro)

video upload by synthpro

"Hey Guys, In this video, I go over a very cool little Oberheim OB-1 I have been working on between all my other projects. As you can see in this video, its a great playing little synth once more after being dead for many years.

This particular synth belongs to David Ewing who played with Brenda Lee for 30+ years so this synth also has some awesome history behind it.

Here is a link to Tauntek's page on the OB-1 for those interested or struggling with your own repairs: http://www.tauntek.com/OB1.htm

Seuential Circuits TOM with Tauntek TOM16 extansion

video upload by ohm_studi_ohm

"The Sequential TOM was already a great drum machine at the time it was released, with a lot of nice features, especially regarding MIDI implementation. You could play, record, synchronise the machine over MIDI and adjust sample direction, volume, pitch and pan of every sample either on the device or over MIDI, in real time and for every step ! That gives you lots of possible variations. Not many drum machines could could achive that at the time.

And now thanx to another amazing engineering by Tauntek you can have 16 kits in the instrument at all time, without the need to switch cartridges. And even more important: you can swap the internal kit samples as well as the cartridge ones, enabling for any combination of 2 kits you wish. This is impossible with cartridges or other upgrade available, and only possible thanx to Tauntek firmware. And that makes a huge difference. Note that you can only have 15 sounds at hand not 16. The 8th pad from the cartridge layer is always a trigger out message and won't trigger a sound, even if the loade kit has 8 sounds.

You can even make your own kits if you have access to an Eprom programmer.
Check Tauntek dedicated page for more info (http://www.tauntek.com/TOM16cart.htm)
This unit also had its RAM maxed out, expanding the internal 8k to 32k and thus bringing the stock 2,300 notes capacity to a whopping 10,400. And believe me you run very quickly out of memory if you make some complex patterns with different variations.

So here is the demo, i didn't make patterns demos for each of the 16 kits but you'll get the idea, and I didn't go too deep into external MIDI playing/programming but bare in mind you can record instrument tuning pitch, volume, pan and sample direction (reverse) for every instrument on every step.

Here is the timeline:
00:00 stock kit patterns
02:28 TR808 kit patterns
03:56 TR909 kit patterns
05:08 TR606 kit patterns
06:25 CR78 kit patterns
07:17 sound preview of all the kits included in the box
11:18 quick realtime patterns programming using external pads

list of the kits included in the TOM16:

How to POLYCHAIN The Oberheim Matrix 1000 + Install the MASSIVE Tauntek 1.2 firmware upgrade!!!

video upload by Vintage Synthesizer Solutions

Note the Matrix-1000 has 1000 presets, but only the first 200 are user programmable.

"The Oberheim Matrix 1000 has been around since 1988, but did you know that it can be polychained with up to 5 other units?!? This is not a simple MIDI In/Thru setup... One unit must set as the master and then distributes the incoming note data evenly between itself and each of the slaves. Matrix 6 and 6Rs can join the party too, but only as slave units.

We also demonstrate how to upgrade these units with the @Tauntek 1.20 OS upgrade. Add in a @Kiwitechnics patch editor and you've got a monster vintage analog synthesizer. Enjoy our quick demonstration of 3 x Matrix 1000s: 18 voices & 36 DCOs of creamy Oberheim goodness..."

"Recently serviced, calibrated, and upgraded by Analog Synth Service (early 2020) in Oakland, CA

So this OB1 has better-than-original functionality, as it has the upgraded Tauntek Programmer board, which adds the following features to an already powerful synth:
1) 64 programs (8 banks w/ 8 programs each)
2) Programs are stored in non-volatile EEPROM. No battery needed. YAY!
3) After a program is loaded, only controls that have moved are "live", so patch editing is now possible
4) Manual mode forces all controls to be "live"
5) Comes with 24 pre-programmed patches, which can be over-written later if you chose
6) 20-turn trimpot for easier one-time oscillator tuning adjustment"

1985 Crumar Bit One Vintage Synth w/ Tauntek Mod

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"This synth has recently been serviced and had the Tauntek Mod installed so you can control midi cc remotely.

I've noticed that the very high notes sound a little softer than the rest of the keyboard. This may have something to do with velocity sensitivity. It's only happening near the top octave of the keyboard.

This Crumar Bit One is a quirky and dope sounding poly synth. Com Truise calls the Crumar Bit One his "secret weapon."

Expanding the Sequential TOM to hold 16 "cartridges"

I bought my TOM a few years ago, and had always intended to make some sort of switch-able cartridge for it. I decided recently that it would be nicer to have everything inside the TOM, if possible, and control it using the TOM user interface. There are two advantages to doing it this way:

1) Cartridges can be selected without unplugging and replacing EPROMs, which can get damaged by ESD or bent pins.

2) Both the internal sounds and the cartridge can be swapped out, so all 15 sounds can be changed, not just the top 7. There are two "slots" - internal and cartridge. Any of the 16 "cartridges" can be placed in either slot. If a cartridge has seven sounds in it, and is placed in the internal slot, button 8 will not make a sound. All of the cartridges I have made have 8 sounds. If they are placed in the internal slot, all 8 are available. If they are placed in the cartridge slot, only the first 7 sounds are available.

The board plugs into one of the internal sound ROM IC sockets, after both chips have been removed. It also needs A15b and A16b which are not available in either socket, so two short wires are used. I use A15b and A16b instead of A15 and A16 to avoid connecting to the Wonder chip signals. Luckily there are eyelets on the TOM board right where I needed them to be for these two signals.

Here is a photo showing the newer version of the pcb, which has a third wire. The original two wires are connected exactly as before, while the third wire attaches to the lower end of the 10K resistor near the battery. I have added a small circuit which should allow inserting a cartridge (for testing) into the TOM while the TOM16 is installed. In this case, the only sounds available would be the ones on the cartridge, as the TOM16 EPROM is disabled.

How does it work? I added code to the TOM V1.6 OS firmware (the final SCI version) to allow selecting cartridges using the std user interface. Once the selection is made, these values are sent using the Wonder chip in a special way to a PIC micro-controller on my board. That chip presents the two cartridge select 4-bit codes to a dual 4:1 mux that feeds the correct one to an 8 Mbit EPROM. I do not plan to release the PIC code, or provide the source for my version of the TOM OS at this time. The only changes that I made to the TOM OS firmware were for TOM16 support. No other changes were made.

I am currently offering fully assembled pcb's for $105 including Priority Mail shipping to USA addresses. If you are outside of the USA, please contact me for the additional shipping cost. In order to install the board in your TOM, you will need to upgrade the (socketed) firmware EPROM with one that I supply. You will also need to remove the two (socketed) sound ROM chips I610 and I611. And finally you will need to carefully solder three wires, (which I will supply) into small holes in the TOM pc board and in my board."

MIDI Designer layout for Crumar Bit 01 w/ Tauntek Mod

via MIDI Designer

"With the great firmware update by Bob Grieb (tauntek.com) it's finally possible to control all parameters of a Crumar Bit 01 via MIDI. This MIDI Designer layout for the iPad has been tested with a Crumar Bit 01, but should in theory also work with a Bit 99 and to some degree also with a Bit One. Since I only have a Bit 01 here, I couldn't test it myself, but comparing the CC maps of the three synths they look basically compatible (Bit 99 does not have Detune / Noise though, but CC's are otherwise identical).

Note: To use this layout please ensure your device is in Lower, Edit (Address) mode. CC's are only accepted in this mode. Please also note that you will exit this mode when changing a program (e.g. via the Up/Down steppers in this layout). So, after changing a program you'll need to manually enter the Lower, Edit (Address) mode again."

You can find the template here.
