New Life | Westlicht Performer alt firmware, Rings, Streams, WMD TrshMstr

video upload by Cinematic Laboratory

"It's spring! It's probably my favorite season of the year. This video showcases a few new ideas with Rings & Streams, add some rock with the WMD TrashMaster while Westlicht runs an 'alternative' firmware.

I got a tip from a subscriber there's a new firmware for WestLicht Performer. I checked it out and noticed is a 'fork' by Mebitek. A fork is a sidestep from the original code, where developers can try things out, and merge good stuff back into the main firmware 'branch'. I am not sure if this is ever going to happen because there isn't much going on in Westlicht development. So you'll need to see it as an alternative firmware, it may not be supported and it could bring new bugs to your module.

However, this firmware adds stochastic tracks, gate length variation probability, scale overrides and note repeats. I also noticed a few small bug fixes. Transposing from another channel now works as expected.

You can find the firmware here if you're interested: https://github.com/mebitek/performer/...

You only need to download UPDATE.DAT, put it on an SD and press the encoder while booting the module. Then follow the instructions. You can always go back to the factory release, so make sure you have a backup somewhere, and make a backup of your original SD including presets.

I think the firmware is great and it brings 'new life' to the module, but it's not very interesting if you don't have a Westlicht.

Streams also needed attention after keeping it stored for six years. It's a unique take on a low pass gate, and it brings new life to anything that's supposed to sound organic. So I gave it a shot with Rings. Since you can push Streams into saturation and clipping, I wanted to run Rings through WMD Trash Master. 'New Life' also qualifies for WMD. This great brand is back in business after the Covid-19 electronic parts nightmare. So yes. Winter is over."

BAF 2024: AMMT - Clutch High Hat Module

video upload by sonicstate

"At NAMM 2024, Sonic State spoke with Alex from AMMT, a new company that is an offshoot of WMD. AMMT showcased their new hi-hat module called Clutch, which is a dual sample player designed to create high-quality hi-hat sounds. The module includes various features such as blend knobs, surface control, release, pitch, balance, and filters. It also offers CV capabilities for added modulation possibilities.

The Clutch hi-hat module is expected to be released in the next couple of months with a price around $399."

Eurorack Phasers

volume 3 video upload by John Schussler

"I got a Pittsburgh Modular Toad not long ago, and realized I'd not compared the WMD Orion to anything either. Figured I'd put them both together, and throw in the G-Storm Polychrome to help join this video with earlier comparisons of eurorack phasers.

The Orion is now discontinued, and the Toad is a limited edition that will sell out. Only the Polychrome is in continued production. Not that there aren't other phasers, mind you, just saying if you like these....

VCO is a Befaco Pony. Little bit of reverb to make it not so harsh, but not too much. That's about it. Enjoy.

Eurorack Phasers - Take 2

video upload by John Schussler

"(This is a 'headphones required' video. You won't hear half of what's going on if you don't listen in headphones.)

This is my second attempt at a video on eurorack Phasers. The first (linked here but not otherwise listed in my channel: Eurorack Phasers) contained a number of mistakes. I'm keeping it around because I actually find those mistakes interesting, and want to be able to remind myself.

In particular, I didn't understand a couple things:

1) The SynthTech E560 input isn't set up for Eurorack levels, it's set up for line levels. If you don't attenuate the input, it distorts rather badly.
2) You have to use BOTH outputs of any module (that has them) if you want to hear stereo phasing. It's the contrast between the source audio and the phased audio that makes the effect, and you need two outputs to make that happen.

So. Once again into the breach, I attempt to compare some eurorack phasers. I think somewhat more successfully this time.

Perkons driven by the Midicake arpeggiator (no talk)

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Two examples of the Midicake Arp driving the Perkons drum machine. There's no patterns or steps programmed here, just MIDI triggers sent from the Arp. Each voice is on a different MIDI channel. Variations are created by a gentle modulation of the beats/bar parameter and the two modulations channels variously affecting velocity, groove length and the rhythm pattern length. Timings on individual parts have also been tweaked using the delay parameter. When you see the orange light on a channel it means that part is muted.
The Arp is of course blind to what might make a pleasing drum pattern so it's a little bit chaotic at times but overall I think it's an interesting end result. If the drums weren't the main focus of your performance, but you needed something that continually changed to the avoid simple continuous loops then this might be a good solution. By switching kits you can also create some interesting fills. And while it might all be a bit loose as a jam, it could easily be chopped up into something much more coherant. And a drum machine that was able to receive note information (like the LXR-02) would be even more interesting.
The Geiger Counter provides some grit and there's also a little Fabfilter Pro-R on the kick (which was taken as a separate out).
Anyway, just a little noodle for your consideration and amusement.

Perkons through four flavors of filth

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Two Perkons patterns playing three kits tested through four pedals: the WMD Geiger Counter, Fairfield Circuitry Roger That, Darkglass B3K and JPTRFX Add Violence*. I contemplated cutting this down to a four minute highlight video but I think there's real value in showing the actual process of tweaking to get the best sounds. But maybe I'm wrong. What do you think? Show the best bits only, or show the process?

In any case you can see in both the Geiger Counter and Roger That where tiny adjustments can have profound effect on the output and it's pretty clear they get the biggest range of different and usable sounds. The two "small" pedals really only have a single core effect and can only get relatively modest variations from that. But horses for courses. To balance the varying volume levels I had to be quite heavy-handed on the limiting, so some of the louder sections have been squashed (Fabfilter Pro-L and Cockos ReaLimit). Generally the Geiger Counter had the most consistent volume and was most easily adjusted on the pedal itself, whereas Roger That and Add Violence tended to be most difficult to tame. * NB: I've adjusted the internal trimpots on Add Violence and they have a huge effect on the sound. I've no idea how far I've diverged - for better or worse - from the original values! (I must do a video where I adjust these in real time. It's such a shame they aren't actual knobs).

Perkons meets the Geiger Counter

video upload by Richard DeHove

"Am still in the "getting to know you" phase with the Perkons so am here combining a simple pattern with a couple of kit changes and a lot of track muting.

But the vital part is the WMD Geiger Counter pedal. I was very fortunate to find one of these brand new to buy (in Germany). I paid more than the old list price but everyone raves about how good this pedal sounds. And it is certainly a good fit for the Perkons. It's also helping with my color issues :) I don't touch any of the Geiger Counter's controls so this is not a showcase for the pedal but will get to that soonish. Or very soonish if there's any interest in a deep dive...

Here channel one of the Perkons is on its own output to the DAW and is otherwise completely uneffected.
The other three channels are all going through the Geiger Counter then into the Boss EQ.
No other effects or processing in the DAW this time except of course for the added samples - a two and half minute drum solo would have been too much even for me. You'll also see a few video edits where I've chopped this down from the 11-minute original.
Finally, the pattern actually starts on beat 13, which reminds me of the bad old days with the DB-01 before it got its "pattern rotate" feature and you could change the start point. Well, live and learn guv'nor.

Superbooth 2023: WMD/AMMT - VCA Mark III - HiHat

video upload by sonicstate

"At Superbooth 2023, Sonicstate spoke to Alex from AMMT/WMD about the big changes occurring in the company. WMD is continuing to produce its mixer and voice architecture modules, such as Carbon Filter and Javelin, as well as the new digital VCA Mark III module. The updated VCA features zero crossing detection which eradicates pops and is available at the end of the year. AMMT is presenting the HiHat, a sample player and interface designed to make hi-hats and percussive textures. It is still a prototype with no name yet, but it features an open and closed input, two layers of samples, and various controls to mix the samples and create the desired hi-hat.

WMD was previously manufacturing for other companies as well as their own, and with this change, both companies are sharing the workload and reducing their product lines to be smaller and more focused. AMMT and WMD are working on new products which should be available by the end of the year."

WMD Resumes Operations & Branches off New Company AMMT Synthesis

via an intervew with WMD's William Mathewson over on Perfect Circuit

"We've got several layers of good news: 1) WMD is resuming operation; 2) There are plenty of new and old products in the works; and 3) Many WMD designs have branched off for production under a new company called AMMT Synthesis, headed by Mathewson and several of his colleagues from WMD (Alex Anderson, Matt Tanner, and Mason Malvinni). I'll start by saying that we don't expect to see new products in the wild from WMD or AMMT until sometime later this summer at the earliest; but we're beyond thrilled to hear that some of our favorites (Performance Mixer, Metron, and more) are going to be available once again, in a slightly updated form."

You can find the full interview over at Perfect Circuit here.

WMD Legion vs Intellijel Dixie II+

video upload by John Schussler

"As is so often the case with these videos, I'm trying to make a 'keep or sell' decision. In this case between the WMD Legion, which has just arrived, or the Intellijel Dixie II+, both of which are 8hp VCOs.

They have different feature sets, and that's not really what interests me here. In this video I'm just doing a comparison of the basic sounds, getting a feel for whether there's a big difference in sound quality that would indicate keeping one or the other makes sense, or if they're so similar it's just a feature competition.

Eurorack Waveshaping VCOs

video upload by John Schussler

"Several interesting new VCOs have been released over the past 6 months or so, and just recently the one I was waiting on, Legion from WMD, arrived.

So now seems like a good time to look at this batch of VCOs that all have a similar add-on feature: waveshaping. They don't all do it the same way, and all have very different sounds, but in my head they're sortof a category from which I probably only need one or two.

We'll see.
