Electronic Dream Plant Gnat SN 401463

via this auction

"The EDP Gnat is the slimmed-down version of the EDP Wasp, yet it has its own buzzy attitude that holds its own. The built-in speaker provides a nasty bite, much harsher than its stinging counterpart, and the filter radiates menace at its higher settings, swarming around your head. You can also patch straight out into your favorite effects or direct into your mixer or sound card for a less confrontational volley with your favorite winged insect synth's sticker coated touchplate.

The Gnat has a digital oscillator that is fed through an analog filter, a trick the designer, Chris Huggett (RIP) used to great effect on later classic synths he designed like the OSCar and Bass Station. The oscillator has several selectable waveforms including Ramp, Square, Noise, and the one we always left it on, Enhance, which moves the waveform around in a manner similar to pulse width modulation and makes the single oscillator sound like two beating against each other.

Next to the waveform selection is an octave switch where you can choose footage of 32, 16, 8, 4, and 2.

The front panel also includes an LFO featuring sine, ramp, saw, square, and random waveforms as well as speed control and an offset amount for setting modulation of the oscillator.

The remaining controls are a filter with resonance, seriously, the resonance is wild, and a pot to set the balance of what is affecting the filter's cutoff, VCO, or envelope. Speaking of the envelope there is a dedicated section of the panel for it with attack, decay/release, and a contour knob. Finishing out the panel is a glide amount knob.

The side of the Gnat has a 1/4" output jack, a connector for the EDP Spider sequencer to attach to, and a 9V power inlet.

This Gnat is fully functional, with all "keys" sounding. It can be run with a 9V power adapter, or alternately with 6 "C" batteries, so you can take the Gnat back into the wilderness with you.

The synth is basically in excellent shape but we marked down the condition due to the faint remnants of someone copying note letters to the first four keys, which we have pictured.

A very rare synth, speculation is that there were only 600 or less made. EDP used a serial numbering system that started with the model number, in this case 40, then starting the count from 1000, which leaves this Gnat as the 463rd unit. We were unable to find another for sale anywhere online."

via this auction

"1978 Electronic Dream Plant (EDP) Spider Sequencer
Works with original EDP Wasp and Gnat Synths
Includes the Din cable to connect to Wasp or Gnat.

In good shape, no cracks in the plastic. I used this in my synth studio for a few years. Very fun. Can clock it with audio signal. I use to sent a trig out of a Roland Tr-606 with wonderful results. Trimmers on the side to adjust sensitivity.

Very rare item.

EDP Wasp and Spider and Road Case

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.

via this auction

"Electronic Dream Plant Wasp and Spider. Also included is a custom Anvil road case that fits the two pieces, and a 7-pin DIN cable to connect the Wasp and the Spider. Both pieces are in very good cosmetic and functional condition. These were obtained from the original owner who packed them away in the 80's and never brought them back out till recently, which accounts for their condition. The battery compartment on the Wasp shows no sign of battery leakage, but the battery terminals have been cut out."

"Since I don't have a Wasp anymore, I was advised that I could test it just by putting in a 9V battery, plugging it into an amp, turning it on and holding down the play button. I did this and it worked! I was amazed at what I heard, so cool.. must have been stored sounds from decades ago? It sounded amazing!"

Funny, I wonder what he heard. The Spider is a sequencer. You can find more info in previous posts here.

Electronic Dream Plant EDP Spider Sequencer

"This particular EDP Spider was recently inspected and serviced, and is in perfect working condition. The Spider sequencer records notes input into it from another EDP synthesizer, and allows quantization, as well as the ability to sync to an external source (like a drum machine), and send cv and gate out. It's fast and easy to use, and the results are mind boggling! Cable to connect to your wasp or gnat is also included... The Spider, when paired with a WASP or bass machine Gnat, is a powerful tool for creating rhythms, basslines, and other melodic sequences quickly. Perfect for live or studion situations."

EDP Caterpillar controller keyboard for Wasp, Gnat, Spider

Note: Auction links are affiliate links for which the site may be compensated.
via this auction

"EDP Caterpillar controller keyboard, for Wasp and Gnat synthesizers and Spider sequencer.

The Electronic Dream Plant Wasp was a popular and affordable British-built synthesizer sold in the '80s. It featured a flat touch-sensitive keyboard which, though it made it inexpensive, also made it difficult to play. EDP's answer was the Caterpillar, a proper three-octave mechanical keyboard which could be connected to the Wasp and play it via a proprietary cable. The Caterpillar is also compatible with EDP's cut-down Gnat synth, and the Spider digital sequencer.

The Caterpillar has four EDP connectors, so it can play up to four Wasps simultaneously; either polyphonically, or randomly, or cyclically. The effect of this is stupendous - I've seen it done once, but who these days has four working Wasps? The Caterpillar also has a Hold function, and a Voice Select mode which was intended for a programmable synth which never made it to market.

The Caterpillar has a charmingly hand-made looking wooden case and is normally powered by an internal 9V battery. This one is a bit of an oddity in that it's been painted black - not in the factory I think, but by a previous owner. Certainly there's a lot of scratching to the paintwork and the original wooden finish is showing through. There's been a mod made so there's a dangling external connector for a 9V power supply - I haven't taken the back off, but I imagine it would still be possible to connect a battery.

One knob cap is missing, and the other has lost its cover, but they're easy enough to replace and the switches still seem fine.

Points to bear in mind;

1) This is purely a controller keyboard, it doesn't make any sounds. Its sockets may look like MIDI, but they're not; it will control only EDP synths, and you will have to provide the appropriate EDP cables.
2) I haven't been able to test it at all, since my Wasp died long ago. Therefore it's being sold with no guarantee of functionality of any kind, and no possibility of return. If you're interested enough to collect EDP gear, I imagine you're willing to accept the possibility that it may need service or maintenance. It certainly needs a good clean.
3) I don't have any cables or manuals - there are only two switches, so you should be able to manage without a manual if you can't find one on the net; I think Kenton Electronics can supply EDP cables.

It's not too heavy to post, but collection from St Albans is welcome."

EDP Wasp synthesizer & EDP Spider sequencer

via this auction

"WASP
Plus Points
When the 9 volt DC mains adaptor is connected and an audio lead is connected to the Line Out and the Wasp is turned on, it emits a continuous note. This frequency/sound of the note can be affected by certain controls such as:
KEYBOARD section 'Bend' and 'Glide' affect the frequency/sound of the note including adjusting white tuning screw
OSCILLATOR 1 section all 'F.T.' settings, 'Width%' and Wave Form control affect the frequency/sound of the note
OSCILLATOR 2 section all 'F.T.' settings, 'Pitch' and Wave Form control affect the frequency/sound of the note
CONTROL OSC. section 'Freq', 'Pitch Mod', 'Noise Signal' and wave form control affect the frequency/sound of the note
FILTER section 'Freq', 'Q', Band Control and both 'Control' knobs affect the frequency/sound of the note
OUTPUT 'Volume' and 'Power On' does work

Minus Ponts
However, the 'ENVELOPE GENERATORS' Sections do not affect the frequency/sound of the note. If I touch any note on the keyboard it does not respond. I have tried adjusting the white keyboard touch sensitivity screw (just above keyboard) and this has no effect. Does not make any sound from internal speaker, just a hum.

Please Note: The second photo shows 4 controls have been replaced.
Typically 4 of the yellow tops went missing and I replaced these with new knob/tops from Clocktronics. The original 4 Wasp knobs with no yellow tops are part of the sale .

SPIDER
Plus Points
In the past this used to work when connected to the Wasp and using a Boss DR55 I could stop/start a sequence by connecting to the 'Sync In'.
Minus Points
Now - Even after connecting the LinkCable I do not know if the Spider works because of the problem with the Wasp - see above."

EDP Spider demo with Wasp Deluxe

YouTube Uploaded by clackbeetle on Jun 16, 2011

"Deluxe for sale here

Just got this spider working, it was mostly in bad mechanical rather than electronic. Quite a quirky sequencer , good for making experimental sequences. You can record in real-time or in steps, I run it through both modes plus the special random mode that is mentioned in the manual. Visit my ebay shop to find Link cables for sale."
