Prophet VS Synth: Sound Selection Showcase

video upload by Andy Whitmore

"Analog Synthesizers Rewind: Top 10 Classics!
S1:Ep1 - The first in a series of 11 videos!

Sequential Circuits Prophet VS – All the Best Sounds

Here's a very cool keyboard from Sequential. Notice the joystick for controlling your sound modeling. The Prophet VS uses Vector Synthesis as its revolutionary new means of sound creation. It uses a total of four oscillators per voice with 127 waveforms (32 user) and dynamic waveform crossfading via the joystick. This was Sequential's first digital synth, and it was also their final synth unfortunately. But after Sequential was gone, Vector Synthesis technology went into the popular Korg Wavestation and Yamaha's SY-22 and TG-33.

The Prophet VS is still a very sought after instrument because it has an incredible range of sounds! Its only problem is that there's practically nobody left that can fix it if something went wrong. It is used by Brian Eno, Trent Reznor, Apollo 440, Depeche Mode, Vince Clarke, Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Erasure and filmmaker/composer John Carpenter."

Fragmented (DiN83) by Parallel Worlds Listening Party February 9th @ 8:00 PM GMT

You might recall Parallel Worlds latest release Fragmented (DiN83) posted here. For those interested, a listening party for his latest release will be held on February 9th on Bandcamp.

Details follow:

February 9th @ 8:00 PM GMT - chat starts @ 7:30PM

A gentle reminder of this listening party on Friday. Join Greek synthesist Bakis Sirros and DiN label boss Ian Boddy to listen and chat about the new Parallel Worlds album "Fragmented" (DiN83).

This fourth solo sonic journey from Sirros on the DiN imprint sees him focusing in on his modular synthesiser systems. It has certainly be noted before, but is worth reiterating, that there is a certain John Carpenter like soundtrack quality to the music of Parallel Worlds. Seemingly simplistic they shroud a wealth of detail and beauty that is revealed over repeated listening.

Looking forward to seeing some of you there.

Fragmented by Parallel Worlds (DiN83) Demo Mix

A new release by Parallel Worlds is coming February 16th. Details follow.

Parallel Worlds Fragmented DiN83 Release date 16th February 2024 Limited to 200 copies Digipak CD Bar Code CD 5028423240839

Greek synthesist Bakis Sirros who records under the name of Parallel Worlds has become a familiar name to followers of the DiN label. His debut release was “Obsessive Surrealism” (DiN26) back in 2007 and since then he has released two further solo albums, “Shade” (DiN32) and “Plector” (DiN76), as well as several collaborative albums with different artists including DiN label boss Ian Boddy & Node guru Dave Bessell.

This fourth sonic journey from Sirros on the DiN imprint sees him focusing in on his modular synthesiser systems, especially the Eurorack format with some able support from Buchla. These massive constructed patches live and breath like a crepuscular organism waking from its slumber. Indeed “Fragmented” is bookended by two wonderfully deep, textural tracks appropriately titled “Dawning” and “Sunset”. With the exception of the organ-like drone soundscape of “Time Flow” the remaining seven tracks encapsulate everything we have come to expect from this unique artist, namely dark, menacing bass lines overlaid with glitchy percussive patterns and beguiling, floating melody lines. It has certainly be noted before, but is worth reiterating, that there is a certain John Carpenter like soundtrack quality to the music of Sirros. Seemingly simplistic they shroud a wealth of detail and beauty that is revealed over repeated listening.

Lovers of Electronica, Dark Techno, Downtempo & IDM will find much to admire in “Fragmented” and this new album once again showcases the unique talent of this highly individual musician.

HWJ Extra - ’Noisevember' 28 2023 ImpOSCar 2 jam

video upload by SynthAddict

"'one synth/all parts' jam with noisy 'drums'
Hirajoshi scale (pentatonic minor)

GForce ImpOSCar2 app and custom hardware controller, TheoryBoard, RC-505 looper

I made a live layered collage of sounds from the amazing ImpOSCar 2 - as it was live, timing got a little wonky. :-) has a little John Carpenter vibe…

I recently bought the last 'new old stock' Touch Digital Controller for ImpOSCar 2 on the planet. :-) It's glorious."

Stand by Me: The Sounds Made for the Film

video upload by

"In this video, Anthony tells the story surrounding the musical score from (1986) hit film Stand by Me which features an All-Star cast that incudes River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, Kiefer Sutherland, Casey Siemaszko, John Cusack and Richard Dreyfuss.

We learn that the first version of the film was titled The Body, named after the novel by Stephen King. The film's director, Rob Reiner intuitively changed the film's name to Stand by Me after licensing the rights to the song with the same name written by Ben E. King along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The name change was made only one week before the film's delivery date. With little time to spare, the musical score was re-created using the sounds and melody from the song and performed on the Synclavier Digital Music System using it's on board sequencer/recorder and employing a sound modeling technique unique to the Synclavier called "Resynthesis".

Anthony describes "Resynthesis"as creating synthesizer sounds based on samples analyzed by the computer that use cross fades of back-to-back wave tables. "Resynthesis" gives you the tonal character of the original sampled sound with all the benefits of a synth (e.g less memory, same length across the keyboard, more editing capabilities...) Along with Brian Banks, Anthony programmed all the sounds and replayed the entire score in this way after the original score by Oscar Winning composer Jack M. Nietzsche was abandoned. The film's director Rob Reiner was present throughout the scoring process. The duo had just completed work programming and performing Jack's score for the John Carpenter Oscar Nominated film Starman.

In this video you'll hear the actual sounds used in the film that Anthony loads from the original 5.25" floppy disks (that still work perfectly after being in storage for close to 40 years). The final score used a core instrumentation of resynthesized versions of a flute, stand up bass, bowed wine glasses and piano. There was no DAW in existence so all the tracks were input into the Synclavier's internal sequencer/recorder and locked to picture using the latest feature SMPTE time code. With this set up, everyone could watch the film while the music was being recorded.

Anthony also states the importance of a good film or a good song. It's all the difference in the potential of your work as a programmer, arranger or performer. He advises to step back and really listen to what you are creating to find the emotion in the sounds.

Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns, Internal Affairs, The Man From Elysian Fields, 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles, been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller.

His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones, Jack Nitzsche, Lamont Dozier, Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. He attended the University of Southern California School of Music as a piano and composition major.

1970's ARP Demo featuring Tom Piggott & Conversations with Tom Piggott & Greg Phillinganes

video upload by Alan R. Pearlman Foundation

"PLEASE NOTE: The beginning of the video is glitchy... both the sound and video will resolve at between 1:30 and 2:07.

Originally aired on WOVB-TV, in association with The Ohio University Telecommunications Center, this is one of several UMATIC demo tapes found in a box when d'ARP (Dina Pearlman-Ifil, Alan Pearlman's daughter) was going through her father's effects.

Tom Piggott was one of several educators that worked at ARP Instruments in the 1970s. He worked closely with Al, helping write the classic: 'Learning Music with Synthesizers' David Friend, Alan R. Pearlman, Thomas D. Piggott)."

Fujifilm XT4 Gritty Low Light Video in Classic Negative with vocoder retro synthpop music

video upload by Mamotreco

"Shot this with the Fujifilm X-T4 and the Fujinon 50mm f2 prime lens. I let the ISO run as high as it wanted to since I was shooting as we were driving around at night on the back roads of the Pacific Northwest suburbs. The IBIS is turned on since the lens has no OIS.
#fujifilm #lowlight #vocoder

The background music I wrote years ago on Fruity Loops 3 with the vocoder vocals coming in from the Microkorg synth. There might also be some Casio CZ5000 melodies in there.

You’ll notice that the footage is pretty jerky at moments but in a rather mechanical way. I believe that is due to the Fujifilm X-T4 IBIS which tends to be pretty rigid, which is great for static shots but not so much for dynamic movement situations.

The Classic Negative film simulation which I applied to the video is very pleasing in terms of mood and color look, in my opinion. This is one of the strengths of the Fujifilm system of cameras, being able to apply distinctive but versatile looks to both footage and photos.

One last word about the music, I wrote this track being inspired by both John Carpenter soundtracks and early Sierra point and click adventure backgrounds on the first outings of Police Quest, Space Quest, and Leisure Suit Larry.

'Sound Bites' - Sequential Prophet 5 Rev4 Desktop polyphonic analogue synth

video upload by DreamsOfWires

"Some sounds from the @SequentialLLC Circuits Prophet 5 Rev4, all sound patches are my own which I made from scratch, and no I don't share/sell presets. More P5 vids in the future.
The Prophet 5 was one of a couple of synths I wanted for more than 20 years, but it was always out of my reach financially. I'm glad Dave Smith decided to re-release it, along with a module version, both for much less than the cost of an original/vintage example nowadays. Nice to have the synth used by so many artists I've enjoyed over the years, John Carpenter, Skinny Puppy, Kraftwerk, Numan, Depeche Mode, Japan and so many other synth pop acts from my youth.
Accompanying footage is from a tour I did of the USA in 2017 whilst playing guitar for a band - I started making videos here covering the stretches chronologically, but never finished them, so here's some more of the last leg of the journey... and perhaps more to come.

Plector (DiN76) by Parallel Worlds

https://dinrecords.bandcamp.com/album/plector-din76

"Greek synthesist Bakis Sirros who records under the name of Parallel Worlds has become a familiar name to followers of the DiN label. His debut release was 'Obsessive Surrealism' (DiN26) back in 2007 and since then he has released a further solo album, 'Shade' (DiN32), as well as several collaborative albums with different artists including DiN label boss Ian Boddy & Node guru Dave Bessell.

'Plector' (DiN76) is his third solo outing on the DiN imprint and continues the deep dive into organic, analogue modular excursions that this talented musician is so adept at. Throbbing, deep bass lines are accompanied by sparse drum patterns and beguiling melodic synth lines. The album has a beautifully cohesive, dark and brooding atmosphere. Hints of a John Carpenter like synth soundtrack lurk around every corner but the sound world that Sirros creates is very much his own. At times the raw beauty of his synth patches grab you whilst at other moments the delicate, glitch like sound design details hover just out of sight. The album is built upon two groups of three rhythmic tracks interspersed with the dark drone of 'Atmoform' and the beautiful, almost Enoesque final track, 'Harmonic Pathways'.

Lovers of Electronica, Dark Techno, Downtempo & IDM will find much to admire in 'Plector' and this new album once again showcases the unique talent of this highly individual musician.

One of my favorite tracks from Icehouse called Icehouse from the year 1980

I used the ARP Quadra Analog Synthesizer for the analog strings (original ARP Solina string ensemble) and for the lead parts.

And I used the Moog Minimoog analog synth for the bass sounds in combination with the ARP Quadra string bass section.

The ARP Quadra Synthesizer from the year 1978 is one of most incredible synths ever. Used by Tony Banks, John Carpenter, New Order, Joe Zawinul and others. Here can you find the full Quadra playlist with single sound demos and one synth demo tracks. Enjoy.

VProm V 2.0 - Linn LM-1 Based Soft Synth by AJLAB aka Aly James Lab

VProm plug-in vs Hardware LM-1 video upload by Aly James

"Direct comparison* between Linn LM-1 direct output and VProm plug-in.
LM-1 recorded straight, VProm direct, no FX, no EQ, no dynamics."

VProm Linn LM-1 VST drum machine overview & tutorial

video upload by Tech Raven

"VProm, by Aly James Lab, VST plugin of the famous Linn LM-1 drum machine. In my opinion, Vprom is the last word on Linn LM-1 plugins, nothing compares, not even close."

via AJLAB

A legend never dies!
The VProm was originally based on THE killer drum machine in town back in the early 80s, this expensive drum computer was also the first to include real drum samples back in the days!

Early sample based drum machines used samples of acoustic drum sounds recorded on the fly through some basic hardware. The way they were recorded without any kind of anti-aliasing makes them cut better in a mix than anything available at the time, they sounded so great that they became an alternative to the analog drum sounds of that era. To this day, the unique sound of this vintage machine is highly regarded because only using samples of the analog output is not enough to reproduce the wide range of sound and character of this beast. One DAC(converter)and clock per voice and yummy filters! Yes it is a historical piece of gear that take a huge place in the 80s sound picture. Only around 500 of these things are out there so don't count on finding a working one easily and forget for cheap. It has been used by major acts like Prince, Phil Collins, Thompson Twins, Stevie Wonder, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, The Human League, Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis, John Carpenter, Todd Rundgren,The Art of Noise... The Machine was made by a musician for musicians and I tried to stick to that standard :) So as there were no accurate VST for that legend out there... I had to make the VProm!

THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT! IT MAKES THINGS HAPPEN, SUCH AS VProm ON WIN, MAC, x86 AND x64 Platforms!

VPROM accurately reproduces the internal circuitry and filtering of the first legendary Drum Machine but is also perfectly able to read and import original, custom or vintage EPROMs from other Drum Machines of that era, legendary 80s machines such as the Linndrum, DMX, DrumTraks etc.(.bin files that you can find on the net) An EPROM is an integrated circuit that was used to store short audio sample data in a compressed format. VPROM is the closest thing to the real deal - reading and decoding original EPROM data images in real time using the exact decode table from the AM6070 DAC at a variable sample rate. VPROM also allow experimenting with your own sample database. You can convert samples with external tools and load compatible ULaw companded images (see manual for more info).

I hope you enjoy making funky grooves with VPROM as much as I do!

Disclaimer: The original name of this VST, "VLinn", has been changed at the request of the Linn Electronics copyright holder, Roger Linn. It is now named "VPROM". Aly James Lab has no affiliation with Roger Linn and has not received any consent from Roger Linn. We do not claim to reproduce the sounds of Roger Linn s product but rather this product creates sounds inspired by Roger Linn s past products.
